Well, england face australia in a friendly on friday before a Euro Qualifier at home to italy next tuesday. And englands defender Harry Maguire says a phone call from David Beckham meant everything, after he was jeered by scotland fans last month. The Manchester United defender scored an own goal in a 3 1win, but says hes been encouraged by beckham, who suffered plenty of abuse himself after being sent off at the 98 world cup. About three weeks ago, after the scotland game, he got in touch with me, so it was really nice of him and i really appreciated that. Throughout my career, David Beckham is someone who i looked up to and i watched when i was a young boy. Unfortunately i didnt end up on the right wing and scoring and assisting as many goals as he has. But yeah, he was a big role model when i was growing up and now i think itjust shows how classy he is to reach out to me. And obviously a lot of people are speaking about me at the moment, but obviously to see what he went through and the resilience that hes shown, what he did reminded me of the career that ive had to date and the big moments ive had in my career. And i think, like i say, when youre going through tough moments, youve got to think on past experiences and past memories and where youve gone in your career and what youve been through. Like i say, every career is so up and down. And especially when you reach what ive reached in terms of being the captain of the biggest club in the world for three and a half years. And hes been in that position and he knows what its like. And obviously i watched the documentary and i couldnt believe how much he went through at the time. So, yeah, i know in the documentary gary neville speaks a lot about how resilient he is as a person. And, you know, i think hes been a huge role model for many footballers growing up, especially in my era. Wayne rooney says he wants to take Birmingham City to the next level after being named the new manager of the english second tier side. He joins luton with The Club 17th in the Premier League table. Were getting closer to a huge weekend for the remaining three home nations at the rugby world cup. Ireland have the standout Quarter Final, dont they . The number one side in the world will face three time champions new zealand at the stade de france. Coach andy farrell has been able to name an unchanged xv to take on the all blacks. Gavin andrews is with the ireland squad. With the pool stages wrapped up at this world cup, ireland are on a roll. Theyve won 17 in a row and are now slight favourites to topple the mighty all blacks on saturday night. Andy farrell seems to have a template for success, and its more of the same in terms of selection from the head coach. Wingers mack hansen and James Lowe Have proved their fitness, having picked up knocks against scotland last weekend. In an unchanged pack, Iain Henderson maintains his partnership with tadhg beirne in the second row. Joe mccarthy comes on to the bench for the injured james ryan, andjimmy obrien gets his first opportunity of the tournament. This is a squad confident they can deliver. Its the big boys stuff, isnt it . Its the business end of the competition. And when you get to those points in a competition, then you draw hopefully on the good experiences that youve had, and the experiences that weve put ourselves under in the last three or four years. Theyre for moments like this, so weve got a very experienced group thats been through a lot, and learning to deal with weeks like last week and this week is something that weve got pretty good at. So you draw on those experiences. Trying to win a world cup, its something to go and get. Its not something that puts pressure on me. Its something that you dream of. Probably not as a kid, because when we were kids, we didnt dream of ireland winning the world cup. I suppose weve put ourselves in the position now to go and do that, but its something to go and get. Its not something to be pressured about. And i havent thought about my own career, to be honest. Ill think about it more when i finish. Its all geared up towards a massive game on saturday. Massive challenge for this team, the biggest we faced, and were looking forward to it. One more victory would see ireland equal the record run of consecutive wins in the top tier of the sport. To do it on the way to a first ever world cup semi final would properly break new ground. Gavin andrews, bbc news, paris. Well, that takes place in saint denis, as will france against south africa. Wales face argentina in marseille on saturday and england will be there for their Quarter Final against fiji on sunday. England lost to the Pacific Islanders for the first time in august. Forward jamie george told our rugby Union Correspondent chrisjones how that will motivate them. Yeah, Quarter Final is huge and, you know, opportunity to put a few things right because obviously that fiji game was shocking to say the least. So yeah, we make sure, you know, we take lessons from that and and be a better team this week. Twickenham games on your mind the one from august . Yeah, it is, ithink its probably would be wrong of us to sort of try and dismiss it. Were a better team, a much better team now than we were then. But, you know, ithink there are some clear things that we had to take away from that and Kevin Sinfield has been very clear about reminding us, showing us a few clips that hurt, you know what i mean . Like when you watch us defend like that, thats always going to hurt. So he showed us a few clips and made sure that, you know, were fully aware that, you know, we probably owe them one. Looking forward to that game. Thats jamie george with rugby Union Correspondent chris jones. Dont forget, you can get all the latest sports news from the bbc sport app or from our website as well. Thats bbc. Co. Uk sport, but for me and the rest of the team at the bbc sports centre, goodbye for now. Hello. Some fresh autumn weather on the way. Chilly even for some of us in Northern Parts of the uk, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. Its been so mild across many parts of the country so far this month. So were back to really where we should be this time of the year. So this is whats happening on thursday. This is the air mass, the temperature of the atmosphere. So still some warmth and humidity across the south. In fact, temporarily thursday into friday, well see a resurgence of that warmth as the Wind Direction changes temporarily from the southwest. But then, come saturday and sunday, its a northerly and that autumn chill arrives, touch of frost across Northern Areas by night, even a little bit of wintry ness a little bit of wintriness across the scottish hills. So lets have a look at the forecast then through the early hours, really quite cloudy and wet across some southern parts of the uk. But to the north of that, its generally clear and chilly. In the glens of scotland, temperatures barely above freezing, but most of our northern towns and cities around three to four degrees celsius. In the south, on the south coast, its still really quite mild, sort of remnants of that warmth left over, but a lot of cloud during the day, little dribs and drabs of rain. And then i think across much of yorkshire, Northern Ireland, the bulk of scotland, a bright if not sunny day, just scattered fairweather clouds, 13, 1a, still 18 in the south. But then come the evening, widespread heavy rain sweeps into many parts of england and wales, a really wet thursday night into friday, really complicated weather map. On the one hand, we have a Weather Front coming in, a low pressure from the south and weve got a cold front coming in from the north. You can just about see it here. So i think for a time wet in the morning on friday, temporarily that warmth, it literally clips the southeast, with temperatures up to 20 in london, 19 in norwich. But the colder autumn air arrives in scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England as well. So its a northerly temporarily, but northerly, but then into next week, High Pressure builds and were right in the middle in the centre of this area of High Pressure. So that means the winds will be generally light, therell be a lot of sunshine around. So its going to feel very, very pleasant indeed. I think a lot of crisp autumn sunshine on the way. Thats it for me. Bye bye. Welcome to newsday, reporting live from singapore. Im arunoday mukharji. The headlines israel pounds gaza into a fifth night, as gazas only Power Station runs out of fuel.
