As a default setting. Social media companies have been under growing pressure to protect children from harmful online content. Heres our Technology Editor zoe kleinman. Instagram already claims to have more than 50 tools aimed at keeping teens safe on its platform. But so far, the problem of children being exposed to harmful content has not been resolved. Well, i dont know if its social media, but i think as parents we should have the right to see it. An Ofcom Study earlier this year found that every single child it spoke to had seen violent material online. Instagram was one of the platforms they mentioned the most. The new measures aim put more control into the hands of parents. Accou nts accounts belonging to anyone under the age of 18 are made private by default. Now, if someone under 16 wants to make an account public, they have to add a parent to approve it, and that perak will be able to see who they message which topics they follow. Notifications will be muted overnight, and young people will get an alert if they spend an hour on the app. The biggest changes that Under 16s will need parental permission to alter any of the settings. Some parents have campaigned for years for better protection for their children. Ian russells Daughter Molly took her own life in 2017 after viewing Self Harm Content on instagram. Meta are very good at making these big announcements. What they also have to be good at is making these things transparent and measuring how well their measures are working. Sometime before christmas when these measures are in place and children are using them, we should know from meta how theyre working, whether there are still problems in what they are doing to plug the gaps. These new tools might give parents extra oversight, but they still Cant Control Instagram algorithms or what content appears in the app in the first place. And thats all assuming parents want this extra responsibility. Speaking just last week, Meta Exec Sir Nick Clegg said, in reality, the Tech Giant has found that parents are reluctant to sign up and use these features. Zoe kleinman, Bbc News. Lets go now to our correspondent, angus crawford, who has been following the story. Angus, how do you see this . Is this a big step forward for online safety . 1 a big step forward for online safe . ~ ,... Safety . I think this announcement could be hugely safety . I think this announcement could be hugely significant, safety . I think this announcement could be hugely significant, but i safety . I think this announcement could be hugely significant, but it| could be hugely significant, but it raises for me three immediate and important issues. Number one, existing users on the platform who are under 18 who may well have lied about their age to get there. We know from some research, as many as 65 of nine to 12 year olds already have an account on instagram, so what is the platform going to do to verify those users who may have said they were an adult to get on. Second, what about new users and Age Verification . What is instagram going to do today that it wasnt doing yesterday to make sure that those children are the age they say they are . There is another issue there. How do you tackle the problem of teenagers pestering their parents to set up an account for them . Finally, The Big Question is, is this really is because it sounds . Other Tectonic Plates starting to move . In recent years we have had the online Safety Act here, The European Digital Services Act in the eu, and we have had Court Cases in the us about the safety of the platforms. So i suppose the question is, our Regulation And Litigation finally starting to bite . Finally starting to bite . Angus, Thank Ou finally starting to bite . Angus, thank you very finally starting to bite . Angus, thank you very much finally starting to bite . Angus, thank you very much indeed. L in france, a 71 year old man has admitted drugging his wife so that he and 50 other men could rape her as she slept. Dominique pelicot told a court in avignon he was admitting all the charges against him. I am a rapist, he said, and so are all the other defendants in this court room. He begged for the forgiveness of his wife, gisele. Our Paris Correspondent Andrew Harding has been following the case and has sent us this report. Prison vans arriving at the courthouse in avignon. Inside, and handcuffed, some of the 51 men on trial here. All accused of raping one drugged and unconscious woman. And this morning, as usual, that woman strode calmly into court, waiving her right to anonymity, looking at past other accused who are not in detention. No cameras are allowed inside the courtroom, but today, pelicot s former husband dominique gave evidence. Translation I Dominique gave evidence. Translation dominique gave evidence. Translation .. This case has prompted big demonstrations across france. People saluting gisele pelicot. SHe Is so courageous, said this woman. She speaks for so many women and children. There is a strong sense here that this extraordinary case highlights larger concerns about how rape investigations are handling victims treated. Andrew harding, Bbc News, france. And we can talk to andrew live now. As you said in your report, this is a case that has caused Shock Waves across france and indeed around the world, in fact, where people have been paying close attention to the case. But extraordinary developments in the Courtroom Today as well. Indeed, a morning of extraordinary testimony from Dominique Pelicot, who said he was not born evil. He apologised for what he had done, but he also cited being raped when he was nine that contributed to what later became an addiction. He insisted he had not abused his daughter or any other of his children or grandchildren. His wife, gisele, was in court to hear this, she reacted by saying in court that it was difficult to listen to the man that she had trusted completely for 50 years. Significantly as well of course, there were 50 Co Accused also sitting in that courtroom this morning. Only 15 of them have actually admitted to rape. The rest have suggested that there were some implied consent, or that the Husbands Consent was enough. And today we heard Dominique Pelicot very clearly rejecting that as an argument, saying all those men being filmed knew what they were doing. They were all rapists like he was, he said. ... he said. He was addressing an audience a day after the former newsreader received a suspended Jail Term for making indecent images of children. Our Culture Reporter Noor nanji is there. Noor, what else did Tim Davie say . Tim davie was speaking at an Industry Event here in central london, and as you say, it is a day after Huw Edwards was sentenced on those abuse images. Tim davie was first of all asked whether he thought that Huw Edwards would ever work at the bbc again, and he said, for obvious reasons he cant see that happening. He said given the appalling crimes he hasjust been convicted of. He was also asked about scrubbing Huw Edwards from the archives, and he said on that matter we never completely ban people from the archives, but it cant see a scenario in which edwards is used in day to day programming. More broadly, he was also saying that within the bbc there is a sense of Shock And Anger and upset about what has happened, but he says it is not really about the corporation. What it is about the victims and their families. Finally he was asked about the money. Remember the bbc asked Huw Edwards to return that 200,000 that he earned since his arrest last november, and on that front, he says, we want the money back, we have asked for the money back, but thatis have asked for the money back, but that is all He Is able to say at this point. A 16 year old boy says hes been left shaken after the treatment he received at great ormond Street Hospital is now part of an urgent review. George is one of more than 700 children who were patients of yaserjabbar, a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who stepped down from his role last year, but whose work is now being examined by the Royal College Of Surgeons, following concerns raised by Staff And Patient families. Great ormond street says its contacted all those affected. Alison freeman reports. It was meant to be an operation that helped to improve georges life, but the complicated procedure he thought would lengthen his left arm and required nine months in a Metal Frame in fact did the opposite. My left hand, its shorter and definitely more curved than it was before as well. The fingers arent as flexible, and im in pain when i put them under any sort of stress. Great ormond Street Hospital is now reviewing the care of more than 700 children who received treatment from an Orthopaedic Surgeon. That surgeon is yaserjabbar. He worked at the London Hospital for five years between 2017 and 2022. Two years ago, after concerns were raised by staff and families of patients, great ormond street asked the Royal College Of Surgeons to conduct a wider review into its orthopaedic practices. Subsequently, the hospital wrote to all 721 of mrjabbar s patients and their families. It now said 22 children in 39 cases it had looked at so far had come to some degree of harm, with 13 classified as serious. For georges family, who only found out earlier this year, its come a huge shock. George had been under their care since he was two, and we had had the best care. And you do go in with blind trust, because it is great ormond street. We are devastated, and we are mortified that our trust has been broken by the place that we trusted our son to. In a statement, great ormond street apologised, and said a group of independent experts are now reviewing all the patients of one surgeon, and that it was committed to being open and transparent. Mrjabbar is now thought to be practising in dubai, and has not responded to the bbc for comment. I was quite shocked to see the number of individuals who were affected by this potentially, and as the investigation is still ongoing, so, yes, we would encourage any families who have any concerns to seek legal advice. George and his family are now considering whats best for his future. Its very difficult for george, because this surgery performed isnt just a one off surgery, its nine months of having a frame on yourarm, which affects your education, it affects future earnings, it affects your social life. The decision is now Up To george whether he chooses to go to future surgery. I just want to live a happy life above all else. Alison freeman, Bbc News. The time is 1. 15.
