Per cent of the town was gone in what he said was probably the us states largest ever natural disaster. Some properties seem to have been left untouched by the flames whilst others just metres away have been completely destroyed. Locals, who have been there, left to just look at what they have lost, they say there were no warning sirens to alert them as the flames moved towards their homes. Authorities say it will take many years and billions of dollars to repair the damage caused by the wildfires, which firefighters are still battling to contain. Some of the people who managed to escape from the flames gathered in a safe parking lot to spend the night together. They have been describing what they witnessed. All i could take with me, my wife, my son, my car. Fire filled up the parking lot. Everything. As we were leaving, i had triple layers of clothes. Everything was red. We saw the smoke finally. By the time we saw the smoke finally. By the time we got in the house it was like the time we got in the house it was like a the time we got in the house it was like a minute or two, we sew was like a minute or two, we saw the was like a minute or two, we saw the black smoke coming into our house. Saw the black smoke coming into our house, we had to run out, grab our house, we had to run out, grab whatever we could, and run grab whatever we could, and run we grab whatever we could, and run. We got in the car and we could run. We got in the car and we could see run. We got in the car and we could see the flames from our neighbours house, burning already we have heard other survivors describe how theyjumped into the sea to escape the flames. To give you a sense of that i wanted to show you these pictures. They were filmed from a boat as it sailed away from lahaina looking back at the shore. You can see the huge amount of smoke and flames on the harbour. You can understand why some people decided to take the risk and jump into the sea and Tread Waterfor hours. The coastguard said that around 50 people were rescued from the water. A Relief Operation is under way to help the residents many makeshift shelters have been set up with queues of traffic and people heading towards them so they at least have some shelter. You can see from these Pictures Matresses have been brought in for people to sleep on. This photo taken at the war War Memorial Stadium shelter in maui, a Makeshift Noticeboard has been set up. A reminder hundreds of people are still missing. Well one of the most famous residents of maui island is Oprah Winfrey and shes been meeting residents, and helping with the relief effort. Our reporter on the island, max matza, caught up with her. It isa it is a little overwhelming. Iamso i am so pleased to have so many people supporting and bringing what they can. I came earlier to see what people needed, then went shopping, often you make donations of clothes, that is not what people need, i got shampoo, sheets. As we have seen, the Community On Maui is coming together to provide each other with aid. Chelsea davis, from the bbc s us partner cbs, is on the island and joined a convoy that went into west maui and sent us this report. The community of maui is coming together, the challenge is getting these goods to the people. Power lines are still down, it is difficult getting access to people who need it the most. Escorted by a Police Officer i was part of a convoy that went into maui on thursday. We passed out food, gas, clothes, other goods. Irate we passed out food, gas, clothes, other goods. We have food, clothes, other goods. We have food. Water. Clothes, other goods. We have food, water, toilet clothes, other goods. We have food, water, toilet paper, clothes, other goods. Food, as, fill trash bags with ice. Food, gas. Water. Fill trash bags with ice. Food, gas, water, clothes. Fill trash bags with ice. Food, gas, water, clothes. People i fill trash bags with ice. Food, i gas, water, clothes. People do not have anything. Restaurant owners and workers are serving free food to countless people waiting in line. We need formula, ice, diapers, water, food. I have a four month old and a two year old. A major challenge is getting these goods to the people who are still stranded in lahaina. With roads blocked off it is difficult getting to the most vulnerable in maui right now. President biden has issued a major disaster declaration, that releases fundus for some of the recovery effort. Online, we have some of the latest videos, look at these pictures taken by passengers from a Plane Landing in hawaii. You can see the devastating spread of the fire is. Just to remind you, the fires so far have killed at least 55 people, the expectation is that that number will rise. Many hundreds more are said to be missing on maui, there are also fires on big island. The pictures you are seeing the air is of a famous tree, lots of tourists go to lahaina to see these trees, these have also been hit by the fires. We have the latest reaction on the live page. Now, earlier this week we brought you the tragic news that 41 migrants had died in a shipwreck off the coast of italy. Today came new figures suggesting that the number of people facing a similar journey is on the rise. The data from the eu s Border Agency frontex suggests that the number crossing illegally into the European Union so far this year is 13 higher than the same period in 2022. More than 176,000 Illegal Migrants have reached europe so far in 2023. Straight to rome. Sofia bettiza is there for us. To cut data. Why is the figure 13 higher this year . These new figures show as that many more migrants have reached europe this year compared to last year. The number of people caught making a regular Border Crossings into the eu have never been this high since 2016. Most people who try to get to europe are taking what is known as the Central Mediterranean route, crossing the Mediterranean Sea from north africa to italy. Many of them are coming from egypt, guinea, the ivory coast, often fleeing war and persecution. We are seeing a new and dangerous trend of these people using very small low quality metal boats. These boats often break during the journey, boats. These boats often break during thejourney, and it is easy for them to capsize. That is exactly what happened earlier this week in italy. A small metal boat that was carrying 45 people capsized because of a wave near sicily. 41 people died as a result. Frontex is seeing that is like what we saw earlier this week, it will not stop people getting to europe, according to Frontex Thatis to europe, according to frontex that is fierce competition between various criminal groups in tunisia and libya, because of that People Smugglers are offering much lower prices to people who want to try and make the journey to get to europe. In some ways it is becoming cheaper, is that what frontex is seeing, for some of these migrants to try and make the crossing . How much are they paying . We know that these prices vary, it is hard to track these things down, because the whole thing is illegal. But frontex is seeing there are so many criminal groups competing with each other now that the prices forjourneys like the one from north africa to italy are going down. What the eu is trying to do, they have signed a deal with tunisia last month, tunisia has become the main Departure Point for people that want to try and get to europe. The deal pledges more than 100 million euros, aimed at cracking down on People Smugglers, strengthening eu borders, working on policies to send migrants back. But if you take italy, so far this year, nearly 94,000 people have reached this country by boat. That is more than doubled compared to last year. We are seeing that people keep coming, despite the deal signed between eu and tunisia and other policies that italy has implemented. The real issue here is that this is a very dangerous journey, here is that this is a very dangerousjourney, the here is that this is a very dangerous journey, the fear is that more people could die trying to reach europe. Thank you. Well, the uk is of course also struggling with significant numbers of migrant arrivals. The government says 755 people were detected crossing the channel in small boats yesterday thats the highest daily number so far this year. The figure confirms the total number of people arriving in boats since 2018 has passed 100,000. Our correspondent in Dover Simonjones says the 100,000 figure is an unwelcome milestone for the government. The first boat had 60 or 70 people on board, the second boat had even more, that will take the figure for the past five years where these crossings have been taking place to well over 100,000. Hundreds of people arrived yesterday. It was the first candy we have had out on the channel for several weeks. Until then it has been wet and windy weather for this time of year. It shows how weather dependent this is. For a government that has pledged to stop the boats it is an unwelcome milestone. This can be an extremely dangerous crossing. Yesterday 70 people had to be hauled from the water, for lifeboats went out to help rescue those people they are after their boat started to sink, the french authorities, regarding another boat carrying eight people that got stuck by a sand bag, initially the eight people on board that port refused to be rescued because they said they to get to uk what is to be picked up by the border force or lifeboat and brought here to dover. But after several hours when the report was clearly going nowhere and the situation was becoming more dangerous they did agree to be back to france. But it shows how dangerous these crossings can be. But these crosses continue pretty much every time we see calm weather out there on the channel. Lets get more now on the politics of managing migration with our Political Correspondent shelley phelps. One of rishi sunak s key Policy Pledges was to stop the boats. How is the governments overall strategy working out . Todays figures are an unwelcome milestone for the prime minister. Rishi sunak has made stopping the boats one hot as five pledges, he thinks this will be a big issue at the next general election. The government thinks that this is an area that labour is weak on. In terms of policies to try and tackle this issue, the government says it wants to cut the cost of housing Asylum Seekers and hotels, it says that costs around £6 million per day, so we have the barge policy, that became operational this week, bibby stockholm, people are now being housed on the hour, not as many as they would like yet. The illegal migration bill, the government has got that through the commons after a back and forth with the house of lords. There is also the policy of deporting some Asylum Seekers to the lander whilst their claims are processed. That is currently stuck in the courts. It is a Government Policy on getting down that legacy Asylum Backlog of cases. There has been some success in doing that, government insisting they will meet their target. But the big question through all of this is will this be enough to deter people from Making Thatjourney across the channel . Labour see that the governments policies are headline chasing, they see are headline chasing, they see a lot of this is unworkable, they say they would continue to house Asylum Seekers on barges in the short term. There is not a huge gap in terms of policy between the two parties on this, partly i think because labour want to be cautious, not wanting to allow a gap to emerge in the run up to the next general election. Thank you. Well, in myanmar, the bodies of 23 rohingyas have been recovered off Rakhine State after their boat sank as they tried to reach malaysia. Dozens of others are missing. Survivors said theyd each paid Smugglers Thousands of dollars. 0ur asia regional editor, william leonardo, told us why the rohingyas were fleeing the country. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims tried to make the journey. Normally crossings between october and may, when conditions are better. In 2017 the fled persecution in Rakhine State by the burmese army. Conditions in these camps are terrible, little prospect of people going back to myanmar, thatis people going back to myanmar, that is what is causing many to leave on these boats. Some are leaving from Rakhine State itself. Myanmar has been wracked by internal conflict since the coup they are two years ago. Around the world and across the uk. This is bbc news. Many doctors say they are being recruited to places like australia, canada, they are getting adverts for recruitment every day and are starting to wonder why they are staying in the uk to serve at all in the hospitals here. When you look at Strike Action across all of england, 800,000 appointments are estimated to have been rescheduled since december. Having a big knock on impact on two patients as well. Two real life examples ofJunior Doctors. This dr isjust ofJunior Doctors. This dr is just finishing ofJunior Doctors. He is paid a basic wage ofjust over £14 per hour. But there are extra payments to come at night shifts and weekends, which are compulsory, he has no choice in doing those. His full take home pay after taxes, deductions, student loan, was just over £2000. It would bring his annual salary tojust just over £2000. It would bring his annual salary to just about £37,000, including those extra payments. He says he is now looking to work abroad for a while, possibly in australia. I always wanted to do that even in medical school. What has changed recently as i am not confident that they pay here is going to improve as much as i would like it to. If that isnt the case, i would strongly consider staying in australia. Roberts is just consider staying in australia. Roberts isjust finishing his roberts is just finishing his first Roberts Isjust finishing his first year as a junior dr. As doctors get more skilled and experienced they can move at these pay bands. She was Working Full Time her salary would be roughly £69,000. She says for her this is notjust a dispute about wages but about wider working conditions. I have seen a decline in the morale, the working environment, the safety of our working environment, our working environment, our working conditions. This is not something that i can see maybe never use
