Fires in the amazon. From this vantage point, you get a sense of the scale of the disaster facing the region of the amazon. Hectare facing the region of the amazon. Hecta re after facing the region of the amazon. Hectare after hectare of pristine forest, just going up in smoke. And coming up. The huge street party begins. More than a Million People are expected at Notting Hill Carnival this bank holiday weekend. Good afternoon. It was one of the most astonishing innings in the history of test match cricket. With england heading towards a humiliating defeat which would have seen australia retain the ashes, ben stokes hit an amazing centiry to give england an unlikely one wicket victory. After collapsing forjust 67 runs in the first innings, this time england needed 359 to clinch the game. That looked a long way off when stokes was joined by the last manjack leach, still needing 73 to win. Stokes then launched a stunning solo assault to win the game and bring the series level at 1 1. 0ur sports presenter, 0lly foster is in our sports centre. Try summing that up. How about the words from the former captain and test match great alistair cooke, who said it is the most extraordinary test innings played by an england batsman. Ben stokes was at the crease at the start of the day alongside his captain, joe root. Joe root was dismissed very early and australia simply took the wickets with great regularity. But the one co nsta nt at with great regularity. But the one constant at headingley was ben stokes, as partners came and went, he had a fairly Healthy Partnership withjonny he had a fairly Healthy Partnership with jonny bairstow, he had a fairly Healthy Partnership withjonny bairstow, but he had a fairly Healthy Partnership with jonny bairstow, but then, he had a fairly Healthy Partnership withjonny bairstow, but then, the last man standing alongside him, the number11, last man standing alongside him, the number 11, jack leach. They put on 76 runs together to win the match. Jack leach scored just one of those runs. It was an astonishing assault from ben stokes. Remember, just a few months ago, six weeks ago, he called his innings in the World Cup Final to beat new zealand and win the world cup for england, in the one day game, he said that was once in a lifetime stuff but 135 not out, with 11 boundaries, eight sixes, to keep the ashes alive and draw england back into the series at 11, this draw england back into the series at 1 1, this has got to go down as one of the greatest england test innings and one of the great test matches, i think this summer has breathed new life back into english cricket. Certainly on this test alone, test cricket as well, just when you thought it was a dying form of the game, and this from the england captain in the last couple of bits, talking about ben stokes, joe root says hes a freak, hes incredible. The message at the start of the day was to just keep believing, if we had two people out there, still breathing, then we had a chance is great. They certainly did and it was a record run chase for england to wina a record run chase for england to win a test match as well, needing 359, they looked down and out, especially as you said after the first innings when they were bowled out for 67 with ben stokes making a measly eight and only one batsman reaching double figures. Well, ben stokes has kept england alive and this ashes series is still alive at 11. In terms of the context of this, in the world of cricket, if you are not a cricket fan, if you get to the fourth innings and you need more than about 250, say, you very rarely get them, dont you . Yes, because the pitch has deteriorated and nathan lyon is one of the worlds top spin bowlers for australia, we expected the pitch at headingley to start doing things, acting a little bit peculiarly, the surface breaks up so the pace bowlers will be looking for the ball to act awkwardly. It should become a lot more difficult for batsmen when you reach days four and five, and remember this was only the fourth day of the third test. England were skittled so spectacularly in the first innings. Australia had all the time in the world to get me ten wickets but obviously, england had a lot of time to get the runs but the odds were always stacked in australias favour but my word, they we re australias favour but my word, they were absolutely shell shocked when ben stokes hit another boundary to bring up the victory for england by one wicket. It had echoes of edgbaston in 2005, that famous test victory when england won the game by two runs, remember Freddie Flintoff consoling a disconsolate brett lee out in the middle when australia fell just short. England just out in the middle when australia felljust short. England just got across the line and all the comparisons, because it was headingley, going back even further to another great england all rounder ian botham who was 140 odd not out in the famous headingley test against australia when they got back into it. This was even more remarkable because of the match situation. Ian botham just went for it but ben stokes knew that it was all on him today. Just as he did in the World Cup Final, he delivered yet again. But perhaps this is his greatest test innings, and in the words of alistair cooke, perhaps the greatest anyone has ever seen. Thank you forjoining us. More from you know that later in the hour. 0llie. 0n know that later in the hour. 0llie. On that remarkable test victory for england at headingley. Borisjohnson has told the bbc that its now touch and go whether the uk will leave the eu with a deal on october the 31st. Speaking at the g7 summit in biarritz, the Prime Minister said he had to be prepared to leave without a deal in order to convince brussels to scrap the current withdrawal agreement. The Prime Minister, who this morning had his first face to face meeting as Prime Minister with president trump, also admitted it would take more than a year to negotiate any future trade deal with the united states. He was speaking to our chief Political Correspondent vicki young. Side by side, the american president and the man he says is the right person to deliver brexit. Borisjohnson says there are massive opportunities for british businesses, if a trade deal can be done, but critics say it could take years. We are going to do a fantastic deal. The us and british teams sat down for a working breakfast donald trump promising a very big trade deal that could be done very quickly. A very big trade deal, bigger than we have had with the uk. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he was optimistic. The americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible and they really want results, within a year, i suppose, by nextjune orjuly. We are keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thorough going, comprehensive trade deal. There is no point having a deal just in agriculture, industrial goods and so on. That is not where the real advantages are for the uk. Experts say it cannot be done in a year, its going to take years. I think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. What about a deal closer to home with the eu . Borisjohnson also sat down with the president of the European Council today. I think that it all depends on our eu friends and partners. I think, in the last few days, that there has been a sort of dawning realisation, in brussels and other european capitals, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. Have you detected more of a willingness . Look, i think. I am an optimist, but i do think they understand it. Its going to take more than optimism, isnt it . I do think they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal, but they also understand. Is it more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going to be touch and go, but the important thing is to get ready to come out without a deal. I was going to ask you about that. That greatly assists us in a couple of ways. As you know, it means that. It helps us to convince our friends and partners of the necessity to do a deal, but it also minimises any disruption that there may be on october the 31st. The main talks at this summit focus on the Global Economy and security, but brexit remains the most pressing issue for Boris Johnson. Vicki young is in biarritz for us. I asked her earlier what she would highlight from her conversation with the Prime Minister. I think its interesting he feels he detects a shift in the conversations with Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel last week. That he and downing street do feel those conversations about a new brexit deal, they might be ready to start. They could be meaningful and that has obviously come from a position where, for a very long time, the eu and brussels have said they are not opening the withdrawal agreement. But borisjohnson is an optimist as he says and thinks there can be a deal but wants to carry on preparing for no deal. That is still the interesting thing. We are talking aboutjust over two months time, borisjohnson made it clear he will leave with or without a deal at the end of october. But the prospect of that no deal and what it really means for people is still something that is hard to pin down. He wasnt really willing to explain what it might be. In the past, he has talked about it being bumpy and about there being bumps on the road. Does that mean job losses, does it mean fuel rationing, Food Shortages . It is very hard to know. I did manage to get a guarantee about medicines. Lots of people are concerned that if things are snarled up at the border because of customs checks, they wont be able to get the essential medicines they need. I said could he guarantee people will get access to them . He said it was a guarantee he could make, which is the first time he has done that. He believes the nhs and access to medicines will continue to run smoothly, even in the event of a no deal brexit. Those chances of a no deal brexit, not so long ago, coming out of his mouth, it was a million to one chance, but that has clearly changed in his view . Yes, they think the deal is still possible but going from a million to one where they think a deal with incredibly easy to get, he says we are now at a point where it is touch and go. He cannot be sure of that. Some people think parliament will stop it from happening. It is not entirely clear they are sure they can do that. His argument and downing streets argument is we continue to prepare for no dealfirstly, because they feel that as a negotiating position, it helps convince the eu that we are serious about it, as if we are ready to do it, it will give us some leverage. But we have to be ready for the disruption. He said that at some point we will disentangle ourselves from the eu, even if we get a deal so we need to make the preparations anyway and they wont be wasted. The Iranian Foreign minister, javad zarif, has made an unscheduled trip to biarritz, after the french president , emmanel macron, said g7 leaders meeting there had agreed a common stance on tehrans nuclear deal. French officials said mr zarif would meet his french counterpart, jean yves le drian, to discuss what conditions would de escalate tensions between washington and tehran. Ros atkins is in biarritz for us. This was somewhat unexpected . It certainly was, we started getting reports, first from a flight tracking website, telling us that an iranian plane had landed just a few hundred metres up the road from where i am standing in the g7 press enter. Everyone was thinking, who is it . Most likely to be the foreign minister but is it . After about half an hour, confirmation came through from the Foreign Ministry that javid zarif was in biarritz and when we had that, we thought it mail macro must have arranged it with president trump, maybe there would not be a meeting with the americans but at least it would be cleared with them because it might antagonise the americans and particularly the president. But it seems according to all the diplomatic sources, notjust speaking to the bbc but other media outlets, that the americans, extraordinarily, did not know this was going to happen. We await a reaction from donald trump on this. He was asked about it earlier, and very rarely, he does not say this very rarely, he does not say this very often, he said, no comment, so very often, he said, no comment, so im sure he will have one, given some time but we are di quite a move by president macron right now. Diejust in quite a move. What by president macron right now. Die just in quite a move. What about the other discussions on trade and the other discussions on trade and the fires in the amazon . What else can you highlight for us . |j the fires in the amazon . What else can you highlight for us . I can pull out a few things. 0n trade, the europeans, all of them, boyles borisjohnson, donald europeans, all of them, boyles Boris Johnson, donald tusk, europeans, all of them, boyles borisjohnson, donald tusk, emanuel macron, Angela Merkel, have all in different ways have expressed regret for the fact that donald trump is pursuing a trade war with china and being so aggressive in his language towards europe on trade. Mr trump denied he was being pressured by his european allies. But whatever language the leaders choose, there is no doubt theyjust simply dont agree on this. What i would emphasise, though, is there is no sign the europeans are going to start accepting the nature of this trade war and there are no signs the americans are going to change tack. So from that, they seem to be agreed to disagree. 0n the issue of trade between the uk and the us, theres been a lot of talk about that. There was a breakfast bilateral meeting between Boris Johnson was a breakfast bilateral meeting between borisjohnson and donald trump. Both of them in a very good mood, seemingly getting along very well. Donald trump actually said, we wa nt well. Donald trump actually said, we want to get this done in the yea r we want to get this done in the year, borisjohnson said that might bea year, borisjohnson said that might be a bit ambitious but they want to sit down and get stuck into negotiations very soon. It is worth emphasising, though, that despite the good atmosphere around the table, Donald Trumps headline sta nce table, Donald Trumps headline stance with all policies is america first. That is going to be front and centre in the minds of his negotiators when they sit down and work out a trade deal with the us and the uk. Those are the two main strands of the trade side of this summit, i will quickly mention the ra i nfo rest summit, i will quickly mention the ra i nforest in summit, i will quickly mention the rainforest in brazil as well, Emmanuel Macron today has said the g7 wants to do everything it can to support brazil with these fires but bearin support brazil with these fires but bear in mind a couple of days ago he was threatening to veto a big trade deal between south america and europe, andi deal between south america and europe, and i think we should bear in mind that when he says they want to help brazil, that may come in the form of a carrot or a stick. They have various devices they could use to try to get zille to be more about the fires and more about deforestation. To try to get brazil to do more. We have no idea what form that pressure might take. Thank you forjoining us. Talking about brazil, there. Brazilian troops are tackling the Record Number of fires in the amazon rainforest, with planes dropping water and chemicals in an attempt to extinguish the flames. President bolsonaros government is promising to ease austerity measures in order to find extra money to tackle the emergency. 0ur correspondent will grant has been on board a greenpeace plane and flown over some of the affected area. From this vantage point, you get a sense of the scale of the disaster facing this region of the amazon. Hectare after hectare of pristine forestjust going up in smoke. It must be thousands of hectares already, and its a huge task for the troops who are supposedly reaching this region and who are going to try to tackle the problem, sent by president bolsonaro. This is the reason for the protests taking place in the large cities of brazil in sao paulo, brasilia, in rio. And its also caused the international outcry. This is a global crisis, because these are considered the lungs of the world. And, just on a human level, on an emotional level almost, it is extremely upsetting, extremely disturbing, to see this kind of devastation unfolding in front of you. Now the forest has already been cut back for timber and is much weakened. So when the fires are started, they take very easily, particularly given this dry weather. But the activists say the problem is this is just the beginning of the season of dry weather, that things are going to get a lot worse before they improve. The headlines on bbc news. Batting brilliance from ben stokes leads england to a nail biting victory over australia and keeps the ashes series alive. Borisjohnson says the chances of a brexit deal are touch and go, ahead of his meeting with the Eu Council President at the g7 summit. President trump says a very big trade deal after brexit is on the menu as he holds a working breakfast with the Prime Minister. British airways has apologised after admitting it mistakenly told some passengers their flights were cancelled. Pilots are going on strike on the 9th, 10th and 27th next month, but some customers with flights on other days were wrongly asked to re book, or get a refund. British Airways PassengerCaroline Payne told me how shed had to book a second flight after she was told her flight was cancelled, only to be told her originalflight had been reinstated. We got an e mail, i think it came through in the early hours of the morning saying our flight had been cancelled. That was it. So you know, we thought, my goodness, what are we going to do . Tried to phone ba, couldnt get through. No joy, so we thought we had better rebook because otherwise we have a lot of arrangements to alter. So we rebooked through air canada at great expense. Where were you due to be going . To seattle on the 8th of september. You rebooked with air canada at significant cost, so where do you stand now . I would like to speak to ba, but it is virtually impossible because every time you ring, it is either you cannot get through. We managed to get through and press number one, whatever it was we had to press and then the phone went dead. We have still got to contact ba orfor them to contact us would be nice. You are now under the impression, am i right in saying, the flight you thought was cancelled is now back on . Yes, then in the evening, we got another e mail saying the flight is back on. Ok, you now have got potentially the ba flight that you had originally and an air canada flight and you are how much out of pocket . 2,500. Any word on what might happen to that 2,500 . No. What would you like from ba at this point . I would like a flight and a refund. The efforts to do that are involving what, from your point of view . I would like ba to phone me. Why should i have to be on the phone holding on the phone all the time trying to get hold of them . We are their customers. They should be phoning us, apologising and sorting it out one way or another. When you first heard the strikes were going to happen, were there any questions in your mind at that point as to whether you might be affected . With the cancellation . Yes. Or the pilots strike . The pilots strike, when it was announced, did you have doubts it would happen . No, the pilots strike was supposed to be on the 9th, our flight was on the 8th, so we thought it was fine. The flight coming back was going to miss the strike, so we thought great, we are going to miss this. Then the early hours of the next morning, we got the e mail, saying the flight was cancelled. Listen, you are not alone, i am sure that is no consolation, plenty of others in the same boat. I hope you get some joy in the next 24 hours or so and things pan out for you. Yes, i would like ba to contact us. If ba are watching, there is caroline, she would like a call. Seven people including two children have died after a mid air collision between a helicopter and a plane in mallorca, according to authorities there. The accident happened in the inca region of the spanish island. Emergency services are attending the scene. The uks only active fracking site has experienced its second earthquake in a week. The tremor last night was the largest recorded at the lancashire site, measuring 2. 1 on the richter scale. The previous record was 1. 5, set on wednesday. Energy Firm Cuadrilla say last nights tremor lasted around a second and happened at 11 oclock, while fracking was not taking place. Riot police have fired tear gas and baton charged protesters in hong kong. The latest clashes come as the protests enter their 12th week. They began in response to a controversial extradition bill but have since grown into broader Anti Government demonstrations. 0ur correspondent Stephen Mcdonnell has sent this report from where some of the worst clashes have been happening. This is a new development, these protesters, instead of waiting for the police to come and clear them out, they are moving their barricades towards the police. It is obviously a clear provocation. The police have been firing tear gas and you can see the projectile coming back across the barricades from the protesters. It seems we are back to the situation of a few weeks ago with protesters and police having a pitched battle here. Perhaps the police dont have enough numbers yet to clear this many protesters away. More molotov cocktails are also being thrown. The protesters move forward again and then they back away together as the police are firing their non lethal rounds back at them. Every now and then we see something on fire over the other side and molotov cocktails going off on the street. Protesters are certainly upping the ante in terms of the weapons they are using against the police. This is despite the warning, despite the warning they have had that the police will come in with some force and clear this area. I have not seen as many petrol bombs thrown in the whole campaign as we have seen today. Now we can see why the police were holding off. They were waiting to bring in their new piece of gear. These are the water cannon trucks, which the Hong Kong Police have been threatening to use. As soon as the trucks came, i can tell you, the protesters who had been digging in, building barricades, fighting with the police, they scarpered very quickly. And possibly this is one of the reasons why this has now been brought forward because i think the protesters realise they cant withstand the force that would come from the water cannon on these trucks. Over a Million People are expected at the Notting Hill Carnival in west london over the next two days. A72 a 72 second silence for grenfell will begin now. Earlier this afternoon, a 72 second silence was held, to remember those who died in the fire at grenfell tower. The tower block is within half a mile of the parade route. Greg mckenzie is in notting hill for us. Good afternoon. Carnival is well under way here in west london and by the end of the day over a Million People will have taken to the carnival footprint. Today is traditionally known as childrens day, so behind us, many of the children are competing for the title of best costume. 15,000 costumes in total and more than a million man hours to put them together. Now, carnival every year, there is a debate, its so big, 1 Million People. Some people are campaigning to have it moved. The london mayor sadiq khan has spoken to us in the last few minutes and he said the Notting Hill Carnival will always remain here as long as it is on his watch. Ive been lobbied by conservative mps to move the carnival. Im quite clearly on the side of history. Carnival here first began in 1966. It is the 53rd year. Of course there are challenges, we are the victim of our success. We want to make sure bad people dont come here to commit crimes and cause mischief. All of us have a role to play in making sure carnival keeps at its essence the community aspect. So, many people just enjoying the music, the food and the sounds of the caribbean. Carnival was introduced here to the uk over 50 years ago. It was the Windrush Generation who introduced it here. Today is about remembering those people from the caribbean who came here to help rebuild this country following world war ii. Of course, childrens day today and tomorrow is when the adults come and things will start at about 10am and run until 8pm in the evening. Lets return now to the meetings between World Leaders at the g7 summit in biarritz, france. President trump met with borisjohnson and promised a very big trade deal with the uk, saying its departure from the eu will be like losing an anchor round the ankle. Earlier i spoke to sam lowe, whos a Senior Research fellow and trade expert at the centre for european reform, an independent, pro european think tank. I started by asking him what he found most significant from the meeting between donald trump and borisjohnson. We perhaps need to differentiate between a Free Trade Agreement and an agreement that has an impact on trade. I thought it was interesting that when Boris Johnson listed his things of, his things of. His aggressive interest for the uk, so he listed Melton Mowbray pork pies and restrictions on shower stalls being able to be sold to the us and he also listed some really big things like scrapping thejones act which is a piece of legislation in the us that prevents foreign ships from transporting cargo between us ports. Some of those things are impossible or not going to happen, so getting rid of thejones act, opening up Insurance Markets at state level, you dont do that in a trade agreement with the us because the us Single Market is not even as comprehensive as the eus in some places and donald trump cant do that. 0n the smaller aspects, those tiny regulatory issues, could those things be changed . Maybe. Could they be packaged as a trade agreement that was done quickly for the papers back in the uk . Perhaps. And he also talked about, in terms of a timetable, a year would be, i think his word was tight, but when pushed on that, he wentjust beyond the year and suggested that within maybe a year and a half, there is a possibility that something could emerge here. Again, the reality of that as far as you are concerned . So it is certainly possible to sign an agreement with the us quickly in the event of no deal but it does require the uk to concede on nearly all of the aggressive asks of the us. These are largely to do with agriculture but we have seen other news items recently around the process by which the uk procures medicine and the like. And if the uk is prepared to concede in these areas, then yes, you can do a trade agreement fairly quickly. Of course, you still have some issues on the us side in that you now have a caucus within congress who have said that if brexit and a no deal brexit disrupts the good friday agreement, they are not going to vote for any trade agreement on the us side. So i wonder if you might see donald trump and borisjohnson getting together and trying to find something that donald trump can do which is solely within his competence. For example, excluding the uk from some of the Trump Trade War tariffs in return for the uks support, say, on iran or some other Foreign Policy objectives. That could be something that they could get over the line quickly whereas an actual trade negotiation, especially the uk being determined to negotiate and notjust concede, will certainly take a long time. I wonder whether critics of where we are might say to you, and this is not a criticism coming from me, but are you basing your analysis on what has always gone before, whereas we are now looking at such a new situation, notjust because of what the uk is doing, but also because of the current occupant of the white house . Yes. Maybe the previous rules cannot be thrown out of the window . Maybe the previous rules can all be thrown out of the window . I think to a degree and that is why i am pointing towards some smaller type agreements which are solely within Donald Trumps competence which, perhaps if the uk could find something to offer, we could maybe see something happen quickly. Im certainly not ruling that out. But when we come to fully blown Free Trade Agreements and this is where we have to be specific, if we are talking about a Free Trade Agreement, Congress Gets a say. Congress is responsive to many different Industry Groups within the us and has many Different Things it wants. One of them, for example, is agriculture. Agriculture, as we know, is something that has the possibility to be very controversial in the uk. I think we even saw with Boris Johnsons comment today that it is not going to happen overnight and it might take a little while but he knows this because there are certain he has to be careful about when talking about a trade agreement with the us, in that it might hurt his own potential future Electoral Prospects in the coming general election. Temperatures have now reached a new record for the Late August Bank Holiday weekend, the met office has announced. 32. 7 degrees celsius was recorded at Heathrow Airport earlier today. Forecasters expect temperatures to get even hotter on monday, with a possible temperature of 33 degrees in the south east of england. Already this summer, the uk has recorded its highest ever temperature, with the mercury hitting 38. 7 at cambridge injuly. 33. 3i 33. 3 i am told is the new record temperature. That has just been communicated with me in my left ear. Confirmed by the met office, i am told, which is 92 fahrenheit. Updates are constant here, i tell you. Now its time for a look at the weather with chris fawkes. There have been a few exceptions to the gloriously sunny weather we have seen across the uk today. Those exceptions across coastal areas of wales and parts of south west england, where we have seen a bit of cloud moving in from time to time. 0therwise, blue skies all the way, and that was the glorious scene earlier on and around the fort william, in the highlands of scotland. 0vernight, we will keep the clear skies, patchy cloud will develop across Western Areas and move into perhaps western scotland. A warm night for sleeping after such a warm day. Temperatures between 18 and 21 in the towns and cities. The countryside will be more comfortable. Tomorrow, we have a weak cold front bringing patchy cloud across england and scotland. There will be lower temperatures for these areas on monday. Into eastern wales and central and eastern england, that is where we will see the highest temperatures again, 33 are maybe 34 in the hottest spots. Good evening. Hello, this is bbc news with julian worricker. The headlines batting brilliance from ben stokes his sensational century leads england to a nailbiting victory over australia and keeps the ashes series alive. Borisjohnson says the chances of a brexit deal are touch and go ahead of his meeting with the Eu Council President at the g7 summit. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal, but i think they also. Do you think it is more likely than it was . It is going to be touch and go. President trump says a very big trade deal after brexit is on the menu as he holds a working breakfast with the Prime Minister. British airways has apologised after admitting it mistakenly told some passengers their flights were cancelled. And the huge street party begins more than a Million People are expected at Notting Hill Carnival this bank holiday weekend. Sport, and for a full round up from the bbc sport centre, heres 0lly foster. The last four days in leeds perhaps the greatest advert for test cricket. Ben stokes has kept the ashes series alive. His unbeaten 135 at headingley saw england beat australia by one wicket. Successfully chasing down a target of 359 for victory in a test is an england record, and it was all down to one man. Stokes was on two at the start of the fourth day, but as partners came and went, he was the constant. This brought up his century. His third against australia. With ten wickets down, stokes survived a plum lbw shout. This was after a flurry of its sixes. He was given not out, but australia had wasted their last review moments before, something they instantly regretted. He would have been out. With jack leach at the other end scoring just one run in their partnership, it was fitting that stokes wrapped up the victory with a boundary. England levelling the series at 1 1 with two to play. I dont think it quite has. I know we won the game, but i think, im a pretty tired to be honest. Just a great day. We came into this game this morning with a really good chance and it add to and flood when we lost a couple of quick wickets but it is never over until it is over. We were nine down and it was pretty obvious what needed to be done. We only really got a new look nervy when it got down to the tend to be honest because it was a bit what do i do hear . But i tried to go back to what i was doing before to get me there. I had my pitching wedge and just put the perfect distance today. It wasjust clearing the boundary across australian fielders in the deep. Keep an eye out for the tms podcast, that will be pretty special from the team. It goes to the bbc support website right now. There are highlights there. Former captain Alastair Cook called it the most extraordinary test innings ever played by an england batsman. Current captainjoe root called him a freak. Well, this was the reaction of fans leaving the ground. Yesterday morning to him but we did not think he would come to watch any cricket at all and is he that was ridiculous. We want more of that type of play and we want count cou nty type of play and we want count county cricket run and not the short form of the game. Lets get back to te st form of the game. Lets get back to test cricket. Unbelievable for ben stokes. He absolutely nailed it. The Sports Personality of the year. Apart from my son being born, that was the best day of my life. The atmosphere, you could feel it all day. Even when we kept losing wickets, and at the end, unbelievable. More reaction throughout the rest of the afternoon on bbc news. There are three matches in the premier league today, just the one result so far. The champions Manchester City had a fairly comfortable win on the south coast. Sergio aguero scored twice as they beat bournemouth 3 1. Joe lynskey reports. This is what happens when pep comes to town. They look up to him but hate to face him, especially at bournemouth. Eight top flight games with city and brought them eight defeats, just try to hold out can feel impossible. That was a Sergio Aguero finding the room for a shot to the corner. It was fortunate but right now for this team, even the miscues bring goals. City have strengthened even further this summer strengthened even further this summer but still they get more from those who have stuck around. With this, Raheem Sterling went to five goals in three games. 2 0 and the feeling that city has swept the team away. To drag themselves back in a come on the very best. Mary wilson isa come on the very best. Mary wilson is a Wells International on loan from liverpool. Moments like this help he growing reputation. That is quite brilliant and gave the home side momentum. But soon the champions grass to control again. They looked at the ar for this challenge but despite the contact, got no penalty. They were not waiting long for the goal two,. Sergio aguero again for one. His city goal number 235. They are the champions he remained relentless and for bournemouth, like so many, beating city is still a mystery. We have seven points. We should have nine. But it is ok. The game before the international break, and hopefully our fans can come against brighton and help us to make another victory. You know it is going to be a tough game andl you know it is going to be a tough game and i think the game we saw is the game he probably thought it might be. The big difference this time was although we did not have any moments of possession, we had out any moments of possession, we had our moments and chances to score. They ultimately change games and i think we just were not in front of goal today. Goals in both the other matches. Both into the second half. Joe linton has put newcastle in front at spurs. Wolves are losing at home to burnley. Ashley barnes. What a start of the season he is having. Its as you were in the scottish premiership. Celtic beat hearts 3 1 to maintain their 100 record and stay ahead of rangers, who also made it three wins out of three today. Borna barisic with the only goal at st mirrenjust before the hour mark. The croatian fired this stunner of a free kick on his return to the side. He has had three weeks out. St mirren have now lost their last four meetings with rangers. Adam gemili has won the mens 200m at the british championships. Came in second in the 100 yesterday. It took a new championship record of 20. 08 seconds into a headwind for gemili to beat zharnel hughes, who took the silver, and miguel francis, who won bronze. Its gemili and hughes who have qualified for the World Championships in doha next month after they both ran inside the qualifying time. There was drama at the start and finish of the british moto gp at silverstone, where spains alex rins claimed his second win of the season. Andrea dovizioso won last time out in austria, but the italians hopes of victory ended painfully at the first corner. His ducati team say he didnt break any bones, but was taken to hospital for further checks. World champion marc marquez looked on course to win, but was pipped on the line by fellow spaniard rins. Britains Cal Crutchlow was sixth. Englands women were playing for a bronze medal at the euro hockey championships in antwerp, but lost to spain. It was 1 1 at full time and went to a shoot out. At two goals apiece, Beatriz Perez scored her penalty, firing around maddie hinch. And then england captain Hollie Pearne Webb was thwarted by maria ruiz in the spanish goal, leaving england empty handed. We are disappointed obviously. I think disappointed with the whole tournament in general for us. Think disappointed with the whole tournament in generalfor us. But what was pleasing today was we played far better than we did in the last game. We changed a few things around. Yeah, a much better performance but we have a lot to work i when we get back home. Ireland matched their best finish at the euro championships, fifth overall. They beat russia 3 2. The irish only needed a draw to avoid relegation to the second tier, but won thanks to katie mullans late goal. Next year in tokyo, 4000 paralympic athletes will descend on the city for the 2020 games. 0rganisers are hoping the event will help change attitudes towards disability, as our correspondent nikki fox reports. 0ne one year to 0ne yearto go one year to go and it feels like a party. All this week, locals have been given the chance to try out some of the 22 sports that will be at the Paralympic Games in tokyo next year. A first time for many. Translation people with disabilities, ive never seen them play a sport before. Translation disabled or not disabled, it is important to raise awareness like today. In front of crowds today, german will record holder and paralympic gold medallist unofficially broke his own personal best, a distance that would have been good enough to win gold at the last three 0lympic been good enough to win gold at the last three olympic games. He thinks it is about time their 0lympians are viewed the same as 0lympians. |j it is about time their 0lympians are viewed the same as olympians. I want to show them that we are not like for athletes thatjust to show them that we are not like for athletes that just happen to do sports. We are High Performance athletes. Want to be rebutted for art results and our performance, not just for a disability. We focus too much on the disability and less on the ability. Japan hosted their first games 55 years ago. the ability. Japan hosted their first games 55 years ago. then, 378 athletes from 21 countries took part. Next year, more than 4000 athletes from 165 countries will attempt to win gold. And while the last games as a whole focused on improving infrastructure, next years paralympics improving infrastructure, next years pa ralympics is improving infrastructure, next years paralympics is set on changing attitudes. Translation there are many social barriers in japan. That translation there are many social barriers injapan. That is a big issue. For example, there are few access points, disabled and non disabled people say separately at school. We are divided. See you next year. What is the Main Objective that you want to get out of the games . It is kind of a changing society. And paralympic play, a very important blow to change japanese society. They are 0lympic to pigs are now on sale and i have been told that they are selling at an unprecedented rate. Good news for organisers who were hoping the messages getting through to the next generation will see disability in a different way. Thats all the sport for now. Quick reminder of our top story, england leveling the ashes series, beating austria by one wicket at headingley. Ben stokes, 135 not out, the hero. Much more on that across the hero. Much more on that across the rest of the afternoon and england but now it is time for the film review. Hello, and welcome to the film review on bbc news. To take us through this weeks cinema releases is mark kermode. So, mark, what do we have this week . We have a proper mixed bag. We have crawl, which promises to do for alligators whatjaws did for sharks. We have pain and glory, the Award Winning new film from Pedro Almodovar. And angel has fallen Gerard Butler is back. Right, some alligators to start with. We have had alligators in films like, i believe, lake placid . And there have been others. Alligator, eaten alive. I think technically lake placid was a giant crocodile. Alexandre aja is the director. The story is a swimmer from the university of florida goes back home and she finds out herfather is in his house in a hurricane zone and she cannot get in touch with him and she goes to the house to go and check that he is all right. When she gets there, everything is flooded and wouldnt you know it, there are huge alligators in the water. Here is a clip. Come on siren blares. Watch out that is no ordinary flood, is it . No, but you can see the jaws iness to it, or elements of it. Theres another one called bait, putting sharks in a supermarket. This basically does what it says on the tin. This film cost around 13 million, has already taken 65 million. Its a perfectly efficient, exploitive b movie creature feature in which it works partly because it has decent performances and you like the characters. The father Daughter Relationship works well and because partly there are no surprises, but that includes there is no surprising mistakes. Sometimes you can see the edge of production in the film a little bit, but it is done well. The director Alexandre Aja knows how to put this stuff together. There are a few laugh out loud lines. We are not going to be out smarted by these pea brained reptiles which reminds me of a line from snakes on a plane, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. It is a straightforward, unpretentious monster rampage movie. And it understands the parameters of what it can do, it is all set at the house, there is a basement, it does all the set up you can do and it does it all in a kind of snappy efficiency. Snappy, good. It will not win Pulitzer Prizes or 0scars, but it does exactly what it sets out to do. I looked at the cast list earlier and suspected that not all the people on the list survive, without wanting to spoil the ending. I would not spoil anything. Pedro almodovar, you mentioned a moment ago, and pain and glory. I thought this was terrific. I am a huge fan. This is a very personal semi autobiography. A filmmaker played by Antonio Banderas, racked with pain, both physical and metaphysical. He is at a moment of stasis in his life. There is a revival of a film he made 30 years ago with an actor he has not spoken to for 30 years, which forces them to get back together again. And whilst the present day plot is moving forward, he is cast back to memories of his childhood, memories of his mother washing clothes in a stream, memories of the time they lived in a cave dwelling. Memories of first going to the cinema and seeing movies projected against whitewashed walls. So the whole film sort of ebbs and flows with the tide. Its beautifully done, its very, very personal. There is a great performance by Penelope Cruz as the younger embodiment of the characters mother. Antonio banderas, ive never seen be quite so vulnerable. His face is this kind of mask of melancholia and regret and yet the childhood reminiscences are so vivid, so vibrant, these two things are living side by side. 0n the one hand, the ecstasy of his childhood memories. Funnily enough, they are very different film makers. There is a comparison here between the work of Pedro Almodovar and terrence davis. Terrence with his memories of the cinema and his mother singing. Clearly a very personal movie. Not strictly autobiographical. There are hints . There are hints of it. What he has done is he has taken the real story and fictionalised it and just taken elements. But there are some things you can see are absolutely personal, particularly the portrayal of the figure of his mother. But i thought it was terrific and i think Antonio Banderas should be up for an oscar nomination for his central performance. Thats definitely a commendation. 0k, onto angel has fallen. Where are you with the series . It was only earlier when somebody said the trilogy of the has fallen. 0lympus has fallen, which was the not good version of white house down. I hated london has fallen, in which theres a line, most of londons known landmarks have been destroyed. Well, what about the unknown landmarks . In this, Gerard Butler is back and he is framed for an attack on the president s life. Heres a clip. What is that . Are they bats . Distant ringing. Ringing approaches. Highpitched buzzing. Theyre drones, theyre drones on radio art come with me, sir get him under the ballistic hard cover, keep him down. Im on my way all yelling. Delta team engage, engage they scream. I didnt think that would end well. Heres the thing. I know this sounds like damning with faint praise. But i think this is the best of the has fallen series. For a number of reasons, because firstly again in much of the way of crawl, it understands its sensibility. Gerard butler was brilliant recently in vanishing, it has gotjust the right register here. A great performance by danny huston, who is chewing absolutely the scenery. Halfway through, nick nolte turns up as Gerard Butlers dad. And he is doing that nick nolte thing where, i am a vietnam veteran living off the grid, and i really enjoyed it. I didnt expect i was going to at all because i hated london has fallen. I went into this thinking are we getting more of the same . And i notice from the basic critical reviews that it has not been well received. But in the screening i was in, the minute nick nolte turned up, it became about the father and son thing, people started laughing, enjoying it and that laughter continued right the way through the end credits. Actually, of all the has fallen ones, this is the best. That is slightly damning with faint praise. No, i saw a lot of praise for nick nolte. He is great. He has almost become a caricature of nick nolte, there are whole lines of dialogue that are. Mumbles incoherently. And Gerard Butler says, you always say that right, moving on from your nick nolte impersonations. Lets talk about the best one out at the moment. Blinded by the light. Are you a Bruce Springsteen fan . Iam. Im not. I have nothing against him. This is based on a memoir of the scriptwriter. And its a story about a young man who connects with the music of Bruce Springsteen despite the fact that his life has nothing to do with Bruce Springsteens life. Its directed by gurinder chadha, who made bend it like beckham. It bursts into song like sunshine 0n leith did. So its almost like a musical. I thought it was charming. You can pick holes in it if you want to, but i thought it was really charming and it moved me and made me laugh, it made me cry. I just love the idea that music is universal. Somebody on the other side of the atlantic living a completely different life from you can write songs that mean so much to you in this particular in the world you live in. And even if you are not a Bruce Springsteen fan. Nothing against him. Born to run. Lets talk about the best dvd. Wild rose, which is this lovely film about a glaswegian single mum who is a country western singer and dreams of going to nashville. Titanic central performance byjesse buckley. Shes recorded a country album, shes fantastic. It has its feet on the ground, but its head in the stars. Again, it understands how music can transport you from one place to another. Gritty and realistic, but also romantic in its romantic view of the world. The idea that you can dream large and such a Great Central performance. I thought it was really good. Her singing voice is outstanding. Yeah, she can really sing, and i did an onstage interview with her and i asked if she would mind singing a song and she did and i said, fine, you are the real deal she can make it, but she can also act. I thought it was a really lovely film. Good stuff. Thank you, mark. Thats it for this week, though. Thanks for watching. Goodbye. Hello again. For the vast majority of us, today has been a sunny day. It has been very warm or hot. There have been a few exceptions. We have seen some thicker cloud at times, in west wales and also in south west england, where this weather watcher picture was taken from the isles of scilly. Well, there is the cloud you can see here on the satellite picture. Whereas the vast majority of the uk were just underneath these blue sunny skies. Just a bit of high cloud in the sky. So, that was the scene in scotland around fort william in the highlands. Glorious scene here with the high mountains in the background. Now, overnight tonight, were going to keep the clear weather for the most part. Although, again we will see a bit of patchy cloud reforming across some of our Western Areas of england, wales and western scotland as well. There will be another warm night for sleeping. Temperatures at 11pm still up at around 18 21 degrees. The countryside will be a bit cooler. Its quite a complicated jet stream we have for monday. Two cut off lows, they are forming to the west of the uk, which means its going to stay hotter for longer, across eastern parts of england. This one towards the south west approaches will eventually trigger some thunderstorms. I will tell you more about that in a moment. First of all, for monday, a weak cold front will bring this patchy cloud in across Western Areas of england, wales and across scotland. Temperatures will be a little bit lower than they have been on sunday. For example, in edinburgh, 21 celsius, generally we will see the temperatures into the low 20s here, but across east wales, central and eastern england, another hot day. Temperatures 33, maybe even 34 degrees in the very hottest parts. For tuesdays forecast, we start to see some changes. The weather front moves in off the atlantic, to bring some wet weather in across northern ireland. To the east of this, scotland, england and wales, a bit of patchy cloud, but some sunshine. The highest temperatures still across eastern areas of england, where we will continue to see temperatures running into the low 30s. But that little cut off low i showed you a few moments ago is this trough, and that will trigger some thundery showers as we go through tuesday evening and overnight. Its those thunderstorms that will bring variable amounts of rain. Some could get quite a bit, others not so much. But there is probably going to be quite a lot of lightning around. So it could be quite a spectacular night for some, tuesday night. Heading into wednesday, it is quite a mucky picture, really. Those storms clear out of the way. A weather front moves in off the atlantic, and thats going to be bringing significantly cooler fresher airfor many, even across eastern england, temperatures will begin to fall away. That is your weather. This is bbc news. Im julian worricker. The headlines at six.
