Degrees in west london. And coming up the travel show reviews some of its best trips this year. Thats in half an hour, here on bbc news. Good evening. Borisjohnson has told the bbc that whether the uk leaves the eu with a deal at the end of october is now touch and go. The Prime Minister was speaking at the g7 summit in france, where hes also said no deal would mean the uk keeping a substantial part of the £39 billion the uk had agreed to pay the eu. Hes also been meeting President Trump for the First Time Since becoming Prime Minister, as our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports from biarritz. Side by side, but not quite in step. Borisjohnson hopes his american friend will help him out and boost trade between their two countries. But is this a partnership of equals or will the uk get trampled all over by its mighty ally . Do you know who this is, hes going to be a fantastic Prime Minister. And we are going to do a fantastic deal. Once we clear up some of the obstacles in our path. Sitting down over breakfast, donald trump said britains departure from the eu would be liberating. Were having very good trade talks between the uk and ourselves. Were going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than weve ever had with the uk, and at some point they wont have the obstacle of. They wont have the anchor around their ankle, because that is what they have. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he said there were massive opportunities for british businesses. Well, the americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible, they really want results, you know, within a year, i suppose, by next june or july. Were keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thoroughgoing, comprehensive trade deal. You know that the experts say it cant be done in a year, it is going to take longer. Well, i think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. Ill be honest with you, my own experience of the way the americans work, and the size and complexity of the deal we want to do, probably means we wont be able to do it within a year. That doesnt mean. Five years . No, well do it faster than that. We need to do it fast, but to get the whole thing done within a year is going to be a big ask. Borisjohnson also met the president of the european council, putting behind them an argument over who would be to blame for a no deal brexit. I couldnt agree more thats the spirit. There was a time just a few weeks ago when mrjohnson said the chances of that were a million to one. So what does he think now . In the last few days, there has been a sort of dawning realisation in brussels and other european capitals that, you know, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. And i think everybody gets it by now. Its to do with that withdrawal agreement, its to do with the fact that under the current terms, wed be kept locked in the eu legal order, we would be kept locked in the trading system, without any say on those things. That cant work for a great economy and a great country like the uk. So, is no deal still a million to one . You said it repeatedly. It depends very much on the willingness to cooperate and the common sense of. Have you detected more willingness . Look, im an optimist, but i do think. Its going to take more than a bit of optimism. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal. So, it is more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going be touch and go. A no deal brexit wont affect everyone in this room but mrjohnson admits it could be bumpy for the uk. Can you guarantee to people they will be able to get their medicines . That is certainly a guarantee that we can make. But i dont want, at this stage, to say that, you know, there wont be unforeseen difficulties, because that is the. You said youre willing to contemplate it, you are willing to take the country in that direction, two months away, potentially, people watching this want to know what it is going to mean in real terms. Its entirely the right thing to do. So, the preparations that were making between now and october the 31st are under no circumstances going to be valueless, they need to be done anyway. Lets get them done fast and in a professional and confident way. Its been all smiles and warm words beside the sea here in the south west of france. But the Prime Minister has some testing weeks ahead. How did it go, Prime Minister . Tres bien. Vicki young, bbc news, biarritz. 0ur diplomatic correspondent, james landale, is in biarittz and he says the Prime Minister stood firm in his talks and pushed back against the us president. Any trade deal between the uk and the us after brexit is going to take some time. Borisjohnson was very clear it would take at least a year. His timeframe was more than a year, less than five years. Its going to take time and its going to be tough going. What was interesting today was that when the Prime Minister met the president made they had warm words, they showered each other with compliments, they are the new best friends, so to speak but what was really interesting was that the Prime Minister chose very specifically and publicly during the breakfast they had to push back against the president on two things. One was to say look, if theres going to be a trade deal, you, the us are going to have to open up orders and deregulate to allow british businesses to get in. He went through and named some of them. The president looks likely, you know, stimied. And also the Prime Minister made it very, very clear to the president that the uk does not support the us trade war with china because of the impact its having on britain and other economies around the world. That was really interesting. The Prime Minister, mrjohnson was beginning to calibrate his relationship with the us president. Its warm, its friendly but hes giving himself a little bit of cover so that if in a future election he were to be accused by his political opponents of cosying up to mr trump, too close, being dependent and needy, dare i say it, he has some defence and he says it is a carefully calibrated relationship. As talks at the g7 meeting in biarittz finish for the second day, the leaders met for a family photo with the leaders of the g7 nations, as well as guest invitees gathered for the photo call. Indias Prime Minister, Narendra Modi met with borisjohnson today, where downing street says the leaders agreed to further strengthen our Bilateral Partnership after brexit including by working more closely together to overcome barriers to trade and build on our economic ties. Brexit very much on the agenda for the uk Prime Minister at the g7. Irans foreign minister made an unexpected visit to the g7 summit amid diplomatic attempts by france to de escalate tensions in the gulf. Javad zarif met president macron and his french counterpart. He also briefed uk and german officials. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 30 and 11 30 this evening in the papers. 0ur guestsjoining me tonight are the political commentatorjo phillips, and the Political Editor of the sunday mirror and sunday people, nigel nelson. The back pages could be on the front pages, actually. Ben stokes led an extraordinary england comeback in the third ashes test against australia at headingley this afternoon, culminating in a dramatic one wicket win and keeping hopes of a series victory alive. Stokes was 135 not out, as andy swiss reports. Cut away what an innings, what a player. It was the stuff of sporting miracles, ben stokes the hero of headingley after one of the most remarkable victories cricket has surely ever seen. England had begun needing an unlikely 203 to win and stokes together withjonny bairstow had got the crowd starting to believe, but then the wickets tumbled and when stuart broad was the ninth man out, england still needed 73. All over, surely. But after being joined by last manjack leach, stokes unleashed something quite extraordinary, tearing into the australian bowling. And as he reached his century, the crowd sensed something special. 100 for ben stokes. What a summer hes having. Six followed six as the target ticked down. Stokes utterly inspired, it was spine tingling, spectacular drama as this took england within two. Six there was so nearly a late twist, a run out chance, but australia fumbled. Could you believe it . Moments later, stokes sent headingley into utter euphoria. Single handedly, single battedly, he dragged england to an astonishing win and as the celebrations continued inside the stadium, outside, the fans could barely believe it. That is one of those performances that goes down in history. Thats a we were there moment. So, ben stokes now. Sir ben stokes now. Brilliant innings. We said he had to Start Playing some shots, hitting it, well, he did that and then some, didnt he . Finest innings ive seen from an england batsman. Out of breath, like, just the adrenaline. The best kind of sporting moment. Brilliant atmosphere, good banter. Yeah, brilliant day. And for stokes, what a summer. A world cup winner and now an ashes hero. One of english crickets most extraordinary talents on one of its most extraordinary days. The cricket analyst simon hughes has been telling me he hadnt seen this coming. No, i mean, i think it was the most amazing performance. I think, you know, to try and put it into perspective, we mentioned ian botham in 1981 at headingley, that was an innings which resurrected england from following on and gave them the chance of victory, which bob willis sealed. This game, and this innings won the match. It was the last innings of the game and the percentage of runs that stokes scored with not only the last man, but with the last four men, when bairstow was out, england still needed 114 to win and stokes made 96 of those 114 runs, while three wickets fell at the other end. He had to farm a strike with the number 11, obviously not a very good player, so having to protect him and still score the runs as well. The australian bowling attack was outstanding, so i think its the best ever test innings ive ever seen and that compares with ian bothams 149 at headingley, and graham gooch who also made a brilliant 100 at headingley against the west indies. Brian lara making an incredible innings to win a match against australia for the west indies. This game, and this innings is, i think, better than all of them because of the way he constructed it. He batted very slowly to start with and really wore the bowlers down. But then gradually, having to completely expand and create a different repertoire, where he was playing reverse shots and switch hits and things like that, so he married test cricket batting with t20 batting and took england home and kept the ashes alive, so a remarkable performance. So to put this into context, looking at what people were saying on social media, they are, like you, comparing him to brian lara, to ian botham, calling for a knighthood. Do you think what we have seen today is worthy of that . Or should we wait a little bit longer to see how it pans out . I mean, ian botham was knighted not only for his contributions to the ashes, but also for his incredible work in charities for leukaemia research. But i think with stokes not only should we mention about the batting, but he also kept england in the game with the ball becausejofra archer went off with some kind of cramp on the second day and stokes took over his mantle and bowled Something Like 24 successive overs spread over two days from one end, kept his speed up of 88 miles an hour for most of that in very hot conditions and managed to wear the australian batting down so they didnt get a total that was too far out of range, and then saw england to their record ever run chase in the fourth innings. The fires raging across part of the amazon rainforest have been high on the agenda of the summit, where president macron said g7 leaders had agreedto help the countries affected as fast as possible. Most of the worst affected areas are in northern brazil, where our correspondent will grant has been on board a greenpeace plane to see the extent of the damage. This is environmental destruction at its most brutal. Swathes of forest reduced to a graveyard of blackened, charred remains. The flames rage unabated, fanned by the dry weather and wind. No one putting them out. The smoke at times reduces visibility to almost nothing. An acrid stench of burning hanging over the devastated landscape. Greenpeace flew over the state of rondonia to map the extent of the damage. And they blame one man for letting the situation get out of hand. Bolsonaro government is totally responsible for what has happened now because the numbers of deforestation are increasing since the beginning of the year. So in eight months, he has dismantled all Environmental Policies that it took more than ten years to build. Ignoring the politics for a moment, on an ecological level, on a human level, this is a very disturbing sight. Hectare after hectare of pristine amazon, the worlds lungs, going up in smoke, and worse still, it is taking place in a supposedly protected national park. But in brazil, you cant ignore the politics. All weekend, angry protests have been held in major brazilian cities and outside its embassies abroad, people furious at bolsonaros terrible environmental record. But the president remains unrepentant, accusing europe of a colonialist attitude and insisting brazil has the right to open up the amazon to development. Many believe the fires are especially bad this year thanks to his message. That subsistence farmers, cattlemen and major industry feel emboldened to set the forest alight. But there is some sympathy for Greater Development in the state of rondonia, where the president won over 70 of the vote. Translation im not against bringing International Companies here as long as they bring jobs. Edson is the owner of a lumber yard in the state. It is always been a challenge for brazilian governments to find a balance in the amazon but the president has opted to exploit it for mining and farming. With the dry season to get much worse by october, these fires may burn for many weeks yet. Will grant, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news. At the g7 summit borisjohnson says leaving the eu with a brexit deal is touch and go. Tonight, a show of unity from World Leaders after a days diplomacy in france. Batting brilliance from ben stokes leads england to a nailbiting victory over australia and keeps the ashes series alive. Sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres holly hamilton. I think we are running out of superlatives. Against all the odds. The ashes series is very much alive. In the chase of an england record 359 at headingley, the home side still needed 73 when ben stokes began a stunning solo assault. 135 not out to save the series. Lets hear from the man of the hour. Moments like that dont come along very often and you know, it was just an amazing game to be part of. To be there at the end and keep our ashes hopes alive was a pretty special period. Looking stunned. Well, looking a little more composed there but this was ben stokes immediately after that match, tweeted by his team mate stuart broad from the changing rooms. Broad says, not sure he can quite believe what hes just done. Neither can we lets step away from the ashes for the moment. Weve had a busy day in the premier league. The bigget shock came at tottenham where joelintons first half goal gave newcastle a 1 0 victory over a below par spurs and earned steve bruce his first win since taking over. Nick parrott was watching. After earning a draw at champions Manchester City, tottenham might have been rubbing their hands at the prospect of facing a team who had yet to secure a point. Sporting their away kit, newcastle looked more like the netherlands than the magpies and perhaps it changed their mindset too. They were the first to land a shot on target, with longstaff testing hugo lloris. And the first to make a breakthrough. Joelinton showing why newcastle broke their transfer record to sign the brazilian. Tottenham came from behind in their last two matches, but struggled to threaten here. Son heung min managing their only shot on target in the first half. And their only one in the second. If that did not sum up their day, this did var. It saved spurs last week against city, but here denied harry kane what looked like a penalty. The england captain had another chance to save the day, but it was not to be. Relief for newcastle boss steve bruce after a difficult start to his season and a lot for tottenham to work on before next weekends north london derby. Nick parrott, bbc news. We rode our luck a bit at times. Overall, i thought to a man they were excellent today. A big surprise on them and of course the staff who worked with me all week to try and quiet the storm, if that is the right word, but hopefully that should shut people up for a bit anyway. Elsewhere, two from Sergio Aguero and one from Raheem Sterling took Manchester City to a comfortable 3 1 victory over bournemouth. And in the final game of the day rauljimenezs stoppage time penalty salvaged a point for wolves to deny burnley victory at molineux. Its as you were in the scottish premiership.
