Detailed description is The Galaxy Project, Inc.
is an IRS certified 501c3 nonprofit organization for a youth center in Olive Hill, KY.
In the fall of 2011, three local high school students and one adult met at the West Carter High School library to brainstorm ideas for a youth center for their small community struggling to survive following two devastating floods occurring within a three month period one year prior.
This small town was already struggling financially with many businesses lost and a depressed economy.
On that day, a new dream was created, the plan and layout designed, and a committed persistence agreed upon to see it through.
.
Consistent once-per-month meetings ensued over the next three years as we followed the Vermont Coalition of Teen Centers Handbook as a guide to establish a center.
Over the course of those meetings, that small group learned what a strong teen center requires and expanded the number of volunteers to include other diversely skilled adults, committed community leaders, and teen visionaries.
All joined the plan to create a true “…community effort to meet the needs of their teens and offer youth some common elements: 1) A safe, supervised and enjoyable place to be with their peers; 2) Opportunities to participate in fun, meaningful substance free activities; 3) An active role and voice in shaping services to meet their needs; 4) Opportunities to explore leadership roles; 4) Caring adults who want to help teens develop by providing encouragement, resources, and inspiration; 5) Important information about teen health and safety issues; and 6) Referrals to other available services.” (VCTC).
Throughout 2012, much research and exploration of existing youth centers became the first crucial step.
An agreement was reached to follow that clear provision of the Vermont Plan in establishing our own local youth center.
The youth in the group led the crucial task of conducting various community surveys.
Those results are reflected in the first paragraph of this narrative.
The opinions from nearly 1000 local school youth, over 100 local adults through online through social media polls, and personal, one-on-one questioning of all ages, determined the overwhelming want (and need) for a center in the Olive Hill community.
.
By June 2013, an official advisory council was established for the newly named “Galaxy Project.” Adults with experience in finance, business, technology, law, health, fitness, and visual/performing arts were hand selected and agreed to participate.
These adults included a superintendent of a state resort park, a local attorney, retired teachers in various fields of study, a health executive, and owner of a fitness center, to name a few.
Additional high school teens were added with various gifts/talents in the similar areas as well.
All committed to the project.
.
Five center component areas (discussed in the activities narrative to follow) comprised the final plan with the potential hope of developing those either wholly, or in delayed stages, dependent upon available crucial funding opportunities.
.
Discussions over the next year of monthly meetings focused on the business and legal aspects of the center, as well as developing a rubric to evaluate and investigate any local facilities potentially able to house it.
By-laws, articles of incorporation, the creation of a board of directors, appointing an executive director, and means for electronic distance attendance to meetings through various media were developed.
By September, 2014, all these goals were accomplished with the initial three-member board of directors holding their first meeting on October 11, 2014.
The “Galaxy Project” officially became “The Galaxy Project, Inc.” as all legal documents (articles of incorporation and bylaws) were filed with the State of Kentucky, a federal EIN secured, and a bank account opened to receive funding, officers elected, and reaffirmation of completion secured.
At that same meeting, a move was made to secure confidentiality and conflict of interest forms and policies.
.
The final step before grant applications would be submitted is the completion and the assignment of the 501(c)3 nonprofit status.
At the October, 2014 meeting, that work was discussed and assigned for drafting.
Those results you now hold in your hand.
A volunteer grant writer awaits its approval to assist this group in securing necessary funding to make the center a reality.
