Shortly we are at war and we will win. Shortly after, at 12 30pm, we hear from the palestinian president mahmoud abbas. He says his people have a right to defend themselves against what he calls settlers and occupation troops. As the death toll rises throughout the day, theres lots of international reaction, including from western leaders such as Prime Minister rishi sunak. He says, im shocked by this mornings attacks by Hamas Terrorists against israeli citizens. He says, israel has an absolute right to defend itself. We also hearfrom has an absolute right to defend itself. We also hear from the french president emmanuel macron. He strongly condemns what he calls the current Terrorist Attacks against israel and expresses his full solidarity with the victims and their loved ones. We hearfrom president joe biden, who says, israel has a right to defend itself and its people. More and more videos are emerging throughout the day. We see there are more casualties and the hospitals are getting overwhelmed in israel. Hamas also claims it has captured israeli soldiers, including in a city and a kibbutz. At 11 30pm on saturday, in a televised speech, israeli pm Benjamin Netanyahu says, the attacks have never been seen before in his country. He warned he would take mighty vengeance for what he described as a black day. In the early hours of sunday morning, the israeli army tells residents in the gaza strip to shelter. This is because of strikes which happened overnight. We can see here some of the dramatic footage. The next morning, we see what the damage has been. We see a mosque has completely collapsed in gaza. Several buildings have completely destroyed. At around 7 30am on sunday, 11 becomes involved. This footage here is of some of the strikes launched by militant Group Hezbollah which fired missiles into three Israeli Military positions. The Israeli Military then launched strikes back to leben on. On sunday, we saw air strikes continuing in gaza, as israel desperately tries to regain control. The Un Security Council has been meeting in new york, behind closed doors. The permanent representative of israel to the United Nations, gilad erdan, has spoken to the media. The past days have been devastating for each and every israeli. Israels suffered an unprecedented attack and the number of casualties is catastrophic. Truly unfathomable. Over the past two days, following hamas s Surprise Attack on israel, my country has suffered hundreds of fatalities. Yesterday, in the Early Morning of the Jewish Sabbath and on a jewish holiday savage Hamas Terrorists fired thousands of rockets into israel. But this was only the beginning. As rockets rained down indiscriminately upon israeli towns and cities, hundreds of Hamas Terrorists infiltrated israel and began a barbaric pogrom. A barbaric pogrom of unparalleled magnitude. Ruthless terrorists gunned down innocent israeli civilians in the streets, murdering anything that moved. As the Security Council prepares to meet today, israel has one sole demand hamas s war crimes must be unequivocally condemned. This unimaginable atrocity must be condemned. Israel must be given steadfast support to defend ourselves, to defend the free world. Israel will not accept any false, false, immoral comparisons between a savage terror group that targets innocents and the Democratic State of israel, this is not the comparison that the un or the Security Council can do. There is no reconciling with genocidal terrorists. Israel will exact a heavy price on hamas, so that what we witnessed will never repeat itself. Also, the permanent observer of palestine to the United Nations gave his speech earlier. We know only too well that the messages about israels right to defend itself will be interpreted by israel as licence to kill. To pursue on the very path that led us here. 370, and the number is rising by the moment, of palestinians that have been killed already in one day, including children, some barely a few months old. Entire families were killed in their sleep. Will this bring security . Will this advance peace . Where is the International Protection the Palestinian People is entitled to when the occupying power violates International Law and harms those it is obliged to protect . Arent palestinians lives worth saving . The Palestinian Civilians killed, the palestinian children killed in occupied palestine could have been spared. Isnt that a moral and legal obligation and a contribution to peace . Why nothing is done when those killed are palestinians . We need to think hard of what logic we want to see prevail here. If this is about vengeance, then many palestinians will feel they have much to avenge. If this is about peace, then the way to it is not through further entrenching oppression and occupation, but by ending it. You cannot say nothing justifies Killing Israelis and then provide justification for killing palestinians. We are not sub humans. The Un Security Council has been meeting in new york, behind closed doors. According to a un official, pleaded with countries able to do so to exert diplomatic efforts to try to restore calm in the region. He said he has been in touch with both parties and that he is urging maximum restraint. Council members didnt even attempt to reach a statement on this unprecedented attack. But according to one diplomat, there was a real sense that this was a Game Changing moment. In fact, the uae s ambassador came out and told reporters the briefing had been sobering and that there was a concern about regional spill over and inflammation, and that the concern at the moment, the priority is about the safety of civilians. And also the unconditional release of hostages. 0n the issue of resuming peace talks, the two state solution, she said there was a real understanding that that was needed to prevent further violence, but that the point to resume talks havent arrived quite yet. Before this briefing or consultation i should say got under way, we heard from both the israeli and palestinian ambassadors to the un. The israeli ambassador said this was israels 9 11, and he showed Graphic Photos of civilians being dragged off into gaza. He said those images would be seared in his mind. The Palestinian New un ambassador said that he would be calling for an Emergency Meeting of the League Of Arab States in the coming days in cairo. He urged the Security Council to try to address the root causes of this conflict, and to end the Israeli Occupation of palestinian territories. He said that was the only way to ensure peace in the future. ~. ,. ,. , future. We have been hearing from World Leaders future. We have been hearing from World Leaders as future. Now is not a time for equivocation and i am unequivocal. Hamas and the people who Support Hamas are fully responsible for this appalling act of terror, for the murder of civilians and the kidnapping of innocent people including children. I have spoken with Prime Minister netanyahu to assure him of the uks steadfast support as israel defends itself against these appalling attacks. We will do everything we can to help. Terrorism will not prevail. This is a dangerous and fast living situation and i know there are families anxious about their loved ones. The Foreign Office and the government here is in close contact with our israeli counterparts to establish the status of any british nationals on the ground. In the meantime, people should follow all the Foreign Office advice and the advice from the israelis on the ground, and contact the Foreign Office if you have any concerns or need any assistance. My colleague Maryam Moshiri spoke with amit parpara from tel aviv. Hes a friend of noa argamani, the israeli woman who was abducted by hamas fighters on the motorbike. She was at that Music Festival with her boyfriend avinatan 0r. Both her and her boyfriend are missing. Mr parpara told maryam about his last contact with noa. My First Contact with noa was around 6. 30, when the missiles started. There were missiles all over israel. Thats what woke us up, all of us. And then we started messaging all the people that are still now in the Music Festival, which happens to be all morning. What did she say in those messages . Were seeing them now, but theyre obviously in hebrew. Can you explain what shes saying to you . Yes, shes sending a live location and asking for someone to save her, save her boyfriend. She was hiding in a hole near the festival. They were searching for some place to hide because they didnt have any car, thats also what she wrote, she doesnt have any car. And they came in a group, i guess. So they hid when the terrorists came. At around 8. 30 to 9. 00, the terrorists broke through the gaza borders and they came in, thats when we started hearing about the horrors going on in the festival. And thats when we started to really get nervous about noa and her boyfriend. Of course, for other people as well that are still missing. And around 8. 30 was the last message that i got from her, saying that she doesnt have any car. I tried to tell her to stay low. Try to maybe contact the police and the military, so that theyll know their location. Maybe theyll find them. About half an hour after, i found that video that was seen here before of her on a motorcycle, taken away from her boyfriend, avi natan. You can see clearly the terror going into the gaza strip. You must be really, really worried, amit. Yeah. Really. Really bad. You know, this is the largest event that we can remember in our lifetime. Weve been through a few operations, but a Surprise Attack of this scale and magnitude on israel, i cannot recall. The exact number of people who were kidnapped are yet to be exact. That means we dont know, but maybe near 100. They are most of them civilians. Young people, friends, children, women, elderly that were kidnapped from their homes and the Music Festival. So its notjust about what happened to noa and avi natan, its about everyone that is kidnapped right there to gaza at this time, which hasnt been Something Like this in the whole history. Amit, what have the government or officials been telling you about their ongoing search, or how theyre going to try and get these hostages back . There was no official contact from the government with us. That contacted noas family and avi natan s family. There has been no official contact that something is ongoing. And thats most of our purpose here, is to make use of the network, to understand that a quick force might have a chance to get them out safely right now. Time is of the essence, and this is our main priority right now, getting the people back home safely as soon as possible, before its too late. All of the acting up that is now happening is from civilians. Private groups that are combined together to help the people get back together. And this is the most, theres no official contact and its all what we do. We right now have authorities in the government that we are in contact with to help find all of the people that are kidnapped. But it has to happen now. And someone can still save the situation. We must act fast and with the back up from other nations. This reality cannot be tolerated in any other country. Amit, what do you think has happened to noa . I hope to think that shes waiting. Waiting with other people, waiting for her to be saved. She was taken to the gaza strip. We hope that its not too late until they separate them, or hide them in other places. We really dont know. Theres no official update. Theres no videos, nothing that we can maybe get a leak or something. Its just us waiting and hoping, really hoping and praying that everything is good, that she will come back home safely, her and her boyfriend and everyone that is in captivity now. Dr laura james is a senior middle east analyst at the geopolitical Analysis Firm 0xford analytica. She gave her analysis on hamass strategy. The tactic i think has been to get these hostages as bargaining chips. There are certain things hamas has achieved which cant be undone. Firstly, they have shown themselves as the prime mover here. They have launched a devastating attack that israel didnt expect, that nobody thought was possible. Hamas has been taking all the credit for this, in terms of competition for leadership of the Palestinian People, leadership of the resistance against israel, hamas has made a very strong move. And now they have the hostages, so whether they want to go for using them in the immediate conflict or using them as a Negotiating Tool going forward, they have those tools, and i simply dont see how israel could rescue 100 hostages in this gaza situation. And israel takes hostages very seriously. 0nce captured soldier was once exchanged for 1000 palestinian prisoners. One captured soldier. So the numbers are enormous. Most arab countries that have good ties with the us and would like to improve ties with israel would have to deal with popular feeling that is pro palestinian. Countries like egypt and qatar are mobilizing and talking to hamas and trying to change hamass incentives. They have back channels to go through to israel and they are trying to see how this can be turned back into a negotiating situation. So that will be happening, but at the same time, israel has not begun what it is going to do as a Military Operation yet. We have only seen the very beginnings of what israel is going to do. And hamas certainly has plans for how things are going to proceed from here. The question is also perhaps what is going to happen in lebanon with hezbollah, and how long the west bank can stay relatively quiet. Pl. The west bank can stay relatively cuiet. ,. , a short while ago, i spoke to jason lee, Country Director at Save The Children palestine.
