A bystanders video of the arrest. Last in america becomes the new global epicenter of the current virus pandemic the World Health Organization has warned of surging infection numbers and brazil peru and chile now brazil is by far the regions west affected country with more than 300000 confirmed cases thats the 2nd highest number in the wilds the situation is so bad that the u. S. Has imposed travel restrictions for anyone coming from that country thats just going to affect tourism but reports. Away from the sandy beaches of rio theres any weve got a national fabiano the kind that are are trying to locate kuwait patients in the of 1115. They have just recovered from 1000 themselves and are now working on their day off to help those in need which. Hospitals are full most cases were not serious so this way we could help going to people where to go with visiting people and also to see their problems in their homes small houses with not a lot of air flow we could give an overall guidance ok and cleaning. As the amount of cases of coal with 1000 continues to rise in brazil these doctors believe that Early Detection is crucial to saving lives. Thats why they have turned this somber school into a temporary office story coming to phone these people have been historically abandoned by society and politicians they have no access to Public Health care a cannot afford medicines that is why we are here. People like that the end of the sources say they have been abandoned by the government damn you it makes you scared very scared there are a lot of people who believe the virus is a lie from the politicians but its not a lie we know what were talking about my neighbor had it and recovered i have other friends infected a friend died its very sad the demographic density in the last increases the chances of catching kovac 19. In the past few days human rights activists have to announce a change in the body removal protocols what once was a Public Service now depends on the relatives of the deceased. Would you very much search your life after 27 hours a body was removed from this house it is absurd what the state is doing with people who do not even have a chance to bury their dead. Its all happening as brazil is caught in a political crisis that has polarized the country between those who believe the way out is by imposing a lockdown and those like president who want to open up the economy the fight has forced governors to clash with water. On tuesday their police raided the residence of rios governor wilson reed cell who is being investigated for corruption in the handling of covert 1000 vets has said on twitter is using the federal police to attack him. Caught in the middle of the dispute are the victims of brazils political system which is failing to protect those who are in need of help the most. Now u. S. President on trump has run into trouble with his favored form of communication twitter has labeled 2 tweets on his official account as misleading for the very 1st time and refers users to a fact check page trump says the social Media Company is stifling free speech and interfering with the president ial election later this year in a free it is the chief Technology Correspondent at the news web site access and says its taken to us that a long time to act on these types of tweets. There are 2 areas where twitter has said specifically they would be more aggressive one of those is misinformation around the virus so weve seen them take action against the brazilian president over that and then also on election misinformation so this is one of the 2 areas where they said theyd be more aggressive that said they have never taken action in 3 and a half years of president ial tweets and there have been plenty that have been misleading this is the 1st time that theyve wave all that so its still a major moment i think theres been a lot of pressure but initially if you remember in 201617188 lot of the focus was on coordinated in authentic behavior so outside of the u. S. Influences on elections so whether it was russia or china or whomever it was other countries using bots attempting to interfere the more recent issue has to do with misinformation but intentional by individuals so its not you know authentic behavior its actually president term its just that the information itself its false and the platforms have been much less able to deal with this its much easier for them to take a look at you know a 1000 bots that are repeating the same thing and saying ok thats definitely not allowed where it gets harder is when you have the actual president whether its brazils president tweeting misinformation d about the coronavirus or President Trump tweeting false information about the election that is much harder now riot pain around hong kong the Legislative Council has a protest at the base and all that could see people jailed for disrespecting chinas National Anthem and comes as beijing prepares to push through a new security you know for the territory well lets ask our correspondent adrian brown hes outside the Council Building adrian the councils already in session today at 2nd pretty quiet this still. Its very quiet i think its fair to say that the police have managed to thwart any attempt by protesters to stage a demonstration outside hong kongs parliament now the police had warned ahead of today that they would arrest anyone taking part in what they said would be an Illegal Assembly and that those people arrested could face up to 5 years in jail now some 3000. 00 police are on duty riot police are on duty today and they have been fanning out in nearby streets carrying out stop and Search Operations theyve also been questioning anybody entering the complex has to produce their id cards and that includes journalists as well now inside the chamber legislators are jus to begin debating that National Anthem bill on wednesday afternoon now this bill would make it an offense for anyone to disrespect chinas National Anthem which of course is played here in hong kong the National Anthem of china is also the National Anthem of hong kong but whats been happening in recent weeks months in years is that when the National Anthem is being played a big sporting events for instance people tend to jeer the National Anthem and that has enraged chinas leaders so if that happens in future once this bill becomes law and it will be because the arithmetic is on the pro establishment side then people carrying committing that offense would face a fine of up to 6 and a half 1000. 00 and also 3 years in jail now. Its expected that the vote on this bill will take place on june the 4th which of course is a very sensitive anniversary in this part of the world because it was on june the 4th 1989 the chinese soldiers opened fire on prodemocracy demonstrators in beijings gentleman square and every year since people have attempted to hold a candle lit vigil here in hong kong but this year your thirtys say that vigil wont be happening adrian brown that for us on the ground in hong kong thanks very much adrian well lets dig into this a little more with ben bland he is a Research Fellow and director for the Southeast Asia project at the Lowy Institute and he joins us now from sydney ben lets start with whats happening and whats not happening today i dont see any protesters outside the lead despite some very vocal calls for demonstrations is this now an example of beijings crackdown working or i think it certainly is to some extent in the last 12 months theres been Something Like 8000 democracy activists and protesters arrested more than a 1000 of those have been put on trial already so a lot of key people have been rounded up but as you just saw in those pictures theres a very heavy Police Presence today in hong kong so you thought hes a really out there trying to stop people protesting in addition we cant forget that were in the middle still of the coded 19 outbreak so people are a bit more nervous and theyre of the government restrictions on mass public activity at this time so its really a number of different factors which mean were not seeing the sort of protests today a year ago we were certainly would then as you say weve weve seen some recent arrests and very high profile ones as well and china is now taping this National Security legislation in beijing im curious about the timing of all of this is beijing using this pandemic and the restrictions with it as an opportunity to get some controversial things done while these protests are near impossible. Well i think when in politics anywhere when theres a debate between conspiracy and cockup its almost always the latter so i think its probably just fortuitous timing the authorities in beijing couldnt have foreseen the outbreak of this demick at least not last year they couldnt but i think it was inevitable that after the protests the defiance of last year in hong kong were always going to see the Chinese Communist party crack down and its taken them some time to work out what to do and its certainly helpful in a sense now that its much harder for hong kong people to protest because of covert 19 and i think the attention of governments around the world and people in general are going to be away from hong kong on the mystic issues also because of the pandemic so it is certainly helpful timing for the authorities sure well today is theres understandably controversial as our correspondent adrian there was saying but even more controversial is these National Security laws and theyre due to be passed on thursday i believe took us through what that means for the proDemocracy Movement and han potentially the Civil Society groups there. Well the the proposed National Security that station is really a huge blow to hong kongs way of life its a blow to the Democracy Movement and i think even to the Business Community around the world which has used hong kong as a key base really for for investment and trade with china and there are 2 key things one is the the legislation itself which is likely to bring in a whole host of new wide ranging offenses which are going to be targeted on democracy activists those who oppose beijings rule want to defend their rights the other important thing is the manner in which is this is being brought in so one of the National Anthem law is actually being brought in by the Hong Kong Legislature and National Security legislation is being imposed directly by beijing so its a huge blow to the autonomy that hong kong is meant to enjoy and its a sign of times to come that beijings going to be playing a much more direct role in managing the city which really takes away all the advantages of hong kong as a place which is that it has been autonomous and free thats exactly why its been a success and a great place to live in and work and do business in the past then plans their Research Fellow and director of the Southeast Asia project at the Lowy Institute great to get your insights on aljazeera thanks paul. Ahead. Iran swearing in its new Parliament Well be live from tehran what challenges lie ahead. Many airports. Travel could help a struggling industry get back on its feet. However theres no shortage of heat across the middle east now is same a few showers just around the eastern side of the mediterranean cleared for a tempest recovering in damascus to around 35. 00 celsius started to pick up a good interest in 27 degrees here hot sunshine pushing across iraq into iran through kuwait into the fortys and into the mid fortys for some 30. In doha as we go on into thursday edging up a little higher still could touch 47 in kuwait 46 the impact that sort of temperature has but to say around the middle part of summer actually meanwhile across the central parts of africa the usual seasonal rains again just fading into wards the gulf of guinea right across the topics heavy downpours there through cameron southern parts of nigeria more of the same as we go on through thursday by thursday you could see more showers just pushing their way back into the coastal fringes of ethiopia into somalia tanzania still in with a chance of seeing some of those rains as well recently just clipping the fos out of south africa just across the southern the system a story still on the cool side for janice but at around 13 degrees a wednesday afternoon but warming up nicely by thursday. Isolating times the listening post. Cuts through the noise lead to looking at another side of this story not so much information around the outbreak but the misinformation separating propaganda from fact its reality has truly. Exposing the old. And if the rhetoric and shift blame but they cannot manipulate the virus the listening post your insight going to the media which is the era. And again. Lets remind you of our top stories this hour on Health Research as a warning the number of coronavirus deaths in brazil could increase 5 fold by august the study from the university of washington comes as a u. S. Ban on foreign travelers coming from brazil goes into effect. Twitter has flagged 2 tweets by u. S. President donald trump about 14 and mail in ballots as misleading the social media platform has munched the tweet with a link to another page where Fact Checkers have debunked the claim. And hong kong is bracing for more protests this time of a controversial bill that would make it a criminal offense to insult chinas National Anthem riot police have been deployed outside the Legislative Council where the bill will be debated and. Now iran is swearing in its new parliament 277. 00 newly elected members will hold the 1st session of the 11th parliament and president Hassan Rouhani is also expected to deliver a speech but our correspondent zain verjee joins us now live from tehran zain talk us through the makeup of this new parliament and how thats going to play out with the current leadership. Well president Hassan Rouhani has one year left in office before the next president ial election in fact he is speaking now to welcome in and congratulate the 11th parliament in the history of the Islamic Republic of iran this is a 290 member body it is the legislative body of the iranian government now we saw this morning the naga ration ceremonies beginning there were several people there present the m. P. s have all been tested for covert 19 to make sure that no one there in attendance is sick or can get anyone else sick we saw people spaced out sitting in a social distancing fashion during the speeches being made for this inauguration now we what we do know about this parliament is that at least 2 members of parliament have died from the coronavirus after being elected to m. P. Alecks have died one was disqualified for forging a University Degree ahead of the election saying you know that reza the is the temporary speaker of Parliament According to iranian tradition the eldest member of parliament is the temporary speaker in the beginning before they vote in a new one former speaker of Parliament Ali larijani has completed his last term hell be on his way out and we will be seeing a new speaker of Parliament Take over the elections that brought this parliament into being was touted as something very important by the Supreme Leader ayatollah come in a bit back in february we saw the lowest voter turnout in the history of the Islamic Republic of iran really reflecting how frustrated the population is with Economic Issues with social issues with iran under sanctions with with Foreign Policy concerns the voter turnout was around 40 percent the lowest that this country has ever seen it was also an opportunity for the Guardian Council that oversees elections to sort of clear house reformist did not do well 80 of them were disqualified on corruption charges and really conservatives have. Taken over over this body now president Hassan Rouhani who is speaking now ahead of this inauguration ceremony did say that he hopes for a positive relationship with this parliament really we have to look at the previous much less the previous parliamentary body they tried 10 times to impeach ministers in president Hassan Rouhani is cabinet successfully impeaching 3 if president Hassan Rouhani has 2 more impeachments that are successful then his presidency will have to go back for a vote of confidence from this very conservative parliament to continue but experts here tell us that they expect that this last final year of the president will go forward smoothly the Supreme Leaders message was read out by an m. P. At this event at this inauguration and he made it clear that it is the job of the parliament to investi
