In a statement on Facebook, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne announced it would not be observing Canada Day celebrations due to recent findings of thousands of children’s remains at residential schools across the country.
“The ongoing horrific discoveries of children at former residential schools continue to bring pain, hurt and renewed calls for accountability. Our community supports complete investigations at all former residential school sites and accountability for those institutions involved in this genocide,” said MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict in an email.
