Turkey withdrew last week and will co host euro 32 with italy. Good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. Its the fourth day of this war. Israel says it has now recovered the bodies of 1500 hamas fighters who managed to break through israels border with the gaza strip on saturday, to launch a bloody assault. Israeli forces are now said to have reclaimed control of that area. This is the seen live in the gaza strip. The city, the territory continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. Continues to be rocked by israeli airstrikes. Israel continues to be rocked by israeli air strikes. Israel has also ordered air strikes. Israel has also ordered a complete siege of the territory, depriving palestinians of essential Services Including water, electricity, food and fuel. The Palestinian Authority say that so far, 770 palestinians have been killed so far. Israel says 900 of its citizens have been killed. Last night, the israeli Prime Minister, benjamin netanyahu, warned that israels air strikes were just the beginning of its operations. Hamas, which is designated as a Terrorist Organisation by many western governments, including the united kingdom, also had a warning, saying it would kill some of the israeli hostages it is holding if the israeli governor does not give enough prior warning of its attacks on civilian homes. In ourfirst report, lets take a look at the latest developments in israel and the gaza strip, with this report from nick beake. The morning brought fresh strikes on gaza. Palestinian communities pounded in a hail of rockets. Israel says it hit more than 200 hamas targets, those behind the weekends deadly attack. But amid the rubble, yet more civilians. Injured and killed. Translation this is true terrorism. Families here live in peace and dont have anything to do with this. What happened was revenge. The Israeli Military released footage of its aerial assault. It says hamass actions have changed everything and that any building in the gaza strip with a hamas militant inside is now a target. Israel is at war. We didnt want this war. It was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way. But though israel didnt start this war, israel will finish it. In the south of israel, the military says it has now regained control of areas where hamas gunmen went on the rampage, and Israeli Forces are now gathering outside gaza in anticipation of a major ground offensive. Here injerusalem the government says the strength of its retaliation will reshape the middle east. But its response is being complicated because it is feared up to 150 israelis are being held hostage in gaza, with hamas threatening to kill them. Video has emerged of the moment on saturday morning this mother was kidnapped by hamas fighters. Shiri Silverman Bibas was taken away with her two sons. This photograph shows her bloodied husband being bundled away separately. Taken by terrorists, its like every persons worst nightmare. We made contact with 0fri. Its her brother and his family in the footage, now being held captive. What do you think the Israeli Government should do to try and rescue them . I dont want to say send all the soldiers there, because i dont want anyone to die. Soldiers go inside gaza, its going to cost a lot of lives. The government has to step in and start negotiating with them and try to think that they are safe, that they are more valuable to the hamas alive than dead, and that is why they will keep them alive. That is my hope. The bodies of more israelis are being taken away for burial. This is a Small Community where more than 100 were killed. Not far away in gaza, the bloodied body armour of two palestinian journalists was carried through the streets alongside their bodies. Israel has urged civilians to leave their homes here as the onslaught continues, but there are limited options to seek safety or find a way out. Nick beake, bbc news, jerusalem. Lets bring our coverage right up to date. In a moment well speak to our correspondent anna foster who is in sderot. First, lets go inside the gaza strip. My colleague Rushdi Aboualouf is there now. Yes, this is true, especially in this part of the city, especially in this part of the city, considered as the safe haven for most of the people of gaza for the last 17 years. Around seven oclock last 17 years. Around seven oclock last night, the israeli started bombing heavily the neighbourhood, which is located south west of gaza, 200 air strikes, targeting several buildings. Most of the hamas run government buildings are located there. Some of the Telecommunication Company headquarters are there. They were all flattened to the ground. When they start to hit the place, many of the residential buildings were effected and destroyed. I was in one of those buildings, with around 20 families, with my family. We spent seven hours without electricity, without water and without access to the internet. The whole building was shaking, the sound of bombing was terrifying, kids were screaming. People were appealing. I saw people fleeing from their home, and walking, in this situation, to the nearby hospital. Living in this neighbourhood for the last ten years, what surprised me is the scale of destruction i saw this morning. I had a chance to drive around, and ifilmed some of morning. I had a chance to drive around, and i filmed some of the footage while driving. That shows the intensity of the shelling, and how the destruction in this neighbourhood is blocking the main road, there is debris everywhere, glass shattered, cars damaged. This specific area has never seen that in the last 17 years. Specific area has never seen that in the last 17 years. Now in daytime is the last 17 years. So, cross the gaza strip. The last one was in the gaza strip. The last one was in the north, where two people were reported to be killed. So now the death toll is close to 800 people, and about 4000 people are injured. Hospitals are desperately needed for help, as the Health Minister issues a statement saying we are running out of medicine, we are running out of fuel to run the generators, and we will not be able to provide the services that most patients need very soon. All of the signs are that israel is preparing for a Ground Invasion. Frank gardner looks at what could happen next. Israels Security Cabinet has been meeting to discuss its next steps. Prime minister netanyahu is under huge pressure to deal a decisive blow to hamas, to eliminate its leadership and stop the attacks on his country. One option being considered is a Ground Invasion of gaza. But going into gaza, a place under siege and boiling with hostility to israel, is fraught with risks. Hamas would almost certainly call on the general population to resist. Casualties would be huge, both palestinian and israeli. And israels military advantage over hamas would be blunted. Gazas teeming streets are no place for tanks. They would be highly vulnerable to ambush, as would israeli infantry. The gunmen of hamas know their citys backstreets, bunkers and tunnels far better than outsiders do. Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth. 2. 3 Million People crammed into a narrow coastal strip pretty much the size of the isle of wight. Now, access is normally controlled by israel on three sides and egypt to the south. You can see in green here the Border Crossing points. But within its borders its been run by hamas since they took power in 2007. And right now hamas holds a key weapon israeli hostages, over 100 of them. Almost certainly distributed in secret hiding places, Underground Internals and cellars, rescuing them all simultaneously will be almost impossible. Israel has rarely faced such a difficult dilemmas in what to do next. Frank gardner, bbc news. The leaders of the uk, us, france, germany and italy have jointly released a statement condemning hamas for its attacks on israel, and what they called the groups appalling acts of terrorism. The un human rights chief echoed their remarks, but also told israel that the siege of gaza was illegal under international law. Paul adams has been looking at the reponses to the crisis around the world. Around the world, huge displays of solidarity with israel. Landmarks illuminated in blue and white, israels colours. Jewish communities and their supporters filling the streets. But other voices raised too. The Palestinian Diaspora and its allies, galvanised by events in gaza. Jews united will never be defeated in new york, the two passionate sides came face to face. This latest convulsion in the middle east triggering fury and grief. In this heated environment governments grapple with how to manage an evolving crisis, concentrating their anger for now on hamas. Hamas terrorists arent a resistance. Theyre not freedom fighters. They are terrorists. And no one in canada should
