Ill have more in 15 minutes. Its monday, 18th november. Our top story Prince Andrew is facing calls to apologise to the victims ofJeffrey Epstein for his Close Association with the convicted sex offender. A lawyer who represented epsteins alleged victims has told breakfast that the duke showed an astonishing lack of empathy in his bbc interview at the weekend. Jeffrey epstein took his own life while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Heres andy moore. Your royal highness, weve come to Buckingham Palace. Its hard to find anyone who thinks the interview was its hard to find anyone who thinks the interview was a its hard to find anyone who thinks the interview was a success. Its hard to find anyone who thinks the interview was a success. Him being friendly with a convicted sex offender, going on television, the first words out of his mouth should be im sorry, and if there is anything i can do to assist these victims in any way, shape or form, i would want to do that. But todays daily mail claims that andrew has expressed sympathy in private that he didnt state in public. The son ta kes a he didnt state in public. The son takes a different line, claiming the prince had told the queen his interview had been a great success. Whatever the angle, the interview continues to dominate the headlines. There is also analysis of andrews admission he had met epsteins girlfriend this year even though she had been accused of helping epstein groom his victims. If there are questions she has to answer, thats her problem, im afraid. Im not in a position to be able to comment one way or the other. When was your last contact with her . It was earlier this year, finally enough, in the spring of summer. About what . She was here doing some running. Ghislaine maxwell has always denied the allegations against her. This was her, six years ago. Elusive then, she hasnt been seen in public for many months and no one seems to know where she is now. Andy moore, bbc news. Andys outside Buckingham Palace for us this morning. Andy this storys not going away is it . No. This story certainly hasnt gone away and there are growing calls that friends and you should give evidence to the fbi under oath in america. We saw that report, spencer given, who represents three women. He said Prince Andrew showed no empathy for potentially hundreds of victims. Even though epstein was dead there was an Ongoing Investigation into his Co Conspirators. He didnt say who they were, but he hoped prosecutions would follow. Another interesting development, there has been speculation about whether the queen gave permission for this interview to go ahead. Emily maitlis, who conducted the interview, said that Prince Andrew said he could go ahead with the interview if it was signed off by somebody higher up. Obviously it wasnt Emily Maitlis was under permission that the impression that permission was given by the queen herself. Thank you very much indeed. Live from outside Buckingham Palace. Borisjohnson, Jeremy Corbyn and jo swinson will each address Business Leaders later as they hope to win support ahead of the forthcoming general election. What are we now . 3. 5 weeks away . The Prime Minister is expected to announce plans to cut Business Rates, while labour are offering hundreds of thousands of new apprenticeships. Lets speak to our Political Correspondent chris mason, who joins us from westminster. Good morning to you, mr mason. Good morning business on the table for all major parties. It really will be the battle to be seen as the darling of business from political leaders. They are regular attenders at this vast, this is the annual conference of the cbi. Its very rare for them to roll up of the cbi. Its very rare for them to rollup in of the cbi. Its very rare for them to roll up in this do during the middle of an election campaign. There is one issue that dominates over everything else, the old b word, brexit. Boris johnson over everything else, the old b word, brexit. Borisjohnson will be candid, he says. Sceptics of brexit and the cbi, noisy advocates in the past of the European Union are in the past of the European Union a re pretty in the past of the European Union are pretty sceptical around the whole process of disentangling ourselves from it. Borisjohnson will say he gets that, but he offers what he sees as certainty with his brexit deal. Although, there will still be plenty to sort out if the uks delivered in the next couple of months. It will also talk about Business Rates, a perennial bugbear in business. Hell offer a review in england if he is re elected as Prime Minister. Four labour, they are going to talk about apprenticeships and Climate Change, a huge number of apprenticeships that labour say they would want if they were in government. The lib dems will talk the whole time about brexit again, saying if we were elected as a majority, we would cancel it, we would revoke article 50. So lots of things to talk about in the conference today, but it will all come back to brexit. Good to the other early in the morning for that. You, chris. Sorry to interrupter. A stand off between pro democracy activists and police is continuing at a university in hong kong, following a night of fierce clashes. At least a0 protesters have been arrested, with a number still occupying parts of the polytechnic university. Our asia correspondent robin brant is there now for us. A very good morning to you. And we can see the devastation behind you. What is the latest . What has been going on . Well, at the very latest, in the last half an hour or so, quite a lot of drama on the side of the building, actually. A small group of protesters emerged, they made a run for it. Under this footbridge, making their way through oi footbridge, making their way through or over the barricades them or their friends had been building in the last few days and then over the green barriers. They were pursued by police, lots of tear gas. That is the first sign we have seen in the last 4 5 hours of the hundred or so protesters holed up inside that university building, trying to make a break for it. University building, trying to make a breakfor it. There university building, trying to make a break for it. There were several arrests but it looks like most of them got away. For now, the bulk remained inside. Theyve been in there all night. Some attempted to get out, others have been content a p pa re ntly get out, others have been content apparently to stay inside. But it looks like the police are being more assertive also in last hour, they have reta ke n assertive also in last hour, they have retaken the bridge over there. That one in the distance, that is where we were last night. Its one of the main areas of confrontation between police and protesters. Now please have moved along there, theyre moving closer to the university building. We will be back with you in the next hour or so. Thank you for the update. Large parts of central venice are underwater again, as another exceptionally high tide flooded the city for the third time in less than a week. The venice has suffered its worst series of high tides since 1872, when official statistics were first produced. Strong winds have made the flooding worse there, but the mayor of venice has blamed it in part on Climate Change. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning, everyone. First thing this morning is a cold start. Weve also got some fog, particularly across dental and southern scotland and cumbria. That could well take its time to clear, and across parts of glasgow, for example, you may find it doesnt clear at all. That will bring the temperatures down. But for many it will be a sunny day and mainly dry. High is dominating our weather at the low pressures to the eased is taking the remnants of rain, and we wont see the next series of fronts until tomorrow east. The central and southern scotla nd east. The central and southern scotland and cumbria. Most of that lifting, and then you can see there will be a fair bit of sunshine. Summarised in surfaces across the highlands in Northern Isles this morning. One or two showers coming of the northerly wind, down the east coast. Quite a gusty wind in east anglia this morning. Whichever way you look at it, it is going to feel cold. Some temperatures not reaching freezing under that fog. As we head to the evening and overnight we have this brisk wind. Still, were looking at a quiet night weather wise, lots of clear skies and the temperature is going to fall away, except for in the west where there will be more cloud with the approaching weather front. So these temperatures you can expect in the towns and cities but we could hit 10 towns and cities but we could hit 10 in some of the sheltered glands, so 10 in some of the sheltered glands, 03 10 in some of the sheltered glands, so a widespread frost. It will be the coldest night of this autumn so far. Temperatures freeze across Northern Ireland and South West England temperature is three. Low pressure still towards the east tomorrow, we have this set of weather fronts is coming tomorrow, we have this set of weatherfronts is coming our way, but whether across the uk is still clinging on to that area of High Pressure. That means after a cold and frosty start, any patchy mist and frosty start, any patchy mist and fog should lift and we will have more of a breeze tomorrow and a lot of dry weather, a lot of sunshine. However, in the west we have this weather front coming however, in the west we have this weatherfront coming in, and as however, in the west we have this weather front coming in, and as well as thickening cloud it will bring in some rain. So not as cold once again in the west. But still pretty cold as we move further east. Into the evening we are still looking at some clear skies, sorry chilly night, towards the west you can see the advancement of our weather front taking that rain a bit further west, too. So from tuesday to wednesday it sta rts too. So from tuesday to wednesday it starts to make more progress, but the far east of the uk is still hanging onto drier conditions with some brightness. Theres the weather front moving in through the course of wednesday with a cloud building ahead of it. You can see where we are expecting some slivers of sunshine. The wind changes direction as well and temperatures are higher, 810. We will not know ourselves lets take a look at todays papers and news websites. Just one story on the front of all the papers, and they all have a slightly different take on the fallout from Prince Andrews interview. The times reports that the duke of york is defiant and stands by his decision to speak out over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. It describes the interview as a car crash. The sun thinks the interview was disastrous, but claims Prince Andrew told the queen that it was a great success. The paper says he was in a buoyant mood as he attended church with his mother yesterday. The daily mail is the only one to report that the duke regrets not expressing sympathy toJeffrey Epsteins victims in the interview. This is after the backlash at what some are perceiving as a lack of remorse. Remorse in his one hour special. And the Huffington Post runs an opinion piece which reckons Prince Andrews bad pr has made a terrible situation even worse. Lets take a look at some of the other stories in the papers. In the times, if you want to read more about the background of the interview, emily talks about the months of negotiations with that interview. It all came together the monday before the saturday night. L big day from business, we heard from chris mason earlier and it is in a lot of the papers, the Financial Times one of those, king of the policies that come out from the various parties today ahead of the cbi conference, we will speak to the chair, the chief executive there a little later and labour will be pledging shares for workers and pm to woo business with levee breaks worth £1 billion. Lots of promises, the lib dems talking a lot about exit that we will get into that with Carolyn Fairburn and about half an hour. Less crucial news but may be important in the world of farming, the fastest tractor has been. Slow that sucker down 130 five miles an hour can you believe it . The parachute, you would need that. You would not be stuck behind that. You would not be stuck behind that on a country motor road. That. You would not be stuck behind that on a country motor road. Im not sure what the plans are for it in the real world but an adapted version is going to be sold around the world. A bit of decent marketing for the tractor industry. It would cut down on your ploughing time. You would need a good handbrake. Talking to eddie jones later, as mentioned, but a great extract from his book in the times this morning, saying he we nt the times this morning, saying he went to see Pep Guardiola when he was in germany, he spent some time with him coaching when he was at munich and he was embarrassed by how advanced one was in his coaching compared to what he was doing and he really liked the idea of the spanish foot ball really liked the idea of the spanish football short passing, high tempo, he watched him train with the players in one session only lasted for 30 minutes but when they come off, the players were mentally and physically drained so we will talk about that, the coaching inspirations, but in the guardian, it is my sort of coach. A great interview with the former forecast newcastle interview with the former forecast newcastle player, interview with the former forecast newcastle player, talking about how keegan would buy them fish and chips on the way home. That is what they need also if you cans of fizzy pp~ they need also if you cans of fizzy pop. Eddie jones talks about, in his book, social media and comments and criticisms that he chooses not to read either good or bad. So wise neither of them actually make any sense. And it is people who do not know you, even if they are saying good stuff, it is not relevant. Also those who say bad stuff. The truth is normally in the middle. You know the plastic packets that we cannot recycle . The plastic packets that we cannot recycle . All supermarket giants are said to each lack of plastic from their own label food and drink ranges within three months. They have been looking that looking at that and apparently they are all going to do it, and it follows morrisonss lead because they did it last week. How do you get on with your neighbours . Fewer people are getting on, according to this new report. The neighbourhood watch and the co op said one in five homeowners and renters that they actually talk to their neighbours and get on better with them than they did five years ago. That is sad but in the same thing, it says neighbour of the year organised and welcome to the street for all new residents and he has curry nights which has raised £10,000 for various charities, bringing students and families together, and on the subject of neighbours. 0h, families together, and on the subject of neighbours. Oh, no squinty Rotten Scoundrels squirty. A boundary dispute, 72 year old couple have been spraying their neighbours with a hosepipe because they have the patio, of the rubbish on the patio had gone into the next door garden and they it back and they have been hosing each other and it has gone to court. I am hosing each other and it has gone to court. Iam not hosing each other and it has gone to court. I am not sure they will win neighbour of the year. If i arrived in the new road and they had a welcome to the road party, i would be slightly worried. Not even if they offered you curry . Well, true. Well, our dog escaped and we did not know actually. Our neighbour came around and said i think this is your winnie and brought her back. 0h you know that face that dogs do when they have been a bit naughty . Im sorry, im very, very sorry, i was chasing a squirrel. Thank you both so much, we will see you later. We talked about some of the main front pages but Prince Andrew featured on most of those. Many reporting on calls for him to apologise and assist enquiries into Jeffrey Epstein in the united states. Lets speak to the royal biographer, catherine mayer. Shes also president of the Womens Equality Party although shes not standing in next months general election. Shejoins us from Buckingham Palace. Iimagine you i imagine you like many millions of others watched the interview. What do you make of it . It is a terrible interview it was a very bad misjudgment on his part but obviously, that is a misjudgment compounding the original misjudgment of his association with epstein. And we understand, because more information is coming about it all the time, it would have been a lot of negotiations, notjust with the bbc but within the royal family as well, so do you think other people would have been counselling him against it . I do. You know, i heard the reports this morning that Emily Maitlis believes the screen the queen sanctioned it, it is possible but i do not think the queen would have understood, in that case, exactly what was planned or how ill conceived it was and im quite surprised by that. I suspect also that this reflects the thought of shifting power structures within the palaces at the moment. New no, that there is to quite a transition going on and you know. This is a lot less of a tight communications. Platform than they would have had before. And as i say, i mean, massively ill conceived but it is massive massively ill conceived really because of one central reason which is that Prince Andrew, instead of using this platform to express contrition and to validate the experiences of the victims of epstein, instead presented himself as the victim and expressed no contrition at all. Would that have made a difference, if he had expressed more remorse, in your view . I think that it was a bad idea from a Communications Point of view anyway. But, you know, it has happened is, we know there are at least 23 victims of epstein who have been denied justice because of his death. There may be many more. And in him actually giving an interview that, instead of talking about that, instead of making that clear, just instead, revealed this culture of impunity, of this reflex to defend, of, you know, a series of very poor and strange excuses. He couldnt really have been worse. It is really ha rd to really have been worse. It is really hard to think of anything more damaging that could have been done as an interview, either to those victims orfrom as an interview, either to those victims or from the point of view of what he was trying to achieve. He certainly has not salvaged his reputation here. He has made it a lot worse, i would say. There are a lot worse, i would say. There are a lot of people, particularly in the united states, asking for him to a nswer united states, asking for him to answer questions under oath. What are the chances of it happening . You know, i dont know the answer to that. But what i do think is that there is one intentional good effect of this interview, which is, and i mentioned the culture of impunity, it is actually laid bare some of the mechanisms, and none of this could have happened if it were not for other people who enabled it, if it we re other people who enabled it, if it were not, you know, epstein, the epstein like people of the world or indeed the other men who have, for example, been revealed by me to, they require not just example, been revealed by me to, they require notjust their own malevolence but it series of enabled enablers and people who lend them credibility metoo whether intentionally or not. And so, you know, if the only good thing at this point in time that Prince Andrew could do is actually to do anything he can to give those that is justice. Those victims justice. But it helps us to understand what the mechanisms are and perhaps look at more permanent and thoroughgoing ways to attack the kind of systems that are supporting this. Can i ask you, you are a biographer of Prince Charles and you will know him well. How will he react to. . Charles and you will know him well. How will he react to. . I do charles and you will know him well. How will he react to. . I do know andrew. 0h, how will he react to. . I do know andrew. Oh, well, 0k how will he react to. . I do know andrew. Oh, well, ok i how will he react to. . I do know andrew. Oh, well, 0k iworked in china with Prince Andrew, when he was uk trade envoy. And i do also know his brother. They have certain similarities. All the queens children were brought up in this very strange bubble where they were, on the one hand, told how special they were and on the others, told that they could not make any decisions for themselves, that they couldnt ever do realjobs queens. So they were both sort of indulged and deprived of any agency. And in the case of charles and anne, they had a much more austere upbringing then andrew and edward who were much more indulged generally. We certainly see that. Sorry to press you, how would Prince Charles react to that interview . So what i was going to say, i think Prince Charles will be furious about this. Because it is, this is done very serious damage to the monarchy at, you know, the only way the monarchy works if if people do not stop start asking what it is for and if you think about what royal white Prince Andrew is for, who has no constitutional role as such, the only thing can be to promote ideals, values and organisations and i dont mean people expressing working, so what he has done has drawn attention to that kind of question of what is the monarchy for . And not given any kind of good answers, and just given damaging ones. Thank you so much for your time this morning here on bbc brea kfast. And the bbc newsnight special Prince Andrew and the epstein scandal is available on the iplayer. It is one full hour of very interesting television. Good morning, im asad ahmad. New trains into london Waterloo Station which are the cause of two years of strikes and further walk outs next month wont be running until the summer. South western railway say software is taking longer to develop, including the driver operated doors, which is the cause of the long running dispute. But although the trains introduction is to be significantly delayed, the strikes are still due to go ahead throughout december. As we get closer to the general election, theres been increased attention from mps about the abuse they receive. So two london politicians, including labours Teresa Pearce, former mp for erith and thamesmead, and conservative james brokenshire, candidate for old bexley and sidcup, have spoken to bbc london about the impact the abuse has had upon them. There are extremists who are out there who would seek to cause violence against others. I think that we always need to challenge that. Being an mp is a very, very difficultjob because one of the things is that people do not see you asa human things is that people do not see you as a human being, they see you as an mp, like, as if you dont have feelings. The Road Safety Charity brake says theres been a rise in the number of People Killed or seriously injured on londons roads to 11 every day. On the roads in swiss cottage, theres no access from the Finchley Road northbound to college road, as the traffic lights are faulty. In edmonton, meridian way is closed northbound from conduit lane for electricity work. Now the weather with kate. Good morning. We have a slightly more settled start to this week, plenty of dry weather around, at least today, with some sunshine but it is ill feeling rather cold. We have a brisk north easterly wind to content with, and that is what is making things feel chilly. Patchy cloud around but this afternoon, some lengthy spells of sunshine and the temperature feeling cold, 7 nine celsius. Overnight, wind will fall a little lighter. Clear skies and the temperature drops down below zero. So a frosty start tomorrow morning. Where the windfalls like, the clear skies will get some mist and fog patches as well and because the temperature, it could be freezing fog so some dangerous conditions first thing tomorrow morning so a cold and frosty start to tuesday, the mist and fog taking its time to lift but brighter through the afternoon. The temperature still chilly, plenty of dry weather around, at least for the first part of this week and as we head towards the end of the week, slightly milder temperatures, and thatis slightly milder temperatures, and that is where we may see a little bit of rain. And thats why the investment proposals that we have two fix that infrastructure, to make sure that people can get on theirtrains and get make sure that people can get on their trains and get to work in the morning without having to pay a fortune are our chilly for businesses, cut iv in rural areas without access to decent broadband, that they can get their goods to market through the broadband. These are things that are really going to transform business in this country. 0k. And i think businesses will welcome that. You so you been speaking to businesses, so does g. And on that point of nationalising bt, she said she spoke to quite a few businesses who are wondering, are we next . And the points he makes is that uncertainty will freeze investment. Point she makes. Let me say this is the biggest programme of investment in our infrastructure that we have seen in a0 years. So it isnt going to freeze investment. This is about enhancement. Investment. Let me take your questions head on. If we were sitting here 250 years ago when there were tolls on all of our roads, you know, people would have thought how strange do you think you can provide roads forfree. Well, what happened was some bright economist came along and said look, if you think the tolls away, people will be able to do more trade. If they do more trade there will be more wealth. If there is more wealth than there are more jobs and a bigger tax base in order to pay for those roads. That is what we are saying about broadband. Its seeing that this is the needs of business. If you provide the infrastructure free of charge, what you then do is create much greater wealth to be able to afford that. But the business infrastructure is very different to how it was 250 years ago. Does a good point. Thats what im saying. It is also my point, because i want to come back to another thing that the boss of them there has been saying. Valuing none of the contribution that business makes shuts out investment. That is not a good image for the labour at my party. That is absolutely true, and that is why we do value the contribution that business makes. Thats why weve been working very closely with business on the apprenticeships, this claimant apprenticeships, this claimant Apprenticeship Scheme that you mention. Climate, because we believe stopping Climate Change is a huge opportunity to create jobs and well in this country. And the scheme, the apprenticeships levy that the government has had has been very poor. Another businesses have been telling us. It is not flexible enough, it doesnt work for them. So what were doing is increasing flexibility, were enabling them to use those funds to pass down the supply chain because at the moment it only applies to big business. And this will enable their partners, the Small Businesses in their supply chain, to benefit from this as well. And of course, we will then be seeing a quarter of that time, which they are saying is not in affecting their business does make a fitting, not benefiting their business so they can spend that in the future. Young people coming out of school, learning how to build wind farms, put solar panels on grooves and efficiently heat our homes, these otherjobs of efficiently heat our homes, these other jobs of the future. Efficiently heat our homes, these otherjobs of the future. Solar panels on homes. These are the jobs of the future. We want to work with businesses to achieve the best results for the money already committed. I know Jeremy Corbyn will be speaking a lot more about those apprenticeships later today. Can i ask you another issue that dominates the papers this morning. Did you watch the interview with prince andreu . I havent seen it, but watch the interview with prince andreu . I havent seen it, but i am aware of what has been reported. Prince andrew. Do you think it was illjudged . My thoughts are with the victim of this. And Jeffrey Epstein i think victim of this. And Jeffrey Epstein i think the issues here are men in power abusing their power, abusing the privilege, and taking advantage of vulnerable young people. Do you think Prince Andrew should have mentioned that in the interview . Well, i think he and according to some of the reports this morning, he believes he should have mentioned it in that interview, and i cant imagine how anybody who is looking at this situation what happened with epstein and the crimes he was actually found guilty of, as well as the ones that he died through committing suicide before he could be found to be guilty of i think most of us will find this a vile situation in which the people who we re situation in which the people who were exploited, those we should be focusing on first stop you think you should speak to us authorities as well . But is a matter for him to judge and if he would want to be open as he appears to be from the interview then i cannot see any reason why he would wish to do that. I am sure he would wish to do that. I am sure he would want to make sure thatjustice is served in the best way possible. Good to talk to you, thank you for your time. With just 2a days to go until britain goes to the polls, well be hearing from each of the major parties this morning. Were going to bejoined by sam gyimah from the liberal democrats ataround 7 10am, and then at 7 20am, well talk to the conservatives Andrea Leadsom. In the next few minutes as well we will hear from the cbi. How on earth will hear from the cbi. How on earth will be fit all of this in today . But we will heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. What does the giant squirrel have to say . What does the giant squirrel have to 7 i what does the giant squirrel have to say . I hope you are talking about him this morning is a cold start. The temperature in the highlands is 8 the temperature in the highlands is 8 frost, also some fog to watch out for as well. This week, although there is some rain in the forecast, it will not be as heavy as it was yesterday. There will be sunny spells again at times, it will be freezing breezy, but by the end of the week it will not be as cold so let me show you that. To start, blue, they are usurped by yellow, indicating higher temperatures coming our way. From the west. Eventually by the end of the week, or yellow across much of the chart so temperatures by then will be roughly where they should be at this stage of november or a bit higher. First thing, losing the rain from the south east, it will clear, fog this morning across central and southern scotland and cumbria, it will be slow to lift, some of it will be slow to lift, some of it will linger through the course of the day. A peppering of showers across the north and the east with the risk of ice across the Northern Highlands and the Northern Isles. Temperatures range from two degrees, it could be freezing if you are stuck in an area with fog all day, to about ten, as we come further south. The other thing we have, whether front approaching. Through this evening and overnight, the cloud will build in from the west. Clear skies for much of the rest of the uk means it is going to be a cold night across the board. Except for in the west, we have the cloud. This temperatures represent what you can expect in towns and cities but in rural areas of course they will be lower, and we could have some sheltered glens in scotland getting as low as 10. The coldest night of this autumn so far was last week at 8. 1. We this autumn so far was last week at 8. 1. We are already at 8 now, so tomorrow, it will be even colder. As we had from tuesday evening into wednesday, see some showers, patchy mist and fog, and then we have a weather front coming mist and fog, and then we have a weatherfront coming in, bringing more rain. We start off on a cold note, a frosty one with the patchy mist and fog around merseyside, cheshire for example. The client thickens across western scotland, Northern Ireland, western parts of wales. And then, here comes the rain, infrom wales. And then, here comes the rain, in from the west. Tens and 11th in the west but still in the further east, it is going to be that bit cooler and any patchy mist and fog though should not last too long. Especially so tuesday into wednesday with that breeze picking up. We are clinging onto High Pressure by the skin of our teeth in the east on wednesday but we have an array of weather fronts coming in from the west. That means we will see thicker cloud and some rain, change in wind means will start to see some temperatures recover, looking at about 6 10, but they continue to recover by the end of the week. Thank you very much and we will be talking about cold temperatures now, actually, carol. You are very excited about this, arent you . Borisjohnson, Jeremy Corbyn and jo swinson will all be making their big election pitches to Business Leaders later. Seans looking into this one for us. Good morning. Yes. The annual gathering of britains top Business Leaders in london is closely watched most years, but even more so this time in the middle of a general election campaign. The view of the members of the cbi known in the old days as the confederation of british industry matters. Thats because the organisation speaks for around 200,000 businesses across the uk. Between them, the companies employ about seven Million People thats around a third of all employees that work in the private sector. So what do the businesses there want to hear from the Political Parties . Dame Carolyn Fairbairn is the director general of the cbi. Shesjoining me from the conference. Good morning to you. You have got them lined up, telling you what they wa nt to them lined up, telling you what they want to do for business, but what is it you want to hear from them . Good morning. Yes, as you say, important day here, we will have all three joining us on stage and there are some really important things that business need to hear. Firstly, we do want to hear about exit, how the uncertainty is going to be ended, and crucially, how we are to avoid and crucially, how we are to avoid an ideal next year because but does not come off the table, even if there is a new deal done in december brexit. So that is the first thing and it really matters forjobs and investment and we also want to hear about ways that the economy is going to be made more competitive, so looking at ways that Business Rates may be looked at, the biggest property taxes in europe, apprenticeship levy, how we get on with building the big Infrastructure Projects of our day like hs2 and heathrow and then turning our attention to really addressing the problems people care about like inequality, skill building, our entire workforce for a new digital age, soa entire workforce for a new digital age, so a lot of issues and a lot of things that we want to hear about today that will help business fire on all cylinders. You mentioned a lot of policies thereby taking Business Rates is one example because announced a Business Review of rates back in 2015 and there were not many drastic changes made, you had retailers saying they may change but why do you think the politicians say today will be any different to in the past . It really does have to be different on Something Like Business Rates because it is holding back the competitiveness of our economy which means jobs, back the competitiveness of our economy which meansjobs, the high street is suffering and i think what is different today is that we are coming out of a really challenging decade into a new decade. We have had brexit uncertainty hanging over our heads and this is an opportunity to get our economy going again. You know, we would like to see a much bigger partnership between business and government that tackles these issues. That is more radical and maybe sometimes in the past it has been words but today we are saying that there needs to be action. You mind how much is borrowed to get that money going into infrastructure and investment around the uk . Can we afford to do all of the things, you mentioned hs2 and heathrow and many other Infrastructure Projects across the uk but lots of parties are talking about. Can we do it . |j believe that we can invest more, as long as we bring private sector in alongside Public Sector which is why it is so important to get the right policies. There are some challenges out there like nationalisation which will potentially dampen investment. But we do have to count up spending pledges, you know, money is not endless but i think if you get private sector and Public Sector working on Something Like hs2 on the heathrow expansion which is almost entirely private money, then i think we could do a huge thing and it is not just the we could do a huge thing and it is notjust the projects, how we connect the northern cities manchester and leeds and how we get the regional commuting distance is feeling much shorter and i believe we can do it but it is about private and public working together. Thank you for your time from the cbi conference. We will wait and see exactly what the reaction is from businesses today and we will be hearing all of those three Party Leaders tell them what they think they should be doing in the next government. Excellent, iam they should be doing in the next government. Excellent, i am sure they will be listening carefully, thank you, sean. Much more on the way, including eddie jones, thank you, sean. Much more on the way, including eddiejones, who will be here in the next 30 minutes. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. Im asad ahmad. New trains into london Waterloo Station which are the cause of two years of strikes and further walkouts next month wont be running until the summer. South western railway say software is taking longer to develop including for the driver operated doors, which is the cause of the long running dispute. But although the introduction of the trains is to be significantly delayed, the strikes are still due to go ahead in december. There are extremists that are out there who would seek to cause violence against others. I think that we always need to challenge that. Being an mp is a very, very difficultjob because one of the things is people do not see you as a human being, they see you as an mp, like, as if you dont have feelings. The Road Safety Charity brake says theres been a rise in the number of People Killed or seriously injured on londons roads to 11 every day. The figure has been released to coincide with road safety week. The charity also found that over half of londoners asked said they had a near miss with a vehicle in the past year. Brake is encouraging more drivers to find alternative ways of transport to reduce fatalities. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. Theres a good service on the all tube lines this morning, apart from waterloo city as they fix faulty trains. On the trains south western trains towards waterloo cant stop at Clapham Junction because of a track circuit failure that could last all morning. On the roads in swiss cottage, theres no access from the Finchley Road northbound to college road as the traffic lights are faulty. Now the weather with kate. Good morning. Well, we have a slightly more settled start to this week. Plenty of dry weather around, at least today, with some sunshine, but it is still feeling rather cold. Weve got a brisk north easterly wind to content with, and thats what is making things feel rather chilly. Theres a bit of patchy cloud around but this afternoon, some lengthy spells of sunshine. The temperature, like i said, feeling cold between 7 9 nine celsius. Now overnight tonight, the wind will fall a little lighter. Weve got clear skies and the temperature drops down below zero, so a frosty start tomorrow morning. Where the windfalls light, the clear skies will get some mist and fog patches as well, and because of the temperature, that could be freezing fog, so some dangerous conditions first thing tomorrow morning. So a cold and frosty start to tuesday. That mist and fog taking its time to lift, but brighter through the afternoon. The temperature still chilly. Plenty of dry weather around at least for the first part of this week. As we head towards the end of the week, slightly milder temperatures, and thats where we might see a little bit of rain. Our headlines today Prince Andrew faces calls to apologise to the victims of sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. A night of fiery clashes in hong kong as protesters try to stop police storming a University Campus. Pitching for the business vote. From apprenticeships to brexit Party Leaders look to persuade britains bosses that they are best placed to run the country. England wrap up their euro 2020 qualifiers with a dominant a 0 win over kosovo. Theyre now one of the top seeds for next summers tournament. He guided england to their first Rugby World Cup final for 12 years, so what next for eddie jones . Well ask him, at 7 30 this morning. Its a cold and frosty starter this morning, but when the sun comes up it will remain chilly but dry. We have come to Buckingham Palace and highly unusual circumstances. Its interview that continues to dominate the national conversation. People close to Prince Andrew told the bbc he stood by his decision to do it. He said he wanted to address theissues do it. He said he wanted to address the issues involved, with what he called honesty and humility. But its hard to find anyone who thinks its hard to find anyone who thinks it was a success. I think a member of the royal family who clearly was friendly with a convicted sex offender who is going to go on television, the first words out of his mouth should be im sorry, and if theres anything i can do to assist these victims in any way, shape and form, i would want to do that. But todays daily mail has claimed that Prince Andrew has expressed in private the sympathy for epsteins victims that he hadnt expressed in public. The sun takes a different line, claiming the prince had told the queen his interview had been a great success. Whatever the angle, the interview continues to dominate the headlines. Theres also analysis of andrews admission that he had met epsteins girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell this year, even though shed been accused of helping epstein groom his victims. If there are questions that ghislaine has to answer, thats her problem, im afraid. Im not in a position to be able to comment one way or the other. When was your last contact with her . It was earlier this year, funnily enough, in the spring or summer. About what . She was here doing some running. Ghislaine maxwell has always denied the accusations against her. This was her, six years ago. Elusive then, she hasnt been seen in public for many months and no one seems to know where she is now. Andy moore, bbc news. Andys outside Buckingham Palace for us this morning. Good morning, andy. This story really is not going anywhere. Its all over the front pages of the papers again. Thats right. And there are growing claims from the lawyers of the victims in america that Prince Andrew should really be speaking to the fbi and giving evidence under oath. We saw in that report there, a brief interview, with spencer kuvin, he represents three women. And for Prince Andrew to speak to the media really was the easy way out. He said Prince Andrew has shown no sympathy for possibly hundreds of young victims ofjeffrey for possibly hundreds of young victims of Jeffrey Epstein. For possibly hundreds of young victims ofJeffrey Epstein. He also said even though epstein is dad, there is an Ongoing Investigation into his Co Conspirators epstein is dead. And there is also speculation about whether the queen gave the go ahead to this interview. Emily maitlis said that Prince Andrew said he would do the interview if it was signed off by someone interview if it was signed off by someone higher up. Emily maitlis was under the impression that the queen herself had given permission for the interview to go ahead. And you, thank you, and that is something we will look again during the course of the morning this programme. You can get in contact with us via the usual means about anything we cover today. Borisjohnson, Jeremy Corbyn and jo swinson will each address Business Leaders later as they hope to win support ahead of next months general election. The Prime Minister is expected to announce plans to cut Business Rates, labour are offering hundreds of thousands of new apprenticeships. We spoke to Barry Gardner about that earlier. In the last half hour, the boss of the cbi has told us business in britain need certainty. We wa nt we want to hear about brexit, how the uncertainty is going to be ended, and how crucially, we are going to avoid no deal brexit year, because i doesnt come off the table evenif because i doesnt come off the table even if there is a new deal done in december. So that is the first thing. It really matters forjobs and investment. We also want to hear about ways that the economy is going to be made more competitive. So looking at ways Business Rates may be looked out, the biggest property taxes in europe, apprenticeships levy, how we get on with building the big Infrastructure Projects of our daylight hs2 and heathrow. Lets get the latest on this story now from our Political Correspondent chris mason. So today, all eyes on business today, all the main parties are going to the cbi. They will have two kind of, i suppose, tell us what they are going to do . Good morning to you, louise. That is exactly what they are going to do. I think you could detect a dash of scepticism from businesses about the promises that have been dropped into their ea rs that have been dropped into their ears in previous conferences of the cbi, the Business Organisation she leads. They are regular attenders, but very rarely in the context of a general election campaign. Clearly brexit is the dominating theme, borisjohnson will say brexit is the dominating theme, Boris Johnson will say she brexit is the dominating theme, borisjohnson will say she will acknowledge that many people in the room at the cbi conference were sceptics about brexit and remain sceptics. But his argument is he can at least deliver certainty and it is the duty of politicians to deliver on the result. There is plenty of scepticism, to use that often used word again, about whether or not the president Prime Minister can deliver the long term deal around brexit in the long term deal around brexit in the timeframe of one year that he has set himself. Jeremy corbyn has talked about the need for far more apprenticeships and will hope that is well received. But its quite striking. The cbi15 minutes it a 90, striking. The cbi15 minutes it a go, just yesterday, saying that labour could crack the foundations of the economy. Jo swinson turning up of the economy. Jo swinson turning up this afternoon, herpes will be directly about brexit and the lib dem idea that if there is a lib dem majority government, they would scrap brexit entirely, which is plenty in the room i suspect would be in favour of, but also rather conscious that it is rather unlikely that she is going to sweep into downing street next month. Chris mason, thank you very much. A stand off between pro democracy activists and police is continuing at a university in hong kong, following a night of fierce clashes. At least a0 protesters have been arrested, with a number still occupying parts of the polytechnic university. Our asia correspondent robin brant is there now for us. Robin, whats the latest there this morning . Good morning. Yes, i mean in the last hour or so within a small group of protesters trying to make a run for it, basically. They suddenly appeared on the highway below us, probably around 100 trying to climb through or over the barricades that they or their friends through or over the barricades that they or theirfriends had been building over the last few days. Then they moved along the highway here, quickly pursued by police who we re here, quickly pursued by police who were firing pretty large numbers are teargas rounds. Were firing pretty large numbers are tea rgas rounds. There were firing pretty large numbers are teargas rounds. There are some signs that the protesters are trying to make a that the protesters are trying to makea run that the protesters are trying to make a run for it after 2a hours hold up inside. We seen right please ta ke hold up inside. We seen right please take one of the bridges over there. They blocked all of the bridges in or out of the University Campus, with some signs suggesting now trying to move even closer. What they are doing is blockading this building with about 500 protesters inside. Why is this university so important . Ive been to two universities in the last we wept just as have occupied the building. They see them as a place of sanctuary, but they also have strategic significance because this one is by the entrance to a tunnel, the one we were out earlier in the week had a bridge over a highway, and the protesters are using to block roads to stop traffic, and block roads to stop traffic, and block tunnels. They are going to have much impact as they can in theircampaign on have much impact as they can in their campaign on infrastructure here in hong kong. 0k, thank you very much for the detail, robin brant speaking to us this morning from hong kong. Several people have been shot dead while watching a Football Game at a house in california. Police were called to the scene yesterday after at least two people entered the backyard of a home in fresno, around 200 miles north of los angeles, and opened fire. Local media are reporting that four people were killed and a number of others injured. The stars were out on a white carpet last night as the hotly anticipated frozen sequel made its european premiere at londons south bank. Elsa, anna and olaf werejoined by the likes of ida menzel and josh gadd, who voice characters in the film. Families eagerly awaiting the sequel dont have long to wait now, as it hits uk cinemas this friday. Traditionally with fairytales, a prince charming comes in to save the day, right . True loves kiss is embodied by a man saving a woman. This was a movie that broke that norm the first frozen. It was really about the love between two sisters. Sibling love is really powerful, it speaks to so many of us. Im sure the soundtrack will be rattling around many heads for many yea rs rattling around many heads for many years to come. It absolutely will. But im looking forward to it. |j know you are. Thank you for being with us on this monday morning. The liberal democrats will tell Industry Leaders they are the Natural Party for business later as they roll out their plans for britain remaining in the eu, if they win next months election. Lets get more on what that might mean in practice now from one of the partys candidates, sam gyimah. Good morning to you. Thank you for joining us. Good morning. I knowjo swinson is going to tell people that the liberal democrats of the National Partners of business. One of the things they want to do is get on with big projects such as heathrow and hs2. But the lib dems dont even support the expansion of heathrow . I listen to the interview that caroline from the cbi gave. The biggest thing she said was businesses want certainty to be able to invest. The big issue with the Prime Ministers pitt so far is that there is no certainty. It rests on two false claims one, that we can have our cake and eat it if we leave in any future trade deal, so we can have all the benefits of being in the eu while leaving and have a nice relationship. The other is, that he can get it done quickly. But we all know we face no deal at the end of next year, and that is what nigel farage wants from the conservative party. So in terms of supporting business, we know that overwhelmingly that the current deal we have with the eu is the best for business, and he liberal democrats of the party that are the party of remain. That is what makes us the party of business, but also the party of business, but also the party of business, but also the party ofjob creation in this country. And certainly people will think actually, we voted to leave, so think actually, we voted to leave, so you may be on the side of business but perhaps not on the side of many millions . Well, we are on the side of many millions because we ca re the side of many millions because we care aboutjobs, whereas Boris Johnson is throwing the economic car up johnson is throwing the economic car up in the air and is being dishonest with the country. We got to be honest with the country about the trade offs we face in leaving the eu. It will not be done quickly. People are exhausted about this. Can i ask you about your policies, if thatis i ask you about your policies, if that is all right . Absolutely. I ask you about heathrow. As mrs said very specifically, the cbi said to us, they want that to go ahead. Does make businesses said. What are you going to do if you are against that . We are against the expansion of heathrow mainly because of the local community grounds. But that is not what makes us antibusiness. If you through the economic cards up in the airand you through the economic cards up in the air and you have a hard brexit government or a hard left government, that completely ripped up government, that completely ripped up the foundation of business. So you might focus on heathrow, but what we face is far more fundamental than where we stand on heathrow. Can i ask you about other things they we re i ask you about other things they were talking about as well . 0k. Personally on heathrow, have you changed your mind now you are a liberal democrat . No, i havent changed my mind. I did vote, if that is what you are going to say, for the expansion of heathrow when i was a conservative with the conservative with. I dont agree now doesnt disagree now saying lets go with local opinion and stand for the environmental impact, the noise impactand environmental impact, the noise impact and how you deal with that. I think that is a natural position. But in terms of our positive policies for business, for example, we are going to be scrapping Business Rates and lots of businesses are concerned about businesses are concerned about Business Rates, we will be replacing it with a land value tax that would mean in 92 of local authorities, businesses would be paying a lot less taxes than they do. That is good for the high street, that is very good forjobs in very good for the economy. And how do you make up for the money you would lose, then, with Business Rates . We would be replacing it with a commercial land value tax, and making it much more efficient for businesses. And i ask you also, briefly, youve changed your mind on heathrow, but what about hs2 . What price would you put on it . Were not sure of the price that the moment and it seems to be going up and up. Would you put a cap on it . It could transform our Network Within the country, if the victorians had said the same thing about the Train Network in the 19th century, we would not have it today andi century, we would not have it today and i think hs2 will benefit the economy hugely, of course, public money has got to be managed very well and we have to make sure that it delivers on time but it is a kind of visionary project that we have got to do. But the big question of this election i keep coming to is none of this matters if we leave the eu with a hard brexit or we pursue Jeremy Corbyns destructive economic policy. Everything you are talking about in that context becomes a sideshow. Talking about certainty, how do you as the liberal democrats though deliver, this is what people want, they want certainty, dont they . Have you got the numbers to deliver the certainty they are asking for . Well, if you have a remain parliament, which you have if you vote many liberal democrat mps into parliament, then we will be able to push for remain which is good for business and then the only uncertainty in that context is how big the upside is. We have talked about the 50 billion remain bonus which we can invest in Public Services if we remain in the eu, but the alternative which is to deliver brexit is how damaging it is, all the Prime Minister will be doing is trying to negotiate a deal that is worse for the current deal in the hope that it is not that bad for business someone outside, you have the uncertainty of how good it could get up on the other side the uncertainty is how damaging it could be. I know which one i prefer we are talking to the conservatives who will disagree with what you are saying in just will disagree with what you are saying injust a couple will disagree with what you are saying in just a couple of moments. Not to say one more thing there . Which is the conservatives talk about their reputation. Thank you. Every conservative chancellor who has called out borisjohnson, ken clarke and Philip Hammond have been fired from the party. But should tell you something. Sam gyimah, thank you for your time and we are speaking to Andrea Leadsom injust thank you for your time and we are speaking to Andrea Leadsom in just a few moments. Just after the weather, actually. Look at that. You are the perfect political filler this morning thanks, i think good morning. For some of us it is a particularly cold start. The temperature in the highlands, 8, but generally, temperatures are not far off freezing so with the frost around, we also have some patchy mist and fog, some of which is actually quite dense. Through this week, there will be some rain but it will not be as heavy as it was last week and they will indeed be sunny spells and it will become quite breezy at times and by the end of the week we start to see temperatures recover. At the moment and into tuesday, blue indicating lower temperature but watch how things start to rise as the weather front comes in around an area of low pressure and on wednesday, thursday and friday and by friday, most of the uk is under that yellow, indicating temperatures around average for this stage of november orfor some above. Average for this stage of november or for some above. We average for this stage of november orfor some above. We have average for this stage of november or for some above. We have some fog this morning across parts of central and southern scotland, cumbria for example. Some of it is dense and some of it will linger for much of the day and if it happens, it will hold back the temperature. The risk of ice across the highlands and Northern Isles. Showers peppering the north and east of the uk, quite breezy conditions in the south east is the rain that we currently have moves away. It leaves us all with quite a lot of fun today, but a chilly field of the day. Towards the west, the cloud will slowly build later, heralding the arrival of another weather front. Before it comes, under clear skies, the temperature will plummet, and it will be a colder night than the one that has just gone. Except for when we have the cloud cover on the west. Having said that, no heatwave here, either these temperatures represent towns and cities and in sheltered glens, it is quite possible we could get as low as 10 tonight. Once again, looking at a widespread frost, patchy mist and fog forming around merseyside, cheshire, the midlands, down into the south east and some will be freezing fog as well, but tomorrow because they will bea well, but tomorrow because they will be a bit more of a breeze, it should lift more readily than it has today. Tomorrow you can see the progress of the weather front coming in from the west. It introduces initially the thicker cloud and then we will start to see the rain coming in, not the southerly direction of the wind in the west but we still have a northerly direction in the east. So if you are out and about in eastern areas, although there will be sunshine, it will still feel rather nippy whereas out was the west, temperatures are starting to recover, looking at 10 12. Temperatures are starting to recover, looking at10 12. By temperatures are starting to recover, looking at 10 12. By the time we get from tuesday into wednesday, so this is overnight tuesday into wednesday, again the fronts are slowly progressing towards the east. For some, a nippy start when we have had the clear skies. Consider cloud building ahead of the weather front and then they arrive on the west. Introducing some rain but not too much. Largely in Northern Ireland and South West England and temperatures again in Western Areas up to about ten but temperatures generally starting to recover, eve n temperatures generally starting to recover, even in the east, looking at 68, recover, even in the east, looking at 6 8, but later in the week at 6 8, but later in the recover, even in the east, looking at 6 8, but later in the week we see more of a recovery. Thank you so much, glad to hear that. Louise gave mea much, glad to hear that. Louise gave me a bit ofa much, glad to hear that. Louise gave me a bit of a hit because i called you political filler but i meant it ina nice you political filler but i meant it in a nice way you are far more important to the programme than that you are essential to all that we do backpedalling furiously he could not really go very much faster. Anyway, dont worry, i have your back. See you later she knows i love her. You were watching brea kfast i love her. You were watching breakfast from the bbc. You are watching breakfast from the bbc. The conservatives will put Business Rates at the top of their agenda in a speech to Industry Leaders later. The party hopes their promise to reduce the burden of tax, amid a Record Number of high street store closures, could help win them support ahead of the election. We can speak now to the conservatives Andrea Leadsom. Good morning. Thank you for coming on. Can good morning. Thank you for coming on. Can i talk to you about Business Rates first of all because we were speaking to sam gyimah about that. They have gone up faster than inflation since all the way back to 1990. The conservatives have been in power since 2010 so if you are saying you are going to review Business Rates, why should businesses trust you to do that when you have been in powerfor nine yea rs . You have been in powerfor nine years . We have actually done quite a lot to, already, reduce Business Rates and scrap them altogether for some of the smallest businesses but. But the overall amount of money remains relatively the same, a review a few years ago and Philip Hammond chose to almost leave it untouched. Well, i think it is quite clear that our economy has needed quite a lot of change in order to get our finances back on an even keel but what we want to do in our next parliament, should we win the election, is to significantly change Business Rates so that they really are helping some of the smallest businesses, some of our high streets. We have seen some dramatic changes with more people buying online for example so we do want to do more to help businesses with their Business Rates. But lets be clear, since 2010, there is almost a one. 5 million more new businesses, there has been a Good Business environment, the conservative party will always back business 1. 5 million. This is a step to do still further to make sure that businesses can thrive. 0k, further to make sure that businesses can thrive. Ok, but if you are to cut Business Rates, Analysis Shows councils get about half of that money, which is essential in an already tight budget, essential money, so already tight budget, essential money, so how do you plug the gap for local council money . That is exactly why we need to consult widely on it on far reaching reform because it is exactly as you say, there are implications of what you do with Business Rates but what we are quite clear about is that we wa nt to are quite clear about is that we want to help businesses with their ongoing costs, we have already reduced Corporation Taxes to their lowest rate in the g20, and there is more we can do with Business Rates which we know from talking to business and me as business secretary expected trade bodies all of the time and they have all said that are key type their key target is that we change Business Rates. We spoke to dame carolyn from the cbi earlier and she said she spoke to Barry Gardiner and some of the things she said about the conservative party, criticising the conservatives stance on immigration because they say as well as, of course, the brightest and the best, they need people like building site labourers so how do you address those legitimate concerns from those who are running businesses in the uk . What we want is an immigration system that is fair to everyone, so not just to Free Movement from the eu butfairto not just to Free Movement from the eu but fair to the world and what that means is controlled immigration and we have a consultation under way through the very highly regarded professional Migration Advisory Committee that will give us its findings in january. Committee that will give us its findings injanuary. That will set out exactly what the needs are in our economy and again, for me as business secretary, i have already fed in the views of businesses that i have been able to gain from businesses large and small as to what they will need to be able to continue to thrive once we have left the European Union. But the really key thing is businesses are saying they really need certainty, so what are immigration system and of course getting brexit done will do for businesses is allow them to have the certainty that they need to plan to invest and to make hiring decisions and so, that is the kind of certainty that we want to give them. We dont have too much time with you but there are a few other items i wa nted but there are a few other items i wanted to mention to you this morning as well. Im sure you saw Hillary Clinton has been speaking about the report about russian interference in british politics and she said it was shameful it has not been published. When can we expect to see that . There is a process that is under way whereby any Serious Investigation by any pulmonary body a lwa ys investigation by any pulmonary body always gets proper attention, it is important to check every thing that is in it and to go through that process is in it and to go through that process parliamentary body. And then the report will be released once the report is finalised. So it is not being held back for the election . No. Definitely not . Well, you know, it is not a report i have seen or you know, it is not a report i have seen or unfamiliar with but as i say, there is a process to go through and once it is finished, the report will be published. The other thing i want to speak to you about is over the weekend, the Prince Andrew interview. Did you see that . Idid andrew interview. Did you see that . I did not. Do you think it was ill advised for him to do that . |j i did not. Do you think it was illadvised for him to do that . I am not willing to comment on such an issue. I am not willing to comment on such an issue. Iam not not willing to comment on such an issue. I am not familiar with it and ido issue. I am not familiar with it and i do not think it is appropriate for me as i do not think it is appropriate for measa i do not think it is appropriate for me as a politician to be commenting on royal family issues. Im sorry, but, you know, it is, the front page of every single paper. Surely you have a view on something which is being greatly talked about and something which is important in terms of answering questions, whether the big debate this morning is whether he should submit himself to be under oath for the us authorities. It is really not something that is right that i should be commenting on, im sorry. Andrea leadsom, good to talk to you. Even the short answers. You. It is 27 minutes past seven and i am looking at there is so much coming out about the impact of that interview with Prince Andrew and also Emily Maitlis talking about the negotiations that went into this and she understands that it was the queen who sought finally gave the yes that they could go ahead with this interview. Very interesting, all of the information coming out. And of course from america as well. Many lawyers of his victims, geoffrey epsteins victims, so they would like for Prince Andrew to go under oath. Jeffrey. Compelling television, no doubt, but whether it was wise for him to sit down and to be interrogated in that way and no questions were vetted beforehand so emily asked him whatever she wanted to ask him and of course, virtually every a nswer to ask him and of course, virtually every answer has been sifted through word by word, and quite a few of those details have been looked at well. Im sure if you have not seen it, some politicians have not, you can watch it on the bbc iplayer. Interesting as well that some politicians like Andrea Leadsom are choosing not to comment and Barry Gardiner also had not seen it but quite clearly had a view on what had been said and whether it should have been said and whether it should have been set at all. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. Im asad ahmad. New trains into london Waterloo Station, which are the cause of two years of strikes and further walkouts next month, wont be running until the summer. South western railway say software is taking longer to develop including for the driver operated doors, which is the cause of the long running dispute. But although the introduction of the trains is to be significantly delayed, the strikes are still due to go ahead in december. Waterloo city line has minor delays because of faulty trains. Thejubilee the jubilee line has thejubilee line has minor delays. It would not be a morning without thejubilee it would not be a morning without the jubilee line it would not be a morning without thejubilee line having minor delays good service elsewhere. On the trains fast South West Trains towards waterloo cant stop at Clapham Junction because of a track circuit failure that could last all morning. The temperature, like i said, feeling cold between 7 9 celsius. Now overnight tonight, the wind will fall a little lighter. Weve got clear skies and the temperature drops down below zero, so a frosty start tomorrow morning. And where the windfalls light, the clear skies will get some mist and fog patches as well, and because of the temperature, that could be freezing fog, so some dangerous conditions first thing tomorrow morning. So, a cold and frosty start to tuesday. That mist and fog taking its time to lift, but brighter through the afternoon. The temperature still chilly. Plenty of dry weather around at least for the first part of this week. As we head towards the end of the week, slightly milder temperatures, and thats where we might see a little bit of rain. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Heres a summary of this mornings main stories from bbc news Prince Andrew is facing calls to apologise to the victims ofJeffrey Epstein, for his Close Association with the convicted sex offender. A lawyer who represented epsteins alleged victims has told breakfast that the duke showed an astonishing lack of empathy in his bbc interview at the weekend. Jeffrey epstein took his own life while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Borisjohnson, Jeremy Corbyn and jo swinson will each address Business Leaders later as they hope to win support ahead of next months general election. The Prime Minister is expected to announce plans to cut Business Rates, labour are offering hundreds of thousands of new apprenticeships. Police are surrounding a Hong Kong University campus after a fiery overnight stand off with hundreds of protesters inside. Dozens of demonstrators tried to leave after sunrise but turned back as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets. Earlier, police tried to enter polytechnic university, but were met with petrol bombs and bricks. Its the latest violence in weeks of Anti Government protests in the region. Those are the main stories around, but we do have some panda news. Hes been one of the most popular residents of Washingtons National zoo, but bei bei the panda is on his way home to china by private jet all pandas have to be returned to china when they are four years old, for breeding purposes. Ididnt i didnt know this. Hell be taken on the private plane and keepers say hell have lots of treats to keep him going on the 16 hourjourney. As you can see, he found time for some cake before he sets off. I had no idea that they had to be returned. You learn every day. I bet theres bamboo on that plane. Curra will have the weather later. Sally is with us. Carol. Lets reflect on a brilliant autumn for england injapan as they thumped the all blacks on their way to a first Rugby World Cup final in 12 years. It was mastermined by head coach eddiejones, and hes with us now. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast tv. Weve been having a chat outside and you do occasionally watch us, dont you . Do you start your day early . Most days i watch it. Its nice to have you here. Are you 6am on the nose . A little bit earlier. 0h, all right. Welcome home, eddie. Its been a fairfew months for you. Are you able to kind of put what happened into a little bit of context . I know the final was hugely disappointing, but can you look back and say the whole tournament was incredible for england . Yeah i think the whole tournament was great for rugby. But from a coaching perspective, the only thing you want to do is win and we didnt win. So that is disappointing. But i think for england rugby, we put some pride and passion back into the game. We hadnt made the play offs in 2015 in the world cup we put on a good performance. You got this book out pretty quickly, havent you . The whole last chapter deals with that. You say there is always going to be one happy adjusting room, and the other side, and youve been on both. How do you deal with that . Dressing room. When you are older, you tend to understand how to move on, when you are younger it stays longer. You can only assess the performance of your team and how ha rd performance of your team and how hard they put in. Finals are always a toss of the coin. One team will get the ads on the other team is just a little bit off. And you talk in the book as well about the 2003 final, people remember you were in charge of australia, jonny wilkinson, the game was incredibly tight and went into extra time. In terms of the way you recovered from that, would you describe that as depression, yourself, in the aftermath of the final . |j depression, yourself, in the aftermath of the final . I dont think i had depression, but it change the way i looked at things. In hindsight, i was obsessed by winning after that because you get so winning after that because you get so close to having the big prize and then you miss out and you get obsessed with winning, rather than just enjoying what you do. Look, im lucky i am able to have a greatjob, coaching young men to play rugby at the highest level. You have to get the highest level. You have to get the joy back the highest level. You have to get thejoy back in the highest level. You have to get the joy back in your coaching and it took me a while to get that. And how did they change your coaching . What did they change your coaching . What did it change . Itjust became. Probably more obsessed with winning. Anyone who coaches is obsessed with winning. Obsessed with getting the most out of your team. But the big difference is i think you can take it to the absolute nth degree where in the and the only big things matter. So what were you obsessed with . You say everything matters. Tidiness that training, sloppiness ata tidiness that training, sloppiness at a meeting, those Little Things that really annoyed me. And they just they just that really annoyed me. And they just theyjust created an environment that india and doesnt become positive. What you mean by sloppiness in a meeting . Not sitting properly, not paying attention. 0h, my goals. All those things. In the end you understand that doesnt matter because everyone has their own way. And increasingly, younger players are all very different in the way they learn. Having played against, having coached against england for many years, what have you learned from now being head coach for a whole world cup cycle . About england, the sort of infrastructure, the players and the fans as well . Parting with the players, they are fantastic. They work hard, have a great deal of pride about playing for their country, and are supported by this fantastic infrastructure in england. The Community Rugby in england is unbelievable, nowhere like the rest of the world. They do a greatjob promoting Community Rugby, they do get some criticism, but in a lot of the places you go to, the country areas, the club is the hub of the community where everything happens around that rugby club. The media in england is tough god. They are there the whole time. The extremes are more so there the whole time. The extremes are more so than anywhere else in the world. Really . It is fierce in australia. Furisode in australia, and 20 times more in england. Australia. Furisode in australia, and 20 times more in englandm australia. Furisode in australia, and 20 times more in england. It is worse here . 100 . Eight and 20 times more in england. It is worse here . 10096. Eight would you say your early years growing up, being a teacher, would you say your early years, doing a teacher, your early years, doing a teacher, you need that resilience. In your book you talk about how you were quite a tough teacher. What do you bring from those days to now . Well, i thinkjust being yourself, i think in whatever occupation you have, you have to learn what the best version of yourself is and work out what your strengths are and keep working on your strengths. And dont worry about the noise outside what is important. Any job you about the noise outside what is important. Anyjob you do, there is a lwa ys important. Anyjob you do, there is always knows about how you could do it better, what you are not doing well, and youve just got do not get distracted by that noise. Now sometimes you can learn from it, and times you cant. And most of the time, you can. You do talk about not reading either the critics or people who are saying you are great. You closed down both . No, i dont read anything there. I refused to read anything there. I refused to read any newspaper. I dont read social media. And i got advice from a pretty handy codes along the way, i was lucky enough to meet sir Alex Ferguson, that was one of the things he said handy coach. Ferguson, that was one of the things he said handy coach. Is that something in yourtraining he said handy coach. Is that something in your training you bring in quite a few different coaches and styles and other sports. Is that something youve benefited from and thought i am going to do more and more from this . from and thought i am going to do more and more from this . I was coached by bob dwyer who won the world cup in 1991. He was the most inquisitive, curious codes. He a lwa ys inquisitive, curious codes. He always wanted to know about the way other coaches codes, and as i got onto a large degree. There is always more to learn how other coaches coached. I want to play a quick review, if that is all right. You have a reputation as being quite a straight talker. Here are some examples. Maybe you guys are going to start reporting differently. Maybe you are going to start reporting that you did 30 years ago, come into modern rugby. Join us. Join us. There is the invitation there tojoin us. Join us. There is the invitation there to join us. Rugbys join us. There is the invitation there tojoin us. Rugbys is join us. There is the invitation there to join us. Rugbys is a 23 man game. Put your hand if you think we can win. There you go. So, no one. No one thinks we can win. Someone has to ask as dense, mate, because the new Zealand Media doesnt. You guys ijust fans with keyboard. Brilliant. You take these questions with a wonderful smile on your face. Youve got to have a bit of fun. At the end of the day we got involved in sport because its fun. And its important to keep that perspective. You obviously, i know you said media is brutal, but you enjoy that side of it. The thrill of the chase and those huge games as well. When you look back on the world cup and now, do you think andl world cup and now, do you think and i know you take responsibility for the defeat, do you make mistakes in selection, would you change that . 0r in selection, would you change that . Or is itjust about moving on . Available back in hindsight, the one thing i could have changed was selection, and i didnt. It was a difficult decision, because our team had done so well in the semifinal. You look at that game, i was talking to ourgroup you look at that game, i was talking to our group last night. If we didnt allow the one try, we scored two tries, we could have scored, thatis two tries, we could have scored, that is a 30 0 defeat of all blacks, that is a 30 0 defeat of all blacks, thatis that is a 30 0 defeat of all blacks, that is a 30 0 defeat of all blacks, that is a near perfect game of by. That is a near perfect game of rugby. And it is so hard in the next week to be at your best, because you know the opposition, south africa, there coaches telling them if you wa nt there coaches telling them if you want at your best, you are going to get hammered. So they got that extra half yard, and as much as you are trying to get your team in the right mental state, they are always that little bit off and that is what happened in the final. And, eddie, will you stay with england until 2021, and what is after that . will you stay with england until 2021, and what is after that . I will definitely stay for the next two yea rs, definitely stay for the next two years, im looking forward to building the most powerful team in the world. You havent watched the game, you said in the book. Will you ever . No, it may some stage. Were out of time, eddie was that i have one question i have been dying to ask you. Your book is dedicated to your how important having been throughout your rugby journey. Your how important having been throughout your rugbyjourney. Im thinking of your parents particularly. Yeah, nah, massive influence. Eddie, fantastic to meet you. For anyone who likes sports or coaching, really great to meet you, and that book. Thank you very much. Thank you. Its great to see family is still so important to you. Very important. Renmark thank you. Thank you. Eddies book my life and rugby is out on the 21st november. Lets catch up on the weather with carol. Good morning, everybody. Were still looking at some spells of rain, but nothing as heavy as we last week. Sunny spells, becoming breezy and less cold by the end of the week. In the morning, its a cool start with frost around, falling two 8 in parts of the highlands. But if i show you what we call an highlands. But if i show you what we callan air mass highlands. But if i show you what we call an air mass chart, look at the colours. From tomorrow and today actually, we have lots of blues in the chart indicating the cold feel of the weather, but they are then replaced by milder yellows. By the time we get to thursday and friday, those yellows are across most of the uk, indicating higher temperatures than we currently have. First thing this morning, there is some fog in southern and central scotland, also through parts of cumbria. Other parts of the uk have some fog as well and some of this is dense. Some of it will be slow to lift and some of it will be slow to lift and some of it will be slow to lift and some of it wont lift at all. There is also the risk of ice across the north of scotland and the isles, we have a peppering of or two of showers across the is coast of england. Not all of us will see them, and we will say goodbye to this mornings ran from the south east. Here are two in south east. Here are two in south east anglia, it is quite breezy. Most of us will have sunny spells. A chilly field, though, temperatures between 1 10 degrees, lower than that if you are stuck in the fog. Under those guys, temperatures will fall away quite quickly. We have a northerly belize out towards the west under the skies, temperatures will fall away quite quickly, we have a northerly breeze out of the west. These temperatures indicate what you can expect in towns and cities, but in sheltered glens it could be as low as 10. Though a widespread frost once again, it would be some patchy mist and fog forming, merseyside, cheshire, the midlands, down into the south east, but with more of a breeze for tomorrow. You can see the progression of weather fronts coming in from the west, its not particularly fast. High pressure in the ease, eastern areas off to a cold start, a frosty start with patchy mist and fog giving way to some sunshine. Towards the west, with the advance of the weather front, the cloud will build and we will start to see the rain move across Northern Ireland. With that and the southerly breeze were looking at between 10 12 in the west, but still feeling pretty chilly in the east despite the fact there will be some sunshine. Picking up there will be some sunshine. Picking up that weather front through tuesday evening and into wednesday, there it goes, in no particular rush to get over towards the eased stop so to get over towards the eased stop so eastern to get over towards the eased stop so eastern areas once again was not ona so eastern areas once again was not on a nippy note with a touch of frost here and there, but cloud building and incomes the rain. Ahead of it in western scotland, that gets infor of it in western scotland, that gets in for the south west of england as well and temperature wise, well, a little bit better, but still a lot to play for. Thank you, we will see you at quarter past eight. Now, im about to drop the c bomb. Christmas . Again . Do you have a Christmas Card strategy . Strategy . You must have some sort of system. Are you organised . I am some sort of system. Are you organised . Iam not some sort of system. Are you organised . I am not in charge of the system. That is my system. Is it your husband . System. That is my system. Is it your husband . All right well, sean, we are getting some great secrets out here today. Who would have expected that . If you have to start writing them, it has to be in the next few weeks. Its time to start thinking about your Christmas Card strategy, if you havent already, and the battle on the high street for your cash is hotting up, with one big name in particularly having a tough time. Clintons has apparently been feeling the same kind of pressure that lots of other big name shops have suffered from in recent years. Trying to ease the pressure on themselves and reduce the cost a little bit. Are we doing it on the cheap, sending a few whatsapps and Facebook Messages instead . Well, last year, we actually spent nearly £2 billion on cards. £1. 7 billion we actually buy more cards per person than any other country in the uk, and most of those cards were bought in physical shops. So how can somewhere like clintons be struggling . Who is winning and who is losing . Amanda fergusson is the chief executive of the greeting Card Association and is with me now. Good morning. A big time of yearfor you . Very busy, absolutely. How is it, with all of those numbers we have seen, that you can get an established retailer on the high street selling cards, struggling . As you said earlier, more cards about on the street than anywhere else. But i think we all know that there are challenges for retailers these days with rents and rates and i dont know about clintons specifically but certainly, they stock a wide range of cars and we, the british, like sending cards and would like choosing them for specific people and it is an important industry. We do, and when you walk in and you see the array of cards everywhere, and something must be changing for us to have a retailer like clintons struggle, we had card retailer like clintons struggle, we had ca rd factory last retailer like clintons struggle, we had card factory last week as well. What is that you are seeing on the type of cards we are buying, the changing market, are we going cheaper . Are we spending more but maybe being a bit choosing on who we send them to . Interestingly, yes, we are spending more on cards for close family and friends and actually, the young people, 18 3a year olds are sending more cards than a generation ago which is interesting. So what type of cards . Is there a different market than a generation ago . think were seeing a growth in all occasion cards, we call them, general cards that you may send say thinking of you, heard you had a bad day, or i saw this funny picture and thought of you, and cards being a really strong connection and young people are on social media all of the time, we all are, and people are on social media all of the time, we allare, and if you wa nt to the time, we allare, and if you want to Say Something special to someone want to Say Something special to someone that you really care about, you put in some effort, and that is a card. Was there a point when you see all of those Facebook Messages that pop up around christmas time, where you as an industry thought we may be under threat here by online because a lot of other parts of retail are massively under threat by online . The interesting thing about social media is actually, it gives you more opportunities to send cards because actually, you will know if someones grandmother is ill or the dog has died or something. Something that you may not on a day to day basis have known without social media. So it gives more occasion for ca rd media. So it gives more occasion for card sending and this is something we have seen card sending and this is something we have seen over card sending and this is something we have seen over the last few yea rs, we have seen over the last few years, and as i say the fact that young people are sending more cards is really exciting. You see a lot more sort of bespoke cards now, may be done by artist that are not necessarily just the generic be done by artist that are not necessarilyjust the generic Merry Christmas mum. There is a lot more ofa christmas mum. There is a lot more of a range. Where is the money going . To the retailer or is it from those people who are behind the design . Obviously everybody, there isa margin design . Obviously everybody, there is a margin for everyone in it, and there has to be for businesses to survive but actually, we lead the world in card innovation and design in britain and it is a really major industry and we export our cards all over the world it is a big creative industry. Is there a certain trend you have not seen in previous years . I dont know, people are sending more cards from their pets, i think. That is something i am guilty of, i send my mother a card from my cat. That may explain a bit of the broom if people decide to do that. Amanda, thank you so much. There you go do you put a paw print or something on it . Anyway. It is a bit of fun. People love opening cards, it is that connection. I think you are right, i still love opening a card. It isa it is a fascinating industry, the ca rd it is a fascinating industry, the card industry, because it is booming, and yet. I dont know, rebelling against everything else. The stars of the new frozen film turned out in force for the european premiere last night, and weve been asking you to send in pictures of your own elsas, annas and olafs. Thank you for all of your comments and tweets about the eddiejones interview. Your comments and tweets about the eddie jones interview. I your comments and tweets about the eddiejones interview. I never expected him to get emotional at the end when he was talking about his family. It was a surprise it was lovely, such a lovely man, so charismatic and understated and i was not expecting him to be like that. Shirley ballas will be in here later as well, talking about blackpool, of course, and strictly at the weekend. But also the abuse and Death Threats that she has received after a fewjudging because she is the head judge that she gets final decision and she said this year it has been worse than any other year so far on strictly with the abuse she has had to deal with. Bishoo should go the eddiejones road maybe she should go down the eddiejones road. Road maybe she should go down the eddie jones road. And the Alex Ferguson one. All perhaps the frozen road. Let it go. Still plenty to come for you on bbc breakfast. I am sorry about leaving you with let it go the whole day. Good morning from bbc london. Im im asad ahmad. New trains into london Waterloo Station, which were supposed to be running in a few weeks, wont be running until the summer. South western railway say software is taking longer to develop, including for the driver operated doors, which is the cause of two years of strikes and a walkout planned for all of next month. As we get closer to the general election, theres been increased attention from mps about the abuse they receive. So two london politicians, including labours Teresa Pearce former mp for erith and thamesmead, and conservative james brokenshire, candidate for old bexley and sidcup, have spoken to bbc london about the impact of the abuse. Brake is encouraging more drivers to use their car less. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. Signalling problems are causing delays on the metropolitan line and thejubilee line still has problems with its trains, which has been going on for weeks. That is rather annoying for everyone on the trains fast south western trains towards waterloo cant stop at Clapham Junction because of a track circuit failure that could last all morning. Va nessa Vanessa Feltz is on bbc radio london and just after eight she will be talking to the editor of majesty magazine about the Prince Andrew interview. L. By for now. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today Prince Andrew faces calls to apologise to the victims of sex offenderJeffrey Epstein. A night of fiery clashes in hong kong, as protesters try to stop police storming a University Campus. Good morning. It is a cold and frosty start to the day with patchy mist and fog around but that will give way to a mainly dry day and sunny spells but feeling chilly. I will have more in 15 minutes. Its monday, 18th november. Our top story. Prince andrew is facing calls to apologise to the victims ofJeffrey Epstein for his Close Association with the convicted sex offender. Jeffrey epstein took his own life while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Theres growing pressure for the duke of york to testify under oath in the united states. Lawyers for epsteins victims say they were almost completely ignored by the prince in his interview with the bbc. Do i regret the fact that he has quite obviously conducted himself in a manner unbecoming, yes. Unbecoming . He was a sex offender . Im sorry, im being polite, i mean in the sense that he was a sex offender. But no, was i right in having him as a friend at the time, bearing in mind this was some years before he was accused of being a sex offender . I dont think theres anything wrong then, the problem was the fact that once he had been convicted. You stayed with him. I stayed with him and thats the bit that, as it were, i kick myself for on a daily basis. A lawyer who represented epsteins alleged victims has told breakfast that the duke showed an astonishing lack of empathy. I think that if a member of the royal family, who clearly was friendly with a convicted sex offender is going to go on television, then the first words out of his mouth should be, im sorry, and if theres anything i can do to assist these victims in any way, shape and form, i would want to do that. Lets get the latest now from our reporter andy moore, whos outside Buckingham Palace. Andy this storys not going away is it . There are calls for him to go under oath and discuss this under oath . Thats right, growing calls from a number of different lawyers representing the victims in the us, calling for Prince Andrew to give evidence to the fbi under oath. We had the briefly from a lawyer who represents three women. He said for Prince Andrew to do this media interview was the easy way out and he should be speaking to investigators. The lawyer said there could be possibly, hundreds of victims of epstein, we just dont know how many. He said despite epsteins death, his alleged Co Conspirators, there was an investigation into them. He did not name those alleged Co Conspirators but he did hope prosecutions would follow. Another lawyer, lisa bloom who is representing different victim said she showed that Prince Andrew had a heart of stone and it was a slap in the face for epsteins victims. Louise. Thank you very much, we will be talking about that in the next ten minutes with a royal correspondent about the impact of that interview. Borisjohnson, Jeremy Corbyn and jo swinson will each address Business Leaders later as they hope to win support ahead of next months general election. The Prime Minister is expected to announce plans to cut Business Rates, whilst labour are offering hundreds of thousands of new apprenticeships. In the last half hour the boss of the cbi has told breakfast that British Business needed certainty. We do want to hear about brexit, how the uncertainty is going to be ended. And crucially, how we are going to avoid no deal next year, because that doesnt come off the table, even if there is a new deal done in december. So that is the first thing, it really matters forjobs and investment. We also want to hear about ways that the economy is going to be made more competitive, so looking at ways that Business Rates may be looked at, the biggest property taxes in europe. Apprenticeship levy, how we get on building the biggest Infrastructure Projects of our day like hs2 and heathrow. Lets get the latest on this story now from our Political Correspondent chris mason. The three big hitters, all making speeches to the Business Community . Yes, they have been limbering up in this very studio this morning. Plonking themselves on this perch to parade their wares to the leaders heading to the cbi conference this morning. There has been a smattering of scepticism from the cbi about the wares of all three of the Party Leaders turning up. Borisjohnson will turn up and say he gets that many in the Business Community are deeply sceptical about brexit, but he offers the certainty, he claims, of being able to deliver it. Although there is a question over delivering a long term arrangement on the timescale the Prime Minister is promising. Jeremy corbyn will talk about apprenticeships, those connected with tackling the emergency in the climate. Apprenticeship something the cbi are keen on but they have been more sceptical over the weekend about the likelihood of the economy remaining on an even keel under the labour party. Sceptical of some of the nationalisation plans we have heard about, not least part of bt we heard about, not least part of bt we heard about at the tail end of last week. As for the liberal democrats, they say they would scrap brexit and wealth that is a mess is likely to be relatively well received by a good number in the hall, plenty will perhaps be a little sceptical about the likelihood of jo perhaps be a little sceptical about the likelihood ofjo swinson sweeping into downing street as Prime Minister in three and a half weeks. The lib dems are sceptical about expanding heathrow airport, which is something the cbi would like to see. Where ever the Business Leaders look, they wont necessarily find a prospectus from any of the three parties in attendance today, that immediately wants them to give qualified thumbs up. Chris mason, a lwa ys qualified thumbs up. Chris mason, always good to good to talk to and we will be following those speeches across bbc news for you. A stand off between pro democracy activists and police is continuing at a university in hong kong, following a night of fierce clashes. At least a0 protesters have been arrested, with a number still occupying parts of the polytechnic university. Our asia correspondent robin brant is there now for us. Robin whats the latest there this morning . Four or 500 protesters remain inside this redbrick University Campus and in the last hour or so, we have seen two signs this might be coming to a head. Riot police have retaken the bridge in the distance to try and regain control of that. That was the scene regain control of that. That was the scene of very aggressive stand off between the riot police and protesters late last night. Also we saw a group of protesters suddenly appear down here on this deserted highway, effectively making a run for it. They clambered over or through the barriers their friends had been constructing in recent days. About 100 in number, had been constructing in recent days. About100 in number, i had been constructing in recent days. About 100 in number, ithink. The police pursued them and there was quite a lot of tear gas. Most of them seem to have got away but there we re them seem to have got away but there were a handful of arrests. We were told there are a few hundred protesters inside but supplies are running low. They have let some red cross medics into treat anyone inside. It is very tense. The police are blockading a whole area and there is a sense of fear inside the police may be coming for them. Those people who have remained inside pass the 10pm deadline last night, they face an arbitrary arrest. Why are they occupying these University Campuses . It is because of the roads and bridges, they are blocking them and bridges, they are blocking them and blocking traffic. This is the entrance to one of hong kongs tunnels and the protesters want as much impact as they can on hong kongs infrastructure as their campaignfor kongs infrastructure as their campaign for change continues. That was what i wanted to ask you, so thank you very much and we will speak to you later. Large parts of central venice are under water again, as another exceptionally high tide flooded the city for the third time in less than a week. The italian city has suffered its worst series of high tides since 1872, when official statistics were first produced. Strong winds have made the flooding worse, but the mayor of venice has blamed it in part on Climate Change. The stars were out on a white carpet last night, as the hotly anticapted frozen sequel made its european premiere at londons southbank. Elsa, anna and olaf were joined by the likes of ida menzel and josh gadd, who voice characters in the film. Families eagerly awaiting the sequel dont have long to wait now, as it hits uk cinemas this friday. Traditionally with fairy tales, a prince charming comes in to save the day. True loves kiss is embodied by a man saving a woman. This was a movie that broke that norm. The first one was about the love between two sisters. Sibling love is really powerful, it speaks to show many of us. It is in cinemas from this friday. You are watching breakfast from the bbc this morning. Ellie goulds family say theyre fighting for justice for their perfect daughter, after her killer was jailed fora minimum ofjust 12 and a half years. They want him to spend the rest of his life in prison after her violent murder, and have called for his sentence to be reviewed. Were going to speak to ellies mum carole injust a minute, but first lets remind ourselves of the details of this case. Ellie gould was just 17, studying for her a levels when she was murdered by Thomas Griffiths. The night before shed called off their three month relationship to concentrate on school work. On the morning he killed her, thomas mother took him to school, but he caught the bus straight home. He then drove to ellies house knowing she was alone. He stabbed her at least 13 times in the neck. Then placed ellies hand on the knife to make it look like shed killed herself. He returned to school like nothing had happened. Three hours later, ellies father found her on the kitchen floor. At the same time, Thomas Griffiths was messaging ellies phone and her friends to leave a false trail. He said he was self harming, but the scratches on his neck came from ellie, as she fought for her life. Thejudge said this had been the most appalling attack and it was beyond imagining the pain and terror she must have suffered in her last moments. Such a devastating story. Ellies mother carole gould joins us now. I know there are lots of things you wa nt to i know there are lots of things you want to talk about, lets talk about ellie first of all. She was funny, bright and intelligent. Lovely personality, very kind and caring, aduu personality, very kind and caring, adult animals, particularly horses and it is such a devastating loss to us. She was working hard, just at the start of her life . She was halfway through her a levels, she was busy revising at the time because she had mock exams coming up and she knew how important they were for applying to university. and she knew how important they were for applying to university. I know some of these things will be incredibly difficult to speak about, please take your time and we have plenty of time for you to talk about what you are here to speak to us about this morning. I wanted to ask you about Thomas Griffiths. What was your impression of him, how long had he known ellie and how had you known him in yourown he known ellie and how had you known him in your own life as well . They have been boyfriend and girlfriend for literally three months. He went to the secondary school, they were both in the form and part of a big Friendship Group. Some of the boys in the Friendship Group had played by in the Friendship Group had played rugby with him for many, many years and thats what makes it all the more shocking, he was one of them. He did this heinous crime. He was welcomed into your family as well . Yes, generally on a monday evening he would come and have tea with us and his parents to pick him up about 9pm and take him home. Often ellie would go for dinner at his parents house and they would see each other after school. He would come back to our house for about an hour because he had a part timejob in the town where we live. He would come back after school and have a drink and a snack and then he would go off to iceland to start his Evening Shift with his part timejob. Iceland to start his Evening Shift with his parttime job. Shocking doesnt even begin to touch the surface about what happened does it . Tell us about the sentencing, it is a minimum of 12 and a half years and thatis a minimum of 12 and a half years and that is one of main concerns . We we re that is one of main concerns . We were devastated when the sentence was passed out, ifeel completely let down by the british justice system. It doesnt seem right that a young girl can be sitting at home, revising for her a levels and someone can come in revising for her a levels and someone can come in and brutally murder her and the perpetrators punishment is 12 and a half years, how is that everjustice . The Attorney Generals Office said the cases under review, a a number of cases under review, a a number of cases are under review, why do you think it should be appealed and there be a longer sentence . We feel there be a longer sentence . We feel there was a planning and premeditation. On the morning, griffiths claimed he had made an arrangement with ellie to come and revise with her at our home. If that was the case, when he left school and got on the bus, why didnt he stay on the bus and come straight through to where we live. Why did he go home and change the cloning. The cctv on the bus shows he had a black sweatshirt on but for some reason, he went home and change the black sweatshirt into a black, hooded top and he changed his white trainers into some black canvas shoes. When he was home, he was getting changed and his mother arrived home and instead of saying to her, im going to go and revise with ellie, he hid in the wardrobe. Why would you do that . I am sure if he said to his mother, i am going to revise with ellie this morning, she would have been quite pleased about that and may dropped him off at our house. She waited until she went out, he jumped in the car and drove illegally to the house, because he hasnt passed his driving test. Instead of parking on the drive he talked up the road. When he was seen knocking at the door, he had his hood up. What does that mean . I would say it only means he was trying to hide his identity. That is pa rt trying to hide his identity. That is part of your appeal . That is part of it on the other part of the appeal is thejudge gave it on the other part of the appeal is the judge gave him two years of his sentence. One of them being that he wrote a letter of remorse. In the letter of remorse, he made no explanation as to why he did what he did. The letter said, explanation as to why he did what he did. The lettersaid, i hope explanation as to why he did what he did. The letter said, i hope one day i can explain my actions and i have let myself down. That is not remorse, and we feel that the judge, allowing a year orfor remorse, and we feel that the judge, allowing a year or for that letter isa allowing a year or for that letter is a crime in itself. He also allowed another year off because his grandparents had written a character statement for him, saying it was com pletely statement for him, saying it was completely out of character. Again, thatis completely out of character. Again, that is totally unacceptable. Also thejudge said he had no previous convictions. Well, he was 17 and if you look at this case, it comes under, it should be viewed under the violence against women and childrens act. And, you know, those sorts of criminals dont have a violent history, they are just abusive to their partners. It is because he was 17 hes been treated, if he was 18 there would be different rules in place . We have this crazy system in this were under 18 year olds have the same starting point of 12 years. There is a huge difference between a ten year old and an 18 year old. The law needs to be changed so there is a sliding scale so as you get closer to 18, so the starting point increases more towards the 15 mark. It is such a heartbreaking story. I am sure many of our viewers are so impressed with the way you are speaking so calmly this morning. Is that ellie and the pendant . Yes it is. You are not only fighting forjustice, you are fighting forjustice, you are fighting forjustice, you are fighting for her as well . Yes, we wa nt to fighting for her as well . Yes, we want to grieve as parents and we dont feel we can come all the time we are fighting forjustice. In my mind, icould we are fighting forjustice. In my mind, i could have closure if he got 17 years, because that was her life. It would give me them peace of mind that i could move on and grieve for my daughter. What is the process now, you are clear you will continue with this process, so where are you in that . It is affected by the election some ways . I understand the attorney general will make a decision on the 6th of december, whether it will go towards an appeal or not. They have received over 100 quests from the public havent they as well, is that important . It only ta kes as well, is that important . It only takes one person to reply, but it has outraged the public. I have seen on social media how outraged the public are at this lenient sentence. Cani public are at this lenient sentence. Can i ask you as well, i am so impressed with the way you are talking like this, you say you have been unable to grieve, is that the same for the rest of the family, is everything on hold . Same for the rest of the family, is everything on hold . Absolutely. We had to make three months for the Court Hearing a week or so ago. Your lives are just put on hold, waiting. Again, with the britishjustice system, it seems so wrong that an offender gets time off for an early plea. That is no early plea for the victim of the family. He lied for three weeks and it was only on the 22nd of may that he admitted for killing our daughter. We had to wait three months until the Court Hearing just over a week ago. During those three months, all the questions will go over and over in your head, not knowing what happened . Not knowing if it was going to go to a trial, was the worst bit. Through the summer was the worst bit. Through the summer holidays, we had to wait to see if he would officially plead guilty. Then we had to hang on again to see what the sentence brought. know you are here with your husband today and it has had an effect on yourfamily and your today and it has had an effect on your family and your neighbours and the whole community . The emotional scaris the whole community . The emotional scar is so deep within the community and particularly the schoolchildren who were all friends, the sixth formers. Many of them have delayed going to university, some of them have gone back to reset and Academic School year. I see a lot of them and it is heartbreaking, the shock and how it has affected them. Also the four school teacher, the pastoral lady he was sat in front of and told a load of lies too and the neighbour in the village he asked to drive him to school. He told a pack of lies to her about his self harming and the scratches on his neck wear from when ellie fought for her life. So many people affected by this . It is terrible. Thank you for coming to talk to us on bbc breakfast and good luck with that. Thank you very much. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. We have just had the joint coldest night of this autumn so far. It is a frosty start for some of us with patchy fog. There will be some rain, not as heavy as last week. Sunny spells and becoming breezy as well. Temperatures will start to rise a little. Low pressure towards the east. We have the remnants of the rain pulling away, breezy conditions in the south east but High Pressure is dominating the weather before the next front comes in later on. We say goodbye to this rain, it is almost all cleared. Breezy in east anglia and the south east, patchy fog in central and southern scotland and cumbria in particular is dense in places and it could take all day to lift and it could stick and that will depress the temperature. Ice on the surfaces across the North Highlands and the Northern Isles. But when the cloud breaks this morning many will have a dry and sunny day with the peppering of showers along the north and east coasts at times. Temperatures, whichever way you look at it, it is going to feel quite chilly. Through this evening and overnight, under clear skies, temperatures will fall away quickly. We are looking at a widespread frost and also at the weather front coming in from the west, initially introducing more cloud and later on we will see some rain. In sheltered glens, the temperature could fall as low as minus ten. The other thing tonight, patchy mist and fog forming. Tomorrow will be breezy but it shouldnt present too many problems for too long and then we have the weather front coming in from the west. That will be introducing rain fairly slowly and ahead of its still a lot of sunshine. Once again, still feeling chilly. Toe curling and excruciating are just some of the words being used to describe Prince Andrews bbc interview about his friendship with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. There have also been calls for the royal to apologise to epsteins victims and speak to the fbi. The sunday times royal correspondent roya nikkhah joins us now from Buckingham Palace. Thank you forjoining us. I suppose the questions are today, where does this leave Prince Andrew and how badly damaged is he by this . this leave Prince Andrew and how badly damaged is he by this . I dont think anyone really could possibly interpret the interview as a positive pr move for Prince Andrew. It has left him extremely badly damaged and more importantly, open to so many more questions than i think he answered during that interview. As we have seen in the last 20ai was, there have been responses from sources close to virginia roberts, closest to some of the other victims, many calling for Prince Andrew to take part in some sort of Legal Process and make his comments make some sort of comment ina comments make some sort of comment in a legal deposition. I think that will be the question for the palace, to a nswer will be the question for the palace, to answer whether he is prepared to do that after taking legal advice. What are the chances of him speaking under oath, as it were . That is a difficult question to answer at the moment because one would imagine that his lawyers and the Buckingham Palace advisors would be extremely cautious about him doing that. I imagine that is a conversation going on at the palace with lawyers for a long time now. Doing that interview has just put much more pressure on him to do that. Lets also talk about the queen, for example, because Emily Maitlis has been talking about the negotiations that went on ahead of it. She understood the queen herself may have had to give permission for this interview. Do you think that is the case . have read emilys piece this morning in the times and it does sound as if the queen gave the final green light. But i have to say and i wrote about this and yesterdays paper, i would be astonished if the queen knew exactly what the interview was going to entail. Of course i dont think she knew, because i dont think she knew, because i dont think Prince Andrew knew about the questions either. But there was something quite troubling about seeing that interview taking place in one of the major rooms at Buckingham Palace, rather than at royal lodge at Prince Andrews home in windsor because it gave us sanctioning from the top. If the queen has a watch that interview now, well, like most members of the royalfamily now, well, like most members of the royal family and the public, now, well, like most members of the royalfamily and the public, think it was a catastrophically bad thing for Prince Andrew to do. My follow up to that is, he is damaged by it, you said, but what about the royalfamily, the by it, you said, but what about the royal family, the impact by it, you said, but what about the royalfamily, the impact on by it, you said, but what about the royal family, the impact on them as a whole, i suppose . Ithink royal family, the impact on them as a whole, i suppose . I think the queen has such high standing in great swathes of the public in terms of opinion, popularity. Long term, i dont think the queen or other members of the royal family will be damaged by it. But they will be alarmed, they will be pretty horrified the institution is coming under this kind of scrutiny. I suppose potentially, questions will have to be asked about Prince Andrews future role for the time being in the royalfamily, until he is able to completely clear his name and answer all the outstanding questions, that there still are. Good to speak to you. Thank you very much for your time on breakfast this morning. We should tell you. And the bbc newsnight special, Prince Andrew and the epstein scandal is available on the iplayer. If you havent seen it, you can go and find it. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. Its been a cold start to the day. Many of you may have had to scrape ice off the car windscreen this morning. Temperatures got down to minus eight celsius in northern parts of scotland. For many of us today it will be dry with sunny spells around as well. All because High Pressure is moving its way in from the west and that is going to keep things very settled. Low pressure into the atlantic. That will become an influence to the weather as we go through the rest of the week. For this morning, still some fog patches in central parts of scotland, perhaps cumbria. Those will mostly clear away but a couple of patches could linger into the afternoon. Showers around eastern parts of england. Rain in the south east. Those mostly clearing. For most of us a dry afternoon with that sunshine. Pretty chilly especially in scotland. Two or three celsius here. Further south, about seven to nine degrees. Through tonight there will be lots of clear skies around. Some patchy fog developing anywhere really from north west england down towards the south east. With those clear skies it is going to turn really quite cold. A widespread frost. In fact probably the coldest night of the season so far. Temperatures potentially in rural scotland down to minus 10 celsius. Throughout tuesday i mentioned that fog across central areas. That will largely clear away and again we are looking at lots of sunshine but the cloud will start to increase across Western Areas with a bit of patchy rain into Northern Ireland.
