An environmental assessment for a proposed site for the Stanley White Recreation Center is currently under 30 day review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to New Bern Parks and Rec Director, Foster Hughes. Hughes said the environmental assessment has been under review by FEMA’s Environmental Planning and Historic branch for several months. On May 5 Hughes was notified that the environmental assessment has now been moved on to the Office of Chief Counsel and the Regional Environmental Officer for review, which will be a 30 day process, he said. The news comes a year after the Stanley White Recreation Center Advisory Committee was established to help plan for rebuilding of Duffyfield landmark, which sustained significant flood damage during Hurricane Florence in 2018 and has been demolished.
