Hostages in gaza. He's asked for forgiveness, but ruled out new concessions to hamas to secure the release of those still being held. His comments came as
intense street protests
over his handling of negotiations entered a second night in israel, including these demonstrations outside his
office injerusalem.
Lucy williamson
has more from jerusalem. Israel's protesters and their
prime minister
are old acquaintances. Calls for a
hostage deal
have brought long established opponents onto the streets, but the shooting of six hostages in a
gaza tunnel last
week has broadened this movement, they say. And the mass demonstrations in tel aviv last night were a
turning point.
I think the news of the six hostages, the fact that they were alive and murdered right before they could have been saved, that broke it. After last night's mass protest, people are back on the streets again. There are growing public and political demands on israel's
prime minister
to make a deal, but
benjamin netanyahu,
protected by his parliamentary majority, isn't listening. Tonight
mr netanyahu
defied anyone to ask him to compromise now. These murderers executed six of our hostages, they shot them in the back of the head. That's what has changed. And now after this we are asked to
show seriousness,
we are asked to make concessions? what message does this send hamas? it says killed more hostages, murder more hostages, you'll get concessions. Mr neta nyahu isn't listening, but then much of the country isn't protesting. The oneday general
strike today,
largely unobserved, even in leftleaning tel aviv. These protests are part of the wellestablished opposition to israel's prime minister, say analysts, and so far little threat to him. I think that netanyahu knows better than i do. The best thing is to let it play as a
safety valve.
To do some ventilation, and let people say, we hate you, you are a murderer, enough is enough. Two of the protest*s most vocal activists were not in the
street today,
but in the cemetery, the parents of a hostage, burying their son. For 23 years, i was privileged to have the most stunning honour to be hersh*s mama. I will take it and say thank you. Ijust wish it had been for longer. Tonight they carried the burden of their
prime minister
through israel's streets. Empty coffins weighted with responsibility. But
mr netanyahu
is used to public protests. His
speech tonight
took aim instead at his
defence minister,
at the us president. Their demands for a deal much harder to ignore. Lucy williamson, bbc news, jerusalem. The israeli government says it's disappointed by the uk's decision to suspend some
arms exports
to israel. The british
foreign secretary,
david lamy,
said there was a clear risk the equipment might be used in serious violations of
international humanitarian law,
but insisted the move did not amount to an
arms embargo.
His israeli counterpart,
israel katz,
said the only beneficiaries would be hamas and iran. Here in the us,
presidentjoe biden
criticised
prime minister
netanyahu's approach to ceasefire negotiations, and also discussed next steps to secure the release of hostages in a white house
situation room meeting
with
kamala harris
and secretary of state
antony blinken
and us negotiators. Live now to gina abercrombiewinstanley, president of
the middle east policy council.
Always great to have you on the programme. We saw this process, maybe not as big as some predicted. What did you make of it and the pressure the
prime minister
is under? == minister is under? president. _ minister is under? president. They minister is under? president. They were | president. They were extraordinarily large. Some of the largest demonstrations against the
iraq war
in the early 2000s were in the united states and did not change policy. The
prime minister
is not under pressure unless the country is brought to a standstill by this process. That is apparently not something that will happen soon. The knesset is out, his coalition remains firm. What he is doing allows him to continue in place, so the pressure, while ramping up, from the domestic side is not enough to get him to change his mind or remove him from power. Today there was _ remove him from power. Today there was this _ remove him from power. Today there was this moment remove him from power. Today there was this moment with there was this moment with
president biden
in the us and he was asked if netanyahu was doing enough to secure a
ceasefire and hostage
deal. He simply said no. Do
ceasefire and hostage
deal. He simply said no. simply said no. Do you agree? the president _ simply said no. Do you agree? the president often _ simply said no. Do you agree? the president often speaks the president often speaks frankly and truthfully and i would not disagree with his assessment. It is a widespread shared assessment from us leaders as well as many in the israeli public and in the international community. If the priority is saving lives and finding a way out of this continuous circuit of violence titfortat, then a deal needs to happen. The prime minister's position makes clear the rest of the hostages* lives are in serious jeopardy. Of the hostages* lives are in seriousjeopardy. Hamas has serious jeopardy. Hamas has
made seriousjeopardy.
Hamas has made clear it is willing to pay the price. The israeli government in continuing to target hamas leaders including the negotiator in doha and kill them, makes it clear there is no reason not to kill the hostages if indeed they will not be able to stop the war, to get a ceasefire in exchange and the israeli government has made clear the ceasefire will be one thatis clear the ceasefire will be one that is temporary. Certainly having israeli forces left inside the
gaza strip
is
something sinwar
would find difficult to except. difficult to except. There are still major difficult to except. There are still major sticking points,. Still major sticking points, negotiations are continuing, the biden administration saying this latest proposal will be a take it or leave it deal. Is this
the last hope
here for a deal to get done? this
the last hope
here for a deal to get done? for that take it or leave _ deal to get done? for that take it or leave it _ deal to get done? for that take it or leave it to _ deal to get done? for that take it or leave it to be _ deal to get done? for that take it or leave it to be taken it or leave it to be taken seriously, there will have to be very tough conversations in private about exactly what that means. Whether the united states will continue to put our reputation, how
men and women
in the
armed forces
at risk as we continue to stand by israel in these difficult times, there will be conversations about that. The answer may be it is take it or leave it for this
moment but diplomacy
always tries to find another day to move the ball forward. I would be very surprised if that is the case, that anybody walks away, and under very difficult circumstances, even after the assassination of
ismail haniyeh,
hamas did not walk away, so there is some drive to find a resolution. find a resolution. Also on monday _ find a resolution. Also on monday the _ find a resolution. Also on

What do you think that says about the state of international support for israel*s
war effort
in gaza? the support has steadily declined over these last 11 months. Many are horrified at the loss of life on the
gaza side
knowing it would take billions of dollars to reconstruct trucked the
gaza strip
and someone will have to pay for that and the discomfort of the hostages but also keeping in
mind tens of thousands
of israelis have been displaced as the conflict with hezbollah has gone on, the danger is that our always apparent to the rest of the region, so all of that has lessened support for the way the government of israel has conducted this conflict. Many states will be looking at their own culpability including the united states, for sure, looking at how this affects our own laws and our culpability and how this conflict is
panning out.
and how this conflict is
panning out.
Thank you as always monday is labor day here in the us. The holiday honouring the
trade union movement
is also the unofficial start of the final sprint to
election day.
The democratic nominee,
vice president
kamala harris, has been
holding events
in the crucial
swing state
of pennsylvania.
She wasjoined
by presidentjoe biden,
theirfirstjoint campaign trip
since he dropped out of the presidential race injuly. In keeping with the
labor day theme,
the
president and vice
president spoke to
local electrical union
members. Earlier, the vicepresident was in michigan, another
swing state
with strong links to the trade union movement. Here she is with auto workers in detroit. For generations into trait and across our nation the mothers and sisters of
labour have
stood together to
righteously demand
fair pay, better benefits and safe
working conditions.
And let me say, every person in our nation has benefited from that work. Everywhere i go i tell people, you may not be a
union member.
You better thanks a
union member.
Republican presidential
nominee donald trump
and his vice presidential candidate,
jd vance,
did not hold any events on monday. We*re just over two months out from election
day and ms
harris is expected to take part in herfirst presidential debate next week against trump. Venezuela*s opposition leader is facing arrest, just over a month after the presidential election he claims to have won. In the past hour, a judge in the
latin american country
issued a warrant for the arrest of edmundo gonzalez, who stood against incumbent president nicolas maduro injuly*s general election. Prosecutors say mr gonzales
usurped the function
of venezuela*s election authorities after his
opposition coalition
published a website with what it says are the true, detailed results of the election. That
vote count
showed an overwhelming victory for mr gonzales. Mr maduro*s government published its own result showing a narrow win by the incumbent president, but it has not released a detailed
vote tally.
Few international observers were allowed to monitor the poll. Those that were said the election was neither free nor fair. In a separate
development monday,
us authorities seized a privatejet used by
mr maduro.
The plane was undergoing repairs in the
dominican republic
when it was impounded by american officials and flown to florida.
Law enforcement officials
say the jet had been exported from the us into venezuela secretly, and in violation of american sanctions. 0ur asked our latin american correspond on how significant it is. It correspond on how significant it is.. correspond on how significant it is.. . . correspond on how significant it is. _,... , , of it is. It is a ma'or ramping up of political it is. It is a major ramping up of political tensions. It is. It is a major ramping up of political tensions. We it is. It is a major ramping up of political tensions. We are l of political tensions. We are talking about the man who stood against nicolas maduro a handful of weeks ago who the opposition called president
elect gonzales,
so sure our end at our day of the electoral data they are published they say shows he won by more than 30%. This in essence is a step ljy 30%. This in essence is a step by a government backed, a governmentcontrolled agency to say, we do not recognise those figures. We do not recognise
edmundo gonzalez
and we have no intention of stepping down normal will be leave him in peace. He has been hiding since the
national electoral council
found
president maduro
to be the winner ofjuly*s election. What will that mean for the
protest movement
to make it has been more than a month since
election results
were announced. How does this fit in with what have seen from the majuro government in terms of its reaction, its crackdown on the movement? in its reaction, its crackdown on the movement? its reaction, its crackdown on the movement? in that time we have seen _ the movement? in that time we have seen the _ the movement? in that time we have seen the government the movement? in that time we l have seen the government
arrest key members
of the opposition alliance*s team,
leadership teams,
their
campaign teams,
seen videos posted because people have been arrested saying, there is your waste warrant? simply nothing given, no reaction from the
security forces
who storm in and take them. 0bviously mr gonzales has
beenin them.
0bviously mr gonzales has been in hiding during the time forfears of his been in hiding during the time for fears of his own well being and on the streets when people turn down in protest of the claimed election result by the majuro government, more than 1500 people were arrested, some for simply having material that was antigovernment on their
mobile phones,
so i think this reiterates there is no position, whether or not it is another figure, position, whether or not it is anotherfigure, any member of another figure, any member of the anotherfigure, any member of the team, people on the streets. It doesn*t matter who you are, if you are in opposition to the majuro government, the
security forces
and the government are prepared to arrest you, put you behind bars and double down in its position they won this election and has, as

First when the
supreme court validated the results of the election, they also said and requested to the office of the prosecutor, initiated a
criminal inaudible against edmundo gonzalez. Some leading opposition figures have been apprehended, like the
lawyer and leader of the opposition. Also important to note is the appointment of the minister of
winners weller, the
ministry overseeing the federal police and it is interesting to see such a strong main figure and a historic strong figure within the party who is never served under a cabinet by
nicholas majuro is now taking over this ministry, so that tells you the
repression willjust ministry, so that tells you the repression will just escalate, but what can happen? it will be hard for the opposition for sure. It will be another blow against the morale, against the organisation but it can backfire because i think the more the repression is coming and targeting the leaders and heads of the opposition, it could backfire because it could unite the opposition and citizens and people more strongly to the opposition and against the resume resume. How big of a threat do he and his party*s leader maria corina machado face? how might they react? they will continue the fight and they say this will make them stronger. I think this is a good answer. They have to be careful. She could be the next one that could be the next one that could be the next one that could be issued a warrant against her, but i think this is very important to the world to see, to see how the regime is cracking down on the opposition illegally and the world needs to see this and more actions need to be taken, more actions need to be taken, more measures and more voices heard by the international community, announcing what the regime is doing.
I5 community, announcing what the regime is doing. regime is doing. Is this now ma be regime is doing. Is this now may be a regime is doing. Is this now may be a new _ regime is doing. Is this now may be a new strategy regime is doing. Is this now| may be a new strategy from the majuro regime? we had seen the
police forces in the streets during those process process, but now it seems to be using the government institutions against the opposition. institutions against
the o osition. , , opposition. Definitely, he is
seekina opposition. Definitely, he is seeking support _ opposition. Definitely, he is seeking support from opposition. Definitely, he is seeking support from the i seeking support from the courts, we saw as he reached out to the
supreme court to validate the elections and now this crackdown on the
opposition leaders. He is using the system in place, the legal resources, but all the courts in
venice weller are not independent courts, they are all coopted by the regime and you did not mention the crimes that
edmundo gonzalez inaudible pointed out, functions related to the website as well as sabotaging electronic systems but if you look closely at the warrant it also mentioned instigation is to
disobedience and conspiracy, so this will get harderfor the and conspiracy, so this will get harder for the opposition for sure. . , for sure. The other news, the us confiscating _ for sure. The other news, the us confiscating this _ for sure. The other news, the us confiscating this jet for sure. The other news, the us confiscating this jet that i us confiscating this jet that was often used by nicolas maduro. Beyond that, what can the united states do? what should international governments do in response to this arrest warrant? this arrest warrant? very interesting _ this arrest warrant? very interesting and _ this arrest warrant? very interesting and the this arrest warrant? very l interesting and the timing, right after that happened, the confiscation, this warrant was issued, so it could seen as retaliation by the regime. I think the us can take these types of measures of course and maybe we see stronger measures like this. May be the elimination of these is to people close to the regime or members of the regime, the confiscation of maybe international
bank accounts they have or in the united states, many measures can be taken, but that will be the only way. The stronger the regime represses the opposition i think more measures need to be put in place and even stronger ones. be put in place and even stronger ones. More than a month and _ stronger ones. More than a
month and counting stronger ones. More than a
