When a person catches this new coronavirus the body responds by mounting an immune response and we know that happens because people recover the vast majority of people recover and if we look in the bloodstream we can try and antibodies and its almost certain youll find white blood cells that have been programmed by the immune system to fight off this infection you can repeat those sorts of studies in animals as well there are there are studies in monkeys for example there are also studies in other animals now and most animals get exactly the same sort of infection that humans do they become unwell they clear the virus and they get an immune response and if you keep looking downstream of them having been infected you can continue to detect an immune response so all this is adding up to the fact that the body does make a successful immune response and it all comes down to well how long does that last for and i think what the w. H. O. Are doing is urging caution which is always sensible to do because we dont know the answer to that and we couldnt possibly know the answer because weve only known about the viruses existence for about 6 months so the longest time that were going to know anyone can be immune is 6 months but at the same time one should also bear in mind that we do have a good immune system it seems to work in the long term for a lot of other infections so its not a given that it wont work i think theyre just being cautious and theres a number of reasons about it i might be right so what more that needs to be done to get more clarity on exactly the degree of protection that these antibodies actually provide and for how long.
