Cbs s National News correspondnet Jonathan Vigliotti is on maui for us and sent us this update. The Historic Town of lahaina was hardest hit. And this is the only road in, which i think at this hour is closed down only four evacuations. We were able to gain access to the town late last night and what we saw can only be described as pure devastation. I spoke with one survivor who described the flames as burning so hot they appeared quite stop and those flames ripped through homes and ripped through hotels and businesses, destroying everything in their path. They appeared white. 36 people have died but there is concern that the number will only continue to grow as the days go on. The fire first began on tuesday afternoon and it quickly exploded because of Hurricane Force winds. We are talking of wind gusts up to 70 mph. Across the island there are a total of three wild fires still burning. In one miraculous story of 14 burning. In one miraculous story of ia people including two children, escaped the flames by actually running into the ocean. They were rescued eventually by the coastguard. At this hour there are thousands of people who are under mandatory evacuations including thousands of stranded tourists. The household products chain, which has about a00 stores, warned last week that it was on the brink of collapse in the face of mounting cash pressures. Our Business Correspondent peter ruddickjoins me. Its a lot of stores and an awful lot of employees. What happens now . Thats right, incredibly worrying afternoon now. In the short term, administrators when they are appointed are expected to say it is business as usual but the a00 or so stores continue to trade as normal but the reality is it has been far from normal at wilko for quite some time to stop in an emotional letter to the 12,000 or so Staff Members this morning, wilko Chief Executive said there had been Significant Interest from potential rescuers but given the amount of time and cash the company had at its disposal a dealjust hadnt been possible. But what that does suggest is administrators may be able to find a potential buyer for the business. The question is, how many stores, how many Staff Members could be saved . It seems unlikely this lunchtime that a deal for the whole of the business is possible. And of course, any buyer would be faced with the same problems wilko had in terms of being competitive on price and in terms of being in the view of some analysts located in the wrong locations, essentially to be a strong retailer at the moment. And there is a question too, if a buyer were to be found, whether the future of the brand would continue. If it were to disappear from the high street, it would be a sad end to a business which began with just one Hardware Store in leicester more than 90 years ago. Peter ruddick, thank you. Northern irelands Chief Constable has been facing questions from the board overseeing the police force, after the major data breach which saw the details of thousands of Police Officers and civilian staff accidentally made public. The mistake was blamed on human error and the information was taken down, but there are fears that it could be used by dissident republicans to mount new attacks. Sara girvin joins us from belfast. We expected to hear from the Chief Constable simon byrne, he cut a Family Holiday short to be here today. But three hours later he is still being questioned by politicians around these data breaches. Data breaches that have caused fear and concern to Police Officers here, and civilian staff. Being a police officer, to put it in context, anywhere in the world, it is a dangerous job. Context, anywhere in the world, it is a dangerousjob. But here in Northern Ireland, offices operate every day under a severe terrorist threat. The last attack by dissident republicans was just a few months ago in february when a Senior Police officer was shot and seriously injured after a football coaching session. Apologies have been made already by senior staff to rank and file officers, but will that be enough for the 10,000 people whose details have been put out there in public view . Today we heard from the police federation, which represents rank and file officers. They say that already hundreds of Police Officers have raised Safety Concerns with them. Some of them even work at Northern Ireland s m15 base, particularly sensitive intelligence roles. 0fficers we have spoken to in the last few days live their life under this threat. They are only too aware of the danger that theirjobs can bring. They are very aware already of security and safety, but they are angry over these past few days, and they are frustrated and want to know what will be done. They are listening very carefully to what senior staff are saying and they will want to hear exactly what the Chief Constable simon byrne has to say after this meeting, which has now been going on for more than three hours and counting. Now been going on for more than three hours and counting. Thank you, sara girvin the waiting list for Routine Hospital Treatment has hit a record high in england, topping 7. 5 Million People for the first time 3 million more than before the covid pandemic. It means nearly one in seven of the population is waiting for nhs treatments such as hip and knee operations. 0ur Health Correspondent jim reed reports. Its been a difficult few months for the nhs in england. Strikes led to more than 100,000 cancelled Hospital Appointments in june alone. Health bosses have been struggling to shift a backlog of treatment caused in part by the pandemic, though Waiting Lists were rising long before covid hit the uk. Andrew batty from North Yorkshire was told he needed a skin cancer removed in december last year, but is still waiting. Its very worrying. Im very scared, really. Everything you read says it is an easily treatable form of skin cancer as long as its treated early. And this, to me, it will be eight months later and that is not early treatment in my opinion. The latest figures for england show there are now 7. 6 Million People like andrew on the Waiting Lists for an nhs procedure or treatment. Of those, 383,000 have been waiting more than 12 months at the end ofjune. The government has pledged to eliminate those longer Waits By March Next year. And cancer targets are still being missed, with just 59 of patients starting treatment within two months, against a target of 85 . I cant stress how much for patients its important to have their treatment within the 62 days. We know that for every four weeks delay in cancer treatment, there can be an up to 10 increase in death rate. This is vital for patients. The nhs says this summer is likely to be its busiest ever, with Ambulance Services dealing with more calls injuly than in the middle of winter. The number turning up to a e has also been hitting record highs as the population grows larger and gets older. The government has now done a deal with some nhs unions to head off more strikes, but industrial action involving doctors will continue in england. Tomorrow sees another four day walk out from Thousands Ofjunior doctors, with no sign of a breakthrough in that long running pay dispute. Jim reed, bbc news. 0ur chief Political CorrespondentNick Eardleyjoins us from westminster. What does all of this mean in terms of the government and its pledges to bring down Waiting Lists . This of the government and its pledges to bring down Waiting Lists . Bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for patients, bring down Waiting Lists . This is bad news for patients, i bring down Waiting Lists . This isj bad news for patients, i suspect bring down Waiting Lists . This is l bad news for patients, i suspect a lot of people will not find it that much of a surprise. But its a really big, Totemic Political Issue as well because as you say, rishi sunak promised at the start of the year to bring Waiting Lists down. It is undoubtedly bad news for number ten that things are going in the opposite direction, with these record high waiting list times. I have been chatting to people at number ten about how we interpret this. They say it is frustrating but they are trying to place a lot of they are trying to place a lot of the blame on the Strikesjim Reed was talking about, saying it made the situation considerably worse. They also think there are some green shoots of recovery in there, that some of the longer waiting times, over 18 months or over a year, are starting to fall a bit. So may be a sign that some of that is coming under control. But the challenge for government is to ensure the public it has a grip on this, that even after covid and those strikes they can get the hs back on track. Labour say they are completely failing at that, cant trust the current government with the health of the nhs. But this will be a key issue over the next few months and could be a decisive issue at the next general election. Nick eardley at westminster, thank you.
