More in 15 minutes. Good morning. Its monday the 30th of december. Our top Story Emergency services in parts of southern australia have said its now too late for people in the path of wildfires to evacuate. Yesterday, tens of thousands of residents and tourists were told to leave due to worsening conditions. Officials are predicting a day of extreme danger with soaring temperatures, thunderstorms and a change of wind direction. Lets get the latest now from our reporter shaimaa khalil, whos in sydney. Shaimaa, a crisis showing no sign of abating . Tell us about what we know. We do know that currently, 11 emergency fire warnings have been issued in victoria, most of them, the concentration of the fires, in east gippsland, the east coast of victoria, the worst hit area there, and the warning that it is too late to leave that you have been talking about has been issued because the main highway, the main road in and out of gippsland has now been partially closed. Authorities are saying given that there are going to be soaring temperatures and given that the winds up in predictable and could change direction and the fires could change direction and the fires could change direction as well, they have been telling people it is better to stay put and get stuck on the highway, especially if the fires are coming that way, so people have been advised to take shelter in their homes, to house them with water, to have access, make sure they have escape routes from their homes, and also to go near water surfaces, that in itself is quite tricky because of the drought. We also know this is a popular holiday destination, 30,000 people have been in that area, and some have evacuated but some are staying put. As conditions are likely to worsen throughout the day. Shaimaa, thank you for the moment and we will continue to follow that through the course of the day across the bbc. Police in sussex are into the tenth day of searching for a father of four who disappeared after a night out with friends. Firefighter Anthony Knott hasnt been seen since the 20th of december. This is not something that he would intentionally do, he would not want to stay away, so that is why we are extra worried because it is. It is notjust like him. And we are thinking. Just thinking the worst. So in an attempt to drop john peoples Memory Police have released cctv which shows Anthony Knotts distinctive style of walk. You can see him leaving the pub and walking up see him leaving the pub and walking up the road and as he comes down the same road 20 minutes later it is 20 minutes after he switched his phone off so that is the polices latest effo rts off so that is the polices latest efforts here and this morning, friends and family will also join the search. Thank you very much for bringing us up to date. We will be speaking to one of the policemen involved in the search a little bit later, in about one hours time here on breakfast. The number of high Street Stores that shut up shop this year has jumped significantly on last years figures. Bens here with more on this one. Whats going on ben . Good morning. Yes, thats right. It seems like ive been sat here at least once a week this year talking about the difficulty that high street shops are facing. Well, the problem has got worst worse. The centre for Retail Research have been logging which stores have gone, theyve crunched the figures, and this is what theyve found. More than 16,000 shops pulled down their shutters for the final time in 2019 thats about 61 shops every working day. Its a rise of almost 1,500 from the number of stores that closed in 2018. We thought 2018 was a bad year. It has gone up more we thought 2018 was a bad year. It has gone up more so we thought 2018 was a bad year. It has gone up more so clearly, something is going wrong and something is going wrong and something needs to change. The situation was particularly bad for the large retailers. This is why the numbers seem so dramatic. The likes of debenhams and motherca re they closed almost 6,000 shops, up 80 on last year. So they have really struggled and it has had a big effect on the high street. Just over 10,000 independent retailers also closed in the same period. It is not just it is notjust confined to big chain stores, independence also found it difficult. If you think about this last year, it is easy to forget the names that have disappeared from the high street but let me remind you, toys r us, borders, bhs, staples, blockbuster, maplin, pound world and phones au, those are big names and as we said, the big stores that have lost a lot of their outlets, and clearly the staff that go with it but also those independents as well that i found it so difficult to compete. They say it is a particular storm of many things, uncertainty around the Economic Outlook so people may be not putting their hand in their pocket high rent, high rate i really proving to be difficult for them, and the fact that people are doing more and more online and all of these things are pretty familiar and obvious reasons why high streets are suffering. Is there an answer and a solution . The government says it will invest more money in getting us it will invest more money in getting us back on the high street and for example cutting how much we pay for parking in town centres. Simple changes that may make going back into town and city centres a bit more attractive. It is a sense of change going on as well, isnt there . It is about making those cities and town centres a place to 90, cities and town centres a place to go, notjust for shopping cities and town centres a place to go, not just for shopping but cities and town centres a place to go, notjust for shopping but if you go, notjust for shopping but if you go to the cinema or to a doctors appointment to get a haircut will probably fall into the shops at the same time so it should notjust be about retail. We tend to think about high street as retail shops but it can and should be perhaps other things too. Community as well, yes. Thank you for now. The mayor of new york has announced a series of measures to tackle what he calls a crisis of anti semitic attacks. It comes after five people were injured in a knife attack at a rabbis house in new york state on saturday. Bill de blasio said security will be stepped up injewish areas and changes to the curriculum will be made to teach students how to tackle hate crimes. A man who opened fire during a Church Service in texas has been shot dead by members of the congregation. The gunman killed two people at the church in fort worth before two worshippers returned fire. Police say they are still trying to determine the attackers motives. Graduates will soon be able to manage their student loan payments online as part of an overhaul of the accounts system. The new service is due to start next year. The government is also encouraging students to pay off the last part of their loan by direct debit to avoid overpayment. Earlier this year, it was revealed that millions of pounds was unclaimed by graduates who had paid too much. If youre organising a boat race, a frozen lake is probably the last thing you want to see. But these competitors injinzhou city in china arent letting that get in the way. Theyve stuck skate like blades to the bottom of their boats to allow them to have 100m and 200m races across the frozen water. Its all part of an effort by the city to boost its Winter Weather attractions. The event has turned into an annual spectacle. How amazing that looks kinda fun are they like little plungers . Think rather than sticking the skates on it is rather more professional than that, dont you . Right, lets look at the papers. It is nine minutes past six and jane has joined us and jane, it has been bonkers busy for sport. What is on the back pages . Three letters that we always talk about . We quite like the daily mail, this is trending on twitter last night. Obviously this is because there are two decisions in the last match against wolves where var intervened so it is covering all of the sports pages but we saw this one on the inside which is nice, in the darts which has been quite exciting, Nathan Aspinall who plays the defending champion next in the championship, this time last year he had £20 in his bank account and that was it, he was skint, but if he wins, he will become a millionaire. Apparently. So rags to riches story which we always love. Should we look at the front pages . You will have to do it yourself. I can do that. I am capable of holding the papers. Here are the times, he you go. |j capable of holding the papers. Here are the times, he you go. I £1 million gift was snubbed by elite schools, and the donor offered scholarships for poor white pupils. They turned them down actually and he has offered them to state schools as well and lots of papers talked about which royals worked hardest, a p pa re ntly about which royals worked hardest, apparently Prince Charles was the ha rd est apparently Prince Charles was the hardest working royal last year. The daily mirrorfor you. Hardest working royal last year. The daily mirror for you. Go on. Will i be allowed others . You can have any of these you like. Lets have a look at another one here. Be a local hero, this is what ben is talking about. 1a0,000 jobs axed as the retail crisis deepens. The problem is, you mentioned earlier, it is too easy to do stuff online. I think a couple of weeks ago i ordered a few things and they arrived at the same day and it was the sort of stuff you would normally. Have to search for. You have got to try, dont you . There is a real issue about how this changes our perception about what is normal. The likes of the big online retailers that have made it such the norm now that you can order something and get it the same day or if not the next day, it means the old model of going to the high street where you have to queue for something, carry it, put it in the car, pay for it, it seems old fashioned. Car, pay for it, it seems oldfashioned. Crosstalk. I am still here, the daily mail, the pensions scandal and a big investigation about people losing nest eggs, i am not sure how many of you watched the drama last night with. Crosstalk. I was not watching because i was in bed Climate Change will hit pensions that is according to mark carney and we will talk about these lovely su nsets carney and we will talk about these lovely sunsets we saw yesterday. Ben. Are you done with the front pages . I was paying attention. Ben. Are you done with the front pages . I was paying attentionlj wasnt pages . I was paying attention. wasnt sure. Pages . I was paying attention. wasnt sure. Yeah, yeah. Well, we have already read them. Just wanting to pick up on the high street theme and one of the solutions, in the sun this morning they have pointed out that there are ia high streets across the country that are set for across the country that are set for a bit ofa across the country that are set for a bit of a cash injection and these are the ones that have been chosen, are the ones that have been chosen, a bit of expert support and access to basically the latest research to try to reverse their fortunes but a cynic would say we have heard this before and they have been high profile campaigns to try to kickstart the high streets and whether this one will be any different we will find out but it points out most of these are in the north or the north east as part of the governments attempt after the election of course to inject some cash outside of london and another town and city centres. And a brilliant story here in the times, sorry, the flying scotsman, it is too slow for the busy line, we talked about improving Rail Services across the country and getting them faster but that once the fastest train, well, it reached speed of 100 miles an hour in 1934 was too slow for the mainline now. A lot of concern that it could be pushed off into sort ofjust enthusiast lines to let the faster intercity trains through. On that note we are talking to Claudia Hammond a bit later about rest and slowness as part of that so we will talk to her about that. People throwing apple because out of their car windows apparently could be destroying britains last wild apples. According to experts from the Royal Botanic Gardens in edinburgh. They found trees have sprouted from supermarket varieties growing on motorway verges and that is threatening the last wild variety of crab apples. Is that true . Because they are cross pollinating with domesticated varieties. because they are cross pollinating with domesticated varieties. I feel very bad now. You may be responsible for cross pollination. I love a good apple. They are a good carfruit. A p pa re ntly apple. They are a good carfruit. Apparently so. Dont make it eaten by birds . That is what i thought, jane, but no longer do not throw rubbish out of your car we have talked quite a bit already this morning lovely sunsets yesterday we saw some of them on the front pages and we will speak to carol in a moment but lets look at some of the sunsets. But before we do, we just want to show you a few photos of last nights sunset. Lots of you have been posting about it online. Our very own sally captured this beautiful skyline over anfield. Youve also been sending in your own snaps. Sam sent us this one of the sea at south westjersey. And how about this a lovely end of day image of whitby courtesy of ian. How are you, carol . Good morning good morning, everyone. We did see some beautiful sunsets last night. Some of us will see a beautiful sunrise as well. This morning we have a 12 degrees difference in temperatures in the highlands and it is currently 12 degrees whereas at gatwick it is freezing. Most of us today will have mild conditions, but we do have some rain moving across scotland and Northern Ireland this morning. Eventually getting into Northern England late on in the day as a weak feature. The first thing this morning for travelling in parts of southern england and the midlands, watch out for some patchy fog, but you can see where we have through this evening and overnight there is a weak weather front continuing to sink southwards across england and wales and eventually becoming not much more in a band of cloud and you can see we have the thickest cloud toward the south of england front quite different tomorrow. It will be much colder. 2 in glasgow and edinburgh. As we had through new years eve you can see with to have a weak weather front. Not doing an awful lot it has to be said and we are under this ridge of High Pressure so things are fairly settled. You can also see some spots of rain coming in across devon and cornwall. Perhaps south wales and perhaps as east as dorset and the channel islands. North of that, we are in the sunshine. Maximum temperatures will be four degrees in edinburgh on new years eve, ten in plymouth. If you are staying up going out to watch some fireworks, it is the east and the north of the country that has clear skies. Cloud coming in and slowly moving north east through the course of the night. Also some fog likely across eastern scotland and the north east of england so that is the news that new years eve forecast. For new years day committees to be dry as well. Thank you very much for that, carol. We both love a dog walk, dont we . Back injanuary this year, i went on one with our winnie, which led to a pretty incredible story. It did, didnt it . Dan met tony foulds in endcliffe park in sheffield. Tony was just a boy when a plane, carrying 10 us servicemen, crash landed in the park back in 19aa. For years, tony has tended the memorial, and he told us he wanted the men to be honoured with a fly past on the 75th anniversary of the crash. It sounded impossible at the time. A few tweets and a few phone calls later, well, many of you watched what happened. Weve been to catch up with tony to look back on what turned out to be a memorable year. This is where i was when i spotted you nearly a year ago. this is where i was when i spotted you nearly a year ago. I dont know why, but i just you nearly a year ago. I dont know why, but ijust got stopped and we had a chat. We had a chat. We saw this plane circle, it was just over the rooftops. As it came over, i dont know whether the pilots, or on that side, went like this. Now, we went back, whether they were waving. The next thing you know, boom good gracious. I could have not been here. I have been doing it all these yea rs. I have been doing it all these years. There was nothing here, just a stone. For you, it is all about these ten men and their families. I know what you do want. You want to make sure that on the 75th anniversary of the 22nd of february this year, he would love some sort of fly past over this memorial to mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, isaid, do mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, i said, do you mind mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, isaid, do you mind if mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, i said, do you mind if i mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, isaid, do you mind if i put mark the occasion. Yes. When i left, i said, do you mind if i put it on twitter . I still dont know what it is. That was the day that started such a beautifu
