Here an exchange of gunfire happened and that subject is deceased at that location. We have Law Enforcement injured we have the d. P. S. Trooper in Midland County we have one in p. D. Officer and one nobody else or they were struck. As for civilian casualties we have at least 21 victims 21 shooting victims and at least 5 deceased at this point. Please understand that this is not just an o. B. D. In the middle and Police Department in the d. P. S. Thing. Both sheriff of the county Sheriffs Office and her county Sheriffs Office was involved in the and the hunt for this guy. Our local School District Police Department our university of texas of the Permian Basin school. Police department involved this was a joint effort by just multitude of departments to find this animal and bring him to justice. At this point ill take questions. And i dont know right now ill tell you that he is a white male in his mid thirtys. I dont have a positive identification on him yet but i have an idea who years so i wont release that information until were absolutely positive id or an artist years. Individual was taken out of the picture there have been no more victims. Is there a reason to believe that there is a 2nd suspect that is. So we got reports of 2 vehicles earlier today but i guess is that not confer i think what the issue with that was that you had the the original vehicle and then you had the mail truck. At one point we didnt know that that was the same person but that is confirmed now same person anything else and do we know one of these years was it done was it shocked i obviously it was a gun. At this point im really not sure and then how did the into that. Again it may have started with the traffic stop the attempted traffic stop p. S. Or of their own you know i wouldnt i would tell people to still be cautious still try to stay in their residences if it all possible we do believe that we have the threat contained but i cant be 1000. 00 samples if thats the case at this point it might be. S. 8 of texas has just been giving a briefing after a shooting in odessa today at least 5 people confirmed dead according to police multiple suspects after a gunman opened fire on people in Odessa Police saying that the suspect has been killed he said to be a white male in his mid thirtys theyve been reports that there was a 2nd suspect involved in the incidents but no confirmation of that police say lets get more from hades or castor has been following this breaking news story for us from washington d. C. What more have we heard from police about this since that end in odessa. Well foley police said that this narrative that theyve been able to string together in very short time may still change because so little time has passed since this violence and folded but the story that they just told reporters is that this one lone the suspect who as you said is a white man in his mid thirtys was pulled over by a traffic stop by a state trooper a Police Officer in texas for some reason this person opened fire on this Police Officer managed to drive away and then shot at other random people from his moving Vehicle Police say then this is suspect went on to abandon the car he was driving and steal a mail delivery truck and continue shooting at innocent people who are just out and about fellow motorists while getting away from Police Officers this continued until Police Caught up with this man outside of a Movie Theater in the nearby city of odessa and after exchanging gunfire then the suspect was killed its still unclear whether he was shot by police or whether he committed suicide and police say that there are at least 5 people dead as a result of this these are members of the public who were killed along with a total of 21. 00 shooting victims among the public along with 3 officers who were also killed in this gun battle one was that initial state trooper who pulled over the suspect and 2 other Police Officers later in the pursuit and in that encounter that ended with the death of the suspect but police are stressing that it appears that the situation is now contained in the sense that theyre not receiving any more reports of more people being shot at although they say theyre not 100 percent sure that this was a lone suspect but they are. Are operating under that assumption right now so right and we did hear the police chief there talk about a very fluid situation. There were reports it was asked by some of the reporters at that briefing of a 2nd suspect what more do we know about that. It appears that they may that may have been a point of confusion because of the multiple vehicles used by this one single suspect the police chief clarified and said that because this man started out in his own personal vehicle and then was able to abandon that and switch to the mail delivery van and because of the widespread panic that this in a suit and putting the public on alert that there may have been confusing and inaccurate reports that conflicted with one another at this point they say that they believe at least that this one suspect has been killed and there is no more active shooter out on the roads heidi only 4 weeks ago a gunman killed 22 people in a mass shooting in el paso also in texas people must be very nervous made a very jumpy after this latest incident. Its hard to say fully because now these Mass Shootings in the United States have become so commonplace its sad to say in these News Headlines and particularly in a state like texas which is a very conservative and progun rights staves its actually ironic because as of tomorrow september 1st there is a whole slew of recently passed state laws that actually expand a persons rights in the state of texas to carry a gun to bring it on to School Parking lots and schools and colleges in the state as well as into houses of worship and thats just 2 of the 8 progun rights legislation that was recently passed by the state legislature and that will take Effect Tomorrow now on a National Scale there were many calls on the Democratic Front to pass federal Gun Legislation that included expanding background checks which according to polls a majority of americans from both Political Parties support as well as other measures to contain guns however Congress Went to recess without bringing those measures to a vote in the senate and as they come back to d. C.
