Two premier League Footballers have been the victims of an attempted carjacking by an armed gang in london. The arsenal players mesut ozil and Sead Kolasinac were targeted, but both escaped uninjured. Footage on social media appears to show kolasinac chasing the robbers away. Simonjones reports. The arsenal defender, defending himself and teammate mesut ozil, whos in the 4x4, against bikers believed to be armed with knives. Sead kolasinac darts towards the front of the vehicle to fend off one attacker, and then with agility normally seen on the football field, he turned his attention to the other biker at the back. But the ordeal isnt over. The footballers were then pursued for around a mile by the men on motorbikes, they abandoned their 4x4 here, they raced into this turkish restaurant to ask for help. They had phoned the owner, who is a friend, as they were being pursued. So when they arrived at the restaurant, staff are able to chase the bikers away empty handed. We didnt first of all understand what has happened, and then when we see the motorbike passing from here, we realised its serious. Mesut ozil, arriving home after training, knows he has his friends to thank for intervening. Was it a scary experience . It was different, but its ok now. Kolasinac tweeted he was fine. Arsenal say they will be reminding their squad how to keep safe and continuing to review security measures with the police. The players know this could have ended very differently. Now on bbc news, its the travel show. Coming its the travel show. Up on this weeks programme we re coming up on this weeks programme, were in new york with the Guardian Angels as a mark a0 years of keeping the city subway safe. They used to be so much graffiti on the trains you can see out the window. And a lwa ys you can see out the window. And always fights and stabbings and shootings and gain activity, the violence was off the hook. Our global guru has some top tips on road dripping in europe. Plus, we are behind the scenes at the world s largest open air gallery in central spain. You dont realise until you get this close the actual size and scale of what they are painting, it is enormous. Hello and welcome to the travel show, this week we are kicking off by heading to new york city. Every year over 30 Million People visit from all across the world. Back in the 19705 the city had a notorious crime record and was not so welcoming to overseas vi5itor5. But 30 years ago the volunteer group the Guardian Angels tried to do something about it, and they are still going strong today. In the late 705 the subway5 were, it was just an attack on your senses. The 5mell just an attack on your senses. The smell of youre in, defecation, they would be graffiti everywhere, broken window5. Would be graffiti everywhere, broken windows. The gangs would patrol up and down the trains and they would control certain line5, and down the trains and they would control certain lines, and you would never see a cop. The Guardian Angels 5ta rted never see a cop. The Guardian Angels started in fact right here in the bronx. I was a night manager of mcdonalds, and i just bronx. I was a night manager of mcdonalds, and iju5t decided to organi5e my closing crew to ride this very same train, it used to be called the margots express, the numberfor train. Called the margots express, the number for train. Thi5 called the margots express, the number for train. This was a baptism of fire, this was the epicentre of criminaland gain of fire, this was the epicentre of criminal and gain activity in the late 705. Muggers expre55. The subway5 have improved immeasurably from what it was like when we first started. Now there are others out there who flu5h them5elve5 started. Now there are others out there who flu5h themselves to women. Now we have a per busters unit, led by women who prioritise that, because we want to empower women to fight back. Flu5h them5elve5. Because we want to empower women to fight back. Flush themselvesm i5 catchy, it gets people to stop and notice and it makes sense. Sexual a55ault and notice and it makes sense. Sexual assault on the subway i5 and notice and it makes sense. Sexual assault on the subway is on the rise, and our very daring. They wa nt to the rise, and our very daring. They want to be on social media, they wa nt to want to be on social media, they want to be on social media, they want to be out there, it is so usually on patrol you after one or two perve5 a night. Usually on patrol you after one or two perves a night. You have two different events going on simultaneously. You have a lot of photos and calls us into us, we have to make sure that they are legitimate and that is when we put out the flyer and we go out to the location of said incident and take it from there. You get off at 190th. It from there. You get off at 190th. It it from there. You get off at 190th. It is it from there. You get off at 190th. It is not it from there. You get off at 190th. It is not taken seriously so 190th. It is not taken seriously so much because they know our great state of new york is not enforcing sexual crimes, they know they are not going to get charged seriously, it is not going to get charged seriously, it i5a not going to get charged seriously, it is a revolving door. The first significant moment was when i was five years old and my 5i5ter when i was five years old and my sister was eight. We were with our mum, coming up the subway stares at 183rd, we were on the other side of oui mum 183rd, we were on the other side of our mum and i was in the middle and we we re our mum and i was in the middle and we were coming up our mum and i was in the middle and we were coming up the stairs, halfway up the stairs right here was where a guy passed u5, halfway up the stairs right here was where a guy passed us, he grabbed my mothers purse and pulled her back down the stairs. I can still remember, me and my sister was 5creaming, remember, me and my sister was screaming, and we were scared because something really bad happened to my mother, and even to this day it gets to me, thats all i remember, screaming and my mother, thankfully, 5he remember, screaming and my mother, thankfully, she was not seriously injured, but Something Like that, if it affects me to this day, i can imagine what they think it is simple crime as far as groping or flashing, thatis crime as far as groping or flashing, that is with your life. On any given day we have roughly half a Million People writing the subway5. We want to make sure commuters are getting to make sure commuters are getting to and fro 5afely, keeping anything from happening, preventing crime as well as sexual assaults that are happening on the rise, we are looking up for everything. If we see it we stop it. Now what you see a lot of that you didnt see before, emotionally disturbed people, homeless people, oftentimes the trains are not clean, so aesthetically its bad and its not good for the emotionally disturbed or homeless. But i would still acce pt or homeless. But i would still accept what exists now compared to what used to be, they used to be so much graffiti in the trains you couldnt see out the window. And always fights and stabbings and shootings, and gang activity. The violence was off the hook. Its a big difference but we have to keep it that way, we cant just assume its going to stay that way. Whats up, man . We are worried about you. Are you cops . No, we are making 5ure you. Are you cops . No, we are making sure everybody is ok. You, big guy, who are you staring at . Are you hiding behind women. Sir, be mindful of whats going on. Commotion. Come down we will put ha ndcuff5 commotion. Come down we will put handcuffs on you. I will sue you, i wa nt handcuffs on you. I will sue you, i want my lawyer, i will sue you i will sue you so the two of you, i will sue you so the two of you, i will get into your faces. 0ver will sue you so the two of you, i will get into your faces. Over the la st will get into your faces. Over the last 40 years as a leader of the Guardian Angels and very it out on patrol, they have been a number of occasions where i put myself in harm s way. Sit down, sit down, take it easy. And in the beginning of the group, it was extraordinarily dangerous before we were recognised by the police, we had six Guardian Angels shot and killed on the line of duty, three dozen injured, many of duty, three dozen injured, many of them still going through therapy for the injuries that they suffered long ago. Now we have gone through three generations of Guardian Angels, some of whom have gone on to become Police Officers themselves. So the exception is positive, even though we remain independent and autonomous. The purpose of putting up autonomous. The purpose of putting up the flyers, sometimes people dont want to take them, so we put them up as a Public Awareness thing, so them up as a Public Awareness thing, so they can at least view it and almost always they will take 5creen5hot5, a5 almost always they will take 5creen5hot5, as long as they get seen 5creen5hot5, as long as they get seen and talked about, and people pa55 seen and talked about, and people pass on the information, that is our main focus, and we are relentless, will keep at it. For the last four years, will keep at it. For the last four years , we will keep at it. For the last four yea r5, we have will keep at it. For the last four years, we have been seeing a lot more uprising in sexual crime5. We usually pa55 the5e more uprising in sexual crime5. We usually pa55 these out, it is an information flyer because we do a patrol called perve busters, and we usually pa55 patrol called perve busters, and we usually pass up the car because not eve ryo ne usually pass up the car because not Everyone Wants to call the police. So we feel the information, we put oui so we feel the information, we put our flyer5 so we feel the information, we put our flyers and we pass on the information to pdf necessary. We try to do our best. When we are in the Guardian Angel uniform is a big deal, we get noticed a lot because the red stand out to begin with, and we definitely wa nt out to begin with, and we definitely want people to see us, so something i5 want people to see us, so something is going on, its for them to look at us, and feel a sense of safety. They have always told us that over the years, when they see us they feel safe. I just the years, when they see us they feel safe. Ijust want the years, when they see us they feel safe. I just want to shut out to this man, what he has done for new york city. I am exuberant about the potential and possibilities of the potential and possibilities of the Guardian Angels in the future, notjust here the Guardian Angels in the future, not just here and the Guardian Angels in the future, notjust here and now, i believe in self help and i notjust here and now, i believe in self help and i believe notjust here and now, i believe in self help and i believe that notjust here and now, i believe in self help and i believe that one woman, one man can make a difference, and i think we have prove n difference, and i think we have proven that over 40 years. s do stay with us on the travel 5how s do stay with us on the travel show because coming up there you 90, show because coming up there you go, like that . Pauljoin5 the arti5t5 making a splash in central spain. Its quite addictive. So dont go away. Back here in the present, mario from montreal in canada says a rental car can be very helpful in ireland and scotland where the traffic is relatively light and public transport is sparse. But the co5ts public transport is sparse. But the costs of taking a rental car acro55 the irish sea which divides tho5e countries can be very high. So rent one car in ireland, return it, then ta ke one car in ireland, return it, then take a ferry or fly acro55 one car in ireland, return it, then take a ferry or fly across to scotland. Theres lots of choice. Rent another vehicle, but drop it back and make your intercity travel in england by rail. Relatively fa5t and with a bit of advance planning, extremely good value. Sue wilson was travelling north west of paris, at what she thought was a legal 5peller that speed limit of 80 kilometres an hour. But she says to help out with this, ive sought 5ome 5pecialist to help out with this, ive sought 5ome specialist knowledge. To help out with this, ive sought some specialist knowledge. Its true, after the last ten years, cooperation between administrations in europe are much better than they used to be and wherever you come from, if you have a fine in france, they will find you in your home country in the second reason is speed Camera Technology has improved. Well probably fly to london and are thinking of going south west. We might stop in a couple of places like stonehenge. Is there anywhere el5e like stonehenge. It leaves west from london and takes on some splendid locations including wind5or, stately home5 splendid locations including wind5or, stately homes and the thame5 wind5or, stately homes and the Thames Valley in the county of wiltshire and ends in bath and then bri5tol. Diversions zero to the cotswold5 and south to stonehenge are easy. The route even has its own website, with details, attractions and accommodation. From the western end, you can make a magnificent journey along the north coast of devon and cornwall, visiting the ruined car castle at tim tatchell steeped in legend. You could follow the 830 road to its natural conclusion that lands the 830 road to its natural conclusion that lands end but i think coastal towns such as st ives and fowey are more rewarding. Wherever you are heading, im here to help. Send in your questions and i will do my very best. From me, simon calder, the global guru, bye for now. See you next time. To finish off, we are heading to spain and to see you dad rial, 5outh finish off, we are heading to spain and to see you dad rial, south of madrid. Its part of a region known a5 empty spain because so many people have moved away to bigger cities and towns to search for work but now there is a big new public art project seeking to draw people back and want to get in the communities they left behind. Made famou5 communities they left behind. Made famous by cervantes descriptions of don quixotes travels through lunch, much of the landscape remains and built on. With rural town5 much of the landscape remains and built on. With rural towns in villages dotted throughout, along with these iconic windmills. But now, this is happened. Arti5t5 are transforming the landscape helped by locals with learning difficulties and the results are spectacular. The5e and the results are spectacular. These giant warehouses were built to hold grain. So far, seven silos across the ciudad real province have been painted and im travelling to help out with another. Its not hard to find. You dont realise until you get close to it, be a the absolute skies and scale of what they are painting, its enormous. The artist has been flown in with his team from the us just to paint the whole silo. At the base, i am starting with the basics. I havent paid on anything since i was a kid and that was colouring books and i wasnt really any good at staying on the lines then either. I am more Dick Van Dyke than vincent van gogh, to be honest. These volunteers are from a local organisation to help people with different abilities feel pa rt people with different abilities feel part of the community. This major project called i am titanes was their idea. With this project, have you noticed a benefit and a change in the volu nteers a benefit and a change in the volunteers and the people you are working with . This part of the country is known as empty spain, with rural towns like these slowly losing people to the bigger cities and failing to attract new visitors. 0nly10 of the population live across 70 of the land. Thats barely 1a inhabitants per square kilometre. Naichos is a world renowned urban artist and is bringing life back to these communities. Im very impressed by yourjob. We put the drawing on top and me and eric are going to help you guys doing that. It looks like its my turn. Do you think you can get the gradient . Lets give it a go. You can spray upwards. There we go. You can spray upwards. There we go. Like that . Oh, well. Its quite addictive. For me, i painted my first piece. In terms of this kind of project and working with the people you got here, have you ever done anything like this before. People you got here, have you ever done anything like this beforelj have done anything like this before. have to say, i didnt expect that they were that into it and had such a huge understanding. Im so happy because i feel like we should integrate art way more in everyones lives. In so many ways, people think, art is only for the rich and you have to go to the museum to see some art but everyone can do it. I believe that everyone is inside somewhere in artist. Its hope that the work of these International Artists will attract their fans and others to the region. And on hand to show you around. Nice to meet you. Are the volunteers who help paint them. This one is here, where we are
