Detailed description is Rutgers University Study Abroad program will take students to ITALY -Summer 2014 - Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Tuscany.
Lombardy, Piedmont, Liguria and Tuscany .
You will visit several cities and hilltowns to study the layout and growth pattern of those places as well as focus on some of the more important private gardens and public open spaces within.
Emphasis will be placed on the historic and contemporary context of open space with relation to art and architecture, political, economic and military power, natural landform, climate, materials, tourism and cultural influences.
We will also discuss ‘green design’, sustainability and maintainability in Italy in comparison with the United States.
Course work will include research, observation, analysis, and documentation of various gardens, public spaces and landscapes documented in journals and presentations.
Review and discussion periods will be held to evaluate your work, to share insights, and to discuss the attributes of each site.
All lectures and coursework will be in English.

Carla Tiberi is a licensed landscape architect having earned a Bachelors’ degree in Environmental Design and a Masters in Landscape Architecture.
She has nearly ten years of experience in private design firms in the New York metro area in addition to ten years as the University Landscape Architect at Rutgers.
She has served as adjunct professor for Rutgers Department of Landscape Architecture in New Brunswick as well as for their summer study abroad program in Italy.
Carla lived in Rome for a year where she taught Art History for an American university study abroad program and has been living in Piedmont for several years where she oversees design and construction work for historic farmhouse renovations in a rural hill town.
She has travelled extensively throughout Italy, is fluent in Italian and well-versed on the many ‘secret treasures’ of Italy that she will enthusiastically share with the students as they venture on their daily walking tours..
