A mix of grief and rage as more evidence emerges the government ignored warnings. Greece asked for an urgent a u. Meeting to discuss its growing dispute with turkey of oil and gas reserves beneath the mediterranean sea. And mexicos former president and if that any eto gets sucked into the scandal in latin america and valving bridesmaid brazilian construction. Well after much anticipation joe biden the presumptive u. S. Democratic president ial nominee has chosen his running mate for novembers election Campbell Harris is to be the 1st person of color to be nominated for the post a Vice President in a tweet confirming his pick biden praised sen harriss record on social justice i have the great honor to announce about coming to her wrists a fighter for the little guy and one of the countrys finest Public Servants as my running mate and this is what caliber harris tweeted joe biden can unify the American People because he spent his life fighting for us and as president he would build an america that lives up to our ideals im honored to join him as our partys nominee for Vice President and do what it takes to make him our commander in chief alan fischer reports now from washington. Pamela harris has been the favorite to fill the democrats the piece look for some time im here. She brings a High National profile as a former president ial candidate a senator from california. And family connections to biden she was Close Friends with his late son both because this is my belief child of a mother from india and father from jamaica she takes 2 important boxes as a woman of color. And such and a dynamic or and really good message right shes really good at talking about complicated objects and making a very clear to the audience into the American People former attorney general of california shes used her skills as a prosecutor in Senate Hearings to pick apart arguments put forward by the come to me station but that all title has also brought criticism during her tenure as attorney general there are a lot of questions raised about her when asked to intervene in a variety of types of cases including a Police Excessive use of force our patients as well as areas around drug policy that could really become a problem or. In the 1st democratic president ial candidate debate she had a Tense Exchange when she said joe bidens past few on the segregated schools was heartful but in modern u. S. Politics it all seems a long time ago smart and charismatic shes been the front runner for a reason and 55 more than 20 years younger than the candidate shes seen as the next generation of Democratic Leaders alan fischer aljazeera washington for President Trump has taken aim at harris saying her liberal record gives him plenty of targets as the Election Campaign is. By number one draft pick and well see how she works out she did very very poorly in the. Primaries as you know he was expected to do well. And she was share that happened right around 2 percent. Spent a lot of money here a lot of things happening and so i was a little surprised that he picked her all right like not too hot or castro whos in maryland just outside washington it didnt take long for President Trump in the trunk campaign to respond there i want more they can say. Thats right and their line of attack really is no surprise at all as youve seen in the last weeks and months since the pandemic since those mass protests for black lives matter weve seen President Trump really targeting what he calls the liberal left as his enemy as his foe in the Upcoming Elections and no surprise that he has characterized senator harris as representing what he calls that liberal left while her supporters would very much disagree with that characterization in fact she was seen as more of a safe pick for joe biden in selecting a running mate in fact when harris was writing for to become the president ial nominee of the Democratic Party the fear had been that she wasnt liberal enough that she may not attract enough progressives and now with having that label as a leftist coming from the president and from his campaign ironically there are analysts saying that this might actually help harris attract more of those progresses from the Democratic Party she herself has not fired back against these allegations from the president she has only she has been silent on that on twitter however we expect kind of the harris to join joe biden on a fund raising stage on wednesday will be the 1st time we see them to gather campaigning as running mates and as youve said before shes been characterized by biden as a fearless fighter in his words and expectation is as she will also be hitting back at trunk and hitting him hard and heidi its only oldest now in the elections are in november always starting to see any sort of strategy emerge here i mean by being seen as transformation in the bumps wanting to energize young voters and women. Thats right and certainly in selecting harris as his running partner he has checked many of those boxes selecting a woman of color who is much younger in age and who also from the democratic establishment is seen more as a moderate and as a safe pick at this point joe biden certainly enjoys the advantage if you believe the polling in the us which show him with as much as a double digit lead over President Trump in some very key swing states and so the strategy behind his campaign and picking harris is one more evidence of this is simply to not rock the boat keep it steady keep the amount of support thats behind biden at its current level and grow it and selecting harris as a running partner many are saying that was a good pick to make heidi thank you all right lets bring in species an associate professor of Political Science at Emory University in atlanta georgia. Lets talk 1st about the wider implications of joe bidens pick of comedy has some and some people already saying this is significant and important in political terms as obama doesnt even go beyond that and i think its a very important moment so joe biden is not a transformational candidate and hes not billing himself is that hes the candidate that is pledging to return america to some form of normalcy but hes doing so with an eye towards the future and so somebody might come a heresy a young woman of color couldnt that be transformational so we dont know yet what her future political aspirations are but you can see the future in somebody like comma harrison so that you chair is female and that future is of color and so it is very much embodied in her life story and im not an important point to make because there arent that many black women in positions of power in the u. S. What does this mean for her and also for black women in america broadly. Well this is also a recognition and knowledge mean of the importance of africanamerican women to the Democratic Party coalition so we know that africanamericans had outsized influence in the Democratic Party because in general about 9 out of 10 africanamericans to vote democratic in president ial elections when we break those numbers down by gender africanamerican women are more so democratic than even their black male counterparts and so there has certainly been a push by activists within the Democratic Party and that has certainly been buoyed by the protests this summer for Racial Justice to give africanamericans their due by not just taking their votes and taking them for granted but making sure that africanamericans are very well represented in positions of leadership so this is definitely the culmination of a lot of agitation by Democratic Party activists to make sure that black women are not just behind the scenes providing votes and doing a lot of the grunt work but that they also get to serve you know sit at the table and sit at the seat of power im sure how much does her pick infuse new energy into the biden camp i mean shes relatively young fresh faced articulate and a woman who spoke with her fellow democrats and senate says shell go toe to toe with Vice President mike pence not to the baton to see how she was beaten in such a debate. Obviously i expect that shes going to be a pretty dynamic debater and so well see what the interchange looks like between the 2 of them in general historically Vice President ial candidates havent actually mattered much in terms of their partner being able to gain or lose votes there are some notable exceptions to that and this is the year where the Vice President ial pick could be potentially important given joe bidens age that he had to pick it running mate who looked like she could serve from day one so the 1st thing is to pick somebody who looked like they were young and healthy and then also somebody had the requisite experience in order to be able to step into that position and given senator harriss profile given her demonstrated ability to win a state that seems to be a nice stepping stone to be able to help propel a National Candidacy but also say that especially given the amount of discussion around the importance of picking an africanamerican woman running mate had biden chosen not to pick an africanamerican woman running mate that would have had the potential of de mobile as an africanamerican voters i think it would have been disappointed in the pick and would have seen that as a as a problem im going to final point from you i mean some of joe bidens allies thought that harris was too ambitious i mean trump has already branded her a tax raise and shes also come under fire for her criminal justice record is she a safe enough paragons for the democrats in country rise above all these accusations do you think so i would say that shes safe enough in every Vice President ial nominee has their liabilities and i would say that relative to some of the liabilities of her other of the other potential nominees i think her assets more than outweighed her potential liabilities they think shes going to have to address but she was the safer choice in the consensus choice and some of the murmurings against her i think were rooted in racism and sexism and so theyre going to have to be addressed within the party im going to speak great to get your thoughts thank you for talking to al jazeera thank you thank you. Well political strategist joy when hims believes that choosing a household mobilize more women of color to push for a Democratic Party victory it was black women who have been propelling it who have been the most loyal supporters and loyal voters of the Democratic Party for some time and it was black women that you know following the conversation not only on social media but that was are also being signaled to the Biting Campaign that if you want to infuse the excitement into the race if you want to pull out the people who will knock on doors who will make phone calls who in this pandemic situation will still commit their time and resources to make sure that we have a win in november and thats going to be black women and it was black women who voice that we want to return on the investment that we have given to this party and we demanded representation in terms of a Vice President ial pick that was one of our own demands but we see today that biden understands the moment he understands and wants to. Honor the people who have been loyal to the Democratic Party not only in votes but who actually go out like i do those calls making sure to pull people out to vote and recruit donations in order to make sure we go on to victory. All right time for a short break here aljazeera when we come back back out in force on the streets of mali the opposition rejects figures from breaching. The rhesus Opposition Leader takes refuge in lithuania governments accused of violence against protesters more than spend. Hello there is already the 4 calls across much of asia plenty of time here on the satellite in the last year as i have had some pretty ferocious thunderstorms but really creating a some dramatic images here across into shanghai the Business District as you can see an awful 5 to should be a fine day on wednesday across areas around shanghai but across areas to the west the central areas to the north as well we have got a very distinct line of heavy rain and thunderstorms developing not a bad day generally across the Korean Peninsula or indeed across into japan there will be some showers the could be some thunderstorms but then as we head through thursday this line of rain works its way further tools east and eventually that will also head towards north korea so again very heavy amounts of rain and we could have a some more flooding that we had across into south asia the waynes here of course again very widespread that being very heavy over the last few days meanwhile this up and this is why i was saying the flooding now you can see here the water on the streets but this is what it does of course it really does cause a huge amounts of problems on the roads with the traffic and the rain will continue to add to the flooding across areas of bangladesh weve got more rain in the 4 calls north especially have a bit wary widespread and fairly persistent but really as Madhya Pradesh and again. Through wednesday on into thursday well see the very heavy amounts of rain. Progress. For a serious mistake. Artificial intelligence is slowly invading every aspect of our life.
