What a comeback first he was dropped, now stuart broad takes his 500th test wicket and leads england to a series win against the west indies. On the hunt for britains best home made face covering. A National Competition is launched, and well hear what the judges are looking for. Hello, good afternoon. On the final day of johnny depps libel case against the Sun Newspaper his former wife amber heard has made a surprise statement outside court. She said it was incredible painful to relive the break up of her relationship, and have the most traumatic and intimate details of her life shared in court and broadcast around the world. Johnny depp is suing the sun for an article which described him as a wife beater. In the closing submissions to court, the lawyer for mr depp said the Sun Newspaper acted as both judge and jury. Mr depp denies the allegations of violence and claim ms heard was the abusive one. Our entertainment correspondent lizo mzimba has been following events at the high court. No one was expecting amber heard to come out and make that statement. Estimates quite unusual for this kind of statement to be made at this stage of the trial, the trial was still sitting in its finalfew minutes in the court behind me here when amber came out onto the steps of the royal courts ofjustice and made what many are seeing as a powerful statement. I travelled here to the uk to testify as a witness to assist the court. After obtaining a restraining order in 2016 and finalizing my divorce, ijust wanted to move on with my life. I did not file this lawsuit. And despite its significance, i wouldve preferred not to be here in courts. It has been incredibly painful to relive the break up of my relationship to have my motives, my truth, question. My truth, questioned. The most traumatic and intimate details of my life with johnny shared in court and broadcast to the entire world. I stand by my testimony, and i now plac my faith in britishjustice. Although i did not bring up this lawsuit, i am aware of the precious resources being consumed by his litigation, and i will be glad to see those resources redirected to more inportant legal matters delayed by the covid 19 pandemic. I appreciate the dedication, the hard work and support of the defence legal team, as well as my us and uk lawyers i also wish to extend my thanks to the very diligent and kind court staff and police who have been so sensitive in insuring my safety, my protection, so that i could testify in safety. Finally, my heartfelt things for all of the tremendous finally, my heartfelt thanks for all of the tremendous and overwhelming outpouring of support that i have received and the many messages from all over the world. You have given me so much strength. I send it back to you. Thank you. All of this coming on the events of yesterday when her counsel or the council, i should say, for the Sun Newspaper and its executive editor dan woodman spoke of her as a truthful reliable witness, said johnny depp was motivated by alcohol, drugs, jealousy and anger. What they said was a terrible combination. Of course, while amber heard was speaking on the steps here, the high court inside, the final moments of the trail were under way with johnny depps counsel, David Sherborn, barrister, speaking aboutjohnny depp and his view of the case as he had been all day. He said in contrast to what was said yesterday that amber heard, a key witness in this case, was unreliable and a liar. He took the court through several instances which he said indicated this and one new observation in particular. There was a document that no one disputes that amber heard signed and sent to Homeland Security in the united states, denying that shed employed a friend of hers as her assistant in the united states. However, David Sherborn put it to the justice, the judge will decide this case, that amber heard amber heard said she hadnt written the statements, it hadnt written the statements, it had been written by the young woman in question and she said this on several times. He then observed that he thought it was strange that may mcmillan had written this statement as amber heard insisted she had, but savannah had managed to miss spelled her name not once but twice in two different ways throughout the letter. He also took the court through several of the incidents where amber heard says thatjohnny depp had been violent towards her and said that the evidence pointed in the other direction. Not only we re in the other direction. Not only were there witnesses who had been employed byjohnny depp or associated with him, there were independent witnesses like a police officer, an officer who attended one officer, an officer who attended one of the incidents in los angeles, a trained Domestic Violence officer. She told the court that she saw no visible signs of injury on amber heard. Amber heard hadnt said a physical altercation had taken place, which contrasts with what amber heard had told the court throughout this case and on other occasions. Thejudgement was reserved by mrjustice nichol and we are now waiting to see what his judgement will be and whetherjohnny depp will be labelled as a wife beater or whether he will win his libel case against the Sun Newspaper and its executive editor, dan woodland. Thank you very much indeed. The Prime Minister has defended the governments decision to reimpose quarantine measures on people returning from spain, leaving the travel plans of millions in chaos. Borisjohnson says there are signs of a second wave of infections in europe and the government has to take swift action. But the decision has been greeted with dismay in spain, which says outbreaks there are confined to only a few regions in the north, with much of the country safer than britain. And here, travel agents have called on ministers to change their blanket approach. Richard galpin reports. Already several Holiday Companies have been grounding planes which would have taken thousands of passengers to spain. This unsurprising with the Foreign Office now advising people against all but essential travel to the country. For this poulson family, the decision of the government to impose a two week quarantine for anyone coming from spain brought an abrupt end to their Holiday Plans their cases being unpacked. Its devastating not to go, but i think we have to follow what the government is saying, and we are doing that. Some people might think, were going to go, and damn it all, well come back and have another two weeks off work, but me and the wife felt we just couldnt do that to our employers. There are still thousands of british holiday makers in spain. Many more are planning to head there, even though the government has now announced anybody holidaying in the canary and Balearic Islands will also have to go into quarantine on return to the uk. All this to try to prevent the virus being brought back into this country. Im afraid if we see signs of a second wave in other countries, it is really ourjob, our duty, to act swiftly and decisively to stop reinfecting. To stop travellers coming back from those places seeding the disease here in the uk. The statistics show by the government is so concerned about tourists returning from spain. The country currently has 35 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 people, while the uk has less than half of that at 14. 7. Last weeks figures show the number of covid cases in spain rose by 75 . But there are big variations across the country. Over the past two weeks, catalonia has had 8,500 new cases, compared with just 92 in the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile, the way the uk government has handled the situation in spain is coming under increasing scrutiny from the labour party. I think first of all the government need to make sure they have a robust plan in place, but also that they start to get ahead now, because theres been too much of this where we have seen delay, overreaction and then retreat, in a way which causes huge confusion and risks by the way manyjobs in the sector thats already struggling, whether its tourism or aviation. For many in the travel industry, the government measures are a disaster, just when there had been hope of a surge in business. Weve never seen anything like it. The past few months have been very, very difficult for the industry, and will continue to be. I think this change recently has shown that it will be uncertain. But also there is demand for holidays, people wanted to go on holiday. And the big concern is spain might just be the first of many countries where quarantine will be needed. Richard galpin, bbc news. Lets talk to our Political Correspondent jonathan blake. Jonathan, the governments decision on this quarantine that came out on saturday night has caused a storm of protest, of course, amongst holiday makers and travel industry, and the aviation industry. Boris johnson is sticking to his guns today, he is unrepentant. Yes, the government is Standing Firm in the face of the criticism which has come the governments way since this policy was announced, as you say. But you heard the Prime Minister saying there that the government must be ready to act swiftly where it needs to, and as he said, it is his view that there are signs of a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in parts of europe and an increase in cases a worrying increase in cases a worrying increase in cases in certain countries, and that is why spain has been added to the list of countries where people need to quarantine for 14 days on their return from. Now, we have heard about possible changes to this policy, whether that is limiting the number of days that people have to quarantine for 210, providing that they get a test and the results are negative on their return, or perhaps adapting it to a more regional basis, so perhaps excluding the ca nary more regional basis, so perhaps excluding the Canary Islands in the Balearic Islands where cases are far fewer. Certainly though, for the time being, the message from the Prime Minister today was that this policy stands and that anyone returning from spain or any other country on that list of those where coronavirus is a particular concern will need to quarantine for two weeks. Jonathan, thank you very much indeed. Jonathan blake there, our Political Correspondent with the latest from westminster. Joining me now is david evans, joint ceo of collinson, which along with swissport are trialling a test that could replace the need for a passengers to remain at home for 1h days from the day following their arrival. So, lets talk to david now. David, this idea is that a coronavirus test as you arrive at the airport, just tell us how it would work, how much it would cost. Thats exactly right. So, we have been talking about a test at the airport for quite some time now to make sure that we mitigate this exact situation thats happened where the handbrake has been pulled up and quarantine is pushed through. The test is pretty simple. What were doing and what weve spoken about has now been rolled out in number of airports. Its where you book your test and then upon arrival, you take that test, you get your results back within generally within seven hours, sometimes up to 24. If that test is negative, than you do not have to quarantine, if you are one of the 43 exemptions from quarantine coming into the uk. So, the passenger would pay for it, how much would it cost . The passenger would pay for it, thats our current proposal, the pricing to do the testing is around £150. We are continuing conversations with both industry to look at subsidies around that, conversations i had this morning with the Spanish Hotel industry, and its talking about funding that two key people travelling to make sure its not a barrierfor key people travelling to make sure its not a barrier for people to get away. It sounds great in principle. As one of the problems that you can show false negatives, in other words, people could have picked up coronavirus but not show any symptoms for the first few days. So the test might not actually tell the truth . I think thats something weve got to consider, the question here is about the points for Risk Appetite the baseline isnt about zero risk and zero infections coming through, we know that when it opened up through, we know that when it opened up the channels, we know thats because theres 43 current exemptions of people who can go to spain today and can come back and would not have to quarantine. Its about mitigating that risk. Now, what is exciting is something that weve been working with Public Health england. Its about recognising the governments current approach to risk and making sure we protect health and safety. A two test approach, so actually testing on arrival and then a few days later, you take another test to confirm that results. That means that you can get go about your business still. That seems to be one of the ideas that the government is considering at least, a test on arrival, than another test a few days later. That would still mean a few days at home, presumably. Probably not actually. The key thing about the pcr test is that if you test negative, it means that your viral load within your body is so low that you are not actually infectious. So, if you tested negative but in the next couple of days can you are not going to actually be able to infect anybody. You didnt do the second test, and thats the one that would then say if you have caught it, then you would change her behaviour, then you would change her behaviour, then you would quarantine. So thats what weight we have been proposing and working with public ill thinking about. So the question of taking two tests, its a bit of an inconvenience, but its a lot less than 14 days locked at home when you are very healthy. What is your best guess as to when this might be introduced, if it is . I would guess as to when this might be introduced, if it is . Iwould hope that the government will move and flex upon their policy, theyve got an armoury of tools at their disposal to do this, as soon as they do that, we are working with heathrow and swissport as you mentioned, we should get this rolled out in the next couple of weeks. Rates, interesting to talk to. Thank you very much indeed for that. Actually, we can now talk to now, lets talk to dr Bharat Pankhania hes a senior clinical lecturer, at the university of exeters medical school. He has worked as a consultant in Communicable Disease control, for local authorities and Public Health england. We we re we were talking about this idea about testing of airports for my hope you are able to hear some of that interview, is this a good idea, and may be a Good Alternative to the 14 day Quarantine Programme . and may be a Good Alternative to the 14 day Quarantine Programme . I dont buy it. Im so sorry, but i have not heard of this procedure which would work. Remember, the basic sciences as follows, you get exposed to the virus and whilst you are incubating its, you will have no signs, no symptoms and no evidence of infection, therefore you will test negative. Then you will go on for 25 negative. Then you will go on for 2 5 days and usually the median time is about 5 6 days after exposure when you go on to develop the infection. At that point, you become positive. Therefore, to test at the airport is ceremonial. You may only pick up those people who have got overt clear infection. You will also have an error, and the margin of error is 30 , so 30 are positive, but they are reported as false negative. So we have an issue with this testing. The only clear way is to have quarantine. Im so sorry to say it, and the quarantine should be enforced. You should also have a conversation with the people who are arriving and tell them you need to stay at home. You have to enforce it, you will be fined otherwise. Then also test them whilst they are in quarantine. That will give us a pretty good degree of does precision as to have they gone on to convert to becoming a case, and then we identify their contacts as well. There is no quick fix, im afraid. What david evans, who we were just talking to from collin saenz, who was suggesting this test and once this test at the airport, he was saying that, actually, if you do test negative for coronavirus at the airport, even if it is a false negative, what it shows as you have such a low viral load that you are not really going to be very infectious. So, actually, in other words its fine for you to go out and about, you disagree with that do you . I do. My reasons are, again, i repeat, it could be falsely negative, 30 is a very high number, secondly, of course you would be negative if you are incubating it. You know, you are going to go on to become positive in 4 5 days time in most cases. So, by the time you become positive on the 4th 5th day, you will have been mingling with a lot of people and generating new cases. We dont want this. Another idea thats going around it that we hear the government may be considering is that there is either a test at the airport and then a second test a few days later, or some sort of test in a halfway through your quarantine period, maybe after eight days or something. You are shaking your head again, so that doesnt work either right . |j have not heard of any test that can convince me with conviction that we have attested that tells us you can come of quarantine early. I do not know of any. 0k, come of quarantine early. I do not know of any. Ok, so is 14 days, in your view, 14 days quarantine the only way, and is 14 days the minimum . Unfortunately. That is the longest incubation period we have for coronavirus. Most people go on to be positive about day 5 6 or thereabouts, but as a margin of safety and precaution, we know that people can be positive up to the 14th day. So what we have to do really is test after quarantine, have they become positive . Its not only a case of go home, stay at home, come out after 14 days. We need to check that out the 14th day, you are free of infection. Its on site you are fully behind the governmentrenting, but let me just ask you question about that. This is ask you question about that. This is a blankets quarantine on anyone coming back from any bit of spain. Do you agree with that . Because with the Spanish Government is saying, look, yeah, weve got infection rates that are quite tight in some areas in the north, but, actually come in the islands, the balearic some its very low, sometimes lower than the uk, so does that make sense to you . Yes. I have every sympathy for people in the Canary Islands, the balearic and other parts of europe where the number of cases is low. The trouble is, its only low because you may not be testing, you may not be testing extensively, or it is truly low. We dont know. It isa it is truly low. We dont know. It is a difficult call. I sympathise with people who say we have been in a low area, why are we being penalised with a quarantine . I leave that decision to Prime Ministers johnson, but overall, i think theyve made a good call this time. Rates, really good to talk to. Fascinating discussion. Many thanks. Tougher coronavirus restrictions are being introduced in oldham, to try to prevent a local lockdown after the Greater Manchester borough saw a spike of more than 100 cases in a week. With me now is our reporter in oldham stuart flinders. Stewa rts, just stewarts, just talk us through exactly why the authorities have decided to impose these restrictions. Stuart. Well, whats really causing concern here is the sudden change in the trend with the overall figures. Two weeks ago, Public Health england placed old ham weeks ago, Public Health england placed oldham on its watchlist as an area of concern. Last thursday, it took it off that list because the figures were dropping and now, suddenly, another spike. 119 cases recorded here in the week of the 25th ofjuly, recorded here in the week of the 25th of july, that recorded here in the week of the 25th ofjuly, that makes it 50. 2 per 100,000 people here its arise of more than four times as many as the week before. These figures put oldham in number three at that grim league table of local Authority Areas in terms of infection rates behind only lester and blackburn, which is number one at the moment. Understandably, some local concern here and what the local authority is suggesting, is urging, is that people dont entertain guests within their homes. One of the significant factors they say is the high level of infection rates within each individual household. Its a real issue, a significant proportion of recent cases they say involve multiple people testing within the same household. Old ham multiple people testing within the same household. Oldham is a town with a large asian population, and quite a lot of families live with a number of generations of the same family in the same household. So, those, thats one of the key changes. Also outside, the council says observe a two metre rather than a one metre distance from each other, and if you are shielding, continue to do so until august the 14th. These measures are necessary they say to avoid a local lockdown, and everybody being urged to do their bit, butjust to give it some sort of context so as not to frighten everybody, old ham sort of context so as not to frighten everybody, oldham as bad as it is, still far better than it was at the end of may and 50. 2 per 100,000 means that as a proportion of the overall population 0. 052 have the illness. Stuart, many things indeed for that update. German investigators are searching a garden in hanover in connection with the disappearance of madeleine mccann. Madeleine was three when she went missing while on holiday with herfamily in praia da luz in portugal in 2007. Police began work at the site in hanover yesterday. German detectives believe she was killed shortly after being abducted. An estimated one in 20 women suffer from a little known condition, called premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or pmdd. The condition which causes high levels of anxiety and depression has only recently been recognised by the world health organization. As part of bbc research, around 4,000 women shared their experiences, and our corrspondent Daniela Relph has been speaking to some of them. Many times i have not wanted to be alive. Probably got about two weeks of this. Depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts. Hopeless, lost. Debilitating. Tiring. This is every single month that this happens and its all to do with my period. Just some of the thousands who have told us their story. Lives lived in a vicious cycle, month after month. I just cant cope. Im feeling suicidal. For emily grace, the torment began at 13, when she started her periods. The symptoms, familiar to many women, of mood swings, anxiety and fatigue became overwhelming. The monthly fluctuations in hormones had triggered pmdd. But doctors took years to diagnose it. By her 20s, there were regular admissions to a Psychiatric Hospital and attempts to take her own life. Emily was an extreme case, but it left her with a heartbreaking choice. Yes, i really desperately wanted children and a family, but i needed to give up my fertility to actually have any quality of life or have a life, so i opted for a total hysterectomy which is a removal of your womb and fallopian tubes and ovaries. Which is a removal of your womb cervix, and fallopian tubes and ovaries. That was when i was 29 and its just completely turned my life around. Can you explain how . Ive not self harmed or taken an overdose since the surgery for the past probably 15 years of my life, that was what my life revolved around. But help can come too late. Maggies story, here with her daughter aralia, was finally diagnosed in her 40s. Despite treatment, she took her own life for years later after decades of struggling using alcohol to cope. Aralia now has symptoms herself. Even with her family history, she still doesnt have a diagnosis. Id like to know if it gets worse, even worse again, and i feel like my mum felt, ultimately, or i feel suicidal, i would like to know what the options are and id like to have a diagnosis so that i can go to someone and say, right, i really need your help now. Slowly, more research is being done. Antidepressants sometimes help, as does medication to flatten out or pause the menstrual cycle. But still not enough is known about how serious it can get. I think theres a real lack of awareness. I suppose, you know, women may go to their gp now, and to be fair to a gp, you have to know so many things, you know, a little bit about everything, and if this is not something that you are comfortable with, then maybe you dont make the diagnosis and the woman doesnt get treatment. Painful. It makes you feel worthless. Of the thousands who shared their stories with us, many felt lost and frustrated. But hope that they are now beginning to be heard. For me, getting a diagnosis pretty much saved my life. Relief in knowing that its not my fault. I remember the gynaecologist saying yeah, i know what pmdd is, and ijust thought, oh my god.
