Commuters who used a steep canyon shortcut to Interstate 680 in Fremont, Calif., to avoid traffic will need to take the long road to work in the future.
The Fremont City Council unanimously decided to permanently close the steep portion of Morrison Canyon Road, which commuters had taken advantage of in recent years, to all car traffic, as first reported by the San Jose Mercury News. The road remains open for cyclists and pedestrians.
The city's presentation at the council meeting stated that the narrow stretch of road had become a dangerous, busy route, pitting cyclists and hikers against commuter traffic.
