Detailed description is This Endowment was created in memory of Susie Schwartz Howard, in partnership with the Univ.
of Michigan, to raise funds to find a cure for breast cancer.
Susie was an amazing woman who had a huge personality, loved to laugh, and was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend.
She truly enjoyed life to the fullest and made a lasting, positive impact on nearly everyone she came in contact with.
It was, therefore, such a devastating tragedy that her life was cut short at such an early age..
Susie's battle with breast cancer goes back to December, 2011.
Susie and her husband Lance were at a friend's party and while dancing together on a crowded dance floor, someone accidentally bumped into Susie.
She immediately felt a sharp pain in her breast.
Shortly thereafter, Susie went to her doctor to be examined and her life and the lives of her family and friends were turned upside down.

Susie was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, 2012..
The news was frightening and saddening at the same time.
Susie was only 46 at the time of her diagnosis and she had hoped to grow old together with Lance, with whom she had just celebrated her 17th Wedding Anniversary on November 12th, 2011..
Most concerning to Susie, however, was how this was going to effect her three teenage children, Sydney, her daughter (age 13) Sam, her oldest son (age 12) and Sawyer, her baby boy (age 11).
Susie worried if she would be there for her children's milestones, future birthdays, learning how to drive, getting into college, getting married, and her children having children of their own.
She also worried who would love them the way only a mother could, if she was no longer here for them..
Susie was extraordinarily resilient and courageous in spite of her fears.
She endured a double mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, intense radiation, nine rounds of chemotherapy and an Oophorectomy (having her ovaries removed)..
She dealt with hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, rashes, memory loss and pain.
Through it all, Susie maintained a smile and a positive attitude, wanting things at home to be as normal as possible for her husband and three children..
Susie and her family were hopeful that she was going to be one of the lucky ones.
Susie's test results initially showed she was in remission and they celebrated.
Their celebration, unfortunately, was short lived..
Cancer is an insidious disease and despite her doctors best efforts, the cancer metastasized and spread to her liver.
Susie and her family were devastated and were now faced not with the question of "if" she was going to die from breast cancer, but "when"..
Never to be discouraged, Susie set out to make the most of whatever time she had left with her family.

In April, 2014, they travelled to Israel together and prayed at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, hiked Mossada, floated in the Dead Sea and surfed the Mediterranean in Tel Aviv.

In November, 2014 Susie and Lance celebrated their 20th Wedding Anniversary by returning to the very same spot in Central Park where Lance first proposed to Susie.
Lance asked Susie to marry him once again and she said "Yes"..
In May, 2015, they went to the Kentucky Derby and cheered on Triple Crown Winner American Pharaoh to victory.

On November 17th, 2015, Susie's extended family (including Parents, Sisters, Uncles, Cousins, Brothers in Law and Sisters in Law) had the opportunity to all get together and celebrate Susie's 50th birthday with a home cooked meal at the home of Susie's mother and father, Arlene and Sonny.
They laughed, they cried, but most of all they showered Susie with love..
Susie's battle with cancer ultimately lasted a total of four years.
On December 29th, 2015, only about a month after Susie's 50th birthday, she passed away at home, surrounded by her family..
There is the obvious tragedy to this story.
Susie's life was cut short at too early an age.
She had so much more life to live and so much more love to give.
