eff Bezos has officially entered the chat. Following the announcement that WarnerMedia and Discovery will be merging into one of the largest media companies in the U.S., pending regulatory approval, Variety reports that Amazon also has plans to expand its media empire, apparently making an offer to buy movie studio MGM for $9 billion. It’s no secret that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer—the movie studio that has produced such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Ben-Hur, and the entire Bond franchise—was looking to be bought. In December of 2020, Variety confirmed that there was effectively a “for sale” sign on the studio, and major media companies and tech giants have been circling MGM ever since. Rumors that Amazon was making a serious play for the studio began over the weekend, with industry insiders saying that MGM was worth anywhere from $5 billion to $10 billion.
