The Baltimore City Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam using their main office phone number.
Scammers are spoofing the sheriff's office phone number on caller ID. The scammers pretend to be from the sheriff's office in an effort to get personal information or money from victims. In one instance, a scammer claimed the victim's Social Security number was linked to a stolen car. In another, a scammer attempted to extort someone under the threat of arrest.
In a statement, the sheriff's office said deputies never call anyone to notify them of a warrant for their arrest and never demand money to prevent an arrest.
