About the Asylum:.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, closed its doors in 1994 after 130 years service as an asylum for the insane.
More European castle than American hospital, this imposing Gothic structure exemplifies Victorian architecture at its finest.
From the outside it could serve as background for a Royal Procession, while indoors one can wander its 2 1/2 miles of hallways and find a mental ward right out of the 1960’s..
This Nationally Recognized Historic landmark is the largest hand cut stone building in the Western Hemisphere.
Now privately owned, the asylum operates as a tourist destination offering historic and paranormal tours.
The central section, directly under the 200 ft high clock tower, contains a museum and several faithfully restored period rooms from the 1870’s to the 1960’s.
One of the patient wards has been restored but the remaining 23 are largely untouched.
The endless decayed hallways and vacant patient rooms, including isolation cells with rusted rings once used to chain the most violent, create an extremely eerie atmosphere.

The 20 acre front lawn is enclosed by a Victorian wrought iron fence, installed in 1892.
There are several other buildings adjacent to the main Asylum, including the Women’s Auxiliary (1890), the TB Building (1930), the Forensics building (1950), and the Medical Center (1960) which includes a morgue.
Behind the facility there are over 270 acres of rolling hills with several weathered structures from what used to be a farm and three graveyards where thousands of unclaimed bodies were buried in mostly unmarked graves.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE:.
All tours are first come first serve and we recommend arriving 20 minutes before the hour that you wish to take the tour to complete the waiver and purchase tickets.
Most tours LEAVE on the hour, the exception are full tours that may leave early.
When you arrive, just inside the the entrance six computer stations are available on the left for your convenience where you will complete a waiver form.
Please approach the information desk to complete your check-in.
