We have a lot more on our website and you can also download the bbc news app. But now lets head to singapore and join rico his own for the Asia Business report. To the right, 328, to the left, 321. Ano to the right, 328, to the left, 321. A no deal exit opponents defeat the government and the pound gains on the news. Ahead of the stock market debut of wework we speak to their indian boss. Good morning, asia hello, world. Is wednesday, thank you forjoining us for another exciting addition of Asia Business report. Lets begin with brexit because borisjohnson has suffered a major defeat in parliament with tory rebels and Opposition Mps defeating the government, the first stage of their attempt to pass a law designed to prevent a no deal brexit. After falling to a three year low, the pound posted a brief rise against the dollar on the news. Our Political Correspondent told us what happens next. Tomorrow there will be a debate and a vote in the house of commons on a law that the Opposition Mps and some conservatives in Boris Johnsons own party trying to get past. And what that does is force the Prime Minister to ask the eu for an extension to the Brexit Process if he cannot reach a new deal. The date would be january 31 and the idea is that if there is no new deal by the middle of october, the Prime Minister would then have to go to bustle russells and say we need more time. What those mps want to do is rule out, block, prevented any cost the uk leaving the eu without adl. This is against what the government wants to do because Boris Johnson has said time and time again that he would be happy for the uk to leave the eu without adl at the end of over but if he cannot reach a new agreement with the eu. And that is why Opposition Mps needed to take control of what happens in parliament away from the government to try and get the legislation through. Tomorrow, a debate, a vote on that followed by, we expect, a vote on whether to hold an earlier general election because that is the Prime Minister s attempt to get out of the bind that he may be forced into by mps because having said he would never ask for an extension to the Brexit Process, he argues that if mps are trying to force him to do that, the only way out of it is to ask for a general election and people to decide who they actually wa nt people to decide who they actually want in government. Before the vote, the trade agency of the United Nations warned that leaving without a deal would cost britain the least 16 billion us dollars in lost eu sales. And the uncertainty created is not going unnoticed by currency traders. Pound fell below one dollar 20, its lowest level since 2016. And as you can see on this currency trial chart, the pound was trading at 1 50 before the Eu Referendum injune 2016. So it has lost nearly 20 of its value since then. A few weeks ago, the office for National Statistics said that the uk s economy shrank by zero point 2 between april and june and that is the first contraction since 2012. And uncertainty over the future trading relationship is starting to affect uk businesses many adopt a wait and see approach. Motors and traders say investment in the car industry is down by almost 75 to just 108 million in the First Six Months of the year. Brexit well, of course, continue affecting Market Sentiment and overnight the us markets have returned from their Holiday Weekend and stocks fell on the lingering trade war concerns between the us and china. Earlier i asked Peter Mcguire his views on the pound. What we have seen isjust a whip soaring over the last matter of days and a heavy sell off. We have Centre Bounce up. The uncertainty leading forward will cause again continued volatility for traders and the uncertain long term player for borisjohnson the uncertain long term player for Boris Johnson and his the uncertain long term player for borisjohnson and his government. So much concern at the moment from the pound value. There are basically in two risks for the pound against the us dollar going forward. What are the positives and negatives that could put the pound up or down against the greenback . It will be whetherjeremy corbyn calls an election and the other side play into it, at least thats what Boris Johnson needs. There is that and i think that will cause uncertainty over the next few trading sessions. And if there is an election called then i think that you could see the pound rally a little bit to the upside. Again, there are so many moving parts with this it could be a day by day proposition. Investors are quite confused about the day to day developments here. You have brexit, the us china trade war, wea k have brexit, the us china trade war, weak us economic data. What would your advice be at the moment for investors navigating this complicated landscape . We are seeing a flight to safety in the sense of golden swiss franc and gold primarily has had a nice rally overnight in new york. A nice push up there for the best part of 15 or 18. So i think you will see a flight 15 or 18. So i think you will see a flight for safety and that is not unheard of in these times. So possibly stronger gold and a flight to us dollar itself. That was Peter Mcguire in sydney. Other business news, walmart says it. Selling some types of ammunition, following Mass Shootings including one that happened inside a texan walmart. Also, if you just looked at india from its history has always been an extremely communal country. That is why i think wework has caught on well because it was something that did not meet need to be forced on the population.
