She says she will now resume some public duties, but will take each day as it comes. Heres our senior royal correspondent, daniela relph. Like we have never seen them before. Informal, intimate, glossy and polished. This video, released by kensington palace, is the princess of wales in her own words. The cancerjourney is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone. Especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before. And with that, a new perspective on everything. Is this filming . Hello. Hello all the footage was filmed in norfolk, family were on holiday over the summer. Like so many who have experienced cancer, the princess says it is her family who have got her through. This time has, above all, it reminded william and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life which so many others often take for granted is simply loving and being loved. The film shows the princesss parents Playing Cards with their grandChildren. This has been a family summer, a chance for the princess to recuperate with those who know her best. My path to healing and full recovery is long. Kensington palace has been careful in its language. The princess has not been described as cancer free. But with treatment over for now, this is a new stage of her recovery. Despite all that has gone before, i enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of Hope And Appreciation of life. Her return to public life will be careful, with a Light Schedule planned in the weeks ahead. She said she has been humbled by the public s kindness, empathy and compassion. And she said her thoughts were with those dealing with the illness. To all those who are continuing their own cancerjourney, i remain with you Side By side, Hand In hand. Out of darkness can come light. So let that light shine bright. The King And Queen have offered their love, thoughts and support to the princess for her continued recovery. For now, we will still only see her occasionally, but the outlook is much more positive. Lets speak to our correpsondent Helena Wilkinson whos at windsor. Talk us through what we learned through this video message. That video was filmed by an independent Film Maker last month in norfolk. The family were on holiday there. As was mentioned in the report, it is incredibly intimate, personal, its emotional and moving and its emotional and moving and it is in princess of wales s own words. What we have learned is this is the latest Health Update about princess of wales, the last time we heard from her was injune when she said was making good progress, but Today Confirmation that she has now completed her chemotherapy. In that video you can sense the relief that she is feeling following completion of preventative chemotherapy. We know she started that in late february and she publicly revealed that she had cancer in march of this year. So she has completed the chemotherapy now. She has reflected, it is a reflective statement in that video and in her words she talks about how the diagnosis has given her a new perspective, a different perspective, a different perspective and that All Of Us take things for granted. She talks about Family And Love being incredibly important. And also, the last nine months being incredibly tough for them as a family. This is very much princess of wales wanting to talk publicly about her own cancerjourney, but you can imagine anyone who has had a Cancer Diagnosis will very much be able to relate to what the princess has said today. She has completed chemotherapy, in terms of what has happened next and whether we will see the princess of wales, she herself has set the path to healing and full recovery is long. She is now focused, she says, on doing what she can to stay cancer free. Kensington palace has said that she is going to carry out a Light Programme of external engagements. We expect to see her possibly at Remembrance Sunday and also at the Carol Concert that she holds annually. It is very much going to be taken Day By day depending on how she feels and obviously be guided by Medical Advice by doctors. Advice by doctors. Thank you for that here, the head of one of the biggest unions, unite, has called on the government to do a U Turn on its plan to withdraw the Winter Fuel Payment from millions of pensioners in england and wales. Sharon graham has accused the government of picking the pockets of pensioners while leaving the richest totally untouched. Tonight, the Chancellor Rachel reeves has been meeting Labour Backbenchers to try to secure their support for the governments plan. Our political editor, Chris Mason says the Prime Minister now needs to work out how he will treat any rebellion. You may remember a couple of months back now when there was a vote about the two child benefit cap. There was half a dozen or so Labour Mps who defied the government, wanted to get rid of it. Labour say its unaffordable to get rid of, and they were slung out of the parliamentary party, at least for six months. But that was an idea that had been talked about in advance, whereas this one has come, relatively speaking, Out Of The Blue since the election. Now, we should be clear. Lets put the parliamentary shenanigans to one side for a moment. Labour, the government is going to win this vote. How do we know that . They have got a majority that is himalayan in proportion. So millions of people are going to lose their Winter Fuel Payment. The question is the extent to which this is a challenge on the Prime Ministers authority. And as you were saying, the chancellor right now in parliament is trying to persuade lots of very uncomfortable Labour Mps who are not used to their email inboxes, flooded with people having a go at them to try and argue, as the chancellor, is that its the right thing to do right now, because they say that will allow them to do things that they want to do into the future. But it is difficult. Its a difficult Persuasion Job for plenty of Labour Mps who, as i say, are not used to this kind of criticism. So what does the Prime Minister do . Well, it kind of depends what any rebellion looks like. Do people vote against him or do they abstain . Hes got a decision to make about what should happen there. And you know what a final thought. If folk within the Labour Party had enjoyed the novelty of being back in government again after so, so long a real sense now that the rubber s hitting the road and theyre having to make difficult decisions. Tomorrow the new temporary early Release Scheme for prisoners in england and wales come into effect. Prisoners who currently serve 40 of the fixed term sentences rather than 50 will be automatically routed least. It is a short Term Measure to deal with Prison Overcrowding in the system running out of cities in the coming months. But will it address it will not address longer term issues with the system. Longer term issues with the s stem. , system. The Governments Expansion system. The Governments Expansion of system. The Governments Expansion of the system. The Governments Expansion of the prisoner. Expansion of the prisoner Release Scheme tomorrow by sometime in the Prison Overcrowding crisis but by no means does it solve it. Friday the Prison Population in england and wales was 88,521 compared to operational capacity of 89,600 and 19. Very little leeway. Just over 1000. Last friday, Prison Population in england and wales was 88,521, compared to operational capacity of 89,619. So very little leeway, just over a thousand. And bear in mind that this Population Level is well above what is considered safe. Furthermore, on the governments own figures, the Prison Population is still projected to considerably outstrip the current capacity of the Prison Estate over the next few years, rising to 105,000 by 2028. That is an additional 17,000 prisoners relative to today. So the two main Policy Options facing the government, according to experts, is do they, one, create more Prison Places to cope with this demand or, two seek to reduce demand for places through Sentencing Reform . First, lets take stock of where we are in terms of building more places in 2021. The previous government pledged to create 20,000 additional Prison Places by 2025, but only around 6,000 of these places have been created so far, so we are considerably behind schedule. Why the Hold Ups . Well, One Majorfactor is the delay in new proposed prisons receiving planning permission, and some mps have been lobbying against them. As with new housing, some people around the country dont want new prisons built close to them. So what will this Governments Approach be . Well, One Majorfactor is the delay in new proposed prisons receiving planning permission, and some mps have been lobbying against them. As with new housing, some people around the country dont want new prisons built close to them. So what will this Governments Approach be . Well, the signs are that they will seek to build more prisons. Injuly 2024, the newjustice secretary, shabana mahmood, said she will later this year publish a new ten Year Capacity Strategy to acquire new land for prison sites. She also suggested Prison Building would be placed in a ministers hands. What does this mean . Well, its a heavy hint that decisions on building new prisons will be taken away from local planning authorities, meaning ministers could effectively force them through. However, the Ministry Ofjustice is not at this stage confirming that the full 20,000 additional places targeted by the last government will be delivered. Cassia rowlands of the Institute For Government also notes that they are eye wateringly expensive to build, and she thinks its possible some of those plans are cancelled given some of the many competing demands on public spending, yet this creates a problem. This chart shows the projected rise in the Prison Population. The dotted Blue Line here. And look at the dotted red line. This is the Institute For Governments projections for prison capacity, assuming all of those 20,000 places are eventually built, not by 2025, but by 2030. So if some of those new places are cancelled, the shortfall against the projected increase in the Prison Population, as you can see, would be even larger. Perhaps this is where Sentencing Reform comes in. The main driver for the sharp projected rise in the population of prisons is longer sentences being handed out, and the Prison Reform Trust argues its right that the government commits to building more prisons, if only to replace victorian prisons which are crumbling and, in its view, hindering effective rehabilitation of inmates. Yet, it argues, there needs to be an open and honest debate about sentencing in this country, because sending thousands more people to prison than we currently do is not sustainable or sensible. But thats a difficult debate to have, given where public opinion is on crime and punishment. And it remains to be seen whether this government is willing to open it.
