Worth just reminding ourselves that Pat Finucane<\/a> was 39 years old when he was shot by Loyalist Paramilitaries<\/a> at his home in 1989 in front of his wife geraldine, who spoke there, and his children, one of whom, john, was speaking there as well. He was shot 1a times, and of the uda at the time said that they had attacked Mr Finucane<\/a> because he was a member of the ira, something that was rejected by police utterly, that claim. And just remind you of how long this Has<\/a> been going on for, of course, the fact it is a 35 years on Has<\/a> been mentioned many, many times, but it was back in 2012 when the then Prime Minister<\/a> David Cameron<\/a> apologised for State Collusion<\/a> in the murder of Pat Finucane<\/a>. Fast forward to 2024, this new Labour Government<\/a> Has<\/a> had to make a choice about whether it was going to hold a Public Inquiry<\/a> into the killing or not, following years and years of legal action by geraldine finucane, who you have just heard from. Over those years, over those three decades, there have been many investigations, lots of legal action, as i said. There have been broken promises, but never a Public Inquiry<\/a>. As you heard there, that is always what the Family<\/a> have said is the only thing that can give them the answer is that they want on this killing, and on the level of State Collusion<\/a>. Because they believe that it went much further than what Has<\/a> been uncovered so far. We just heard earlier this afternoon from the Secretary Of State<\/a>, Hilary Benn<\/a>, about this Public Inquiry<\/a>. When he was speaking, he said it would be held because if the exceptional reason of outstanding and unfulfilled commitments by previous governments, and that is why he thinks and Has<\/a> announced a Public Inquiry<\/a> will go ahead. He says he hopes for transparency, that the inquiry will avoid unnecessary cost, and that his government will work together for and that his government will work Togetherfor A<\/a> and that his government will work together for a better future for all of the people in northern ireland. But there Has<\/a> been a lot of political reaction, as you can imagine. The announcement of this Public Inquiry<\/a> Has<\/a> been welcomed by northern irelands first Minister Michelle Oneill<\/a> of Sinn Fein<\/a>. You just heard from John Finucane<\/a> during that press conference, Pat Finucane<\/a>s son, he is a Sinn Fein<\/a> mp, it Has<\/a> also been welcomed by the irish taoiseach. From the dup, gavin robinson, he is the leader of northern irelands largest unionist party, he said this Decision Will Heap<\/a> further misery on families and that Todays Decision<\/a> sent a message that this murder is more deserving of investigation than others. And i think that the discrepancy in that political reaction really demonstrates just how difficult Troubles Era<\/a> killings and murders and the fallout can be for many people in northern ireland, all of these years on. I think it is fair to say that if the conservative government were still in power, this Public Inquiry<\/a> would not have been announced, because that Legacy Act<\/a> meant there would be no future public inquiries for Troubles Era<\/a> killings. But the Labour Party<\/a> since they came in to power, into government, they said they would repeal and replace the Legacy Act<\/a>. We are still waiting to hear more details on that, but this obviously shows a very firm step forward in doing just that, and announcing this Public Inquiry<\/a>. We heard about this reset of relationships, that was the work that was used again and again, a reset of relations between britain and ireland, and this will certainly be an important step forward in that.
