Detailed description is Tier 1 UTC, part of the UTC Program, OST-R, US DOT focused on railway safety research, education, workforce development, and technology transfer.
The purpose of this newly established University Transportation Center is to increase awareness of the field of transportation engineering, with a focus on railway safety.
Toward that end, the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) at The University of Texas-Pan American will develop a multi-tiered approach targeting several different demographic groups from elementary school students to industry professionals.
A 1-week summer camp for elementary and middle school students designed to teach introductory concepts in transportation engineering through hands-on, interactive activities will be developed and offered.
Professional development workshops for teachers will be created enabling them to develop lesson plans to teach students how to use science and math concepts to solve real-world problems in railroad and transportation engineering and safety.
A 1-day summer professional development workshop will be offered for teachers in conjunction with the Research Experiences for Teachers in Emerging and Novel Engineering Technologies (RET-ENET) program at UTPA.
To increase awareness and interest in railway engineering and safety as a career among the next generation of engineering professionals, the UTCRS will partner with the Texas Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) to create a unit on Transportation Engineering and Railway Safety to be delivered during the Introduction to Engineering course that is part of the TexPREP program.
Finally, professional development materials for industry professionals will be provided to enable them to gain additional knowledge of transportation railway safety..

One of the major goals of the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) is to increase awareness of transportation engineering and more specifically railway engineering and safety as a career option.
While many students are aware of mechanical, electrical, civil, and chemical engineering, many have never thought of railway or even transportation engineering as a discipline.
They are unaware of the opportunities and challenges in the design and implementation of transportation infrastructure, equipment and facilities.

Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be a 20% growth for all engineers between 2008 and 2018 and that transportation engineers have the potential to command lucrative salaries.
Thus, one of the goals of this proposal is to develop educational materials and outreach activities to promote transportation engineering as a career option for all age groups from elementary school students to engineering professionals..

Currently, the number of students majoring in transportation engineering is declining.
The number of students graduating with a specialization in transportation engineering from domestic universities will not accommodate the 20% growth in the industry estimated by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
One of the goals of UTCRS is to reverse this trend through multifaceted educational and outreach activities targeted toward high school students, elementary students, K-12 teachers and professionals in the industry.
The goal of these outreach activities is to teach elementary students about transportation engineering in an engaging, interactive, and hands-on ways and encourage secondary students to view the field of transportation engineering as a viable career option..

To increase awareness of transportation engineering as a career possibility among high school students, the UTCRS will partner with the Texas Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (TexPREP) at UTPA.
TexPREP is an academically intense, 8-week summer program designed to provide educational enrichment opportunities for high ability 8th through 11th grade students interested in pursuing degrees in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering.
The primary Goal of TexPREP is to improve access to careers in Mathematics, Sciences, and Engineering.
Students in TexPREP take courses including Introduction to Engineering, Problem Solving, and Logic.
In collaboration with TexPREP, the UTCRS will develop one unit on transportation engineering and railway safety to be delivered during the TexPrep Introduction to Engineering course.
Students will learn about career options in the transportation industry, and various aspects of the rail industry, including railway safety and how rail systems and activities work with other modes of transportation to provide a complete transportation system..

The UTCRS will also partner with the Research Experiences for Teachers in Emerging and Novel Engineering Technologies (RET-ENET) program at UTPA.
Professional development activities will be delivered at the annual RET-ENET workshop to 100 middle school and high school teachers.
Prior to the professional development activities, a survey will be administered to assess how much teachers know about railway engineering and railway safety.
Teachers will be introduced to careers in transportation engineering and participate in professional development activities that result in lesson plan and learning activity deliverables involving the application of specific concepts in math and science to real-world problems in transportation engineering, railroad engineering, and railroad safety.
A second survey will be administered after the professional development activity to evaluate the training impact.
The UTCRS will develop an analogous 1-day workshop to provide professional development opportunities for elementary teachers.
The teachers will develop and learn instructional activities that they can use in their own classrooms to teach math and science concepts to solve basic problems in railway engineering and familiarize students with various occupations in transportation engineering that are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills..

The UTCRS will develop instructional materials that can be used for career day at elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools to increase awareness of careers in transportation engineering, railroad engineering and railroad safety.
For professionals already working in the industry, the UTCRS will develop a series of four interactive web-based modules designed to provide professional development in transportation railway safety.
The modules will be under one hour in length and will focus on key issues in transportation railway safety.
The modules will address railroad grade crossings, bridges/infrastructure, railroad bearings and general railway safety.
In addition to the web-based modules, professionals will also have the opportunity to take longer, more in depth online course modules.
Upon completion of coursework, professionals will be provided with a certificate of completion and continuing education credits.
