The May 16 article “Pa. Turnpike Secrecy Takes a Toll,” about the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission left out a few facts pertinent to the discussion. In fact, we have made transparency and stewardship priorities in both thought and action in recent years.
For instance, the article didn’t reference a 2019 performance audit by the Pennsylvania auditor general confirming our commitment to transparency and acknowledging our adherence to procurement policies. Nor did it reference a 2016 audit noting that our use of swaps was “prudent and conservative.”
Wall Street acknowledges our agency is a good steward of customers’ toll dollars; we’ve maintained favorable bond ratings despite complex funding requirements and the pandemic. In the last decade, we’ve refinanced outstanding debt, saving over $1 billion.
