With an estimated 500,000 killed or injured, tonight we uncover the human cost of the war in ukraine. In the second film of our defence editors trilogy from the front line in ukraine, mark hears from the families of those who fought in the 24th brigade. What will the Broadcasting Watchdog do about this . We dont need these sort of feminist 4. 0. They re pathetic, embarrassing. Whod want to shag that . Well ask the chair of parliaments women and Equalities Committee caroline nokes, Former Sun Editor Now Podcaster David Yelland, and political commentator adam boulton how much of a test those sexist comments on gb news are for 0fcom. And after this programmes year long investigation into University Hospitals birmingham, an independent report today finds half of the staff felt bullied or harrassed due to a Toxic Culture at the trust. What did it do to them . Breakdowns, long term sick leave, self harm. Suicide attempts. Good evening. This weeks news that germany is holding back long range missiles from ukraine or that america has voted through billions more in funding has become a part of a familiar cycle of reporting to do with president zelensky s backers and whether their commitment will falter. But even more central to the question of whether the war will go on and on, is the atitudes of ukrainians themselves and whether theyre willing to fight on. For the second of our newsnight special reports on the 24th brigade, mark urban has been talking to members of the units families, far from the front in Western Ukraine. They speak frankly about loved ones lost, captured, or wounded, and how they cope with the uncertainty of not knowing how or when it will end. Solemn chanting this is how the people of yavoriv showed their grief for one of their lost sons. Its a garrison town, almost as far west as you can go in ukraine, almost as far from the front as its possible to be. And yet the raw emotion of this war and its consequences could not be more stark. The family of volodymyr, an Army Intelligence officer, were honoured by their community no matter that he died soon after visiting the front, rather than falling in combat. Dozens of its sons have been killed in battle since the russian invasion and they mostly belong to the brigade based here before this all began and in which volodymyr started his army career. Pretty much every house in this street in yavoriv has been affected by the war and service with the 24th brigade. The soldier killed back there, another seriously wounded. In this house, three members of the family are serving at the front. Another lightly wounded, two houses on. And in this place where im going, her husband is missing in action. Lydia works in the brigade canteen. Her husband, serhii, has been missing since march 2022. The idea that hes not coming back is too much to bear. Do you have any hope in this situation or have you lost hope now of seeing him again . Serhiis comrades in the 24th brigade suggested he may have been captured by the russians, but subsequent evidence pointed towards him having died. For the family of volodymyr, carried to the cemetery on the outskirts of yavoriv, there is at least the painful certainty of knowing what happened and having a place to grieve. And, being a colonel, he was given a full military sendoff. But in the National Crisis its faced here since the full invasion began, the Ukrainian State has sometimes been found wanting. This protest a year ago in lviv, the main city of Western Ukraine, was held by military families seeking answers. Wheres my son . , read one poster. Bring our defenders back from captivity says another. Most of these relatives were from the 24th brigade. The soldiers were people lost in the maelstrom of war with the russians indifferent and their own authorities unable, back then at least, to answer the pleas of hundreds of families. Vita bahrii lives not far from lviv with her son. Her husband, sviatoslav, is another one of the missing. She showed me some of the letters shes written about his case. As the months have passed, the idea of a rapid peace dealfaded and small prisoner swaps been and gone, her hopes of Seeing Sviatoslav again soon have evaporated. Did soldiers from the unit get released . Were they able to tell you how he was, to update you on what was happening . What do you ask now of the authorities . Vita at least knows that sviatoslav is still alive. This image was released by his russian captors, but nobody can say when he might come home. In yavoriv theres a memorial to the 24th brigade. When you talk to people about the total price paid by the 24th brigade in this war, its hard to get a concrete answer. Its actually against the law here to reveal the Casualty Figures for particular units in the army. But taking a close interest in the brigade as we have, weve picked up clues. Their footage of a Ceremony In Lviv last month saw relatives of the 24th s dead presented with a special decoration, the heros cross. Theyre consecutively numbered in the high 300s. Some have gone to those who fell before last years invasion, but most, perhaps 300, commemorate those killed in the last 18 months. And as the war has gone on, the original cadre from Western Ukraine has been replaced by thousands of recruits from all over. Its a story mirrored nationally as the country mobilized. Its clear that the 24th brigade suffered badly in the early weeks of the war, fighting for an eastern town called popasna. Thats where vita and lydias husbands went missing. This russian footage shows fighters from the wagner Group Pushing through that town, Clearing Buildings and capturing ukrainians. Even in an army sensitive about revealing its setbacks, survivors paint a picture of an awful struggle while attention and resources focused on the defence of kyiv. In this hospital in lviv, they put together the maimed from many different battles and units. When we visited, those being treated were casualties of this summers fighting in the south and east of ukraine. This is one of ukraines main centres for war wounded. Whats the spirit like among the soldiers . Is it hard for them to accept that maybe they cant fight on . Do you have to tell them that . A lot of soldiers that even in that cases, when we even didnt have a possibility to save their extremities or limb, after the amputees, they take a prosthesis and they want to get back to the front line to start fighting again. And, from our experience, we operate on a lot of soldiers from the Ukrainian Special forces, its elite forces of ukraine, also the snipers. And they already get back to the front line, even without their leg. Given the pain and trauma that these men have been through, it was remarkable to see the upbeat way this session was run. Among the patients, teasing and banter. Thoughts, too, about whether they might play any further part in the war and how theirfamilies might treat them. Do you have the support of your family to go back or do they try to persuade you maybe not to go back to the front . And the long nature of this war, along with its losses and setbacks, are also discussed here as each man reflects on the price of fighting on. Mykhailo lost his leg in a minefield as his unit tried to push forward in this summers counter offensive. If its possible, if you could influence the next few months, how would you like the next few months to go . What would you like to achieve . You so how do you maintain spirit back home when nobody knows when the war will end, the pows come home and the wounded not face the prospect of going back to action . But the price has been so, so high. This cemetery on the outskirts of lviv is one of the many where the 24th s fallen have been laid to rest. We counted dozens adorned with the brigade s emblem among the 2,000 plus graves here. Natalia nezhura visits, often bringing Fresh Flowers to her brother, andrii. Shes wracked with regret that all of her attempts to save him failed. Like so many ukrainians, natalia has been hardened by the pain and loss of the last 18 months. But asking her how the war ends, i was shocked by the answer. Sirens. As we filmed, sirens warned of another possible strike on lviv. Thats one more reason why so many ukrainians have concluded there can be no rest for living or dead until the war is won. Mark urban, produced by Louis Harris White and filmed byjon hughes. Former actor turned tv presenter and politician laurence fox regularly complains about being cancelled. Today hes been cancelled by the tv channel that declares itself the home of free speech, the network he presents a weekly show on gb news. Its after he said on air last night that he wouldnt like to climb in bed with a female journalist, ava evans, whose views he disagreed with. She said she was physcially sick by what he said, adding that it felt like she was just a vehicle for content. Laurence fox made his misogynistic comments on presenter dan wootton s show. Mr wootton later apologised but it wasnt enough to stop him being suspended too. Gb news has also said sorry and is investigating, which presumably wont take long because its all out there in a clip. So what will the Broadcasting Regulator 0fcom do . Does this represent a crisis for the Business Model of gb news . Does it help the Business Model . And what does all this tell us about the Broadcasting Environment in britain in 2023 . Well ask the chair of parliaments women and Equalities Committee caroline nokes, former editor of the sun and now podcast host David Yelland and broadcaster adam boulton in a moment. First simas here with the story. It started off with this on bbc twos Politics Live Programme yesterday afternoon. I think that it feeds into the culture war a little bit, this minister for men argument. In my mind i think there should be a minister for Mental Health, which would be all encompassing and i think, you know, a lot of ministers kind of band it about to sort of. Im sorry, but make an enemy out of women. The journalist there, ava evans from politich0e, saying calls for a ministerfor men feeds into the culture war. And it was those remarks that led to laurence fox saying what he did on the Dan Wootton Show on gb news yesterday evening. Show me a single self respecting man that would like to climb into bed with that woman ever. Ever, who wasnt an incel. Who wasnt a cucked little incel. That little woman has been fed spoon fed oppression day after day after day after day. We dont need these sorts of feminist 4. 0. They are pathetic and embarrassing. Whod want to shag that . Those comments triggered condemnation from many, including piers morgan, labour mp dawn butler and Scottish First minister humza yousaf. Although ava later said her comments had been a little rash, she said his remarks had made her feel physically sick. She spoke Onjeremy Vine earlier. Im really hurt by it, i am. Yeah. Im shocked by it, actually. Im shocked that it went out and im shocked at. Actually, do you know, this is the sort of talk that you worry that men have about you when youre not in the room. Dan wootton apologised for laughing when laurence fox made those remarks, while laurence fox tweeted he stood by every single word. He said, its called free speech. I realise that the new woke world is low on laughter and high on offence, but its still worth trying to find the lighter moments in this joyless new cancel culture which has been created for us. This morning he was suspended by gb news, with the broadcaster saying his comments were totally unacceptable, and has since apologised to ava. Later today, dan wootton was also suspended from the Network Whilst it investigates what happened. 0fcom is the uks Communications Regulator and has a statutory duty to protect the public from unjustified offensive content. It says its received a number of complaints which its assessing against its broadcasting rules. So what exactly are those rules . Well, weve delved into the guidelines and they make clear that generally accepted standards must be applied to the contents of television and Radio Services and bbc on demand Programme Service rules, so as to provide adequate protection for members of the public from the inclusion in such services of harmful and or offensive material. They go on to say. 0fcom would not tell us which sections of its code it was looking at in relation to what was said on gb news, but in a statement it told us. Now its up to the regulator to decide whether its Code Of Conduct has been breached and whether a penalty is necessary. We did ask for an interview with the boss of gb news, he said he couldnt come on until hed completed the investigation. To talk about all of this lets speak to conservative mp caroline nokes, who is chair of parliaments women and Equalities Committee, David Yelland, co host of the bbc sounds podcast when it hits the fan, and adam boulton, broadcaster and political commentator. Welcome, all. Let me ask you all how you reacted when you watch the clip of laurence fox and dan wootton . I thought it was absolutely abhorrent. Gb news purports to be a serious News Broadcaster yet here you have two men belittling, demeaning, seeking to humiliate a female journalist. 0ne seeking to humiliate a female journalist. One of them making a truly offensive comments and the other laughing about it, and then laughing afterwards in that exchange of Text Messages we have never seen published. Clearly gb news has taken action, we wait to see if it sticks. Suspended, i note, not dismissed. Should they be dismissed . It is easy for me to say yes, i was appalled by it. I was appalled by a News Channel Broadcasting such blatantly misogynistic, outdated, hideous attitudes which are actually play play into the cultural misogyny that the incels to which laurence fox referred to play up to to justify appalling conduct, so i hope 0fcom can conclude its investigation possible. I can conclude its investigation ossible. , . , possible. I wouldnt have watched it until it was drawn possible. I wouldnt have watched it until it was drawn attention possible.
