The borough of South Greensburg has always been known as a sporting town.
From the time it came into existence in 1891, it has been producing athletic teams that have earned the respect of the entire district.
The borough has had the type of community spirit necessary to put out real teams..

Adult Independent Community Team:.

South Greensburg borough organized its first independent community football team in 1908.
Samuel P.
Hammer, Sr., then principal of the local grade school, had considerable football experience as a varsity player at the University of West Virginia and he taught the locals the elementary tricks of the game.
Players on the team consisted of adult men of the community.
Most of the players were big, husky fellows.
The men seldom trained, perhaps the day before a game, but they knew enough about running, blocking, kicking and slugging (definitely a part of early independent community football) to come through most of their games on top.
South Greensburg played other independent community teams, such as Altoona, Latrobe, Penn, Manor, Irwin and Alverton.
However, early on, South Greensburg had little success against the famed “semi-pro eleven” from the McKeesport Olympics and the Greensburg All-Stars..

Rules in the early days were different than those in use today.
One notable rule, that has since been discarded, concerned calling a man down.
That particular task belonged not to the referee, but to the player.
The play was not officially completed until the ball carrier himself yelled “Down!” So if his face was buried in a water hole or a mud puddle, there was little chance of him preventing the whole opposing team from piling on..

Between 1915 and 1923, the borough’s independent community adult team had a lot of consistency, with many players, coaches and its manager returning year after year.
In three seasons, during this time period, the team won all of its games except two.
One loss was to United and the other loss was to Derry.
One of the outstanding triumphs was a 20-0 Christmas day victory over the Greensburg All-Stars on what is now Offut Field.
The football team played other independent community teams such as Jeannette, United and Mount Pleasant.

Later on, independent community football consisted of two types of teams.
There was the lightweight team, consisting of younger lighter players.
The second type of team was known as the “varsity” team or big team.
For several years, South Greensburg had a fast lightweight team, known as the Tigers, from which the better players “graduated” to the varsity team..

With the increased emphasis upon college and semi-professional football, the South Greensburg big team disbanded after 1923 and the lightweight Tiger team disbanded shortly thereafter.
In the early 1930’s South Greensburg reentered independent football in the 150 pound class.
However, there was no football team during World War II.
After the war ended, the South Greensburg Tigers competed for several seasons in the late 1940’s and was undefeated.

Junior High School Team:.

In 1926 the junior high school (formerly known as Sheridan Avenue elementary school, now known as Noah’s Ark Child Center) was erected.
South Greensburg’s sporting spirit continued in the junior high school as the school choose as its permanent motto: “The School with the Spirit.” It was in that same year that South Greensburg organized a Junior high team, the first of its kind in the district.
The team played other teams, such as Latrobe High School junior varsity, Manor three-year high school, Connellsville, Cochran Junior High School of Johnstown and Rostraver.
The South Greensburg Junior High School team was undefeated in 1927 and 1930.
In 1931, the junior high team was christened “The Bulldogs.” After the 1933 season, junior high school football ended because the Department of Health declared that football should not be played by junior high boys, it was difficult to raise enough money to pay for equipment and problems with transportation.
In the eight seasons, the junior high team had a record of 53 wins, three losses and seven ties.
The South Greensburg Bulldogs scored 1,015 points while allowing their opponents to score only 67 points.
South Greensburg junior high football resumed in 1946 after a 12-year absence.
However, the team disbanded five years later.

Midget football started in 1952 with four teams under the sponsorship of the Greensburg Recreation Board.
Frank Lehman, Jr., Bob Lehman and Ralph King coached the South Greensburg entry from 1952 to 1957.
Vic Koenig and Gary Lyons took over between 1958 and 1960 and won two championships.
Tom Carnes acted as coach between 1961 and 1964.
