Detailed description is The White Earth Land Settlement Act (WELSA) of 1985, Public Law 99-264, as amended, is the result of illegal land sales and the underlying cause for the controversy between White Earth Indians and the land prospectors in the early 1900’s.
White Earth mem-bers, in those times, had received tracts of land that were to be held in trust by the United States Government.
The tracts of land were 80 acres each (in general) and members were allotted well over 100,000 acres.
Today, there are over 2,000 valid WELSA Claims that pertain to these land allotments.
