The martial arts of the Jung Moo Kwan ("Righteous Martial Arts Institute") descend from "Koreanized" Shuri-Te and Shotokan Karate through the Chung Do Kwan and the Oh Do Kwan, and Hap Ki Do through the Shin Moo Kwan.
The original Karate of the Jung Moo Kwan was first referenced as "Kong Soo Do," then later called "Tae Kwon Do," although early Tae Kwon Do was closer to Japanese Karate than the modern version of WTF Taekwondo.
Dr.
Charles Owens, the Kwan Jang of the Jung Moo Kwan, adopted the term "Kong Soo Sul" (Korean Karate-Jutsu) to designate the hard-fist martial art of the Jung Moo Kwan, dropping all references to "Taekwondo," since the latter became purely a sport.
In Jung Moo Kwan Kong Soo Sul emphasis is placed on training in the hyung (kata) and their punhae (bunkai), called "kata combatives" in the Jung Moo Kwan..
