After the Bolivian government confirmed the death of 35 condors, a vulnerable species and a national symbol, conservationists said Wednesday the finding could be the largest number of fatalities in decades. Dozens of bird carcasses were found near Laderas Norte in the Tarija department, some 600 km (372 miles) south of the capital La Paz, over the weekend.
Authorities have started an investigation into the cause of the mass death, believing the birds were poisoned after consuming tainted meat left by local ranchers to kill predators hunting their livestock. The condor, with a wingspan as long as 120 cm (3.9 feet), is one of the largest birds capable of flying in the world, and conservationist groups consider them as a species "vulnerable to exctinction."
