June 2, 2021 Smart lockdowns are supposed to help contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. However, at present, the lockdown in Karachi is becoming one of the major reasons for the spread of the virus. Since businesses are supposed to remain closed on Friday and Sunday, and are allowed to remain open until 6pm on other days, many markets witness huge crowds between 4pm and 6pm. In crowded stores, it is extremely difficult to practice social distancing. In order to curb the spread of the virus, the government should ensure the strict implementation of SOPs (it should ensure that people are wearing masks and are following social distancing). Also, it should focus on getting more people vaccinated. Without these measures, smart lockdowns will not be helpful.
