A silent. Protest. Just take this in for one second. The streets of new york turning quiet for this moment. And they many people told us that they feel as if i holding their hands up like this its really have act of defiance is what weve been hearing from them over and over as they start chanting we want justice. Or go live for us there with protesters in new york city thank you very much lets go to mike hanna who joins us live from washington d. C. Where things also are pretty frantic there too mike protesters of again taken to the streets close to the white house are we likely to see clashes with Security Forces there in the hours ahead. Well the demonstrations been fairly peaceful up until this point there were a number of windows broken at one stage but generally the protesters have been peaceful the police and the secret service behind them have not needed to press up against them as they had to do want to cations during the demonstrations friday but one notable fact is that in the course of the morning President Trump issued a tweet saying that tonight is mad good night at the white house now that stands for make America Great again thats the brand of the Trump Campaign now this was interpreted as president calling on his conservative supporters to stage a counter demonstration outside the white house but at this stage no sign whatsoever of the red caps magers supporters so certainly the message that president passed out either ignored or not seen perhaps by his followers but it was enough to highly anger the mayor of d. C. She saw the message as the president encouraging conflict at a time when the city authorities were of tempting to keep peace on the ground she was also highly angered by president trance claim in a speech that the d. C. Police stood back and lifted up to the secret service to police the demonstrations on friday the mayor very angrily pointing out that in fact secret service and d. C. Police had a joint command center d. C. Police were operating very closely and in fact they even lent some of the secret service some riot equipment so the mayor and the president trying very much at odds at this particular. She was further angered by another of President Trumps tweets in which she said the demonstrators wouldnt be met with powerful weapons and vicious dogs she hearkened this back to 1960 s. Era when some dogs on to black american protesters so certainly the temperature rising between the president and the mayor of the district in which the president presides all right mike hanna there in washington d. C. Mike thank you were going to pause briefly and bring you some other news of the day and the new era of human space travel has begun after the 1st privately owned rocket sent to nasa astronauts into orbit. Well bob behnken and doug hurley are now on their way to the International Space station aboard the dragon craft which launched atop a rocket owned by space 6 crowds of spectators including the u. S. President watched the historic launch in florida the pair are due to arrive at the space station on sunday for a 4 month stay lets bring in jeremy hunt in houston hes an astronaut representing the Canadian Space agency nasa german so this is the 1st time in 9 years that american astronauts have been launched from u. S. Soil into space presumably a hugely significant moment for the u. S. Space program. Yeah i would say so absolutely they had this vision of creating what they call the commercial crew program to encourage an industry to support launching from humans from the surface of the planet into lower lower orbit and now now its coming to fruition and really what its about is the promise of decreasing the cost of going to space and you know as a Canadian National not we see this as an opportunity for all of our for many countries around the world because its about what the International Partnership can all bring to the table to Amazing Things together and this is going to be an amazing if ability and jeremy the moons was delayed for a few days because of bad weather but just talk us through the risks involved with this mission that will be happening over the next 20 hours or so as they try and chase the space station to dock with it yeah i tell you im afraid the science really when i saw the the rocket it safely out the pad and certainly once it was in space you know a lot a lot of us feel like thats the riskiest part of the spaceflight but indeed we are still very much in the vacuum of space spacecraft past the work weve never had humans on board before this is very much a test flight and so theyre checking system no one system at a time and getting ready to approach the space station they want to make sure the vehicle is working before we get close to the space station because you know a very bad scenario to have a collision and then theyre going to go ahead and dock and thats going to happen about 1030 Eastern Daylight Time sunday morning and nothing of course doesnt own the rockets it just rents them for the journey as it were so whats this telling us jeremy about the new nasa Business Model Going Forward with these private Space Companies like space x. And boeing. Yeah its a pretty significant change that we that we see with yes it has already happened with commercial cargo call it so already the colonel thats delivered to the space station is delivered by Company Space x. Is one of them but there are other companies to let me go will be in the future that are new ones being developed today and now were doing it with humans the same thing has already been contracted out delivering supplies to lunar orbit for Gateway Program and endeavor to put boots on the moon and the same for the lunar lander and so this is really been a significant shift now i think it you know its some adaptation or you know nasa to work with these more partners in a new way but now were seeing the fruits of all that labor joining them in a final thought from you so what is the Long Term Plan then for nasa i mean theyre talking about trips to the moon as you just mentioned there even deep Space Missions but also opening up corporate space travel and even space tourism. Yeah i think we know one of the things we havent discussed yet is lower earth orbit turning that over commercial so right now its an International Partnership of governments that run the International Space station a goal has been set by nasa to try and shift that to a commercial operation so that you know governments that still do research there or maybe governments wouldnt own the space station and wouldnt operate or that that hasnt happened yet but that is certainly something that looking at nasa has led an International Collaboration to go back to the 1000000 canada we joined at last were going to help build the gateway were building some robotics about a new generation of space for bother to enable that and then thats part of really creating a reusable actually infrastructure to open up the commercial uses of space so it you know the whole goal here is to find ways to bring benefit back to humanity thats what drives all of our agencies and by making it commercial allowing people to invent we might we may create or or find some new incredible benefits or its a kind of jeremy hunt some there from the Canadian Space agency there in houston jeremy thank you very much indeed thank you there are lets go back to those riots now taking place in many cities right across the usa lets go back to los angeles now and talk to correspond there rob reynolds rob so we know the protests have been taking place there as well just bring us up to date with whats been happening all right we dont have rob reynolds but lets just go and listen to the minneapolis governor hes been hes speaking now listen to what he has to say see opportunities for people to show the best of who we are. And we simply asked for cooperation to help us reestablish order on our streets to make it clear that the force that has been put on the ground is there for the long haul. That this is not a place where violence in his anyway going to step on our dilute the message that weve got work to do around racial injustices weve got work to do to bring justice for george and so please know that we will do everything we can to do that im proud of the people are out there delivering that youre going to hear from the mayors of minneapolis and st paul working closely and in the Operations Center making sure things are done the way they need to be done for their citizens and what id like to do tonight is to give you a little bit of the overview of this is as once again present major john jensen the adjutant general the Minnesota National guard could have you know Major General John Jensen Agence general minnesota im reminded tonight that one week ago today Minnesota Guardsmans stood in 6 communities across our state to include minneapolis and st paul our mission was significantly different than a week ago today in support of the department of health we offered Free Community coded 1000 testing a week later we still stand with the citizens of minneapolis and st paul while be maybe in a different role we are there for the citizens and for our 2 mares in accordance with the governors full mobilization of the Minnesota National guard weve been mobilizing Minnesota Guardsman throughout the day specifically in their in their local unit of assignment with future movement into the minneapolis st paul area that effort will be ongoing through today and through tonight and will continue until fully complete it. Once come once completed those soldiers an airman can be expected to be fully integrated into the Police Departments of minneapolis and st paul as well as county and state resources as well but its beyond that as well as beyond that we are also hand in hand with our Fire Departments and our mercy Management Systems as well fully integrated to meet the guidance of the governor while were fully mobilized thank you and at this time will be followed by marriage for i think you know there. We saw a showing of love in minneapolis today thousands of volunteers Residents Community members taking action helping each other pick up the pieces for last night it was pure compassion in an outpouring show of support thats what was on display those of the groups that represent minneapolis that is who we are the groups planning on being out tonight do not support us in any way shape or form these are forces that run antithetical to our values forces that over the last 48 hours have overrun our streets i cannot tell you how completely that has broken my heart. That we are being invaded by those who use the tragic murder of george floyd to tear at the seams of what george himself held to be most true to break our city that is crushing. We need to hold office or show and the other 3 responding officers accountable we need justice we need systemic change but 1st we need to save our city. As the governor mentioned we are now taking extraordinary steps over 100. 00. Firefighters will be available throughout the city ready to respond to anything that comes their way as quickly as possible and with the support of 35 jurisdictions active throughout our city we will prioritize Situational Awareness and. Part of the unified command to respond as the situation demands we will be ready. And we. Demand the very best of our 1st responders the situation demands the very best of our response so please media please. Respond. By giving them the space to protect us. All right so youre watching live pictures there from minneapolis the governor and the mayor jacob try talking to the media gap of there about the response to the protests lets bring in john hendren hes on the scene in minneapolis where the protests continue john so many i guess is gearing up for another night of protest just bring us up to date with what youve been seeing there on the streets. Thats right daryn well its a very different scene now you can tell its a peaceful day here in minneapolis the crowds are gathering there listening to speakers and really nothing negative is going on right now and thats what we saw earlier last evening when we went to the scene where george floyd had been killed there was very peaceful gathering there very respectful but as the night wore on things got a bit violent there are different groups with different objectives here so while you have your hundreds maybe thousands of Peaceful Protesters there were also people who were agitated and if you look over here there are barricades over there that protesters had erected against the police the police and the protesters had a bit of a confrontation last evening that one ended in tear gas as the police moved in and one of the things they were trying to do was to get it some of the many fires that were going on there was one over here there was at a building over there it was entirely engulfed in flames you cant see it but its its past those barricades there and then on the other side we have the kmart store Department Store that had been looted number of people going in and out of there that store was slated for closing so. Well you have a lot of peaceful protesting going on what this city is really focused on is is the violence the mayor and the governor seem to appreciate the anger in the streets and the legitimate anger over the death of george floyd but what theyre trying to do is to quell some of this violent activity and thats why theyve sent in another 1000 National Guard troops to join the 700 who are already here but the demands of the from the people in the streets is that yes its they are satisfied that one of the officers has been arrested and charged with murder but there are 3 other officers who were involved in that event and people want to see all 4 of those officers charged and one suspects that there will be an uprising in the streets possibly after this event anyway but certainly until the 4 of those officers are charged and john listening to the governor. On the mat jacob jacob fried talking at that press conference out of the governor says hes fully mobilizing the National Guard and this is for the 1st time in the States History but is not like to do you think to inflame the situation even more if we see you know the whole thing militarized and. Its hard to say daryn but last night what we saw was that the forces that were available the National Guard and the Police Forces simply werent enough to quell the situation and so yeah it could inflame things because people are going to be upset that their city is occupied by military troops absolutely that could cause problems i did see some back and forth between the National Guard and protesters but at the same time theyre certainly not going to get a hold of the city without a bit more manpower and that seems to be what the governor is trying to do whether that happens or not it certainly hasnt happened over the past several days well see. John before you go i mean what more details im doing now about the arrest of david children the policeman who you are saying that now down on George Floyds neck whats happened to him and also the 3 other Police Officers who were looking in whats happened to them. Well on thursday there was a Major Press Conference where federal and local prosecutors and the f. B. I. Had all gotten together this was a much anticipated event it was on National Television and so a lot of people protesting in the streets would hope that that would end with criminal charges but it didnt the investigators simply said were working on this we will be aggressive and quick please give us your information and what happened in the streets that night was was not pleasant it was there were fires there was an uprising there were clashes between protesters and police and then one day later you had the charges against eric show ven and that from all the people i talked to that did make them satisfied some efforts were being taken they just simply didnt feel it was enough those charges were serious it was manslaughter and 3rd degree murder its very rare that a Police Officer is charged with murder its rarer still that one is convicted and that is yet to come but its unusual that this happened so quickly the prosecutor said this is the quickest they had ever prosecuted and charged a Police Officer all right john hendren live for us in minneapolis john thank you about the lets cross over now to chicago and talk to aljazeera is natasha good name natasha so things seem to be pretty quiet at the moment behind you just tell us whats been happening there. Well there were protests that began at midday at the Federal Plaza in Downtown Chicago its estimated there were up to 3000. 00 protesters and what happened is they began marching and splintered off into different groups another group ended up in front of the trump tower were told the protests were primarily peaceful but there were clashes between protesters and the police about 3 Police Officers from what we had or stand have been injured they have minor injuries there were scenes of people spray painting profanity on Police Vehicles rocking. Squad van scenes of someone burning an American Flag people hurling firecrackers and Water Bottles at Police People trying to push through a wall of Police Officers in riot gear so they could continue marching and as a result the Illinois State police did shut down for a while several highway ramps this follows protests that were violent overnight more than 100 people in chicago were arrested a dozen Police Officers were injured a dozen squad cars damaged the mayor here in chicago Lori Lightfoot shes by the way the citys 1st female africanamerican mayor says that she understands that this george floyd episode has quote under earthed generations of pain and anger among black folks and people of color and their experiences of policing in america but she implored people to try to remain peaceful and said they had their 1st amendment right to protest but to do so without causing violence bear in mind that chicago still has very stubborn consistent rates of coded 19 were in the midst of a pandemic so the the mayor has asked that people social distance and wear masks but of course in other cities the concern about the masks is that theyve been used to disguise people why while they commit crimes in any event for now things are calm but again what youre seeing in chicago is similar to whats playing out in other cities there have been problems here in the Africanamerican Community and communities of color with the Chicago Police department in the past but that is something that the Police Department in the last several years has been working to improve through Community Policing and developing outreach to try to improve the relationship between the police and these communities of color on the. Well what sort of Police Presence have we seen on the streets so these protests have been taking place. While there has there has been a Police Presence and its worth noting its just the Chicago Police department right now so there is no plan from what we understand from the city for the illinois National Guard to be called in the illinois National Guard is monitoring the situation but its not even on standby so what i would say is it appears right now that the city believes that it has the situation under control that unlike in minneapolis they dont believe that theyre going to be outnumbered by protesters and unable to tamp down on any violence. And the tension you were talking about to chicago being a city with a large Africanamerican Community what is the underlying feeling there when they see whats happening in other cities across the u. S. What what what are people telling you. Well certainly there is a feeling of solidarity there has been a case similar to the george floyd case here in chicago there was a man by the name of what Kline Mcdonald who was an armed man killed by police several years ago that sparked a lot of outrage and controversy so again i think chicago like a lot of cities can empathize with have seen men of color die when theyve been unarmed after interacting with the police and theres also a lot of frustration one of the things i do believe is worth mentioning that this may be also more than just a concern about relationships with the police there are communities who feel disenfranchised you go into the west side as i have during the pandemic where the majority of that population was working hourly jobs theyve lost those jobs theyre spending hours in line outside to try to get free food so i think theres just a lot of pressure the pandemic has added to the economic disparities that were seeing in the United States and chicago is a prime example of that is segregated in terms of its communities and in these communities such as the west side in the south side there are very high percentages of violence and unemployment and High School Dropouts and Gang Violence all right in the talks are going to aim there in chicago natasha thank you dont lets go to los angeles now and talk again to rob reynolds rob just bring us up to date with whats been happening there we know there was some violence on the streets one of the police car was overturned but whats been happening there. Earned in the the demonstrations that are going on over several blocks in the middle of the westside of los angeles is an area called the Fairfax District its a pretty upscale. Shopping and entertainment area and there are various sites in that area that are the scenes of confrontations between lines of police and large groups of demonstrators at least one Police Officer were told has been injured and has been taken away there have been a number of arrests and there as you can see here are cars on fire it doesnt appear that there are any buildings on fire at the moment. And as of just a few hours ago the mayor of Los Angeles Eric garcetti declared that there would be a curfew imposed beginning at 8 pm thats a little less than 5 than 3 hours from now coinciding with nightfall and rob what sort of what sort of Police Presence have we seen on the streets there in los angeles. If there is a Police Presence but im struck by the pictures where you see a really theon line of Police Officers facing down a large group of protesters the mayor in his press conference pleaded for restraint he said that he and the the police chief Michael Moore are emphasizing restraint on the part of their Police Officers so they are trying he said not to use nonlethal projectiles not to use. Irritating gases tear gas and and the like other kinds of irritants unless they absolutely have to the mayor said let us give let us give voice to our pain the pain we feel but let us not take it out on the city so very strong and really emotional plea from the mayor of the city for people to take a step back go home and regroup later to to protest peacefully whether or not that. Admonition will be heeded by some groups of protesters remains to be seen because as youve been talking to natasha and to john when night falls things get pretty ugly in many instances in these cities and ive got to say that in many years of reporting in the United States ive never seen this kind of nationwide explosion of protest sometimes violent protest i think youd have to go back to 968 and the reaction to the assassination of dr Martin Luther king to find something that is this widespread derren. All right rob reynolds there live for us in los angeles covering events there rob thank you. Hello im daryn jordan this is aljazeera bringing you extended coverage of the unrest right across the United States over the death of george floyd in minneapolis protests have spread to more than a dozen cities from new york to los angeles where
