It looks like hes going to concentrate more on the households rather than on businesses. And therefore, there are two major taxes that he could hope for, one is income tax and the other one is National Insurance contribution. Income tax is a broader tax and it would cost him more money, whereas National Insurance contribution focuses on people at work and will cost him a little bit less. Yeah, i mean having a bit less money to play with, i suppose, do you think perhaps that might give us a clearer sense of the conservative priorities here . Obviously, we know there might be an election coming. Its actually who that money goes to, where to target votes, maybe. That is a very good question because it does look like they are going to target consumers or households rather than businesses. Whereas if you look at what the priorities are in terms of raising growth potential, you do want to improve and get Business Investment growing faster. So that is really a very big question as to where the focus is going to be, whether its a long term increased productivity and stronger growth, which is unlikely to be in this budget, rather than getting people a little bit happier, given the tighter conditions they have been under and the higher tax burden theyve had to shoulder in a time where they also had cuts to Purchasing Power because of the higher inflation. And i guess he has to have half an eye on the global economy, the uks reputation. I mean, jeremy hunt did a Big Repairjob over the past few years, as we saw, Promising Big Unfunded giveaways doesnt tend to end well. No, absolutely. So theres less room there for him to be extra generous without having it within the envelope of some sort of spending plan. But even with that, it is quite likely that the current focus, the current government plan, will need to be reversed because theyre not as realistic in the sense that we will need to see an increase in day to day spending in certain Government Departments that are not protected, that is not in the plan, theres the reversal of the fuel duties that is unlikely to be in place. So thats an extra 6 billion, if you like, that is unlikely to be realised. So overall, were still looking at plans that are not particularly realistic but a little bit more, or at least within the obr, numbers that were likely to hear this week. In the us, all eyes are on the chip maker nvidia which has become the worlds third most valuable company. The darling of the Artificial Intelligence boom is now valued at two trillion dollars only apple and microsoft are valued higher. Nvidias share prices has rocketed 66 since the start of 2024 alone. Lets cross to new york and speak to our north America Business correspondent, erin delmore. Talk us through this meteoric rise . I remember back in february reporting that nvidia beat out apple to become the third most valuable company in the us and that was just after it beat out amazon. There is one thing going on here and that is the interest in this company right now, its stock price is growing faster than others in this ai race. Nvidias controls around 80 of the ai chip market, thats the components and processes that are used to capitalise and build on this ai technology. It is coming from a strong base, its stock price more than tripled in 2023 and this is great for nvidia but the enthusiasm around ai is great for all tech companies. We have seen microsoft and metas share price go up. Why mac lets bitcoin. I guess if you bought it a few years ago, it has been a tough few years. It is back, but the big been a tough few years. Over in china, thousands of delegates are preparing to gather in beijing, as the annual parliamentary meeting begins on tuesday. China is facing a number of economic challenges and many are hoping the government will unveil some bold policies to help give the economy a much needed boost. Heres our Business Reporter katie silver. When it comes to the economy, chinas officials are in a difficult position. The countrys post pandemic economic recovery has been disappointing. Youth unemployment is high. Local governments are saddled with debt. Oh, and people arent having babies, raising questions about the future workforce. And lets not forget, thats all before that downturn in the real estate sector, which accounts for about a quarter of the economy. Thats been going on for almost three years and falling Property Prices hurting consumer confidence, people are less willing to spend. And also, unlike in much of the rest of the world, prices in china are falling. And while that may feel welcome in the short term, it also signals that things are not well with the economy. Thats just whats happening inside china. From the outside, restrictions on chip exports are hurting the countrys tech ambitions. All in all, its a very tricky situation to make policies for. But beijing has been trying. The countrys central bank has been cutting key Interest Rates to boost the economy. State owned banks have promised theyll keep lending to those struggling property developers. But beijing hasnt shown any inclination to spend money to help turn the countrys economic fortunes around. And analysts say there are limited tools in their arsenal to fix things. Now, premier lis speech will be closely watched. Hes expected to announce chinas Economic Growth target for the year. And many are hoping a road map to get the country back to boom times again. To japan now where its been another record breaking Trading Session for markets, with the Nikkei Closing at an all time high. It tops off five consecutive weeks of gains. The story for the wider economy has been less rosy offically falling into recession and being knocked down the International Economic pecking order. But with inflation now at the governments target, speculation is growing about when the central bank will move away from its negative Interest Rate policies. Professor Seijiro Takeshita from the University Of Shizuoka explained the significance firstly of the nikkei reaching new heights. It is basically corporate earnings. The companies have been showing record high profit for third year in a row, very much pushed by cost cutting and raise the prices and also very much through the weakening of the yen. And as you know, leading exporters in japan have basically flourished with profit and well, compared to 1989, when we had the previous high in nikkei, our profit has increased by 600 . So its totally understandable that were reaching this level, at least from the numerical point of view. Japan, of course, has been in a period of sort of economic stagflation for a long, long time now. Deflation a particular issue. Is it too early to say were turning a corner here . Well, i think it might be too early to say were turning the corner because, well, ijust did tell you that we had 600 increase in profit, but, you know, its not like in 1989 where you had buoyant domestic demand and very strong exports. That is certainly not the case. Its because we had 60 increase in number of companies thats listed as well. So, you know, theres a lot of problems, including the productivity. We have all these problems, particularly the one that youre about to note, which is, you know, the financial policies which have basically remained to encourage and continue with the deflationary kind of world that weve been seeing. So on that point, then, how crucial will the bank ofjapan be here . I guess all eyes on things like Interest Rates. I mean, what is hoped for . What would you expect to see . Well, actually, the inflation, so called inflation that were seeing, is cost push inflation. It is quite different from Demand Inflation that youre seeing in the uk or us. But that said, yes, this is a very good timing for the bank ofjapan to normalise its rates and basically to ward off from many strange phenomena like il could control to normalise it. But we still have a long way to go. But that said, that could be one of the very first steps of normalisation, you know, that well be seeing in the next few years. In other news. Turkeys annual Inflation Rate climbed to 67 in february, exceeding expectations and keeping up pressure for tighter monetary policy. There were strong rises in food, hotel and education prices, according to official data out today. Turkeys Finance Minister said inflation could remain high over the coming months but would fall by early next year. Germany is set to be hit by more strikes. Tech giant apple has been fined 1. 8 billion euros by the European Commission for abusing its dominant position in the Music Streaming market.
