Emerged of Russias Expulsion of six british diplomats from moscow, accusing them of spying and sabotage, claims the Uk Government says are completely baseless. The kremlin said london had engaged in Multiple Unfriendly Acts and that actions of the British Embassy In Moscow aimed to cause harm to russias people, but the Uk Government says it believes the suspension came after it brought in measures against the russian embassy earlier in the year. Well discuss the expulsion of those diplomats shortly and also how the west is interpreting those comments from President Putin, but first our political editor chris mason, whos travelling with the british Prime Minister, has been talking about the meeting with President Biden about ukraine. They met at the White House injuly, shortly after the Prime Minister had taken office and won the uk general election. He was here for a nato summit. This time it is a specific visit entirely based around a meeting with the president in what is in plain sight right now Shuttle Diplomacy around ukraines allies arriving at a collective decision about this question of the missiles. So theres this Meeting Today. We saw david lammy, the Foreign Secretary, antony blinken, the us secretary of state, in kyiv just the other day, the Prime Ministers off to rome to meet the italian Prime Minister that is just around the corner. And then the week after that, its the un general assembly, the annual gathering of World Leaders in new york. And theres a real sense of pace in all of these conversations, western countries trying to come to a collective decision that they are all comfortable with and can live with. Former Diplomat Philip Reeker was the us charg daffaires to the uk from 2021 to 2022. He says when it comes to the the support for ukraine, the us and the uk are fairly aligned. I dont think there are any great differences. I think theres been an ongoing Coordination And Conversation between the united states and the united Kingdom Onjust about every issue globally, but certainly in terms of support for ukraine. I was in london, as you mentioned, uh, heading our mission there when vladimir putin attacked. Of course, he had denied right up until the day he did it that it was going to happen. But we, the united states and the uk together had released intelligence information. We were prepared, we knew what was coming, and weve been pretty much lockstep since then through different Prime Ministers, obviously, and now a whole different government in the uk. Great opportunity for prime Minister Keir Starmer to have this sit down, this tete a tete with President Biden. Biden, of course, now with more time for these kinds of meetings since hes not running for re election, i understand theyll Meet Today in the oval office, just the two of them, and then proceed to the Blue Room of the White House, where theyll have an expanded meeting for at least two hours with their senior staff and, of course, the two ambassadors. And for so long in this conflict, weve heard warnings about the risk of further escalation, those warnings coming from the west. Whats changing . Well, ithink, you know, weve heard a lot of warnings from vladimir putin, of course, too, since he undertook this illegal, unprovoked attack against ukraine, its sovereignty, its territorial integrity, really an Attack Sort of against the west. And weve stood together to support ukraine in this, to make sure they have what they need, even though thats not always an easy thing to do. Um, i think this Meeting Today between the Prime Minister and the president will have an opportunity not only to review the latest strategy there remembering, of course, that the two foreign ministers, secretary of State Blinken and and Foreign Secretary david lammy, were just together in london and then in ukraine together. So theyve got the latest on this. And a reminder, too, that less than a week ago, in sort of an unprecedented public move, our two intelligence chiefs, Bill Burns of the cia and, of course, Richard Moore of mi6 met publicly and discussed at the ft forum. And in an Op Ed theyjointly wrote, um, you know how we are coordinating on this. So i think were really lockstep and this will be an opportunity to talk about a wide range of strategic issues, including the middle east, including the indo pacific, which are also key, just ten days out from the un general assembly. And a reminder, too, that President Biden will soon host in wilmington, delaware, the so called Asia Indo pacific quad, that is the leaders of india, japan and australia. Um, and im sure hell discuss that with the Prime Minister. For more on the reaction from European Leaders to President Putins remarks on the use of long range missiles by ukraine, heres our eastern Europe Correspondent Sarah Rainsford in neighbouring poland. Robust response from poland. A robust response from the british Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, as well. And i think interesting those responses because vladimir putin of course, i think thinks hes drawn another red line in the sand. He has made a statement about the potential, uh, permission being given to ukraine to use those british and potentially american long range missiles into russia. He has said that that would be bringing nato directly into participating in the war in ukraine. And as far as he said, that would mean there were consequences. Now, his spokesperson then went on to say that this was an unambiguous statement from vladimir putin. Dmitry peskov said that he believed that those to whom that message was addressed had got that message. But i think its interesting that, as you say, the robust response from britain, but also from here in poland. Dont forget, poland is right, of course, on the Front Line with ukraine, it neighbours ukraine. It potentially could be in the Front Line of any sort of response if there were one from russia. And yet the Prime Minister here, donald tusk, has been pretty unequivocal. He said we shouldnt worry too much about what vladimir putin is saying. Dont be put off by it, he said. Dont pay too much attention, he said. He suggested it meant that russia was feeling somewhat threatened, somewhat weak. And in fact, he said, russia is trying to discourage us from helping ukraine. Ukraine has a legitimate right of self defence. And he said vladimir putins words should rather do the opposite. They should encourage ukraines allies to stand by it. So i think, as i say, those words, given extra weight by the fact that theyre coming from such a big and important country as Poland Right here on the border with ukraine. Our diplomatic correspondent Caroline Hawley has been following reaction from the uk foreign office. Heres her analysis of the situation. Well, the timing is very interesting because you say news of the expulsion. In fact, this is not news to the foreign office, because what were told is that in early august, the uk was informed that the accreditation of these six diplomats was to be removed. Then it was removed in mid august. The diplomats are already back in the uk. Im told that they are junior diplomats. Theyve already been replaced. So no news to the foreign office. But the timing is certainly interesting. At a time of heightened tensions between russia and the west, and when a very high Stakes Decision is, were told, or apparently imminent on those long range missiles. Now, the sense im getting from the foreign office is this was a Tit For Tat. Um, in april there was an Arson Attack. Sorry. In april, two men were charged with an Arson Attack on a business linked to ukraine. I think it was a warehouse with aid to ukraine. And two men were charged with that. And there were suggestions they were linked to russia. Then in may, the russian Defence Attache was expelled from the uk, and russian diplomats were told they could only stay in the country for five years. And the sense that officials are giving us is that they think that these expulsions that came in august were some kind of a response, Tit For Tat for that. But certainly the timing is very interesting. Theres clearly a message in it that this very public announcement of the removal of the accreditation. Is it a message for Keir Starmer . For domestic consumption in russia . Boris bondarev is a former russian diplomat. He resigned from his post in protest against Russias Invasion of ukraine in 2022. Heres his assessment of the expulsion of british diplomats. We can interpret as a kind of symmetrical response. This is a favourite favourite thing for russian government, has been for many years. When you cannot strike your adversary back, the same way he strikes you, you can try to do some kind of manoeuvre. This is a symmetrical response, so the west is now discussing the Lifting Restrictions on ukraine, on the launches of Western Weapons into russian territory. And this expulsion is kind of an answer to this. Putin says that he, moscow can make it harderfor the uk in particular to work, gather information. To make uk less informed about what is going on In Moscow. That is kind of a warning. You want escalation, you will get escalation, but maybe not necessarily in terms you can expect. Putin now demonstrated, well, i could see a little bit unpredictable. Just to be clear, you see a link between the expulsion of the diplomats. You do see a link between that and President Putin using it as a way of expressing his displeasure over the way there could be an easing of the restrictions of using long range missiles. I think that is fact, that it has come into public domain. I think it gives us some reasons to suspect it was done by purpose. On purpose. This purpose is to signal something, and the signal can be that this is a warning or some kind of displeasure expressed by moscow to this ongoing discussions about ukraine. What other responses might we see from President Putin if a decision is made to ease the restrictions on Ukraines Risk of the long range missiles so it can make targets further into russia, hit those targets . Would it make a target if there are missiles coming from the uk and france rather than the usa . I think all these problems are mostly existent in the minds of western politicians. Because it seems uk, France And Other Countries are so reluctant in intensifying its assistance to ukraine. It seems the west is still very much afraid of what the west thinks can be russian response. We see from this almost two and a half years that when russia is genuinely threatened by some action, like ukrainian insurgent action, drones over the kremlin last year, they do not respond at all because theyjust are at a loss. They dont know how to respond. They are very good responding orally, through the telegram channel, for instance. But not action. Putin is really afraid of action. But it seems the west is equally afraid, and that is why we still find ourselves in this very fragile balance situation. In ukraine two people have been killed and six injured in the Northern Region of sumy. The attack comes as weve been hearing of the Kremlin Warning that the use of western suppled long range missiles by ukraine against targets inside russian territory would escalate the conflict to a new level. Here is our ukraine correspondent, james waterhouse, whos in kyiv. He said discussions about the war overseas are viewed with impatience in ukraine in these parts, it is just seen as needless delay as the country continues to try and mobilise enough men to fight a costly war. So i think there is a degree of impatience here, and clearly ukraine, at this moment in time, is trying to improve its position in any way it can on the battlefield, despite significant counteroffensives inside russia itself and despite, you know, a possible lifting of restrictions that we might realise later today on the use of western missiles, that is no Silver Bullet for ukraine. It is still very much russia which is in the stronger position. So youre seeing these really delicate calculations by the west in terms of how it can step up air support. But also russia is considering its own responses, but also be in No Doubt it is trying to improve its own position, not least with an upcoming us president ial election, where support for ukraine would be far from assured if, say, Donald Trump was elected. Researchers say theyve solved the mystery of the origins of the seismic signal that shook the earth for nine days last september. They have pinned it down to a massive landslide which caused a tsunami in a remote fjord in greenland. The risk of these arctic landslides is increasing because of Climate Change, according to scientists as Victoria Gill reports. A land continuously carved and moulded by vast glaciers. But in one fjord in the east of greenland, a seismic event has transformed the landscape here forever. Were seeing here a simulation of how this seismic signal travelled around the world. When we run this, well start to see this wave. This animation shows the signal that baffled scientists for nine days in september of last year. The dots are seismic monitors around the world, picking up vibrations from something happening in greenland. At the same time that scientists were puzzling over that, a Team Working in greenland received a report of a large tsunami in the east of the country. These photographs show what caused it a huge landslide into this fjord. Look at the Mountain Top in this image. Taken before the event. And look at it afterwards the top of The Mountain is gone, collapsed into the fjord, taking part of the glacier with it. The scientists analysed the Depth And Shape of this narrow, 200km long fjord, and that revealed why the tsunami the landslide caused reverberated around the world for so long. The wave was essentially trapped. The energy of that wave just cant escape, so that wave has tojust keep bouncing back and forth, sloshing back and forth in the fjord. Itjust cant go anywhere. Never before has such a long duration large Scale Movement of water over nine days, in this case been observed. Remote as it is, this is a location that Cruise Ships do visit fortunately, no vessels were in the area when the landslide happened but scientists say the risk of these events is increasing with Climate Change. This glacier was holding up The Mountain. Over decades, it melted and thinned, and eventually millions of cubic metres of rock simply collapsed. Two men have been charged with burglary, after a signed print of a painting by the street artist banksy, was stolen from a gallery in Central London. The artwork, Worth Hundreds Of Thousands of pounds has been returned. Heres nickjohnson. Banging. A gallery in Central London on sunday night. Nearly £2 million worth of Banksy Artwork on display, but it only takes about 30 seconds before someone makes off with one of the artists most iconic prints. This is the banksy exhibition in full swing. The girl with Balloon Taking Pride of place. The original was partially shredded after going under the hammerfor more than £1 million in 2018. Just over two weeks after girl with balloon arrived at the Grove Gallery here in Central London, it had been taken. Someone came and smashed the glass here, came into the gallery and removed the picture from its space here on the wall. All the other banksys in the gallery have since been removed and moved to storage for safekeeping. Butjust days after the theft, girl with balloon had been recovered by the police and is now back safely here in the gallery. Wrapped in an evidence bag, the print, which was once voted the nations favourite artwork, was returned by the Police Yesterday much to the delight of the Gallery Owner who discovered the theft. This is it, so here we have 72 out of 150, which is a limited edition, signed print by the artist himself. Really iconic piece. Very much in demand and, of course, now, with the robbery and the Police Evidence that we have here, weve noticed some scuffs on the framework which is not great, but certainly adds to the story and dimensions of the artwork, thats for sure. And how did you feel when the police said, hey, weve got it back, and then how did you feel when it returned to the gallery . So, that was remarkable. I mean, i could not believe my eyes. The metropolitan police have charged two men with burglary. 47 year old Larry Fraser from essex and 53 year old James Love from East London have both been bailed to appear at Kingston Crown court next month. Further north, the showers in Northern Scotland should move away. The winds wont be as strong. The jury of 30 people spent eight weeks listening to Expert Evidence and campaigners, and concluded it should only be an option for those who are terminally ill and have the capacity to make their own decisions.
