Amid all that, us media have reported that the target was Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi and that he was killed. If that is confirmed, it will amount a significant blow to the ah Islamic State group. Sad to see wales go out, but they had an incredible tournament, havent they . They will be pleased to have reached this far, but welsh fa ns to have reached this far, but welsh fans really did feel this would be the year they would go all the way to the finalfor the year they would go all the way to the final for the first time, and this presented their best opportunity to date to lift the trophy. They are six nations grand slam champions. Warren gatland is in charge of this, his last tournament, so charge of this, his last tournament, so there was a lot of sentimentality around that, and the players were determined to try and give him the sendoff he deserved after 12 years in charge in which he has won back the six nations on four occasions, the six nations on four occasions, the grand slam three times. They have built an impressive squad. They have built an impressive squad. They have been depleted through injuries. In the build up to this game, they lost two key men. They gotjonathan davies fit, but in the first half, they lost Thomas Francis and george north, so the odds were stacked against them. It is a measure of the level of character and resolve that wales have developed that they hung in there. Even when they conceded a try early in the second half, they came back. They were camped on the south african line for several minutes, phase after phase go forward play, then they flung it wide, george adam scored, and lee halfpenny, who had been brought in at full back, brought them level at 1616. At that at full back, brought them level at 16 16. At that point, it looked as if wales could dig deep, as they did in the semifinal, when they were nowhere near their best but managed to find a way to beat france and prevail. Pollard for south africa scored his fourth penalty and snatch victory, 19 16. South africa will hope to beat england and win a third world cup. Welsh hopes of a first world cup. Welsh hopes of a first world cup. Welsh hopes of a first World Cup Final are dashed again, and it will be a bitter pill to swallow for them. The government has dismissed an attempt from the liberal democrats and the Scottish National party to trigger a ninth of december election as a gimmick. Conservative Party Chairman James Cleverly said they were not going to listen to two parties who explicitly said they wanted to stop brexit from happening. 0ur Political Correspondent tom barton explained how the lib dem snp proposal differed from the governments plan for an election three days later. If a snap election like the one borisjohnson wants is to be held, in normal circumstances, you need a two thirds majority in parliament. That cant happen without labours support. This proposal would see the parties changing the law to set the election date. That only needs half of the mps and so could happen without labour. Just in the last hour or so, jo swinson, the leader of the lib dems, has been setting out how the proposals would work. I havent spoken to borisjohnson, but i think the challenge is absolutely on him. Because if he is serious about wanting an election, and if he is genuine that its about having an election before christmas, then he can back this bill. Because the other problem with his plan is that it leaves the ability to set the date of the election down to the prime minister. He says the 12th of december, but, i mean, this is a man who is prepared to say anything. He doesnt do what he says. The advantage of this bill is that it enshrines the date in the law, and we know that ultimately when push comes to shove, he has been forced to obey the law. Whether that was on recalling parliament, or whether that was on sending that letter to request the extension. So what then do the other parties make of it . The conservatives today have described the idea as a stunt and say that they are concerned because it could potentially be amended in the commons to change things like the voting age, which has been a priority of the lib dems. They say that their proposal for an election, the one outlined by borisjohnson last week, is the best way to deliver it. We have put forward the proposals for an election. The lib dems and the snp are seeking, in their bill, they are seeking to change the date by three days and take. So what . What is the significance of a few days . And make no attempt to even pursue the Withdrawal Agreement bill. We have been clear, we want to leave the European Union in good order. That is what we have always said. And we want a general election. 0urs does both, theirs does not do both. So that is the conservatives, as for the labour party, they are keeping their council for now. As i say, they have blown hot and cold depending on who you talk to, as to whether they do want an election. Diane abbott today telling andrew marr that their priority for now is making sure that no deal is definitely off the table. Well, he could come to parliament and categorically give parliament an undertaking that he is not going to come out without a deal. But he wont do that, because coming out without a deal is something that people like Dominic Cummings would want, because then it becomes notjust brexit, but a trump brexit. Opening up the british economy to american multinationals. But if he were to come to parliament and unequivocally say that he is not going to crash out without a deal, we would be satisfied with that. So that is labours diane abbott. What are we expecting in the week ahead at westminster . Well, everything now hangs on what the eu decide. We heard from them just at the end of last week that they would agree an extension. We dont know though how long that would be for. And as we have just seen, the date of that extension is absolutely key. If Emmanuel Macron gets his way, we understand he wants an extension to a couple of weeks into november. Well, all bets are off, anything could happen. If though parliaments wish for an extension to the end of january is granted, then i think it is starting to look more likely than not that we will see an election before the end of the year. But at the moment in politics, who knows . Anything could happen. The archbishop of canterbury has warned borisjohnson to avoid using inflammatory language as the country prepares for a possible general election. In an interview with the sunday times, justin welby says its extraordinarily dangerous for politicians to use careless comments in a society that is now polarised and volatile. The headlines on bbc news the us military has conducted an operation against the fugitive leader of the so called Islamic State group. Vigils are held in vietnam by families who fear their loved ones are among the 39 people found dead in a lorry in essex. The liberal democrats and the Scottish National party have joined forces to offer borisjohnson the chance of a 9th of december election. Sport and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres 0llie foster. The final in the Rugby World Cup will be between south africa and england. Wales lost their semifinal to the springboks not too long ago in yokohama. Warren gatland said he is proud of his team but they gave away too many penalties. It was the battle of the boot in the first half, but the match burst into life the break. Josh adams converted a try, levelling the scores at 16, all with 20 minutes to play. But south africa won a late penalty, which Handre Pollard took for the victory. South africa, the two time winners, celebrated their progrees to a third World Cup Final, their first since they beat england in the tournament in france 12 years ago. Liverpool look to reclaim their lead at the top of the table when they face tottenham at anfield this afternoon. Spurs may have turned the corner with a big win in europe during the week. They are two really good teams at the situation around will not make a massive difference. We will not be so confident that nothing can happen to us, and i dont even know how many points they have. They are a top side and they will be a top side the whole season and we have to respect that and play the best football we can play against them. We are improving in the areas where we need to improve. After five and a half years, always, our plan is us. We need to care about the details of the opponent, but the most important is how we are going to play. Newcastle, only out of the bottom three on goal difference, take on wolves later. Today is the anniversary of the death of leicester citys former chairman vichai srivaddhanaprabha. The club has paid tribute to the thai businessman who was central to their Incredible Premier League title win in 2016. The wounds are still there, definitely. Obviously, it has been a year, but the boss is constantly on our minds still. Every time we go onto the field, we think about him. We want to do him proud. We know what he wants from the club and the players, and our success, so we want to do him proud, and every time we go out there, we try and win. Its neck and neck at the top of the scottish premiership. Celtic are at aberdeen, and rangers are at home to motherwell. Both glasgow teams have 22 points and an identical goal difference at the top of the table. Thats all for now. More reaction to the welsh defeat in the Rugby World Cup semifinals to the springboks. And build up to the formula 1 grand prix in mexico city, where Lewis Hamilton could become World Champion for a sixth time. Difficult maths against him. He has got to get 1a more points than his team mate phil terry but us, which will be tough. Lets return to our top story, and that military operation conducted against the leader of the so called Islamic State group. For more now, im joined by bbcs middle east correspondent, tom bateman, who is on the turkey syria border. We have been getting more reports from American Media in washington, more details about the number of bodies recovered from the sight of that attack by us and other forces, which was targeting Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi. Which was targeting abu bakr albaghdadi. We know for certain that there was a very dramatic military operation very close to the Turkish Border in the north of idlib province. The bbc has spoken to one resident in a village who said he heard helicopter gunships above his home. He said the downdraught was so strong he could feel it in his house as he and his children cowered in the basement. The helicopter targeted two homes in the village, one of which was completely flattened. It is clear that casualties resulted from that. The uk wore Monitoring Group says that nine people were killed. As you say, us media in the last hour or so are claiming that they have confirmation from us officials, unnamed at this stage, that Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was killed, but also that he was identified by use of biometric data. They were immediately able to identify him according to us media. There is no independent confirmation that either Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi was targeted or indeed killed. We do expect that statement, described as a major statement, from the white house, from President Trump, in the next hour. If it turns out that Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi has been killed, what would be the significance of that . We know he was the leader of Islamic State, but to what extent was he really in day to day control of its operations . I think there are two points. 0ne of its operations . I think there are two points. One is a military point, and certainly Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, who became the leader of Islamic State since its inception in its current form, was instrumental in the way in which he was able to recruit the remnants of alqaeda fighters that declared the caliphate. Huge swathes of Northern Iraq and syria were under Islamic State control. That is one thing, but his territory has been all but com pletely but his territory has been all but completely eliminated, the last strongholds falling to kurdish fighters and an International Multi Country Coalition earlier this year. The other point is about the propaganda value, the ideological figurehead in the leader of Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, and that was the way in which he was able to inspire people, some who had no physical connection to other Islamic State members, to carry out atrocities around the world and not just carry out atrocities around the world and notjust in the middle east. It may be that the ability to inspire is dented, and it is a significant propaganda below. The dynamics in syria have been shifting rapidly over the last year, and that is the key to how it is able to operate on the ground there. John, for the moment, tom, for the moment, thank you very much. Riot police in hong kong have clashed again with protesters. Police have fired tear gas and pepper spray to try to break up the thousands of Anti Government protesters gathered illegally at the kowloon waterfront. Its the latest in a series of sometimes violent confrontations, in whats now been over more than four months of unrest. And there have been more clashes between police and protesters in barcelona, following the jailing of catalan dissident leaders. Some of the 350,000 demonstrators threw bottles and fireworks at police, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. Nine separatist politicians and activists were jailed earlier this month by spains supreme court. An early renaissance painting by the italian painter cimabue will go up for auction today, just weeks after the work was found hanging in an elderly womans home near paris. Christ mocked, part of a series of paintings from the late 13th century, has been valued at between four and six million euros, in what could be frances biggest art sale of the year. Eric turquin is an old master expert who studied and valued the painting i spoke to him a little earlier and he explained how the piece was discovered. This picture was found in the clearing of a house. An old lady was leaving a house she had sold and she asked the local auctioneer to empty the house. As she is a good auctioneer, she thought, this looks not like an icon but like something else, and she brought the picture to us. That is an incredible story. Tell us more about the painting and its place in the history of art. How special is it . Extremely special. This is probably one of the First Western paintings. Cimabue is a transformer, somebody who, starting from the greek world, the icons, did something much more human. What is remarkable in this picture is not the gold ground, a symbol eternity, it is the very simplified perspective, before the creation of prospective 200 years later. But what cimabue is bringing is humanity in these faces. All these aggressive figures around christ, with real expression. The expression of christ himself in the centre, who is outside the crowd, is just abandoning himself. A magnificent gesture of abandonment. These figures on the left and right are protecting him. One is opening his arms to protect him from the crowd. The other one is putting his hand over his head to protect christ against the sword that is hitting him. It is a very touching picture. We are used to this, but in 1280, this was totally new. This is a real breakthrough in the art of painting. He is bringing humanity, and thats really new. It must be incredibly exciting for you to be so close to it. How much do you think it will sell for . It is obviously an incredibly exciting work of art. What sort of price do you think it might fetch . One of my english colleagues in 2000 discovered the other half of the picture, which was on the same plank and is now in the National Gallery in london. It sold for £6 million in 2001. We have put a rather low estimate of 4 6 million euros. We have enormous hopes for this picture. We showed it to the greatest museums in the world, the greatest collectors, even a contemporary art gallery has registered to bid this afternoon. I think we will get a huge price, which is good news for our market, good news for all the antique dealers, the experts, our colleagues who are looking for pictures. Everything is possible. And thats great. Would you rather it was just on display in a museum rather than sold to a private collector who mightjust keep it in a house somewhere locked up . It would be great if it would be in a great museum, joining one or two other ones. That would be fantastic. Celebrations will take place later to commemorate the introduction of a climbing ban on australias ancient site, uluru. The site, formerly known as ayres rock, is considered sacred to its indigenous custodians, the anangu people, who have called for an end to climbing the stone since they took back ownership more than 30 years ago. This weekend has seen huge crowds descend on the area for the final time. Window cleaners in canada had a lucky escape after strong winds forced their platform to swing violently out of control. The cleaners were working on the stantec tower in edmonton when the platform they were on, which was suspended by a crane, swung away from the building. It then crashed into windows on the fifth story several times and one of the workers was left hanging by their harness in mid air
