At least 36 people are known to have died in wildfires others are still unaccounted for. Large parts of the tourist town of la highna on The Island Of Maui have been burned to the ground. This is what it looke like overnight when flames spread rapidly forcing some people to jump into the sea to escape. Multiple areas have been burnt to the ground and the western side of the island is almost cut off. Officials say, the Hospital System is overwhelmed, with many people suffering burns and smoke inhalation. Our correspondent Richard Galpin has this report. Is anybody still out here . Its time to go these are the desperate calls for people still in the historic City Of Lahaina on The Island Of Maui, as the flames on the marina gets closer and closer. Many neighbourhoods were burned to the ground as the western side of the island was nearly cut off with only one highway open, and thousands trying to evacuate as officials told of widespread devastation in the town, its harbour and surrounding areas. Some people fled into the ocean to escape the smoke and flames. I was the last one off the dock, and the firestorm came through the banyan trees and took everything with it. And ijust ran out to the beach and i ran south, and ijust helped everybody i could along the way. Youve got to know when you can. The cause of all this strong winds from a hurricane in the area, which whipped up fires already burning after a spell of particularly hot and dry weather, which some experts say is linked to climate change. The Satellite Image on the left of the Town Of Lahaina was taken last month. The one on the right, yesterday. The extent of the damage is clear. As well as the deaths, dozens of people have been injured since the fires began burning on tuesday, and hospitals on the island are treating patients for burns and smoke inhalation. The primary focus is to save lives and to prevent human suffering, and mitigate great property loss. So thats exactly what the counties are doing and have been doing. Theres still wind and still fire going on, lives being saved, so please follow your local officials, listen to their message and make sure youre safe, make sure you have a plan. The white house has issued a message of condolence from president joe biden, praising the work of firefighters and ordered all available federal assets on the island to help with the response. For many people on maui, though, any response may well be too little, too late. Richard galpin, bbc news. Cbs news correspondent Jonathan Vinyoletti is on maui for us and sent us this update. The Historic Town of lahaina was hardest hit. And this is the only road in, which at this hour, is closed down only for evacuations. We were able to gain access to the town late last night and what we saw can only be described as pure devastation. I spoke with one survivor who described the flames as burning so hot they appeared white. Those flames ripped through homes and hotels and businesses, destroying everything in their path. Officials have confirmed this hour at least 36 people have died, but there is concern that number could only continue to grow as the days go on. This fire first began tuesday afternoon, and it quickly exploded because of Hurricane Force winds. We are talking wind gusts of up to 70 miles an hour. In fact across the island there are a total of three wildfires currently burning. In one miraculous story, 14 people, including two children, escaped the flames by running into the ocean. They were rescued eventually by the coastguard. At this hour there are thousands of people who are under mandatory evacuations, including thousands of stranded tourists. All of this, meanwhile, as a very active Search And Rescue effort continues here on The Island Of Maui. Will return if they are new pictures or details. Northern irelands Chief Constable simon byrne has said that dissident republicans claim to be in possession of details of thousands of officers and staff which were released online by mistake. He said that claim had not been verified. Assistant Chief Constable chris todd mr byrne said he was deeply sorry about the data breach. I and the senior team apologise unreservedly for what has happened. You can only imagine the sort of inconceivable horror as people started to realise that maybe a loved one is being put injeopardy by what what they are seeing. Ive personally spoken to officers and staff across the organisation, as you possibly have done yourselves, and realised that there are a range of emotions from people being somewhat pragmatic about. Well, they already know who i am because i am a neighbourhood officer, through to people being anxious, frustrated and really angry. And we need to work carefully with the staff associations and trade unions to give that message of reassurance. And also, in due course, as things start to settle, to remind people that there is a valuable and valid career here and that we are taking steps to protect your personal information. Our correspondent in belfast, charlotte gallagher, has the latest. As the public face of the psni, the Chief Constable, simon byrne, has been under an incredible amount of pressure and scrutiny over this data breach. He cut short his holiday to return to Northern Ireland to deal with the issue. Today, after a meeting of the policing board, he said he was deeply sorry about what had happened, describing the data breach as of an industrial scale. He was asked about claims that the list of 10,000 names of Police Officers and staff may have fallen into the hands of dissident republicans, and he said that the psni had found no evidence to verify those claims. Now, that would have been particularly worrying if it was correct, because dissident republicans are behind the Attempted Murder of a senior detective in Northern Ireland in february. Simon byrne was also asked if any officers had been rehoused yet after their name appeared on this list, and he said no. But however, we do know from the Police Federation of Northern Ireland that hundreds have contacted their managers to say they now feel concerned about their safety. There was a separate data breach as well injuly, which involved a police laptop, radio and a spreadsheet with the names of 200 officers being stolen from a car. Simon byrne said that the radio and the laptop had been remotely wiped, so essentially they would be no use to anyone, but of course the list of those 200 names is now in the public domain, or at least someone has a copy of it. So he has been under a lot of pressure, but he said he wasnt going to walk away from his job, and leadership was about responsibility. Essentially, guiding the police force of Northern Ireland through this very difficult time. When you speak to officers in Northern Ireland, you understand why they are so concerned. As i mentioned there, there was the Attempted Murder of a detective in february, and during the troubles, 300 officers were murdered. Some People Choose to tell only a few people, if any, about what they do for a living. One woman told the bbc that she hadnt even told her children what she does for a job in case they told someone else. Of course, Police Officers know of the dangers and threats that they face in being a Police Officer in Northern Ireland, but what they wouldnt have expected, of course, is for their own employer to reveal their identities online. The latest from belfast. The vss Unity Rocket Ship blasted off from Spaceport America in new mexico and has just separated from the vms eve Carrier Plane, it separated from the plan and ignited its rocket to fire upwards for around 60 seconds. Moments later pictures from inside showed the passengers out of their seats, weakness and looking at the earth. Cameras outside the rocket captured the curvature of the earth. Beautiful pictures sent back in the last few hours and as you can see it landed a short time ago in new mexico. Yes, this is suborbital. If you were heading out to the International Space station, that is about 400 kilometres about the earths surface and you will head out to the International Space station alongside it. This is a very different to that. Here what we are doing is launching the Carrier Plane with the rockets underneath and that rocket will then disconnect from the plane and it will fly vertically and will do a bigger loop basically. A bit like on a roller coaster, you will go up and then you will come back down again. And that is a much shorter duration flight. As you said, they will be back in an hour or so so it is not a Long Duration flight. You will get a few minutes of feeling as though you are weightless. A few minutes of floating around the cabin, a chance to look down at the earth and its curvature. A chance to look out into the blackness of space before returning. It is a much smaller endeavour than going and orbiting the planet. Just to do one of these loops and come back again. Lets turn to the ongoing Migrant Crisis in europe an investigation is continuing after 41 people drowned off the italian island of lampedusa. Their boat had set off from tunisia, and capsized. Four people who survived the disaster were rescued and arrived in lampedusa on wednesday. From rome, sofia bettiza sent this update this is another tragedy in the mediterranean sea. There were only four survivors and they have all been taken to lampedusa. They are still in shock but physically doing well, they only have small cuts and bruises. Now they have all been questioned by the italian authorities, who have opened an investigation into what happened. This morning, we had an update from the authorities, who say that when the boat capsized, everyone who was on board was thrown into the water and were in the water for hours until they spotted a small boat in the distance. So, ten people decided to swim towards that boat but only four of them made it. When they got onto the vessel, they found four bottles of water and half a pack of biscuits. It is because of that, because of those supplies, they managed to stay alive for days before they were finally rescued on tuesday. Unfortunately, shipwrecks like this are becoming more and more common. Since the beginning of the year, more than 2000 people have died trying to reach europe through the mediterranean sea. Migration is a political issue too here in italy. This government, like other governments in europe, was elected on a promise to clamp down on illegal migration but so far this year, nearly 94,000 migrants have reached italy by sea. That is more than double compared to last year. So, despite the tough talk, the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has failed to deliver on her promise. The real problem is that this journey is a very dangerous. According to the un, its by far the most dangerous migrant crossing in the world. And thats because, since 2014, more than 17,000 people died or disappeared in the Central Mediterranean trying to reach europe for a better life. Italy is not the only country dealing with large numbers of migrants. In the us, the mayor of new york says a continuing influx in to the city may cost 12 Billion Dollars over the next three years. Thousands of people have been sent by bus from the Us Mexico Border in texas to cities such as new york, washington and chicago. Its part of a controversial plan by the governor of texas, to reduce the burden on smaller communities along the southern border. Cbs news Correspondentjarred Hill has more from new york. The city are saying that there are about 57,000 Asylum Seekers here in new york city. They have opened nearly 200 shelters to house them, which is reportedly costing about 400 american dollars per family per night. One of the things that, at this point, is becoming increasingly more of an issue within the city is school year starts. About 30 of the migrants are said to be School Age Children and so the city is trying to figure out not only where they should go on a physical level, but putting them in places where there are teachers who speak both english as well as usually spanish, to be able to help with their education. The mayor is saying there is a need for more federal support here. Hes saying that, over the course of, as you mentioned, three years, new york is expected to spend 12 billion helping migrants and eric adams, the mayor, says that will cut into the amount of money available for other city resources, whether that is resources for low income new yorkers orjust things like trash pick up. He also wants the white house to expedite some Work Authorisations here. Because these Asylum Seekers cannot legally work, essentially they are just spending time in and around the shelters and he says a lot of them are coming here wanting to go to work. As the sex pistols reached fame in the 70s and became the face of british punk, so did the artwork of their songs as the one for God Save The Queen which caused backlash at that time, but is seen now as a picture that defined an era.
