A cool day for all of us, a mix of sunshine and showers. Details coming up. Its sunday the 1st of september. Our top story English Schools rated as outstanding by ofsted will no longer be exempt from inspections, under new government plans. The department for education says that, as of last summer, almost 300 schools hadnt been assessed for more than a decade. It said the changes would give parents up to date information about their childs education and ensure standards remain high. Alexandra mackenzie reports. Its the beginning of a new school year. Time for the education secretary to unveil what he calls a raft of new measures for schools in england. High performing schools will receive funding to provide more support for ones that are struggling. Top rated schools will no longer be exempt from routine ofsted inpections. Some have not been inspected for a decade. And to turn around the most challenging schools, a new Specialist Academy trust is to be piloted. This will help those that have been underperforming for some time. This comes just after the pms announcement of millions of pounds of extra spending for primary and secondary schools in england over the next three years. The government says it will now focus on standards in education, and supporting the teaching staff. Labour says this is an embarrassing admission, but the education policies of successive tory governments have failed. And too many of its offered Solutions Just offer more of the same. Five people have been killed and many more injured after a mass shooting in the us state of texas. The suspect, a white male, was shot dead yesterday in a standoff with police. Andy moore has this report. Five killed, that is confirmed by the police chief. At first it was thought two gunmen were on the loose. Panic spread far and wide. People were evacuated from this shopping centre, including the presenter at the local tv station. There are people running through the mall, not sure why. Are we going to go back to programming . No, were going to leave and slip away, we dont know what is going on. As the gunman was finally cornered near a cinema complex, people were urged to take cover. Police said the gunman had started his shooting spree after a simple traffic stop. Several Police Officers were among the injured, and a child under two. He is a white male in his mid 30s. I dont have a positive identification on him yet. I have an idea who he is, but i wont release that information until we are absolutely positive. The Vice President said the white house was being fully briefed on the incident. The president and i and our administration remain absolutely determined to work with leaders of both parties and congress to take such steps that we can address and confront the scourge of mass atrocities in our country. There have been 140 victims of such mass atrocities so far this year. The same as in the whole of last year. The eus lead brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, says the uk has come to a moment of truth on how it will leave the european union. He again rejected Prime Minister borisjohnsons demand to remove the irish backstop, the policy intended to avoid a hard border on the island of ireland, and said he wasnt optimistic about avoiding a no deal scenario. Lets get more from our Political Correspondent susana mendonca. Michel barnier not quite as optimistic as some of the sounds we have heard coming out of downing street . Know, and Boris Johnson has been trying to put a positive spin on things, saying he feels that the eu is moving towards changing the keyissue eu is moving towards changing the key issue of the irish backstop, which is something borisjohnson doesnt want to have included in any deal with the eu, and he has talked about leaving with no deal on the sist about leaving with no deal on the 31st of october. Here we have the chief negotiator basically saying he is not going to remove the irish backstop, and essentially the irish backstop, and essentially the irish backstop within the offer the eu had given to britain, that was the maximum flexibility the eu could offer to a country outside of its club. He is also saying that he thinks a no deal brexit is probably a likely thing to happen. In terms of Boris Johnsons a likely thing to happen. In terms of borisjohnsons chances of trying to convince those conservative backbenchers to side with the opposition in terms of ringing in legislation that would force him to ask for an extension, this doesnt really help him, because those people are wanting to have some kind of conversation with the pm as to whether or not he has movement in those negotiations, and this would suggest that he hasnt. In this piece he has written the sunday telegraph, Michel Barnier talks about the two years of painstaking talks that have already gone on. If it is more likely to be no deal, both sides are preparing for it, no surprise we are having the launch of a major Advertising Campaign this week. This is the campaign we have heard a lot about. It is called get ready for brexit, run by michael gove, and it is an information source for people to find out more about what brexit might mean. It there has been so much reaction to there has been so much reaction to the plans to suspend the parliament, there will be more protest in the next few days, and parliamentarians will be trying to stop the pm from going down the road of no deal brexit. Events are taking place to mark 80 years since hitlers invasion of poland. Two days later, britain and france declared war on germany. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, willjoin more than a0 World Leaders at commemorations in warsaw today. Lets speak to our correspondent adam easton. I know commemorations have already begun, because they started at the point where the first bombing occurred. Thats right, we have had separate dawn commemorations, one in the first city that was attacked by germany, and the german president and the polish president met there. The polish president called it a war crime, and the german president said, in the polish language, that he vows to the victims of german tyranny and asks for forgiveness. The main ceremony we will be talking about earlier, where more than a0 leaders will be coming here behind me to warsaw in a few hours time, and there will be a military ceremonial changing of the guard, the laying of a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, and addresses from mike pence and the polish and german leaders. Then they will go for a dinner at the royal castle, and the evening well and with a performance of classical music, a polish requiem, which will be performed by polish musicians and sung by a german choir. A powerful storm threatening the bahamas and south eastern coast of the us has grown to category four, and is expected to strengthen even more. States of emergency have been declared across many of the regions at risk, including florida, where residents are preparing for when the storm hits land. President trump has described the incoming Hurricane Dorian as extremely dangerous. The hurricane is roaring in, it could be a big one. We are hoping that it may be makes a right and goes up north, but that is about a 5 chance, it is not looking good. And its one of the biggest hurricanes weve seen in a long time, a long time, so it could be very devastating. Donald trump talking about the impending arrival of Hurricane Dorian. As weve been hearing this morning, schools rated outstanding by ofsted can go years without being inspected. In may last year there were 300 which hadnt been assessed for more than a decade. The government wants that to change now, saying parents deserve more up to date information. Lets get more on this from head teacher simon kidwell. Is this the right thing to do . Absolutely. I teach at a Primary School in cheshire, and our neighbouring school hasnt had inspection since may 2007. Tony blair was still pm when some of these schools were last inspected. And that is because at the time it was graded as being outstanding, the government said ok, you dont need to be looked at to closely. Michael gove decided that outstanding schools were exempt from routine inspection. But we have some schools that have been inspected, special schools have been inspected, and Nursery Schools have been inspected, both every four years. So making sure those schools are inspected on a regular basis will be welcomed by head teachers. Not always by teachers themselves. Just picking up on some of the twitter response. And ofsted inspection is a weaks snapshot of a school at best. It would be best to scrap ofsted, as it damages schools and communities. At the moment it is the only resource we had to makejudgements on schools. They are moving to two days, inspections focus on the leadership of the school and they dontjudge individual lessons. We know there is extra funding for schools announced over the weekend, and it will be up to ofsted to fund these. What we dont want is an overworked inspection workforce where they havent got the money to do the inspections. We must make sure that that money doesnt come from the extra money announced for school budgets. If ofsted inspections have been slimmed down anyway, are they actually fit for purpose . I am also an advisor for cheshire west, and we see that most of the inspections give accurate judgements. However, ofsted only gives a snapshot, and we would like to see ofsted looking more at supporting schools, especially those that need support. There is an announcement today that there are a00 schools that are stuck, that havent been good for almost 12 yea rs. We havent been good for almost 12 years. We would like to see ofsted focusing on those schools and using their expertise to support them. Pa rt their expertise to support them. Part of the reason was that outstanding schools were taken out of the process was because they wa nted of the process was because they wanted to focus more on the schools that needed to be brought up and improved. Thats right, that was the thinking behind it but it has gone too long, and we have seen too many outstanding schools falling behind requirements or into special measures when they have been reinspected. It is the right thing to do but it needs more money, and the money shouldnt come from the pot that was announced on friday. The money shouldnt come from the pot that was announced on fridaylj know that some schools that fell in this category were reinspected because of specific issues, but in thoseissues because of specific issues, but in those issues 80 of them had their ratings downgraded, which is a significant proportion. That is probably expected because they would have been reinspected because of a drop in performance data or a serious parent complaint. That would be expected. But i would expect most outstanding schools to remain outstanding, because i know the ones near me that our outstanding, they are good schools. Everyone knows that a change in the staffing or the head can change things. How long can it take for a school to go from outstanding to struggling . months. Is at all . So people might look at a good school and buy a house nearby, and then find 12 months down the track they are not good anymore. Yes, parents should also talk to other parents, go and look at the school, meet the head teacher. It should be the key thing about using a school because an ofsted report is outdated the day after it is written. School performance data goes up and down, soi performance data goes up and down, so i would urge parents to look at a school before they choose it, and ta ke school before they choose it, and take the ofsted report with a pinch of salt, because distilling a school down to one number doesnt work. Of salt, because distilling a school down to one number doesnt worklj think a lot of people would agree with you on that. In terms of the extra funding announced over the weekend for schools, will that for you fill the funding gap that teachers have been telling us about for so many years . It would certainly go some way to addressing the funding gap we have had since introducing real time funding, and in my school we have had to reduce the number of teaching assistants we had. Government has consistently told us they have ring fenced funding around education, but arise in pupil numbers means. Yes, arising staffing costs. In terms of the new funding, it is welcome. It. Schools falling over, because we would have schools that are facing closure because of the funds. What we dont know yet is how much of that funding will be taken with increases in pay, so until we actually look at the detail we dont know the impact it will have, which is welcome, because we have been saying for a long time we need new money from the chancellor, and we have got it. Thats a great thing. Lets see how it works out back to school this week. Backtoschool this week. Back to school on tuesday. Have you got your new pencil case a method . School on tuesday. Have you got your new pencil case a method 7|j school on tuesday. Have you got your new pencil case a method . I have had may sue to dryclean. It is you to give up your last lie in on a sunday before school goes back. Thank you very much. Heres ben with a look at this mornings weather. We both have matching ties on this morning. It is most likely got the memo. I got the e mail. Fuchsia is definitely the colour of the day. I think we will be seeing more orange and brown, because we are getting into the autumn now. The first day of meteorological autumn. Were talking about going back to school. The weather feeling more autumnal. A beautiful start for some. That is how it looked in guernsey a short time ago. We will see some sunshine through today. Also some showers and it will feel very cool throughout the day. This band of cloud and rain workers were used with yesterday. Behind that we have single and flooding in. You can see these are speckled clouds on the satellite picture, charlotte clouds heading away on this north westerly wind, which is responsible forfeeding in the rather cool the ad shower clouds. This is how we start the day. Showers getting going across northern and western parts of scotland. This is the forecast. Eastern scotland perhaps not seeing many showers at this stage. Quite a fresh start of the day. Northern ireland seeing some showers, some getting down across Northern England into the north midlands, wales, the odd showerfor the into the north midlands, wales, the odd shower for the south west. Identical many showers through the day. To start off, east anglia and the south east are largely dry. Some areas of high cloud around. Much of that were clear and then spells of sunshine. Through the day showers through scotland into Northern England, north wales, into east anglia, some showers heavy and possibly thundery. Showers towards the south west. Remember last sunday when we got to 33 degrees . This sunday more like ia 2i at best. Late in the afternoon a band of cloud and showery rain across Northern Ireland extending into Northern England, parts of scotland through the night stop elsewhere most of the showers fade. Clear spells. It stop elsewhere most of the showers fade. Clearspells. It will stop elsewhere most of the showers fade. Clear spells. It will be the coolest note we will have had for quite some time. Five degrees in aberdeen. Maybe 18 cardiff and london. Some spots in the countryside could get down to 3 ad. A chilly start to monday. Things will be changing through the day. This frontal system approaching from the north west. That will tend to thicken up the cloud. After a sunny start it will generally dont cloudy across many parts of the country. Spots of drizzle for western parts of england and wales. General rain across Northern Ireland into scotland. Eastern scotland might well get some shelter and some sunshine through the day. Temperatures tomorrow, no great shakes, 16 21. It may start to feel a little milder as the date moves on. Briefly come through the rest of the week, it stays probably medically from mid week onwards, more north westerly winds at times. Some rain at times but not all the time, some dry weather as well. But yes, you two, it will feel like autumn. Thank you very much. It is the first of september after all. That also means the return of the Andrew Marr Show on bbc one. Back at your nine oclock slot. Andrew, what do you have on the Programme Today . The most extraordinary week in politics ahead. The future of this country will be decided in parliament in this coming week stop to try tojudge parliament in this coming week stop to try to judge what is going to happen i am joined by two people to understand this, the former black rod and former club to the house of commons to take us through what might happen in a few days ahead. Then i will be talking to keir starmer who is labours brexit supremo and has been plotting with the rebel alliance, so called, to try to stop no deal, and michael gove, the government minister in charge of no deal. All of that, as you say, at nine oclock. Laughter. Thanks very much indeed. Andrew marr at nine oclock. We will say goodbye to you shortly on bbc one for the repeated match of the day. We will be on the bbc news channel. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news, its time now for a look at the newspapers. Lets look at the front pages. The sunday times leads on its interview with the Prime Minister, who says conservative mps face an historic choice this week they can either back him to deliver brexit, orface chaos under the labour leaderjeremy corbyn. The sunday telegraph leads on comments by the eus chief negotiator Michel Barnier, who says the irish backstop will not be scrapped. The paper also reports that the Prime Minister is preparing for a showdown with tory rebels who are campaigning to block no deal. The main picture on the front of the sunday express is from yesterdays protests in london, as thousands turned out to campaign against the suspension of parliament. The paper says an election could be triggered within days if a no deal brexit is successfully stopped. And the observer reports on calls for a top level investigation into the Prime Ministers chief aide, dominic cummings, after he sacked one of the chancellors advisors. Cary cooper is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Lovely to see you. You too. Brexit everywhere. They will do a brief brexit and get on to other things. Amazing. I like the. This is and brexit. This is the wraparound on the sunday express. It is lovely. It is about 80 years ago when we told germany get out of poland or else there will be war, to the day, or less. It is actually september two. I like less. It is actually september two. Ilike thing. Less. It is actually september two. I like thing. And we are still into europe now. We are not militarily into europe, but then ex tory i will do is politically what we are doing. The next story. Isobel hardman did something in the observer where she talked about the weirdest brexit week that is about to hit us. Ive read this, too. I like anything that distills the complexity of the situation. Me too. Absolutely. She has set out various different scenarios. She has. The emergency debate, order 2a, that is to gain control for the people against a no deal to gain control of the parliamentary timetable. Trying to come up with some way of stopping it. That is one funny thing that will take place on tuesday. The second funny thing is the vote of no confidence, potentially, Jeremy Corbyns favoured approach and may an alternative government stop fun and games without one. Then the courts, a love that won two, the Scottish Court coming back on tuesday. We have gina miller and john major coming in on the english courts. One eye didnt understand was the humble address. One eye didnt understand. Dominic grieve, and Opposition Mps are drawing up a motion that would express unhappiness with parliament being prorogued, and appeal to the queen to stop the process. I did not know they had such a thing as the humble address. It is unlikely to work. Then you are getting the queen into politics. All these things feed into the idea that it is the establishment fighting against the will of the people, which owner was very much the narrative Boris Johnson was to press as well. For people fully in support of leaving the eu they will read this kind of stuff and think what happened to respect for democracy . This is your began. 80 years later, but politically. One criticism is that the queen has already been dragged into it. Absolutely. I think this raises all sorts of questions about the fact that we have an unwritten constitution. For me. That is a big issue. But it want to discuss it. Plenty of brexit around today. So lets talk about dementia. A quarter of us are wrong about the risk of dementia and think it is just a consequence of being old. L dementia and think it is just a consequence of being old. A big study was 70,000 people and three quarters of them think that, you know, this is ageing. It is not ageing. Because you can dramatically change dementia by living a healthy lifestyle, being cognitively active, a whole load of things. This is a big problem for us. By the year 2025 we will have 1 Million People suffering from it. It will cost Something Like £50 billion to deal with that is an issue. Do you know what, oddly enough, the recession and Everything Else, and the pension crisis, it means people will have to work later. Probably a good thing from a dementia point of view because you are maintaining social contacts and work, which is really important for you, and you are keeping cognitively active because you have no option. So was having more social relationships, making sure we do, why would give computers to everybody who is retired and train them on social media, frankly, so they can use it and keep in contact with their relatives. There isa contact with their relatives. There is a huge debate about the fact that our Health Service is built on the principle of treating people, but, actually, we should be rethinking that, preventative medicine, and personal responsibility, keeping ourselves healthy. They had an interesting thing the other day, which they should tell the Production Team about. Theres a story i think breakfast should do. A dental hygienist was telling me about a link between keeping your mouth healthy and your gums and flossing and Everything Else and alzheimers. Because there is some suggestion that there could be a connection with bacteria getting up nerves into your brain. Notjust that. If you are looking at yourself in terms of your teeth you will do so in terms of exercise and a range of other things. Really, we could stop the dementia, we can offset it. We will probably get it when we are 90, but we can offset it until then. Something quick and cheerful. We will skip a story and go to this one. Id love it. This is a French Producer making a tv film for French Television and what he says, im a real anglophile, i love britton, eye and partly english, 30 of ms english and Everything Else. Then he decided to make this film and he tried to find out about our funny little habits. He visits basildon, discovering the mysteries of the british pub, jelly deals, afternoon tea, et cetera, all that stuff. He says the food, people keep saying it has improved, but to be honest, jelly eels manages to be salty and tasteless, meat pies with luminous parsley sources, and cutting afternoon tea cakes into small bits and eating it, and marmite, he says, is no, no, no. You are and anglophile. By that you love and eal. Eye lived on a diet of cornish pastie s for two weeks. Eal. Eye lived on a diet of cornish pastie s for two weekslj eal. The suspect was shot and killed by police. No motive for the shootings has been established. Right now i will tell you that he is a white male in his mid 30s. I dont have a positive identification on him yet. I have an idea who he is so i wont release that information until we are absolutely positive. His comments come after thousands of people took to the streets across the uk yesterday to protest against the Prime Ministers decision to suspend parliament. Events are taking place to mark 80 years since hitlers invasion of poland. Two days later, britain and france declared war on germany. Ceremonies began in the early hours of this morning in the polish city of wielun, where the bombs first fell. The foreign secretary, dominic raab, willjoin more than a0 World Leaders at commemorations in warsaw today. Hong kong police have violently tackled suspected protesters after thousands marched in the city in defiance of a ban. Just a warning that some viewers may find the following images upsetting. Footage shows police hitting people with batons and using pepper spray on a train in hong kongs underground metro. It follows a weekend of unrest which has seen thousands of demonstrators marching in the city and defying a protest ban. Yesterday police used rubber bullets and water canons to try and disperse protesters. Several people were arrested. Time for sport, and we started some sad news that came late yesterday from the world of motorsport. Yes, another death that has shocked formula 1. His ferrari teammate, sebastian vettel, lines up alongside him, with championship leader Lewis Hamilton third. Liverpool go into the International Break with four wins out of four in the premier league after they beat burnley 3 0. Manchester city went one better with a a 0 thrashing of brighton. Chelsea and Manchester United could only draw though, as adam wild reports. Too soon to call the premier league a two horse race, but even in these early stages liverpool and Manchester City are just too good for the rest. They say in sport you make your own luck, liverpool were making just a little of burnley. Trent alexander arnolds cross somehow finding its way in. If that was fortunate, goals from sadio mane and Roberto Firmino were highly deserved. The success brings expectation sadio mane clearly angry at being substituted. But that drive for more is what drives liverpool forward. Hes an emotional guy were all emotional. Would he would do it exactly like this again . Probably not, but it is all ok, really. I like that, we saw these things in a second, but obviously not outside in the public. Everybody needs to calm down, everything is fine, and we still like each other. If liverpool like each other, Manchester City fans cannot help but like what they are seeing as well. It took them little over a minute to get things started against brighton. Manchester city have the lead on 71 seconds. Two goals from Sergio Aguero made the game safe. Four in total for city on a very comfortable afternoon. Things considerably less comfortable for their cross city rivals, Manchester United. Against southampton, things started brightly enough. This was danieljames showing once again why so much is expected from him. The lead wouldnt last jannik verstergaards first for southampton. A draw then, and for some clearly it felt rather more. Chelsea, another premier League Winner of the past now looking to the future. The youngest side in the modern era. And Tammy Abraham was justifying the faith in youth. This his second goal against sheffield united. But those from the steel city have within them an inner steel. One that saw them steal a point with an 89th minute equaliser. Chelsea have some growing to do. But the goal of the day perhaps came in leicesters win over bournemouth. Jamie vardy has done this kind of thing before. He never stops being spectacular. In scotland, its rangers celtic in the Old Firm Derby at lunchtime, but everyone else in the scottish premiership played yesterday. Motherwell put three goals past hibernian without reply. The opening effort from Sherwin Seedorf was the pick of the goals. Elsewhere, there were wins for aberdeen, livingston and kilmarnock. Hearts drew with hamilton. Its nowjust under three weeks until the Rugby World Cup gets underway in japan, and after a thrashing by england last weekend, ireland have been stepping up their preparations with a win over wales in cardiff. Jacob stockdale went over twice in the first half for the irish, helping them to a 22 17 victory. The two sides will meet again next weekend in dublin for a final world cup warm up game. Wales name their world cup squad later today. Scotland recorded their first away win in 1a months as they beat georgia in their last world cup warm up match before theirfinal squad is announced. Rory hutchinson scored two tries on his first test start in a comfortable aa 10 victory. Hull kingston rovers beat catalans dragons 2a 6 in perpignan to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from super league. With huddersfield beating hull on friday night, rovers needed to win to create a gap in the table from bottom side london, who play fellow strugglers leeds today. Tries from ryan shaw and one for Danny Mcguire settled the contest. Vasly lomachenko beat britains Luke Campbell at londons o2 arena on points to add wbc lightweight title to his wba and wbo belts. Lomachenko, whos regarded as one of the best pound for pound boxers, was made to work hard for the thrilling win though. Campbell was knocked down in the 11th round by the ukrainian, who won by a unanimous decision. Rafa nadal has powered through to the fourth round of the us open. The world number two was clinical in seeing off south koreas chung hyeon in straight sets yesterday evening. Nadal will now face either john isner or 201a champion marin cilic in the next round. Defending champion naomi osaka is also through, beating 15 year old coco gauff in straight sets 6 3, 6 0. Gauffs serving badly letting her down. And osaka showed her compassion in victory afterwards, with some consoling words for the emotional american teenager. So, as weve been reporting today, events are taking place to mark 80 years since hitlers invasion of poland. Its also eight decades since britain began evacuating 1. 5 Million People, most of them children, from cities to the countryside. Operation pied piper was the biggest and most concentrated Mass Movement of people in britains history. Hannah gray has been speaking to some of those wartime evacuees. When i had my first alcoholic drink at the age of ten, a glass of cider. Roger is 91. He has brought his granddaughter to the village he was evacuated to 80 years ago. Ten years old, nearly 11. Of course, iwas evacuated to the beautiful village of lamba hurst. Can you remember the date you got evacuated . Yes. Friday, the first of september, 1939. This building here was the former butcher shop, where i stayed for the first five months. Roger was one of 1. 5 Million People evacuated at the outbreak of world war ii. Its goodbye to the citys endangered areas, loaded up and not forgetting their gas masks, the children had for the special train. Theyre not worried, they are often a holiday. How are you feeling, were you afraid . No, it was great we loved it because the battle of britain was being fought over us. The skies full of vapour trails, planes coming down inflames, of vapour trails, planes coming down in flames, parachutists coming down. We thought it was quite exciting this was the kitchen, stone floor. Reg and mary remember vividly as well. We stayed in london through the blitz, and then we went to i think north devon then, and then my nan took seven children, because the youngest was a baby in arms. We were separated. I had a big tin of condensed milk, and chocolate, but i think that got eaten before we got to the station so, we got to the village and you see in front all these people standing there, getting picked out like prize cattle, we really did. The good looking ones. Me and another boy from paddington, who i havent seen since, we were the last two. We were told to go back to where we lived, that we were bomb dodgers. I knew a fellow from the club who ran away three times and they took him back. A word of advice for younger generations. Dont take everything for granted because you dont know if a war breaks out, and the next one will be, god knows. Ialways tell breaks out, and the next one will be, god knows. I always tell people, never die on be, god knows. I always tell people, neverdie ona be, god knows. I always tell people, never die on a monday, its pension day its a fascinating story, because not every childs experience was a happy one in that situation. We are going to speak to someone who was evacuated later. I knew of operation pied piper, i knew about the evacuation of the cities, but i never knew it was called that. I do now. A huge task. Heres ben with a look at this mornings weather. Often the return to school means the sun comes out. Its not quite like that, is it . No, it looks like the weather is following the script, because it is the first day of autumn as far as meteorologists are concerned, and the weather is turning quite a lot cooler. Thats not to say there will be no sunshine, there will be some blue sky at times, but also some showers. They could be pretty heavy and perhaps thundery as well. Yesterday we saw this band of cloud sweeping eastwards with some outbreaks of rain, and that has ushered in the cool air. Speckled clouds as well on the satellite picture. We are tapping into some much cooler air than we have been used to lately. A different feel to the weather. Having said that, most places starting with some spells of sunshine, but there are showers to be had as well. This is how its going to look if you are about to step out, this is about 9am. Showers in northern western scotland, some thundery ones developing through the day. Eastern scotland without too much at this stage. Northern ireland in Northern England with spells of sunshine. The odd shower across the southwest this morning. Not too many showers through the day, east anglia and the south east getting off to a dry start, quite cool and fresh wherever you are. As we go through the day you will see further showers across Northern Ireland, scotland, down into Northern England, north wales, east anglia and the midlands. Some dry spells in between, not as many showers in the south and west, but whereas last time we got showers with warmer temperatures, now up to 13 at best. This weather will put into scotland in Northern England through the night. The cloud expected to break up through the night and generally clear skies overnight. It will be a cooler night than we have been used to. Five degrees in aberdeen, 18 cardiff, some rural spots even than that. So it will be a chilly start if you are heading back to work tomorrow morning after a summer break. It will be largely dry to start off, but frontal systems pushing into the northwest will change things, so after a bright start, more and more cloud and drizzle for the western coast of england and, and for Northern Ireland and scotland some more general rain. Eastern scotland with some shelter, and perhaps some sunshine. Temperatures 1a 21, but it will start to feel a touch milder as the day wears on. Heading through the day wears on. Heading through the week, fairly mixed. Some rain, often windy, but you will notice the cool feel. The middle teens for edinburgh and belfast, down to the south may be up to around 20 degrees. So definitely cooler as we start of autumn. Thank you so much. Nothing as bad as the weather heading towards the east coast of the united states. It is thought 20 Million People could feel the force of Hurricane Dorian. A category a storm due to hit the bahamas and then the south eastern coast of the us later today. We spoke earlier to a warmer operating an Emergency Centre for her neighbourhood. We have the Community Emergency Operations Centre here in miami. We have been stockpiling supplies and helping Serve Community members to get all the items they need to be prepared for the storm. Right now we are just waiting to see what the storm is going to do. We did our tree speaking to over 2000 people in the community, i am checking on Senior Citizens and we are trying to be as resilient as possible. Some people have structures that are not safe. A lot of people were planning on evacuating. They are listening closely to see when the emergency showers will open, if they open at all. And, you know, a notice that a lot of people are not getting on the road to leave, maybe because the storm is so large and the whole state will probably be affect did, so state will probably be affect did, so there isnt anywhere to go. Why do believe a large amount of people will actually evacuate their homes to emergency shelter. I was in miami during hurricane andrew in 1992. Eye was a child, but we were out, lights, the water was contaminated about two or three weeks. Hurricane irma was extremely large and we did not even get the eye of the storm in miami and were without later about a week. We fear the are getting stronger and dorian seems it will be stronger and dorian seems it will be stronger than oma was. Everyone is taking it very seriously. The news has been shifting back and forth, saying the trajectory is changing all the time irma. Saying the trajectory is changing allthe time irma. People are still in the state of emergency and they are remaining prepared. She was speaking to us a little earlier on brea kfast speaking to us a little earlier on breakfast from miami. Now its time for the travel show with Christa Larwood. Hello and welcome to the travel show, coming to you this week from bonny scotland, where we will be discovering some of this regions distinctive dwellings stretching back to the neolithic age. We are starting this week here in the outer hebrides, or western isles, a group of islands off the extreme north west coast of scotland. Known for their rugged beauty and wildlife, its also where youll find these. They are called crannogs, and they mightjust seem like random, small, overgrown islands, but they were once ancient man made loch dwellings during the iron age. Or they could be even older than we think. Newly found artefacts now date them back even further to the neolithic age, around 5,000 years ago. And i am with the man who found them all right here at this beautiful loch. Yeah, just over there on that island, on the west side of that island, right on the side of it, thats where i found the neolithic material. 15 feet off there. Well, in the early days, when i was here crewing the coastguard helicopter here, i noticed quite a number of lochs with little islets on them. They didnt look natural at all. They looked like they were just too round. Some had walls round them and i thought, well, i wonder what was going on in these lochs many, many years ago . So tell me, what did you find in this loch and other lochs around here . What i did find was beautifully decorated ceramics under the water here. But i think the more specific find i did make, on the bottom of this loch around the island here, near the island, was an almost complete bowl. My archaeologist friend, mark elliott, i gave him a phone call and he came down to have a look at the stuff. And he took his glasses off, put them back on again and he said, where did you find this stuff . I said, i found it in the loch here, and he said we dont find that stuff here. I said, well, i didnt put it there. He says, you dont know what you found here, boy. This is early neolithic. Its not supposed to be here. All these islets and islands over only go back to the iron age. Change in the history of scotland. Thats quite some feat for a bowl. I think for a bowl alright, yes, it certainly was, aye. Can anyone come out here and started rummaging around under the water there to find some amazing relics . No, before i go to any loch, what i do initially is seek permission from the state or from the trust or from anybody that owns this area. I get permission before i start, before i stick my head into the water. Chriss finds make some of these crannogs older than egypts pyramids. He is now working closely with archaeologists from england to see what other secrets they can unearth. While the crannogs in the outer hebrides are certainly some of the oldest, hundreds of these stone islands are scattered across scotland, forgotten and overgrown in its lochs. Im headed back over to the mainland to the Scottish Crannog centre in the highlands. Im keen to find outjust how they were used thousands of years ago. The timing is pretty great because we are in the middle of an iron age festival. Folk music plays. So this is a bone whistle, that is one of the earliest Musical Instruments in human history. And im going to give it a go. Whistle toots. 0h, 0k whistle toots. And this is what some of the crannog would have looked like. Wow, look at this hello there hello, welcome welcome to the crannog. Welcome to the crannog, yes. This is much bigger than i thought it would be. Its very spacious, its like a tardis, isnt it . Small on the outside and you come in and. We have always been wowed by that illusion. Its both large but very cosy. You have essential hearth and a domestic seated area for everybody to sit around, to eat their meals at the end of the day. Behind you we have a little pen for putting the animals in over the winter, we think. And weve got whats here . Well, basically, youve got an upper level here for sleeping in. If youve got about 20 people to get into the crannog and sleep at night, then some of them may well have to sleep on these upper levels. The festival around the reconstructed crannog helps give a sense of what it might have been like. With people teaching traditional crafts and life skills, essential to iron age living. The plan is to make butter out of this cream using only my bare hand. Ill see how i go. Its quite cold. Who needs a whisk . That, my friends, is butter made with my bare hand. Ill give it a little go. Its definitely butter. Ooh, yes nice fresh butter i will never buy butter again. And apparently they use coracles, yes, that round thing made of animal skin to navigate the lochs and waterways. Ooh, its cold what do you think top speed is for the really accomplished coracle paddler . Not much quicker than i am going right now, ill be frank with you. So, how old would this kind of structure have been . So this one is we dated it to 500bc. This kind of thing because this is recent. How much effort and time would Something Like that have taken to build . It took us three years to build this crannog, we think for them 10 months at the very most. Yes, in this building, weve got over 700 trees together, whereas compared to a round house on the land, you are looking at about 75 trees. So why did they go to all this effort to build something out on the water . Its a good question and theres a simple archaeological answer, is that we dont really know. But thats whats brilliant about the prehistory. Realistically, we think there are three main reasons. Its a secure structure, it is out on the water with a walkway going on, you have a one way on, you have one way off. The other way you can look at it is with it being on the water, trade would play a role with this. Youre out for everyone to see for miles around. On top of that as well, what you might be looking at is, arguably, status. I mean, why go through all the time and effort . It could just be to show off. And true to scottish weather, it has started to rain. So what better way to stay dry than gathering back inside the crannog, listening to folksongs, similar to the ones that might have been sung during the iron age or even the neolithic age, over 5,000 years ago. To end this week we are off to the argentine capital of buenos aires. In recent years it has become known as one of south americas most lgbt friendly and open minded cities. But its biggest cultural export, tango, is not exactly known as the most inclusive of dances. Despite the fact that in its early days men often danced the tango together, mainly because of a lack of available female partners. Tango music. Tango is part of our identity as argentinians. And maybe also of the men and women image, it is also very connected with our culture. Tango is very machista. Tango is part of our identity as argentinians. And maybe also of the men and women image, it is also very connected with our culture. Tango is very machista. The only way to dance tango was with a man, and only men could ask women to dance. The idea of queer tango was something very strong when we proposed it, because it was something against our culture, like breaking the rules. Tango music. We already achieve many things, but what still is a challenge is the possibility for the queer people, for the gay and lesbians or trans people to dance, be comfortable and freely in the traditional milongas. Thats all we have time for on this weeks programme, but coming up next week lucy is in switzerland, taking part in a Wine Festival that only happens once every 25 years. And getting into a flap in the process. The sun is blazing, its so hot, im melting. Totally worth it look at this atmosphere and in the meantime, dont forget you can catch up with us while were out on the road in real time by checking out our social media feeds, and sharing your travels with us and the rest of the world. Until next time, from me, Christa Larwood and the rest of the travel show team here in scotland, its goodbye. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with rogerjohnson and rachel burden.
