Detailed description is Viking Mountain Vineyards is a small vineyard specializing in French-American Hybrid and Vinifera grapes.
We sell grapes to both wineries and home winemakers.
We purchased our farm from the Pless family in 2009.
The farm had been in their family for many years and they have been generous with sharing old pictures and the history of the farm with us.
Rance Pless, the owner of the farm when we purchased it, was once a major league baseball player, and he even gave us one of his old baseball cards!.

We started our vineyard the spring of 2009 with an initial planting of 300 vines of 10 different varieties of both French-American hybrid and vinifera grapes.
Vinifera grapes produce the varieties of wine people are most familiar with such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
French-American hybrids are less well known wine grapes, but the vines are better adapted to the heat and humidity of the southeastern United States.
We experienced the wines of several varieties of French-American hybrids as we toured wineries in North Carolina and Virginia during 2008.
Our goal with the initial planting was to learn about growing grapes and determine which varieties we could plant with the most succcess.

In 2010, we expanded our vineyard with a planting of about 700 Chambourcin vines.
Chambourcin is a French-American hybrid grape and we selected it as our first major variety as it is both well adapted to the unpredictable weather in the South and is used by many wineries in the state.
We have since expanded our Chambourcin planting to approximately 2 acres..

Although we selected a French-American hybrid for our first major expansion, it does not mean our vinifera grapes have not fared well.
We had good production of our Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in 2011, the first year we allowed a harvest on these grapes..

The 2012 growing season has been a bit of a challenge due to unseasonably warm weather in March which lead to early bud break followed by a hard freeze in mid-April that completely wiped out the primary bud break.
However, most varieties have bounced back and are producing extremely well off of the secondary buds.
We anticipate having plenty of product to sell to both wineries and home winemakers.
