Iain anderson is here, founder of the International Communications agency, cicero group. Afamiliar a familiarface a familiar face as im sure you are aware. Nice to see you. This story with regards to uber, this European Union body as it were will look at a europe wide investigation into what happened at uber. Yes, andi happened at uber. Yes, and i think still the ramifications of this story are just immense and the regulators once again arejust catching immense and the regulators once again are just catching up. Europe is about to introduce this new general Data Protection regulation. Lots of businesses that im working with our spending millions on in fa ct, with our spending millions on in fact, they are estimating that about 7 billion is going to have to be spent in the next couple of years, just being compliant with these regulations. This probe of uber is another example of european authorities really looking hard at some of those us tech firms. What is interesting as well about this eu body is the fact they are bringing together lots of Different Countries within europe. It is a europe wide attack on this. Whereas i guess National Governments will be looking at independently as well. There is a co ordinated response at a european level. The interesting thing for me though is whether or not this is going to turn into a battle between european regulators and us regulators. We have seen that with other Tech Companies that i wont mention here, whether or not europe takes the same path that the american authorities were also investigating uber as well, and i think the asian authorities are starting to look at whether or not they both take the same path or not, thats the interesting question for me. Thank you very much. And iain will be back in about half an hour to review the main stories being covered by the global media. In the meantime, let me fill you in on other stories making the news. A political row has broken out in washington over who is to head a federal financial watchdog. President trump overruled the initial choice and appointed one of his close aides instead. Mick mulvaney, already the white house budget chief, carrying a bag of doughnuts to share with his new colleagues in his latest role as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. His arrival, though, was met by protests from those who believe his appointment by donald trump compromises the independence of what is americas financial watchdog. The consumer watchdog has done itsjob looked out for ordinary people, given them a voice, given them a place to complain to and have their voice heard. And this consumer watchdog is just too important to let it be taken back over by politics as usual. There was already an acting head of the financial Protection Bureau, Leandra English. She was named successor by the outgoing director. But a few hours later, donald trump intervened and handed the job to Mick Mulvaney instead. Director mulvaney has ta ken charge of that agency. And he has the full cooperation of the staff, and appeared there this morning, and things went very well on his first day. It has been nearly two years since a state of emergency was declared in flint, michigan, after the citys water supply was found to be contaminated with lead. What had started as a cost cutting measure resulted in multiple illnesses, and an outbreak of legionnaires disease that caused at least 12 deaths. But, despite the attention this case received, the issue of Water Quality remains a real concern across the us. As part of his America First series, the bbcs Aleem Maqbool sent this report from flint. It has put us just through hell. Theres just no other way to say it. The only thing really unusual about what happened in flint is that the agencies responsible got caught. Before she even knew about the lead poisoning, keri webber recalls her shock when she took her daughter to the hospital. Theyve shown me parts of her skin that you could see the bone in her wrist. And there was literally a line that was not calcified bone, and it was lead, and they were everywhere. It is thought that high lead levels caused a spike in legionnaires disease, infertility, miscarriages, growth abnormalities in unborn children, and behaviour problems, among many other serious effects. Well, the crisis here in flint made National News because of the number of people affected in such an extreme and shocking way. But scientists are worried that millions of americans in other parts of the country are also being poisoned by the water in their homes, but simply dont know it. In fact, water has been found to contain even more poisonous lead levels than in flint in dozens of towns around the country, and it is happening, like it did in flint, because of money. We have not accepted in this country that water, affordable, safe drinking water, is a basic human right. And, if you cant afford to get clean, safe water, thats just your tough luck. The mayor of flint says he was told the water in his city was ok because the state wanted to save money. So we needed to do more, i needed to do more, at the local level, to bring in independent expertise, people who didnt have an adherence to these old standards. And families have toxic water most in communities where so many dont have a voice. Flint is poor. We didnt matter. And it destroyed every flint resident. Youre looking at your kid go through this, or your spouse, or 100,000 people, and knowing that none of them matter enough. Yeah, thats really hard to take. Aleem maqbool reporting there from flint, michigan. Accord in china has sentenced an activist to prison on a charge of subverting state power. Officials are blaming the delay in the vote count on technical issues, saying it may take another two days to get the result from outlying rural areas. But it is feared the there is pressure being put on electoral officials behind the seats. The tension is growing by the hour. The longer this political limbo goes on, the greater the chance the street protests could turn deadly. Salvador nasralla is beginning to persuade people he has won. And even some of the president s own supporters have thrown in the towel. Translation they must accept that they lost, and if they love this country, they should do so for the good of everyone. Translation to be honest, im from the president s party, the national party. But if Salvador Nasralla has won, he is welcome. If he behaves well in government, we will accept him. Still, there is little chance that president fernandez will concede just yet. He was the frontrunner going into this vote, campaigning on his record on the economy and tackling violent crime. But he also controversially pushed to change the constitution to be allowed to stand for re election in the first place, something that many voters have rejected at the polls. In the end, the president s desire to remain in power may have cost in the office. Slightly milder weather for some of us. That is not a sign of things to come. As we had through tuesday, and indeed through the rest of this week, we are back to the cold air. Cold northerly winds right across the country, bringing a mixture of clear spells at some sunshine and some showers as well. And weather showers have been falling through the night across a good part of scotla nd the night across a good part of scotland particular, there is the risk of some icy stretches on untreated roads and pavements. The showers continue through the morning, particularly across northern and eastern parts of scotland. Some of these showers will be wintry. Showers in the northern ireland, the risk of some ice here as well, and showers just beginning to get going across the east coast of england. At through north east england, into the midlands, towards the south east, largely dry with some sunshine want the sun comes up in the morning, and for the south west and wales some showers here. And some of the showers will continue through the day, particular for parts of South West Wales and down towards cornwall. But the focus of the showers will be, yes, across parts of ireland, but particularly northern and eastern scotland and the east coast of england, and these showers increasingly over high ground will be turning wintry. And what will be a cold day for all of us. What will be a cold day for all of us. Five to seven degrees. Now, through tuesday night we keep fairly keen wind, particularly down the east coast. Lots of showers in northern and eastern areas as well. Again, these showers wintry, particular you over high ground and there will be a touch of frost and places, some spots dipping well below freezing. Now, the reason for this cold weather is a clash between High Pressure to the west, low pressure to the east, driving these northerly winds across the country. In this weather set up doesnt change very much over the next few days. Wednesday another cold day. Plenty of crisp sunshine. Still some showers mostly down the eastern side of the country and later in the day on wednesday these showers will start to turn wintry, even the fairly low levels, i suspect, because these temperatures will be dipping away all the while. Thursday probably the coldest day of the week. Plenty of sunshine. Some showers to the west, lots of showers to the east. The showers could bring some snow to fairly low levels, actually. Three to five degrees on the thermometer but in the strength of the winds it will feel sub zero actually in quite a few places. So for the rest of the week a cold wind to contend with. There will be some crisp sunshine. You will also be some wintry showers. There will also be some wintry showers. This is Business Briefing. Im sally bundock. Here are the headlines.
