Good evening from jerusalem, where new details are just emerging as weve come on air of the ferocity of the attack by hamas gunmen on Southern Israel last saturday. The Israeli Defence forces have today been recovering the bodies of civilians, including babies, from a rural community, just a mile from the border with gaza. Whole families are reported to have been killed. Israeli soldiers on the ground have described what theyve seen as a massacre. Tonight well hear from our correspondents across the region. From our international editor, jeremy bowen, who has been to that village, kfaraza, where jeremy bowen, who has been to that village, kfar aza, where the bodies are being recovered. Lucy williamson has been to the area near reim where hundreds were murdered in a Music Festival. And we will be inside gaza itself, under siege, with our correspondent rushdi abualouf. But our first report tonight is withjeremy, and a warning, you may find some of the images in his report distressing. The first few days of war at this small Israeli Community called kfar aza are a microcosm of israels trauma and a glimpse of what might come next. Israeli troops only seized back full control of the kibbutz this morning. It is one of a series of small israeli villages along the gaza wire. When we arrived they were still firing on houses across on the gaza side. Israeli combat soldiers only started their fight back here at around six oclock on saturday evening, around 12 hours after hamas attacked. These men are experienced soldiers, combat reservists. They said fighting their way back in against a determined enemy was hard going. How difficult is the fighting . You cannot imagine. Have you ever had to do anything you cannot imagine. Kfar aza was taken by surprise like everywhere else hamas attacked. The kibbutz guard, Armed Civilian volunteers, died fighting back. Hamas stormed in, burning homes and killing families according to the soldiers. As it took so long to secure the kibbutz the army couldnt recover all the civilian dead until this morning. These are the bodies of israelis. Decomposing hamas gunmen are still lying there where they were killed. The murder of israeli civilians here was without doubt a war crime, but what about the Palestinian Civilians israel is killing on hamas as you know, all armies have obligations under the rules of war to protect civilian life even in war zones. Are you doing this, with this level of air strikes going on at the moment and any Ground Operation that might happen . I am sure we fight for our value and our culture all our life. L value and our culture all our life. You keep your value in the same time. I know we will be very aggressive and very strong, but we keep our moral and our value. We are israeli, we arejewish, and although its a very difficult theatre with a lot of problems, people are staying on the battlefield who will suffer a lot, you can see what is happening here, but we want to kill the enemy, not the civilians. But here, but we want to kill the enemy, not the civilians. Not the civilians. But in only a few da s not the civilians. But in only a few days israel not the civilians. But in only a few days israel has not the civilians. But in only a few days israel has inflicted not the civilians. But in only a few days israel has inflicted immense | days israel has inflicted immense damage in gaza. They have cut off supplies of food, water and power and killed hundreds of civilians. Palestinians suffering, israel says, is the responsibility of hamas. Israel has already been accused of breaking rules of war and that will get louder as more palestinians are wounded and killed. At kfar aza israeli troops are thinking of what is next, perhaps a Ground Invasion of gaza. It was tough enough for the israelis to come in to recapture this area, these small border communities. It is a different order of Military Challenge to cross the wire, to get into gaza, potentially to fight house to house at a time when hamas will have made its plans and will be waiting. Some of these men are moving north in case war starts with hezbollah, The Powerful Lebanese militia backed by iran. What happened here is why israel is shaken to its core, wyatt insists it must break hamas and it points to the danger and uncertainty ahead. Im joined now by our international editor, jeremy bowen, whos in the city of ashkelon in Southern Israel. As we were coming on air we were getting details of what is being described as a massacre in this kibbutz. What more do you have . It seems pretty clear there was a mass occur because, as i said in the army didnt get in there, the israeli army didnt even start to try to regain the area for 12 hours after hamas got in there, so basically they could rampage around. Senior officers there told me the kibbutz civilian guard, which was composed of people with military experience, that they fought, they tried to fight back, but there were not many of them and they were killed and those bodies were among those recovered today. Outside, as you saw in the piece, there was a woman who was under a purple sleeping bag. One of the soldiers said to me that, an officer said to me that she had been beheaded. I did not move the covering to see if he was telling the truth, but she was undoubtedly killed in the front garden of her own house, so i think the word massacre is appropriate to what happened there. What struck me in kfar aza is that it really does sum up kfar aza is that it really does sum up all the reasons why israelis are so shocked, traumatised, why they are so angry, why they want notjust revenge, but the government wants to change the strategic equation in gaza so hamas cant do anything like this again. But this is the middle east, it is a volatile area, and the way ahead is not smooth for anybody. Indeed, ok, jeremy bowen, reporting for us, thank you. Palestinian Health Officials say the number of People Killed by retaliatory israeli Rocket Attacks in gaza has now risen to at least 830, with well over 4,000 injured. The United Nations says israels complete siege of the territory announced yesterday, deprives civilians of Goods Essential for their survival and breaks International Humanitarian law. The gaza strip, or simply gaza, is palestinian territory with israel on its northern border and egypt to the south. Its a tiny sliver of land, when you consider the number of People Living there. 2. 3 million in an area just 25 km long and 10 km wide. The largest settlement is gaza city. The Ruling Authority is the militant group, hamas, in control since 2007. Its committed to israels destruction, hoping to create an islamic state. The uk has detonated hamas as a terror organization, but its israel that controls gazas airspace, Shoreline The Un says 80 of gazas population survives on international aid, Human Rights Watch has called gaza an open air prison. Israeli rockets can cause mass casualties in the densely populated territory, and the war and of back streets will make any Israeli Defense force Ground Operation extremely difficult. Its believed hamas has built a vast network of tunnels like these, in which gunmen can hide and be re supplied with weapons. If israel decides to cross the border, the fighting will be bloody and intense. You get a real sense of how difficult that operation will be. The bbc has a rare insight into the situation on the ground in gaza, with our correspondent, rushdi abualouf. Hes lived there his entire life. Its too dangerous for rushdi to report live for us this evening , so hes just this update. We can see the scale of destruction in this neighbourhood. It was targeted yesterday. Many buildings were destroyed, An Ii Storey Building was knocked down two days ago but the destruction in this area has been targeted last night. Israel has been targeted last night. Israel has carried out 200 air strikes targeting hamas infrastructure. They hit many buildings, government buildings belonging to the hamas authority. But look at the scale of destruction in the area and how civilian homes were completely affected and some of them were completely destroyed. This gentleman just told us we have to leave the area because it seems the israelis area because it seems the israelis are warning residents of the area they should leave, they are going to target another building in the area. But look at the scale of destruction. This is happening, with israelis targeting housing, shops, ministries and mosques, everything. The whole neighbourhood was levelled to zero. This is one of the most important economic hubs for gaza. As you can see, most of the shops were damaged, houses were damaged, the infrastructure. This is the street that leads to the southern part of the city and it is completely blocked. , a. ,. ,. , blocked. Rushdi abualouf with that u date. The first reports of saturdays attack came from a Music Festival in reim in the south of israel near the border with gaza. Hamas gunmen arrived in force and killed at least 260 people there. The attackers then continued their rampage into the surrounding villages. And middle east correspondent Lucy Williamson has been to reim to hear the testimony of people there. And you may find her report distressing. The road that led to an open air party, now an open air crime scene. The pathway of hamas gunmen mapped by their weapons and their bodies. Their target, a Festival Site where hundreds died. Screaming. The ground zero of this multipronged attack. Among the dead, the passengers of this car, gunned down as they fled. Bodies and dave berry still lined the route into this Festival Site. Bodies and debris. You can still see the ground here is covered with the remains of weapons, the uniforms they used days on from this attack. Families all across this area are still trying to trace exactly what happened to their loved ones. A 12 and i6 year olds were taken by gunmen from a house nearby.
