Because many have said our country was built on the backs of slaves, and due to the adoption of the “One Drop” law in 1926, which states that anyone with ANY African ancestry is considered to be black, more people are African American than we know, or are willing to acknowledge.
African American history IS American history! Therefore, every descendant and/or beneficiary of the contributions of the African slave should become knowledgeable of the history, culture, and issues of Africans who were involuntarily enslaved, fought to become free African Americans, and continue to struggle for freedom and equality in America, even today.
Unfortunately, although African Americans have played a prominent role in developing our country and even influencing its culture, most only have minimal knowledge of black history; Dr.
Martin Luther King and his “I Have a Dream” speech, Malcolm X, perhaps Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, along with a few inventions by blacks.
