They were provoked by the President and other powerful people, and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like. Provoked was a carefully chosen word. He’s advertising to the impeachment hearing managers where they should go, but is careful around the word ‘incitement’. Mitch’s other powerful people suggests that he fully recognizes what happened here – the broad lie about the election being stolen was the incitement, and members of Congress and Fox News among others are also guilty.
