The Delhi Society for the Welfare of Special Children was set up in 1965.
This organization has been committed to the welfare of persons with intellectual disabilities and other associated conditions from the weaker and economically disadvantaged sections of society.
It has 180 students with cases ranging from cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, speech & language delays, multiple disabilities, hearing impairment, Down syndrome & other developmental delays.
The fees charged are nominal and 25% of the total students are not charged tuition fee.

OKHLA CENTRE SCHOOL .
.
Established in the year 1965, this is one of the oldest day care schools in Delhi for children with special needs.
It provides educational and therapeutic services to the children with intellectual disability and associated conditions.
Major renovations are taking place, in order to make it into a stimulating learning environment.
The approach to teaching is child centered, practical, and enjoyable.
The school has a dedicated team of special educators, whose skill up-gradation is taken up from time to time, by the Society..

Currently the school caters to over 100 children with special needs who receive quality rehabilitation, education and training.
The children are grouped into classes according to their chronological age and level of functioning.

The school has also introduced Open Basic Education programs of National Institute of Open School (NIOS) in order to provide flexible learning to the students.

Sports, Music, Singing, Dancing, Yoga, Drama, Art, Clay-modeling classes are taken up in the extra-curricular activities being held in school.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE.

Was started in the year 1979.
Students graduate to the Centre and are trained in various vocational skills according to their interests and abilities.
They are taught simple repetitive skills of printing, candle making, handloom weaving, making of file covers/ envelopes, masala making & packaging, making jute bags, stitching/ tailoring/embroidery.
There are 70 students in the Vocational Training Centre presently.
The Centre, gives a stipend to its students, providing them, with a sense of satisfaction & self-worth.
They also operate the Canteen, and prepare meals, for school consumption..

TEACHERS’ TRAINING INSTITUTE (TTI) .

Established in 1999 the TTI offers B.Ed in Special Education from Indira Gandhi National Open University (Correspondence Course) over two years, Post Graduate Professional Diploma in Special Education over nine months, a three months Foundation Course and several other short-term courses like CRE (continuing rehabilitation education) for special educators, psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.
The Rehabilitation Council of India recognizes all the courses conducted at TTI.
Every year, the Institute brings out over 100 successful Special Educators who are placed in school of repute in Delhi and other parts of the country where they come from.

The Institute has introduced B.Ed in Special Education (Regular Mode) course in the field of Mental Retardation with affiliation from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi from the coming academic year 2012-13 with approval from the Rehabilitation Council of India and the Govt.

Established in the year 1976 to evaluate development of children with special needs in the area of academics, learning, skills, psychosocial adjustment, interpersonal relationships, vocational aptitudes and health.
More than 100 children are evaluated each year by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists consisting of a pediatrician, clinical psychologist, speech therapist, special educator, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and social worker.
A comprehensive rehabilitation program is designed for each child.

Established in January 2010 for the benefit of special children between 4 years to 14 years.
This unit is one of its’ kind as it accepts severe cases not admitted by other such institutions.
It accepts children in need of intensive therapeutic and behavioral intervention giving them a chance towards rehabilitation.
The unit also provides a platform to the children in transition, from respite care to the mainstream.
Presently, there are 12 children, two special educators and a caretaker.
An Occupational Therapist & a Speech Therapist from the Diagnostic & Counseling Clinic also tend to the Unit.

Early intervention is a program started in Feb 2012 to help infants and toddlers who have developmental delays or are at risk for such delays.

The goal of the program is to help children as soon as possible, so that they can reach their full potential.
Prime objective of the program is to promote inclusive opportunities for them in the society.

Parental training and counseling is an integral part of the program.
The program caters to children from birth to 4years of age.
