Fled the scene by car. Donald trump's campaign released a statement in which the former president says: there were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, i wanted you to hear this first: i am safe and well. An image of the moment when security services surrounded the suspect has been released. He was detained in martin county by the sheriff's office on the northbound area of interstate 95 following an alert which told officers to be on the lookout for a vehicle seen leaving the golf course in palm beach county. Us media have named his as ryan routh, a 58yearold from hawaii. And there are more details emerging about the suspect, including reports that he was deeply involved in efforts to get foreign fighters into ukraine to battle against the russian army. But first here's the palm beach county sheriff explaining how the incident unfolded. At 1:30pm, a call come out shots fired called in by the secret service. Because we're in constant contact with them all the time, we were notified of that and we had units here that immediately sealed up the area. Fortunately we were able to locate a witness that came to us and said, hey, i saw the guy running out of the bushes, hejumped into a black nissan and i took a picture of the vehicle and the tag, which was great. So, we had that information. Our realtime crime centre put it out to the licence plate readers, and we were able to get a hit on that vehicle on i95 as it was headed into martin county. We got a hold of martin county sheriff's office, alerted them, and they spotted the vehicle and pulled it over and detained the guy. After that, we took the victim i'm sorry, the witness that witnessed the incident took, flew him up there, and he identified as the person that he saw running out of the bushes that jumped into the car. Now, in the bushes where this guy was is an akl style rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them and a go pro which he was going to take pictures of. So, those are being processed right now. The secret service agent that was on the course did a fantasticjob. What they do is, they have an agent thatjumps one hole ahead of time to where the president was at, and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off. So that's what we know about the investigation. We have somebody in custody right now. It is a potential suspect, we got a little bit more work to do on it, but as we usually do, as soon as we decide we are going to book them into the countyjail, and the charges he's going to be booked into, we'll get those to you and we'll get a picture of him and we'll get you his background. Let's bring you the latest from vice president kamala harris. Who said in the past minutes or so as we gather the facts i will be clear i condemn political violence. We always do our part to ensure this incident does not lead to more violence and i'm thankful that former president trump is safe. I commend the us secret service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As president said, our administration will ensure the secret service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission. The latest pictures we have for you now show the secret service also homeland security, these are agents checking a former home of ryan routh, the suspect, and this is in greensboro in north carolina. So the latest pictures we have. These are secret service and homeland security agents at the former home of ryan routh in north carolina. Reminding you ryan routh in his 50s has been identified as the suspect. Cbs correspondent cristian benavides is outside the trump international golf club in west palm beach. He gave us the latest. It's been quite a day for law enforcementment so how did this all get started? let's just sort of go back there. They say this all started around 1:30pm local time, that's about 8. 5 hours ago. A secret service agent who is running ahead of the former president who is golfing at his golf course here spots a man with a rifle . Officials say the secret service agent was about two holes ahead of the former president. He spots somebody with a rifle. At that point, the secret service agent engages with the gunman. The suspect at that point flees on to the street, he goes through the bushes from the golf course, goes out towards street, jumps into a vehicle. A black nissan. At that point, somebody out a witness, spots what's happening. He see it is suspect running into a vehicle, so hejots down suspect running into a vehicle, so he jots down the licence plate number. This vehicle then speeds away. The witness gives that licence plate number to officials, law enforcement officials, law enforcement officials are then able to track down the suspect who was in that vehicle. He was fleeing north, according to officials. On a highway here. He was crossing into another jurisdiction when he was apprehended. At the point where he is apprehended, the witness is then brought to wherever the suspect is and the witness is then able to identify the suspect. So officials say that this witness who jotted down the licence plate number was absolutely key in being able to capture the suspect. Let's bring you uptodate with some of the details particularly what us media sources have been finding our correspondentjenny kumah is in washington. Out. Our us media partners and other us media _ out. Our us media partners and other us media have _ out. Our us media partners and other us media have been out. Our us media partners and| other us media have been the other us media have been the sources confirmed to them the details of the suspect. We don't have anything official yet from law officials directly, though, and he is 58 and from hawaii. His name is ryan wesley routh. Our teams here, the bbc verify team have been analysing social media profiles that match his name and profile photos that resemble pictures of him, allegedly, taken at the scene. Those social media profiles show that he was proukraine and he was involved in getting volunteer fighters to go out to ukraine. And also the team has discovered news reports and videos which show he himself travelled to ukraine. Now, donald trump, his lukewarm support for ukraine has been a big issue during this campaign and the scenes has also uncovered a social media post which showed support for donald trump in 2016, but not in 2020. And the other detail that we have had from our cbs news partners is that the suspect was known to the police and he had a number of convictions around possession possessing weapons and some other misdemeanours between in the early 2000s. Misdemeanours between in the early 2ooos_ early 2000s. Jenny, we haven't seen president _ early 2000s. Jenny, we haven't seen president biden _ early 2000s. Jenny, we haven't seen president biden in early 2000s. Jenny, we haven't seen president biden in person| seen president biden in person respond to this. He's released a statement and we just had an updated statement from kamala harris as well. The theme in both of those is that violence isn't acceptable at any level anywhere in society, but also there's promise to make sure that donald trump is safe. Do you think we're going to see his secret service detail changing? it had already been beefed up after the first assassination attempt but do you think we might see some change there is? change there is? that's very possible change there is? that's very possible. We _ change there is? that's very possible. We understand change there is? that's very. Possible. We understand that the suspect was around 300 to 500 yards from the president. So there may be some questions around him being that close. He was on the perimeter of the course. But as you say, since that assassination attempt, almost exactly two months ago in butler in pennsylvania, president trump orformer president trump orformer president trump's security detail has been beefed up, if you like. You can see this in practical measures, for example, on stage when he's outside in rallies, there's bulletproof glass that surrounds him and that normally was usually the preserve of sitting presidents. So since that shooting which resulted in one person dying, a couple of people are being seriously injured, donald trump's ear being wounded, lots of questions and investigations improved security detail and president biden tonight in his statement saying that he had spoken to his team to ensure that he would continue, president trump, would continue to get enhanced security detail and all that he needed on that front. ,. ~ and all that he needed on that front. ,. ~ ,, and all that he needed on that front. ,. ~' ,, and all that he needed on that front.. ~. Front. Jenny, thank you so much for that update. _ soon after the attempt we saw law enforcement give a comprehensive press briefing. We saw the local sheriff. The fbi has been called in, the secret service were there as well. I have been speaking to jonathan gillam, is a former us navy seal and fbi agent. He explained why this was now an fbi operation. Well, when there's an assassination attempt and it's officially determined that it was an assassination attempt against a sitting president, a former president, or a nominee for president of one of the parties, the fbi will take over that. They take over that investigation. But what you have eel too realise is, when we use those words like they take over the investigation, the reality is that the fbi works closely with all law enforcement in most of these types of cases. It actually becomes basically a joint task force so they can reach out to not only other fbi officers, but also other law enforcement entities where this individual may have been known. They also work with intelligence agencies to see if any of the information comes back about this individual where he may have been part of a statesponsored assassination attempt or any type of terrorist group. What do you make of the evidence that the fbi has got so far? because i've heard it described here in the us as being a gold mine, given we've got the gopro, we've got the gun, we have the car all sorts of crucial pieces of evidence that the fbi will have already? it's very telling. And it's telling on many different levels. One the fact let's look at both the july assassination attempt and this assassination attempt. This is twice that a shooter has been able to get within 500 yards which, for that particular weapon, is an sks an ak47, russianstyle akl the max effective range is a50 yards, especially with a scope. So trump was estimated to be within 400500 yards of this individual. So, twice now, somebody has been able to get within that distance. That's something that the fbi should take into account, because now it's gone beyond just a simple dropping of the ball of tactics where these threat assessments are not being done properly. The individual himself left what appears to be notjust a backpack, but possibly two ballistic plates that are tied and hung up against that fence, and he had the rifle in between those, which meant that he was ready for a potential shootout. He wanted to record it. And then he went to the car and they located the vehicle with him in it, the gopro, if he had any other issues or things that were recorded on there, and his social media. This individual unlikejuly has not had his social media scrubbed. So the fbi will be able to look at that and determine who this guy is as far as social media tells, and then hopefully they get his phones and things like that and will be able to scrub those as well to see if he has any other contacts that could be involved. Do stay with us. We'll have more on the story. Further reaction, many republicans say they're very shocked by what has happened. Notjust has happened. Not just republicans, has happened. Notjust republicans, people across the us. Noone wants to feel here this is the new normal. So we got more analysis coming up for you on that and also don't forget, the emmys have been taking place in la. We'll be looking at the winners. Do stay with us on bbc news. We didn't need reminding of this. It's still such a present feeling here in the us, it's the second assassination attempt on donald trump. Really rocking many republicans and it's interesting to see how they feel this reflects on the state of the nation today. Julie harris is president of the national federation of republican women. We stand for democracy. We need to get back to debating policy and stop dehumanising one another. The left has called president trump hitler. They have dehumanised him, they have said he's a threat to democracy. What do you do if you feel like someone is really threatening your freedom? we don't know if these are lone crazy people or if it is a statesponsored terror of some sort, if it's a foreign enemy, a conspiracy. We need the facts. We don't even have details from the last assassination attempt, and now we have a second attempt. We need to know what is going on here. We need the parameters around president trump to be expanded. We need to protect democracy by protecting the presidential candidates. Julie, would you like to see more protection now around the former president? there's some weeks to go still until the election, and you've also just reflected on how divided this country is and how heated some of the rhetoric is. Do you think that he needs further, greater protection? absolutely. And, as i said, it's a part of protecting freedom. The right for these candidates to run for president, to have these differences, to have these debates, and not to have assassination attempts against them. It is hard at protecting freedom, at protecting president trump. Barry donadio is a former secret service agent who worked in the white house protecting president bush and president obama first and foremost, god bless the united states secret service they saved the president's life today and they did in pennsylvania as well. They did exactly what they were supposed to do they detected a threat, they dealt with the threat and saved the president's life and they probably evacuated him, kept him safe, and not only that, they caught the bad guy. So, the rest is going to be up to congress to figure out what happened, the fbi to investigate, and it's going to be a lot to learn coming up in the next couple of weeks. I want to get your insights into that one secret service agent. He's ahead of donald trump and he's scanning the bush, scanning the golf course and seeing that akl poking up out of a bush. How remarkable is that moment that he managed to spot that? i mean, how difficult is that to be that alert and that conscious of what's in your siteline and what's in your siteline and what's going on? it's a life changing event for the agent as well as the form
